We’re back, betches—and this time, live from Auckland for Nova’s Red Room Global Tour! In today’s ep, we chat to the stunning and effortlessly chill Gracie Abrams ahead of her Spark Arena gig (barefoot, of course). Joel admits he may have “over-strummed” during the chat, Tim tries to convince us she complimented his outfit, and Ricki’s in full Beyoncé meltdown mode after Cowboy Carter kicked off in LA. Plus, the team recount Joel’s chaotic airport behaviour (lost engagement ring, new AirPods, possible nap-induced blackout), we run through which celebrity kids we low-key find annoying (controversial!), and find out why Gracie’s post-show wind-down involves LEGO and zero socialising.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The comedian Jimmy Carr is coming back to New Zealand for a nationwide tour the culminates at Auckland's Spark Arena. These are big halls, and he can fill them because he's that good. It's called 'Jimmy Carr Laughs Funny' and he does. It's so true, it's funny. And that's Jimmy's thing. It's easy to lump comedians like Jimmy, and Ricky Gervais and America's Bill Maher into a conservative label simply because so much of what they say is politically incorrect. But what makes them funny is that it's just true. They point out the hilarity of our tribal positions - both left and right. I'm reading Bill Maher's book 'What This Comedian Said Will Shock You'. It's a collection of his best monologues over the year. I used to think he was quite right wing when I watched his show, but that was because he was merciless against the Biden administration. Now that Trump is in power he's equally merciless. I like that. I like his pithy observation that conservatives govern without shame and liberals shame without governing. That's true in America and it's true here. And he says that's why the world is full of people who want to break shit up. I like all these comedians because they bring logic to the fight. Unlike politicians who bring whatever might score them votes, and the media who will say anything that will get them clicks, which will pay the bills.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kerre McIvor Mornings Podcast
Kerre Woodham: What is our obsession with shiny new stadia?

Kerre McIvor Mornings Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2025 7:41 Transcription Available

What is this mania for the building of stadia when this country has so many already and very, very few of them are economic assets? The decision over whether to upgrade Eden Park in Auckland or to build a brand spanking new stadium on the waterfront is such an old debate. And before I go on, I will say I've been a guest of Eden Park, but it does take more to buy my opinion than a very nice lamb chop and a glass of non-alcoholic rosé, I promise you. The contest for Auckland's main stadium yesterday ended with neither Eden Park nor Te Tōangaroa proving feasible without public funding. Eden Park's upgrade is technically feasible but requires $110 million from the Government. Te Tōangaroa's proposal lacks technical and commercial feasibility. So right there I'd say, “well, I'm gonna stop you there” if I was a councillor. If it lacks technical and commercial feasibility, wouldn't we go, “well, thanks very much, bit of a waste of our time, ka kite anō” to the people behind it? Anyway, they plan to progress land acquisition over 12 months. Now, most of you will be familiar with Eden Park, even if you're from around the country. Te Tōangaroa is more ambitious, includes a 50,000 seat stadium —which is the capacity of Eden Park— that can be scaled down to 20,000 capacity for smaller events. It's the centrepiece for the redevelopment of Quay Park with up to four hotels, hospitality, scope for 2000 apartments, plus commercial offices. Different parties have been trying to build a waterfront stadium for years now. You'll remember Trevor Mallard had a plan to build a stadium in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and that came to naught. Another proposal in 2018 was floated and came crashing down to earth. Developers would build a shiny new waterfront stadium, in exchange, they'd get the land at Eden Park, plus the ability to build apartments on the waterfront land. There's always something in it for the people behind the developments. Of course, there is, otherwise, why would they do what they do? And it ends up being chumps like you and me who pay for it. We have stadia. We have stadia up the Yin Yang, all over the country, all over Auckland that are underutilized and uneconomic. As the chief executive of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Martin Snedden told Mike Hosking this morning we need to get over ourselves and consolidate into just one stadium. “It's time people really got collaborative, and I know, you know, you may not agree with me here, but the Warriors, Auckland FC, they should be incorporated into the program at Eden Park, so that, you know, that venue is... This is what's happened, you know, places around the world is the multi-use of one venue. "Look at what happened at Eden Park over the weekend, where on Friday they had White Ferns and Black Caps internationals played there, Saturday it was the Crusaders and the Blues, and Monday it was the All Whites qualifying for the World Cup. That's the right use of the stadia, and that's what we need to move towards. We don't need to keep propping up other stadia that are just not fit for purpose, let's just concentrate it all on what we've got.” Absolutely. But why is it too, that every city around the country, every large town, big city, wants its own stadium when they don't make economic sense? There's a great piece in the conversation by Robert Hamlin and he points out, there have been just 30 major events at Forsyth Bar in Dunedin since 2014. He wrote the piece last year, so that's three a year. Te Kaha in Christchurch is being funded mostly by ratepayers —the Crown's put in a bit— and the stadium was solely responsible for a 2% increase in rates last year. We come to Hamilton, and these figures are from 2015 so there might have been a remarkable turnaround – I doubt it, but there might have been. Since Claudelands Event Center opened in 2011, it has run at around a $10 million deficit per year. And who pays for that? Ratepayers. Palmerston North: in the 2021 10 year plan, it showed a budgeted income of $19 million, but expenses of $73 million. Come on. It does have facilities for some indoor sports, but much of the money that's going to be spent is on the main stadium in sport of stock car activities, including $4 million budgeted for new pits and more millions for a new grandstand on the south end. Non-stock car income is negligible because the stadium struggles to attract higher level rugby matches or large concerts because of the car track. Invariably, if you do end up building a bloody stadium, It's not good for something else. So, they're not multi-purpose, they can't be used for other events. You build