Cheap Star Wars ripoff, or a more brilliant parody than Space Balls? This week, Ben and Eugene look at the Roger Corman film, Starcrash!

“I cried throughout the entire thing. It made me want to be a better man.” We're at the end of an era, folks. The Nicolas Cage season of Because You Watched Starcrash draws to a close with our obligatory holiday movie and a spectacular piece of metafiction. Your Distinguished Professors and salute the man of the hour. Topics discussed include our latest accompanying whiskey, yet another manifestation of the Magical Negro, movies that get dads to cry, Cash's alignment is called into question, nostalgia for pre-9/11 airport security, the apparent intense bone-ability of Jack, the lack of clear thinking at the airport, Téa Leoni's shower scene, the relative lack of crazy-Cage in FM, comparison with The Good Place (with light spoilers), Jack's life is actually pretty good prior to the glimpse, speculation about the dimensional or time-travel issues involved with the glimpse, Cage's bad Boston accent, Nicky's outfit and hairstyle as a callback to Cage's infamous 1990 talk show appearance, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, some obligatory ribbing of M. Night Shyamalan, a nihilistic callback to Pig, speculation about drinking a beer underwater, parallel with Ex Machina, amazing Cage/ Pascal chemistry, Cage making out with Nicky, our three favorite movies, always trusting our shamanic instincts as thespians, the cruel end of the glimpse, the absurdity of being “trapped” in marriage to a Hollywood actress, parallels between FM and a Hallmark movie, a bleak interpretation of the end of FM, a quick PKD reference, being haunted by a lost alternate past, not one but TWO Nick Cage Queries, and our future date with Paddington 2.
Devin & James are back in the Den, and are go for launch! As we return to our Tour of Italy, this time the action will take us right into the stratosphere with ITALIAN SCIENCE FICTION! We start with the doomed visitors to Mario Bava's PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES, a still underappreciated film that inspired a generation of Sci-Fi writers and directors. We then swing into more action with the utterly bizarre, early body horror, Antonio Margheriti's WILD, WILD PLANET (it's wild enough to deserve it twice in the title). Then we take off for a galaxy far, far away-ish with Luigi Cozzi's Star Wars wannabe, STARCRASH. Finally, we follow up with more Luigi Cozzi with the (occasionally) explosive CONTAMINATION. Strap in, folks... this is gonna be a messy ride.

The exploitation world of Star Wars rip-offs: you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. This week, we're joined by part-time Dark Lord of the Sith, Walter Kafka, to check out Starcrash (1978), directed by Luigi Cozzi, and The Man Who Saved the World - better known these days as Turkish Star Wars (1982), directed by Çetin İnanç. In all honesty, we don't think it's possible to spoil these two slices of psychedelic sci-fi wonderment, so there will be no Spoiler Territory this week. Buckle in for intergalactic David Hasselhoff hair, Caroline Munro in a vinyl bikini, diabolical Joe Spinell in a giant clawship and some absolutely mindbending insanity from the otherworldly desertscape of Cappadocia, Turkey. Steven is also working on a new translation of the original Yor - the Hunter From the Future comics, so there is plenty to discuss! If you want to follow Steven Ross and find out more about these projects you can find him on Twitter and Instagram. We would love to hear from you if you have any favourite Italian comics or your memories of seeing Starcrash or Yor for the first time. In this episode, we go back up to Oshkosh, where another crash has occurred during the massive AirVenture event. This time, a Diamond Twin Star aircraft was making its approach when the left wing and main gear impacted the runway. The plane ended up overshooting the runway and coming to rest in the grass. Nobody was injured during the incident thankfully. Follow Amy Tango Charlie on X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/atoocpodcast

We discuss the 1978 Sci Fi film Star Crash
A lovely campy sci fi double bill this week. Enjoy - Follow us on Instagram @championcinemapod
Vampire's Kiss (1988) “You're in the goddamn crapper, Loew, and I'm trying to take a dump. So either shut up and leave the acting lessons for home or go back to the ladies' room.” Is it a deft American Psycho-level satire, a taut supernatural or psychological thriller, or insane, ridiculous crap? That's the question facing our Distinguished Professors as they discuss the 1988 Nicolas Cage meme-fest Vampire's Kiss. Let's see if they find an answer. Topics discussed include gratuitous displays of alphabet-yelling, Cage's love for this movie and role, Loew as a Renfield, a plug for proper hydration, the mystery of the imaginary (?) psychiatrist, Renfield's a bug-eating simp, a plan for the holiday special that we don't follow, a digression into the literary origins of vampires, late-80s hair and fashion, musing on whether Cage's antics fit this movie, the role of ambiguity here, parallels with Joker, Loew's awful Philadelphian accent, weird camera shots, the fake dialogue with Jackie on the way back to Loew's apartment, Loew's gradual descent into madness and how this movie takes its time, Alva as the center of both the movie's corporate satire and its cruelty, the ambiguity of the murder, weird comedic moments, a possible fourth wall break, the roach-eating scene, Nosferatu playing in the background, the violent mimes and veering into the territory of the art film, Loew's façade of culture, vampire practice, “BOO HOO!”-ing, Cage's physical acting, a cheap postcard to New York, Loew's prior scumbag behavior, and the state of contemporary art in the 1980s. Plus, look: soup!
This week, Patches and Da7e have been left alone again, so they invite returning guest Jordan Hoffman back onto the show for a free-form discussion about recasting Gilligan's Island, Starcrash and torrent ethics, Unfrosted again, cereals (and hot cereals), Blue Angels and Deep Sky in IMAX, solar flares and go bags, Kingdom of the Planet […]

