Curious about writing books in more than one genre? Angela Haas shares a behind-the-scenes look at writing science fiction and romantic comedy! In today's episode, we're going behind the scenes of Angela Haas's journey to hear how she self-published not one but two books in the last six months—one's that's a really fun space opera and the other that's a romantic comedy. You'll hear about her experience working with book editors, how she approaches the writing process as a die-hard pantser, and what made her choose self-publishing for all three of her books. In the episode, you'll hear us talk about things like:[06:50] What happened when Angela submitted her outline for feedback in an online writing course (it wasn't mine!) and got negative feedback from the instructor who called her space opera story “spoofy”[13:45] How understanding this one writing technique (spoiler alert: it's “show, don't tell") helped improve the quality of Angela's manuscripts, and what exactly made this tricky concept finally make sense[15:05] What made Angela (a die-hard pantser) finally embrace outlining—and what her unique approach to outlining looks like (spoiler alert: it's flexible and creative, something all pantsers would love!)[17:45] What happened when Angela hired an editor who started re-writing passages from her story (and why this almost made her give up on writing altogether)[20:10] Why Angela decided to self-publish both of her books—including what she learned from researching traditional publishing and indie publishing and the factors that made her choose self-publishingIf you're an aspiring author who dreams of self-publishing a novel to have more control over the creative process, you're going to love this episode!

Others—like Sara Lobkovich—ditch the coloring book altogether and make their own rules. A proud introvert, ADHDer, and change-maker, Sara turned years of navigating life's twists into two books designed to help others do the same. In Part 1, we'll hear how she went from feeling like an outsider to building a thriving career by embracing what makes her different. How much meaning is lost when you are reading a translation?Today is a special episode where I am going over my findings from reading 'O Alquimista' in the original Portuguese and it's English translation side by side. I found that although the grammar prompt some differences the biggest effect was stylistic choices by the translator. This includes minor things like cutting out words/sentences to larger alterations such as removing potentially 'racist' remarks. Two books take dramatically different approaches to the Christmas story. First, in Everyone This Christmas Has a Secret, reluctant detective Ernest Cunningham finds himself in the middle of another murder mystery. His ex-wife's partner has been killed and every suspect is a master of the art of deception. The book is the third installment of comedian Benjamin Stevenson's Ernest Cunningham mysteries series. In today's episode, Stevenson joins NPR's Ayesha Rascoe for a discussion that touches on the essential rules of the genre, the fun of writing to the holiday theme, and the commonalities between his comedy and writing practices. We then hear from Dolly Parton about her new picture book, Dolly Parton's Billy the Kid Comes Home for Christmas. She speaks with NPR's Michel Martin about her real-life French bulldog, the inspiration for her children's literacy program, and her annual Christmas traditions. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Two books of essays consider the female experience through different stages of life. First, Kate Kennedy's One in a Millennial documents coming of age as a member of a highly-scrutinized generation. In today's episode, Kennedy joins NPR's Juana Summers for a conversation that touches on AOL Instant Messenger, college pre-games, and self-editing our own desires. We then hear from Jenny Slate about her new book Lifeform, a compilation of experimental essays that follow her life through five phases: Single, True Love, Pregnancy, Baby, and Ongoing. Slate joined Here & Now's Emiko Tamagawa at a live event in Boston, where the two discussed the confidence it takes to write down our ideas, fear and bravery in love, and Slate's perspective on childbirth and motherhood. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

It got me thinking about my culture, my gender, and how I've come to where I am today. In this podcast, I share stories of the women in my family, and some personal experiences about resilience, self-awareness, and breaking free from societal expectations. This isn't a political rant—it's about personal and collective empowerment and how we move forward. It's about choosing love over hate, showing up for ourselves and others, and taking control of our lives. It's about financial independence, challenging gender norms, and confronting some of the unconscious biases we carry. If you've ever felt stuck or like you're navigating the same struggles that I do, this episode is for you. Let's break barriers, build each other up, and create the life we deserve—together. As promised, here is the link to the article I recently wrote, entitled "The Tale of Two Books (and How I Broke the Binding on my Unwritten Instruction Manual)."Pause and ask yourself why things are the way they are... and who told you it had to be that way. We don't need to be victims to societal norms. We are allowed to question things when they are unjust or don't make sense. We are allowed to make changes in our lives for the better. Thank you for listening over the years and helping us reach our 200th episode! To celebrate this milestone, we invited special guests to call the Book Cougars hotline and recommend two forthcoming books they can't wait for all of us to read. This idea was inspired by Ann Kingman and Michael Kindness, hosts of the podcast Books on the Nightstand, who had a segment called “Two Books We Can't Wait for You to Read.” Chris and Emily met through Books on the Nightstand; their sunset inspired our sunrise. As an homage, we were thrilled to have Ann and Michael contribute to the segment along with other guests that have been featured on the podcast over the past seven years including Amy Tector, Andrea Wang, Bianca Marais, Caroline Leavitt, Davina from BookBrowse, Fiona Davis, Hank Phillippi Ryan, Jennifer Savran Kelly, Jenna Miller, Rachel Barenbaum, Kelcey Ervick, Luanne Rice, Jung Yun, and our Mystery Man – John Valeri. We asked our author friends to shout out their new or forthcoming books. Your TBR List just might explode! #SorryNotSorry And that's not the only exciting segment in this episode. We crunched the numbers and share our Listener Top Ten Reads of 2023. They are: Tom Lake – Ann Patchett Hello Beautiful – Ann Napolitano Demon Copperhead – Barbara Kingsolver The Covenant of Water – Abraham Verghese Lessons in Chemistry – Bonnie Garmus The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store – James McBride Yellowface – R.F. Emily visited White River Books and the Carbondale Public Library in Colorado. She also attended Aspen Words featuring Ann Patchett in conversation with Elizabeth McCracken. Chris paid her respects to the Barnes and Noble closing in Naperville, Illinois (they're opening a new format store in nearby Oswego), and visited one of her favorite used bookstores, The Frugal Muse in Darien. She also attended Biography International Organization's Biography Lab, an online forum about the craft. If you're in the Connecticut area, join us on Friday, February 2nd at 5:30 pm ET at Bank Square Books for the launch of Luanne Rice's new book Last Night. Then on Sunday, February 11th at 5 pm ET, Chris's wife Laura Thoma will be reading from her work-in-progress as part of the Chester Arts & Literary Weekend. Reminder: our first quarter readalong book is Indigo by Beverly Jenkins. All the books we mention in this episode are in the show notes at https://www.bookcougars.com/blog-1/2024/episode200.
