Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
Just in time for the release of Shazam!, Freddy Yaniz joins us to talk about the state of the DC Extended Universe. After a rocky start marked by such divisive releases as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, DC's finest superheroes look to be finally getting their due. We'll dig into how James Wan's Aquaman fits into all this before launching into a full-on review of director David F. Sandberg's Shazam! Shazam! synopsis, courtesy of Warner Bros.: We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong). In the second episode of Reel Time, we have a huge news section with lots of announcements and trailers that have happened lately. We look at the new Ghostbusters announcement, Mission Impossible sequels, Marvel trailer madness, Dan Gilroy's latest film heading to Netflix, and more. Locally we talk about the Star Wars Symphony screenings and the death of the local video stores... and also talk about if movies are getting better or worse due to how critics are grading them online. For our main reviews we look at James Wan's Aquaman and M. Night Shyamalan's Glass - both spoiler free. Our look back at other films covers briefly Ready Player One, which Ryan hadn't seen last year, alongside deciding how well The Breakfast Club has aged and if Bill and Ted are still excellent or bogus. Aside from touching on some other highlights, we both also discuss the demise of the parody film and the rise of the meta-comedy. Finally we play a game of 'Names from a Hat' (or rather a bag because its all we had near us) and try to name as many movies a particular actor has done in 30 seconds! Lots already in this second episode, please comment, like, and subscribe! DC's search for a cinematic tone continues to lurch between monochrome gravity and Technicolor frivolity, James Wan's Aquaman firmly occupying the latter end of the spectrum. Although Mike has long been amused at how feeble is the concept of a superhero whose power is fish telepathy, the film has a good sense of humour about itself (even if some of the specific jokes are a little clunky) and hugely enjoyable freedom in its design, the giant seahorses a particular charm. We discuss what's to like and dislike about the film's visual design and action, its message that violence is the least good solution to any problem, the welcome wisdom and calmness brought by Willem Dafoe and Dolph Lundgren (yes, really), and its adaptation of Arthurian legend and how it fits into a recent spate of films and television programmes fascinated with monarchy, bloodlines, divine rights and so on. Jose is overall more reserved than Mike but still announces that he enjoyed himself, and the golden rule holds true: the key to happiness is low expectations. Recorded on 29th December 2018.
