In this episode of our podcast, we explore the profound impact of the Age of Enlightenment on our understanding of history, the revolutionary ideas of Marx and Engels, and the intriguing concept of historical materialism. We discuss the spirit of liberty, the works of Max Stirner and Hegel, and the concept of historical materialism, which argues that history is shaped by the struggle between different social classes. We also examine the transition from feudalism to capitalism, and Marx's vision of a future communist society. Finally, we emphasize the importance of thorough research and avoiding simplistic explanations or universal truths. source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_materialism

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was ahead of his time in 1975, when he predicted an end to The Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, among many other changes that he foresaw as arising from the dawning of the ‘Age of Enlightenment.'With The Cold War showing no signs of thawing at the time, most people saw it as a fanciful notion at best. Yet Maharishi, the great seer, saw it as an inevitable outcome of the shift in consciousness that was growing in pace at the time. Following on from our recent episode, The Yugas and the Importance of Understanding Them Correctly, in this episode Thom discusses Kali Yuga, the age of ignorance, in more detail. He explains the role of consciousness and how enlightenment and ignorance can coexist, just as the moon can bring light to the night. Most importantly, he explains that the age of ignorance doesn't place limits on our experience, individually or collectively.Episode Highlights[00:55] Kali Yuga—The Age of Ignorance[02:48] The Dawning of the Age of Enlightenment[04:44] Seven Days of Silence[06:44] The Cold War at its Peak[08:21] The Mutually-Assured Destruction Philosophy[09:53] Things Will Get Better[10:51] Enjoying the Good News[12:00] Incremental Improvements[13:42] Dawning Cannot But Happen in Darkness[15:55] Part of the Solution[17:31] The Meditator's Advantage[19:19] There is a Lot of Work to be Done[20:30] Underutilized Potential[21:46] Impatient Behavior[23:42] Demands Become Pivot Points[25:38] Liberating Our Full Potential[27:11] Resisting the Progress[29:43] I Am Also the Big Self[31:30] We Become Lighthouses[32:52] This is What Light Does[34:59] Who Knew?[36:44] Become Masters of the Transcendental Smile[37:50] We Feel Very SecureUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Cafés rose to prominence in Europe during the late 17th century, because unlike restaurants and eateries specializing in expensive meals, cafés minimized their selection in favor of providing coffee and affordable admission.  This ease of convenience and affordability made them accessible to all different classes...and the establishments became a retreat to foster community and promote the exchange of ideas and philosophies. It's a dynamic that became known as CAFÉ CULTURE and helped trigger the AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT. And Café Culture still exists today since cafés (AKA “coffee shops”) continue to be places where disparate perspectives collide and come together to share and create ideas. Not surprisingly, the Café Culture dynamic has spilled over into the business world where companies (big and small) are focused on finding ways to bring diverse minds together inside their four walls, because it's been proven that diverse teams are able to create more innovative ideas, products, and solutions. In the corporate world this dynamic is called “cognitive or thought diversity,” but those of us who work in the coffee industry still call it, “Café Culture.” Whichever name you use, the fact remains that companies are looking for inspiration, tools, approaches, and strategies to help foster thought diversity (or Café Culture) at their organization. So, it should come as no surprise that one of the most iconic companies in the coffee industry, Keurig, decided to help. Introducing the Keurig Commercial podcast, Café Culture–a podcast with one important mission: to become your “go to” thought diversity resource. We plan to do this by featuring inspiring and eye-opening conversations with influential thought diversity researchers, academics, thought leaders and practitioners who will provide you with insight and information you can use to foster this crucial dynamic at your organization.  Simply put, we're going to help you bring Café Culture to your workplace!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In Bedlam in the New World: A Mexican Madhouse in the Age of Enlightenment (UNC Press, 2022), Cristina Ramos tells us the story of Mexico city's oldest public institution for the insane, the Hospital de San Hipólito. This institution, founded in 1567, was the first mental hospital in the New World. Remarkable as this fact may be, this book is not simply about the singularity of this institution––though by placing this institution au pair with similar ones in the European context Ramos reframes traditional narratives in the history of psychiatry. What makes this book truly remarkable is that Ramos presents San Hipólito as both a microcosm and a colonial laboratory of the Hispanic Enlightenment. According to Ramos, during the late eighteenth-century madness became understood in increasingly medical terms, and San Hipólito served as a site of care, confinement, and knowledge production. Heeding the call of scholars who ask that histories of medicine take a more complex view of religion, Ramos traces the medicalization of madness that took place under the Hispanic Enlightenment and shows that the main agents of medicalization were not philosophers or physicians, but the clergy and more surprisingly still, inquisitors. Transcending the walls of the hospital, Ramos takes us to other colonial institutions such as the Holy Office and the criminal secular courts and shows us the stories of the individuals who were taken to San Hipólito. Inquisitors were fundamental actors in this story because, in their purpose of establishing veracity, they were at the forefront of devising new models for undertaking the complexities of human reasoning and the nuances of intent. Bedlam in the New World is a book beautifully written and poignantly argued and will captive listeners who are interested in histories of medicine, madness, colonialism, and religion! His book, The Wealth of Nations, was a landmark publication and instant bestseller in its day. It is still studied and read today, even if we don't accept all of the ideas inside it as gospel. Charly Coleman's latest book, The Spirit of French Capitalism: Economic Theology in the Age of Enlightenment (Stanford University