Jerry Zehr was not a guest I would normally interview. Why did I? To overcome my own reservations and challenge my perspectives and views. What I learned was Jerry's insight and his experience as a interfaith minister allows him unique insights and extraordinary empathy. I put my doubts to one side and followed my curiousity and once again the rewards speak for themselves. You can get in touch with Jerry at the following links and BTW his new book The Peacemaker's path is out as well. Make sure to rate the podcast and share it to a wider audience.

I have a new book coming out on August 24th, 2021 “The Peacemaker's Path: Multifaith Reflections to Deepen Your Spirituality” Now more than ever, people are painfully divided politically, religiously, and culturally. And yet, there is a commonality in our faith traditions that can help us turn away from polarization and create a greater sense of community in which our differences are honored. The Peacemaker's Path brings together wisdom from the world's major religious traditions, including Bahá'í, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Native American spiritualities, Sikhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism, showing that we have much more in common than what divides us. Through daily readings that explore the tenets, teachings, writings, and prayers of these diverse faith traditions, you will gain new insight, understanding, and connection with people from different religious backgrounds. Each day offers a reflection, scripture passages from the world's religions, questions to contemplate, a call to action, and a closing prayer. May we realize the tremendous importance of building bridges of peace in our own lives, communities, and world. Loving our friends is easy; loving the "other" will bring shalom. Before I went into the ministry, I was a professional actor performing in over 50 musicals and dramas. My novel "Blurring the Lines " tells of my experience in the entertainment business in Los Angeles, California. The theme running through the book is "What Are You Willing to Sell Your Soul For?" I have a Degree in Speech and Theater from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, and a Master of Divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, Indiana. Jerry and I talk about his journey from following his dream of being an actor to Hollywood only to realize it was the wrong dream. His true dream was on a more spiritual path.********I grew up with Amish/ Mennonite roots but left this sect because it was too legalistic and judgmental. I disconnected from God altogether as I graduated with a speech and theater degree and moved to Los Angeles, California. I was a driven, anxious perfectionist trying to make my fame and fortune in the entertainment business. I was confronted many times with situations that I asked myself the question," What am I willing to sell my soul for?" My first novel "Blurring the Lines" is based on my experiences in the entertainment business as I struggled with this question. As I gave in to drugs and alcohol to medicate my emptiness inside, I finally realized my soul was dried up. I would be dead in five years if I didn't get out of this environment. I left the entertainment life and began a journey of self-exploration, studying the world religions, and traveling around the world. I have a new understanding of God and the Divine within us. I am a recovering perfectionist/worrier, learning how to grow into the fullness of who God created me to be. It has only taken 66 years, and I am still growing.Website: https://jerryzehr.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jerry.zehrTwitter: https://twitter.com/jerryzehr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jerryzehr/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jerryzehr/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq4oMHKZY3JuoQr88Goyz_Q******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@betertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX0ETs2wpOHbCuhUNr0XFTw?view_as=subscriberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Twitter: https://twitter.com/DaunaD1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomVideo of the interview is available here: https://youtu.be/1y69XLr3OdMHave a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcastSupport the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomSound Design and production by Rich Zei at Third Ear Audio Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thirdearaudioproductions©2022 Better To...Podcast with D. In our society there is a sense of “I'm right and everyone else that thinks differently is wrong.” Our conversation with Rev. Jerry Zehr asks the question: where do we get these thoughts and are our thoughts true? We deconstruct the idea that just because we were taught something doesn't mean it's true. And once we get past the myth that our self-worth is based on productivity, we have the ability to love ourselves. This shift to self-love then supports us to see others with compassion as we realize we have more in common than not. Jerry Zehr, is a retired minister of over 36 years, working with interfaith ministries. Now more than ever, people are painfully divided politically, religiously, and culturally. And yet, there