this stonking great white elephant, and we pay for it, us, and then we're not allowed in it unless we pay a fortune for a ticket to go to something that's on inside the stadium that we built. As a ratepayer, you should get a free ticket to anything that's in there for the rest of your life. I just don't get why we're so obsessed with wanting new shiny stadia. In Auckland, we've got Eden Park, Go Media Stadium (formerly Mount Smart), Western Springs, Spark Arena, North Harbour Stadium. No, we don't need another one. Bowl the others, and everybody can play nicely together in one big stadium. At the moment, it looks like Eden Park's the most likely – there you go, I've paid for my lamb chop. But imagine your family budget at the moment: Oh, wouldn't it be nice if we built a beautiful new swimming pool at the back because the kids are getting a bit older now? Be lovely, with a nice little pool house next to it. Yes, it would be lovely. Can we afford it? No. And that's what the Waterfront Stadium is. Honestly, as Robert Hamlin said, the reason why is that people just get so excited, the decision makers get so excited, with all these reports of the extra economic benefit that's going to come to the city, and it's gonna prosper and it's just gonna be the making of the city. No, it's not. No. Ratepayers end up paying and paying and paying for generations for a white elephant that nobody's allowed to ride unless you pay a bloody fortune to get on its back. Morgan Wallen's journey to music stardom has been unlike so many others. The country music star joined Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking this morning and told him that he “never dreamed” his music career would take off the way it did. What started as a brief stint on reality television grew into a successful music career with multiple chart-topping singles and the only country album in the 64-year history of the Billboard 200 to spend its first ten weeks at the No.1 spot. Wallen's journey in the music industry began in 2014, when he competed on the 6th season of The Voice- before getting booted after the playoffs. Morgan Wallen told Hosking he didn't see this as a loss in the end. “I wanted to sing country, they wanted me to sing pop, I finally got to sing country, they kicked me off for singing country, which probably turned out to be the best thing that could happen to me. I didn't know exactly who I was as an artist at that point anyway.” One year later, a move to Nashville set him up with the connections he needed to break into the country music scene and figure out the kind of sound he wanted to produce. “I moved here in 2015, we just started grinding and I ended up getting a record deal within a few months of moving here, a record promotion deal, and then I just started writing, I wrote songs for a year before I did anything else,” he told Newstalk ZB. Fame has been a mixed experience for Morgan Wallen, as he knows he has the power to do a lot of good for the world and positively affect the lives of his fans. He enjoyed making fan's lives by sending a video but admits to missing going to the grocery store like a normal person. Cut to the present, where Morgan Wallen has released his third studio album One Thing At A Time. The album offers 33 tracks, but Morgan told Mike Hosking he was most proud of ‘98 Braves. Morgan Wallen has a personal connection to the baseball hook of the song, having played it in his youth. “Growing up, I was always the best kid on the team. I never really had to try, which was a blessing and a curse cause I got to the point where I was maybe 15 or 16, and a lot of my buddies who I thought I was better than had been grinding and working their tails off constantly.” Morgan Wallen managed to achieve great success in music following his baseball ambitions collapsing after an injury. He told Mike that “God works in crazy ways, but I'm trying to make the most of it”. One Thing At A Time was influenced by Wallen's previous album Dangerous: The Double Album. Fans told Morgan Wallen that they would listen to the 32-track album as they played golf or drove or worked out. Morgan Wallen was encouraged by this feedback and the successful run Dangerous had on the charts to create another long album. “I got into the zone in the studio and just kept making songs. We actually cut 42 songs originally.” One Thing At A Time covers plenty of familiar ground for Wallen; trucks, whiskey, beer, sports and women. “It's honest to who we are, what we do and how we were raised” he explained to the Newstalk ZB breakfast host. “We try to find unique perspectives on everyday things for people like us. That can be a challenge sometimes, Wallen explained, because he felt the need to write what he knew while offering a fresh perspective into familiar themes. How does he expect those themes to translate to Kiwi audiences? This tour will be his first time visiting New Zealand and bringing that unique country sound to New Zealand is “surreal”, Morgan Wallen told Mike Hosking. “It makes me happy to know I'm bringing a certain culture, a certain sound, a certain way of life to a different group of people who may have never heard it. There's really not much of a better compliment that I can get.” “I still consider myself a pretty simple dude, it doesn't take a whole lot to make me happy- give me a few hundred acres and a couple buddies and I'm good. Not much has changed and I think that's the way it's always gonna be, and I hope my music always portrays that.” One Thing At A Time is available to buy or stream now and Morgan Wallen's One Night At A Time tour will be coming to Auckland's Spark Arena on March 15th, 2023, tickets available here.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The hit Broadway production Hamilton, a rap/R&B/jazz infused musical about America's founding fathers is premiering in New Zealand next May. The show will run for two weeks at Auckland's Spark Arena, following a successful run in Australia. Fans of the musical are very excited for this debut, including Victoria University theatre lecturer James Wenley, who saw it live before and look forward to seeing it again. However, he says that running the show in Spark Arena isn't the best choice, as he believes Hamilton doesn't suit the venue. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last night, 22 year old Wellington musician Taylor Johnston was invited onstage to play the drums with The Killers at Auckland's Spark Arena. Lead singer Brandon Flowers had noticed Johnston's sign begging to be allowed to play on "For Reasons Unknown". Johnston has outlined why he chose that song, as he didn't want to come in during a hugely popular song like "Mr Brightside" or "When We Were Young". "It's well-known enough, people know it, they love it. But it's just such a perfect drumming song. It's got sick drums and it's got enough room for people to make their own interpretation, it's just perfect to play drums to." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