Press, 2021) is at once a history of ideas, the economy, religion, and material culture. Pursuing the imbrication of the economy and theology with respect to both worldly and spiritual value and wealth, the book explores the emergence and development of a specifically Catholic ethic of capitalism particular to the French context in the century and more leading up to the French Revolution. In its six chapters, the book examines the Eucharist, John Law's system, speculation and debt, usury, consumption, luxury, and more. By the time this reader reached the epilogue, it became clear that The Spirit of French Capitalism is both a history of the Age of Enlightenment and a genealogy/prehistory of the commodity fetishism elaborated by Marx and Marxist thinkers from the nineteenth century to the present. Faith in infinite wealth creation, obsessive consumption, pleasure, abundance, and enchantment are as much a part of the history of capitalism as scarcity, regulation, and restraint. Provocative and complicated, the book will be of great interest scholars and students of the histories of the early modern economy, religion, and the state in France and elsewhere, as well as the history of capitalism more broadly. Roxanne Panchasi is an Associate Professor of History at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada who specializes in twentieth and twenty-first century France and its empire. I interviewed Jerry Hall. Jerry is an author and entrepreneur. Jerry wrote about his deaf and autistic son and how his son's journey was able to teach him as well.  It was from this journey that Jerry developed the New Millennial Success Academy which was created to give people hope for the future. The kind of hope that allows their dreams and goals to come true. Its mission is "To educate and inspire people to discover, and live the life they are intended to live." The Academy teaches its members how to:1) Develop an all-empowering success mindset.2) Become a person of significant influence.3) Build a thriving business or career that brings joy, happiness, and an incredible amount of success, both financially and personally. The Academy provides a well-thought-out system where the member will be taken step by step through the entire success process. Not only will they become aware of the challenges and the obstacles holding them back, but they will finally understand why they do what they do and most importantly how to make the necessary changes. The member will learn what successful people do daily. They will gain knowledge and skills they didn't know existed. Information that was never taught in school and probably never will be. Most importantly, the member will acquire the know-how to become all they wanted to be and live the life they were intended to liveI encourage every listener to follow him, gain insights from his teachings, and buy his books. I interviewed Sifu Rubia. Sifu Rubia is an entrepreneur, national speaker, a teacher. Sifi discovered the benefits of Tai Chi and Qi Gong as a way to heal herself.   As an orphan in Bangladesh, Sifu has navigated the scars of profound loss and trauma, creating intense anxiety in her body and mind, including the traumatic loss on her body of a miscarriage which brought her to her first Qi Gong class, where she discovered the same healing and strength building power Qi cultivation firsthand. Qi Gong and Tai Chi have helped her overcome barriers attached to grief and loss. Sifu Rubia decided that she wanted to be able to pass these benefits on to others to teach as many people as possible just how accessible these ancient technologies are and how much they can help people of all ages take control of their physical and mental wellbeing and bring light into darkness. Since then, she has accumulated hundreds of hours of teachers training, including Yang Family style Tai Chi, Yoga, and Iron Shirt Qi Gong. With over a decade of teaching experience, Sifu Rubia has transformed hundreds of lives, giving students the tools to maintain health, rejuvenate their bodies and recapture youthful energy and tranquility in their life. In addition, Sifu Riba has created an incredible Tai Chi fundamental for Beginners courses. I interviewed Murielle Fellous. Murielle is an Entrepreneur, podcaster, author, certified Quantum Life Coach, EFT(Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping specialist, and an Advanced Reiki Practitioner. Murielle states that being a single mom was hard enough, but when her children became teenagers and began acting out in self-destructive ways, the fear and feelings of powerlessness became overwhelming, and she unknowingly spiraled into depression. It was during this time that she decided to apply what she taught her client in an even more intensive way and double her use of EFT as a foundation of self-healing. Utilizing EFT on herself enabled her to interrupt the emotional spiraling.  EFT eases the physical response we feel to anxiety or trauma by tapping meridian points on the body and intercepting the "fight, flight or freeze response".Co-parenting with the Universe"Murielle founded Co-parenting with the Universe podcast and coaching business. She helps single moms prevent the downward spiraling into negative emotions and depression so that they can connect with their power and inner wisdom to co-parent with the Universe. Roger has purposefully embarked on living to cross items off his bucket list.   His first item was walking or traveling 490 miles in the north of Spain on the Camino de Santiago.  After crossing this off his list, Roger quit his job to pursue his vision. He started a weekly podcast, "The Crossing It Off podcast," where he interviews guests who have bucket lists and what adventures they've encountered while perusing their list.  Roger feels that he has gained long-lasting relationships that have changed his life forever due to living an intentional life.  Roger states that he enjoyed getting to know new people and having in-depth conversations that have the potential to inspire and that are fun. In this episode, I reposted what I believe is the most important principle that we must activate to begin our journey of Self Development. Self Love is the very first principle we need to master for us to start true healing and become the best human spirit while here on this earth. I've interviewed over one hundred people, and every one of them in some way mentions the importance of Self Love. You cannot heal until you first look deep into yourself to see your pain and begin to heal your trauma because we look at the world through the eyes of our trauma. We are creators, and as creators, we must face our darkness, and then and only then can we begin to create the world and life that we want.