is a commonality in our faith traditions that can help us turn away from polarization and create a greater sense of community in which our differences are honored. The Peacemaker's Path Jerry Zehr pt 2We see division all around us today. We are divided politically, socially, racially, economically. We are divided religiously as well. Even Christians are divided amongst ourselves in various denominations. And even denominations are divided. You have, for example, the Baptists, the Southern Baptists, Reformed Baptists, Independent Baptists – I could go on and on. The point being, with all of this division going on, is there any wonder we are seeing the turmoil in our society? We need to come together around commonality. We need to come together in unity. In order to do that, we must begin to TALK with each other, commune with each other and try to understand each other on a deeper level than just what divides us. My guest today has been on the front lines of doing just that. Jerry Zehr has served as a pastor and leader in interfaith ministries for over 30 years and has helped in creating four interfaith organizations. He is the author of the book, https://amzn.to/3gfLW3g (“The Peacemakers Path: Multi-Faith Reflections to Deepen Your Spirituality”) Why do you believe there is such division and polarization between different religions today? You also wrote a book titled, https://amzn.to/2Ur8giK (“Blurring the Lines”) that shares about your time working in the entertainment industry. How did that book and what you shared in https://amzn.to/2Ur8giK (“Blurring the Lines,”) shape what you are doing today and develop the content of your book, https://amzn.to/3gfLW3g (“The Peacemaker's Path?”) How did you begin the process of building the bridge amongst the other Faith leaders of various Faiths? Have you experienced any criticism from other pastors and ministers, Christian or otherwise, for the work you are doing in trying to bring together mutual understanding through your inter-faith work? Why do you think some people claim to be “spiritual” but not “religious?” Jerry this is all so interesting. I know God wants us to get along with all people. I believe He is blessing the work you are doing to accomplish that. I mentioned in the opening that you appeared on the “Johnny Carson Show.” How did that happen? How can someone obtain a copy of your book, https://amzn.to/3gfLW3g (“The Peacemakers Path: Multi-Faith Reflections to Deepen Your Spirituality?”) Is it available on Amazon? What about your book, https://amzn.to/2Ur8giK (“Blurring the Lines?”) If someone has a question or wants more information, or possibly wants to do an interview such as this? How can they do that? How can they get in touch with you? Folks, there is no doubt that the devil is doing his best to destroy our society today. And one of the main tactics he employs is division. You can see it every single night on the news. Jerry Zehr is doing his best to bridge those walls of division, mistrust, etc. in bringing together people of different backgrounds, different beliefs and different faiths. He is not doing this to magnify the differences, but to accentuate the commonalities, traits where we are alike. Amen! That is what this is all about, especially in this day and time in which we live. We need more of this and we need more organizations to embrace the work Jerry and others like him are doing. I highly encourage you to go down into the show notes below, click the links and get in touch with Jerry Zeher. Ask your questions – but more importantly, order your books! I believe this is one book you definitely need to add to your reading collection. In fact, order TWO BOOKS! One for you to read and one to pass out to someone you know whom you believe would be blessed by it. That's right, order two or more copies and be a sower. Be a blessing to someone else today! Amen! Religions create conflict all around the world. However, was religion really created so that it polarizes people? Doesn't all religions teach us how to love each other and seek a peaceful world? Did it also say, as long as it's between religious members? I don't really think so. If it did, was it the original intention or was it because the teaching became a doctrine to organize people? In this week's episode, I invited Jerry Zehr, the author of The Peacemaker's Path: Multifaith Reflections to Deepen Your Spirituality. We talk about how we have to look at similarities, not differences between religions to reduce conflict in this world. The old teachings of each religion does not ask us to hate each other but to look for the divine within ourselves, that can love oneself and others to create peace and harmony among us. Our tribalistic nature and power hunger has created walls between us, and we must break through them by understanding that we are all the same. Jerry is an ordained minister and has been a leader in Interfaith ministries for over 30 years. His desire is to help bring shalom to our world today. His book The Peacemaker's Path explores six core teachings in the Major World Religions that can bring unity and healing to our polarized society.Subscribe to my weekly/monthly newsletter here.Guest: Jerry Zehr (LinkedIn)Host: Takatoshi Shibayama (LinkedIn | Twitter)Music: ShowNing (Website)
