Join James (from the Watchtower Database YouTube channel) as he shows his good buddy Brian the entire DC Animated Universe from start to finish for the very first time, in the controversial airdate order--so he may view these shows the way human beings experienced them in the far-gone days of the 1900s (and 20-hundreds). It may be the kickoff to summer, but the Good Brothers are feeling a chill in the air as Mr. Freeze returns to Gotham post-SubZero to wreak havoc on anyone that has joy in Gotham City in the New Batman Adventures episode "Cold Comfort." The hosts discuss the decision to make Mr. Freeze into a "head in a jar," why Nora Fries may be the shallowest of all of the DCAU love interests, speculation on why the Mr. Freeze theme from Batman The Animated Series is absent from the episode and a fun theory as to why Mr. Freeze's new "Ice Maidens" are walking around wearing only parkas. After a bit of a layoff, the Good Brothers are back to where it all started (or at least the continuation of it) with episode 2 of The New Batman Adventures/Batman The Animated Series episode "Sins of the Father" which introduces a new Robin into the fold with Tim Drake and offers the secrets of his past and how he came to be! Cal and Liam return with the beginning of the end of their The Zeta Project coverage with the 5th to last double feature , this week with the episodes "Ro's Gift," which sees the return of a group of villains that debuted in Batman Beyond and "Lost and Found" which features the previously unseen origin stories of our lead protagonists. The hosts discuss a disappointing return of villains, how the episode was originally a Batman Beyond crossover and how the series continued to be hamstrung by a lack of action. With the second episode they discuss a surprisingly fun and well-written episode by a DCAU writing veteran, some fun visual easter eggs and some unique music and recognizable voice actors from the DCAU all combining to result in one of the highest-rated Zeta episodes to date. When you've reached the end, you can't help but want to look back and that's just what Liam & Cal do this week as they take a second gander on the pod at the Batman Beyond season one episode "Golem." The hosts look back at their original scores and decide with the benefit of hindsight and nearly 8 years of reviews if they were too harsh or too lenient on the episode featuring the alliterative Willie Watt and his giant robot friend. The hosts discuss the dynamics lifted from classic 80s teen classics and horror films, the unique musical pieces from Shirley Walker, why this episode changed the direction for the Beyond writers going forward and a little sneaky easter egg that may just explain the Golem's design. It's back to the future for the next several weeks as the Good brothers make their return to the DCAU with the penultimate episode of Batman Beyond which features a crossover from The Zeta Project in the episode "Countdown." When Zeta shows up to Gotham, hijinks ensue as the Mad Stan straps a bomb to an oblivious Zeta. The hosts discuss how this plot mirrors an earlier episode of Batman Beyond, expectations for the episode being set higher due to those given the writing credit and it being the original intended series finale and just what tone this episode could have taken to be a more enjoyable episode. The hosts also discuss animation that while fine suffers from a lack of action, music by the late, great Shirley Walker and a voice cast of both series' regulars. “Do you think this Eric Frankenstein is into crypto?” “This Frankenstein probably invented crypto” “Frank-coin?” National security journalist Nicholas Slayton joins me to talk about James Gunn's DC animated series for HBO, Creature Commandoes. We've got gothic horror, geopolitics and an impressive soundtrack. This episode opens with a spoiler-free conversation on whether the show is worth your time before diving in for a conversation about those who the law does not protect, disability metaphors and more. Our hosts return to the podcave and are once again sent around the world on another Ra's adventure in the episode, AVATAR! (no not the blue or air-bending kind) Alex and Will discuss the Hammer horror elements to this episode and the clear odes to the original The Mummy movie. Highlighting the opening and ending sequences as classic horror scenes, as well as Peter Cushing now being an official character in the DCAU. Our hosts also wonder how Batman got home after being stranded in the desert with only a water flask. As well as discussing what Ra's got upto in WW2, the zombie Queen's belly dancing routine, and accidentally creating two new characters in BTAS -- Snot & Booger. Iris takes a page out of Alex's playbook and proves that sequel episodes here on the Couch aren't just reserved for award-winning animes: following our previous episode on 2001's Justice League, today the gang presents to you 2004's Justice League Unlimited, the eighth and final series of the DC Animated Universe and cherished childhood Saturday morning cartoon for everyone here not named Michael. We can confidently say that this is the best superhero cartoon out there, with immense narrative range, superb voice acting, fun fight scenes, and great messages for children and adults alike. Plus, there's more heroes, more villains, more interpersonal banter, and even some Batman Beyond baby! It's so impressive for a show to have aged so gracefully and proved that not only did it improve upon every series that preceded it, but it became so much more than just a sendoff for the DCAU. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.
A new month means the Good Brothers are moving on to another DCAU series, spending the next few weeks in Dakota and Static Shock. This week's episode is the sequel to one of the best Static episodes featuring the African superhero Anansi the Spider, in "Out of Africa." The hosts discuss the difficulties in following up an episode as great as "Static in Africa" with a sequel, the expanded rogues from African folklore and music that really drives home the native music for our guest star. Plus, the hosts talk about the very Sharon-centric story, where Osebo might have gotten his wealth and the question of the week inquires about the fictional place of Marvel heroes within the DCAU. The Good Brothers are continuing to revisit the crossover that kicked off the DCAU with a look at the second part of The Batman/Superman Movie aka "World's Finest, Part 2." Liam and Cal are back to their regular format this week taking a closer look at one of the defining and most memorable events in DCAU history with a re-review of Part I of "World's Finest." The Good Brothers look back at the kickoff to the DC Animated Universe and dive deeper than they did nearly 7 years and 323 episodes prior and discuss the thematic setup that mirrors a movie plot, and for good reason. They also talk about the animation by TMS and how it influenced the look of the episode, how pop culture references can be used without being distracting and some theories and easter eggs for later DCAU plot threads. The hosts also talk about the fantastic use of multiple legendary musical pieces as well as the who's who of the DCAU voice actors lining up to voice our all-star cast of characters. Cal & Liam are kicking off a new month with a return to a format they first introduced last year where they recap a pair of DCAU characters and pit them against one another in a simulated contest to see who they believe would come out on top in their second edition of Meta-Brawl. This edition features the "Main Man" Lobo in a battle against John Henry Irons aka Steel. The hosts talk about the comic book origins of both characters before covering their DCAU story arcs, theme music, the voice actors that brought both to life as well as DCAU tie-in comic appearances and merchandise. When all is said in done the hosts go through their final scorecards and declare one fighter their winner of the second Meta-Brawl. Who will come out victorious? Cal & Liam are once again back with another season three Justice League Unlimited review, this week tackling the Flash-centered episode "Flash and Substance." The hosts talk a bit about the 85th Anniversary of the Flash character in 2025, how this episode acts as a love letter to the Scarlet Speedster and his DCAU persona, why this episode has a meta commentary on gritty and light-hearted superhero stories and a ton of fun Flash lore and DCAU easter eggs. Liam and Cal are back at it again with their first review of 2025 and a return to Justice League Unlimited for the month of January. This week they continue on in Season Three of JLU with the episode "To Another Shore." On this episode, the hosts discuss the unique "embargo" that helped shape this episode into one that would alter the course of the remainder of the series, why character embargos are so confusing and what influenced the various limitations on JLU over the three seasons. The hosts also discuss an episode with a plot right out of Super Friends, the unique illustrations and whose art directly influenced the work by Bruce Timm, a meta musical moment for the first time in the DCAU and a rather distracting casting choice for one of the episode's minor characters. All of this and the usual fun, plus a look at next week's episode all await you on this week's edition of the DCAU Review!
