"Summer Surprise" rolls along, and this time around our online randomizer has chosen a film from perhaps our most dreaded cinematic genre - a "supernatural romance" YA adaptation! That's right, 2013's Beautiful Creatures was another studio attempt to cash-in on and replicate the success of Twilight, and upon its release it was roundly dismissed as such by both critics and audiences. But could this Southern Gothic tale of love and witchcraft possibly work its magic on us? If nothing else, will we fall under the spell of one of the most impressive ensemble casts we've encountered so far, with Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, Margo Martindale, Zoey Deutch, and Lois Lane herself, Rachel Brosnahan? Or will we once again be left "cursing" the fates that caused us to watch yet another YA adaptation? Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd

Send us a Text Message. On this 82nd episode of Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to discuss the finer points of being a misunderstood celebrity sequestered in first-rate hostelries as we discuss three of director Sofia Coppola's notable tales of privileged isolation: 2003's Lost in Translation starring Bill Murray, Scarlett Johannsson, Anna Faris, Fumihiro Hayashi and Giovanni Ribisi along with 2010's Somewhere starring Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning, Chris Pontius, Ellie Kemper, Michelle Monaghan, and in an uncredited cameo, Alden Ehrenreich topped off with 2023's Priscilla starring Callie Spaeny, Jacob Elordi, Tim Post, Ari Cohe and Mrs. Patrick Wilson herself, Dagmara Dominczyk. I'm joined this week by my favorite panelists who, like Priscilla Presley, can relate to feelings of being confined in a stultifying dungeon of endless pontification with an insecure and egotistical blowhard, my kid-sister and lit major Roseanne Caputi as well as The King of Reno, actor, photographer and guitarist, Colonel Gordon Alex Robertson! Okay, before we don the blue suede shoes and lock ourselves in our rooms, the synopses: In Lost in Translation over-the-hill action movie star Bob Harris, in Tokyo to do a photoshoot for a brand of Japanese whiskey, befriends fellow hotel resident Charlotte, a young American woman whose new husband, a photographer, is in town to do a fashion shoot and is never around. Somewhere tells the story of Johnny Marco, a hard-partying Hollywood action star on the rise, spinning his wheels and recuperating from an injury at Hollywood's famous Chateau Marmont is unexpectantly charged by his ex-wife to spend more time with his daughter Cleo. And in a show first: I'm going to have Roseanne fact check the Google Log line for a film: Priscilla- When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock 'n' roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness and a vulnerable best friend. What would an ace English Teacher and lit major do to correct that synopsis? Find out! Welcome to “Not Couple Goals” where co-hosts Allie Nelson and Tyler McCarthy do a deep dive into a different ridiculous romantic thriller from the vantage point of their long-term relationship. Allie, a TV writer/producer and actress, has an affinity for romantic thrillers, the more salacious the better. Tyler, an entertainment reporter and critic, often finds himself drawn in despite his better judgment. Join them as they explore all the ways it's possible to love too hard… like WAY too hard. In this episode, Allie and Tyler tackle the 2023 Netflix Original movie “Fair Play” starring Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich and written and directed by Chloe Domont. Join them as they not-so-delicately dive into the very delicate male ego at the heart of this movie and fawn over perhaps the best final line in any thriller they've done so far. Can this redeem Ehrenreich for “Solo”? Listen and find out. Special thanks to Mallory Johns for the introduction music. Josh is joined by Financial Services Industry Correspondent Fred Kolb to discuss Netflix's "Fair Play." The film has been marketed as an erotic thriller, and Josh and Fred discuss whether that billing was a bit misleading. They also get into how first-time writer/director Chloe Domont did in creating a tense workplace using dense financial terms, the quality of the lead performances from Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich and much more!
The Netflix movie Fair Play stars Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich as a couple that's young, in love, and hot for one another. At least until one gets a promotion over the other at the hedge fund where they both work, and things get tense at home and in the office. Can their relationship withstand the pull of cutthroat ambition and male ego, or is their stock doomed for a free fall?
"Fair Play" had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it received strong reviews for its two lead performances from Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich and Chloe Domont's direction and writing. The film makes the feature directorial debut for Domont, who is no stranger to being behind the camera as she's taken all her experience working in short films and television to this steaming pressure cooker of a film. Domont was kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about where the idea for the film came from, working with the actors, how to chart the course of tension, and more. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in limited release and will be available to stream on Netflix on October 6th. Thank you, and enjoy! From director Elizabeth Banks comes a romp through the woods of Blood Mountain, with a cast of fun actors (Margo Martindale! O'Shea Jackson Jr! Keri Russell! Isiah Whitlock, Jr!, the late, great Ray Liotta!) trying not to be mauled to death by a coke-addled black bear. And we've got The Flop House's Dan McCoy with us to pick up the bloody pieces.