Roden and Thunder do some star crashing.
The Emperor: For the space of three minutes, every molecule on this planet will be immobilized. But after the third minute, the green ray loses it's power. Time will flow once more and everything will explode. Simon: Three minutes are enough, father.
What would it look like if a high school theater group made their own space-adventure production? What if that group had the assistance of the stop-motion animation experts who produced Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1946 or the California Raisins Christmas in 1986? How about if it were scientifically-necessary that space flight suits consisted of extremely low-cut bikinis and thigh-high leather boots? Well, in that case, you'd probably end up with something like Starcrash, a not-well-done space odyssey that walked the fine line of not being good enough to be good, but also not being bad enough to be good. This one managed to not really register much of a reaction out of either of the guys. It wasn't unwatchable, so check it out if you like. As Brandon's mom would say, it was fine. Starcrash Final Grade: Steve found this to be a low-quality offering, but not one to strictly avoid, which would put it in the second quintile of the movies featured in this podcast. 2 of 5 Brandon was taken in by some sort of quaint charm he found in this movie, and thinks it's at least a mid-tier kind of thing since he didn't perceive the people who made this movie to be condescending pricks who think they are better than him, unlike the Quentin Depieux. 2/3 out of 5. Cocktail of the Week: Unnamed Cocktail Brandon Made Up 2 oz Spice Rum 2 oz Strawberry Smoothie thing from the produce department 1 oz Aperol 1/2 oz Simple Syrup 1/2 oz Lime Juice Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and strain into a rocks glass. Place a hollowed out disc of an orange peel on top, fill it with the highest proof rum you can find, and light it ablaze. Garnish with a couple cherries. A pretty-standard rum and fruit juice drink. Tastes like fruit. An imminently-drinkable mix. Maybe even good enough for a name sometime. Ho-Ho-Hallmark Holiday Special A Christmas Wedding Tail (2011), A Christmas Melody (2015), and Christmas Mail (2010) “Don't worry, I'm a city girl. This small town is not for me.” Welcome to our 2023 Holiday Special, in which your three Distinguished Professors move from the big city to a small town and find love in only the most formulaic of ways! We invite our podcast's first special guest, Jackie, to experience this holiday Hallmark (and faux-Hallmark) hell with us. Topics covered include multiple false starts, the lack of conflict and deceit in the classic Hallmark movie, the general definition of a Hallmark movie, a quick mention of Santa's Summer Home, the amazing whiteness of the couples involved and moments of casual racism, a defense of the dog voice-acting, a bit of research about MOMA and MOCA, bitchy antagonists, the foolishness of getting married over a major Christian holiday, desperately searching for a conflict and a dog love story (and dignity for the annoying musician pal) in ACWT, the weird platonic gal pal singer in ACM, death as the new divorce, the actual conflict and lack of cinematography in CM, a quick comparison of the auteur directorial work of Mariah Carey and William Shatner, the increasing diversity of these movies over time, the superior soundtrack of ACM, Lacey Chabert and some Party of Five talk, Folgers product placement, May-December shenanigans, a stolen joke about Peter North, comparison of CM and Elf, picks for next year's Christmas Special, Mariah Carey's weird-looking hands, some fine double entendre, CM as a bought-on-Wish version of a Hallmark movie, the role of wish fulfillment and predictability in these movies, trickery on behalf of supernatural or mundane forces, emotionally-scarring animal films, the definition of a groupie, manipulative children, Lacey Chabert's odd resemblance to public groping enthusiast Lauren Boebert, the specter of dead parents, the grimmer specter of failure, reflection on what makes a good formulaic movie, the living hell of the looming threat of the ACWT family honeymoon, the 10/3 ratio, a standing invitation to Jay Mohr, and keeping it Hallmark.
Viva The Hoff! Escucha el episodio completo en la app de iVoox, o descubre todo el catálogo de iVoox Originals
Today we're venturing into the B-movie vault to tackle what may well be my favorite Star Wars ripoff in Luigi Cozzi's wildly entertaining Starcrash! This one's got Joe Spinell as a Darth Vader wannabe, Christopher Plummer as the Emperor, The Hoff in one of his earliest roles, and the inimitable Caroline Munro traversing space in a bikini years before Leia would don one on Jabba's barge! This one is a stone cold cult classic. Willy's Wonderland (2021) - Because You Watched Starcrash
Your two best star friends turn their eyes to the world of 70's and 80's film, as they pit four different Star Wars rip-offs against each other in a true battle beyond the Star Wars! We've watched and will discuss the high highs and lows lows of Message From Space, Starcrash, Battle Beyond the Stars, and The Man Who Saved the World (better known as Turkish Star Wars)! And who better to join us for a discussion of low budget sci-fi cinema of the past than our Canadian correspondent, Geoff Clarke? All that, plus we're giving our initial impressions of Ahsoka! May the Varda be with you!
“I had a miserable time tonight because of you.” It's our first Francis Ford Coppola joint on Because You Watched Starcrash! And Kathleen Turner! Oh, and some other guy who was once named Coppola is in it, too. Your Distinguished Professors watched an early entry in the Nicholas Cage-verse, Peggy Sue Got Married, and now you're going to hear about it! Topic discussed include Madonna's genitals, the right level of weird vs. Nicholas Cage-levels of weird, Charlie's insane appearance at the class reunion, a brief comparison with Somewhere in Time, the transition point from the 50s to the 60s and yet another appearance of David Sirota's Back to Our Future, the inevitable contrast with Back to the Future, Charlie's lack of transformation or growth, a brief discussion of the Ordo Templi Orientis and the Oddfellows, John Carradine's last movie, what we'd do if we could go back in time knowing what we know now, the appeal of the 1950s for white and middle- to upper-class folks, the fine soundtrack, more casual 1980s anti-Asian racism, Michael's book's dedication as the only evidence this isn't a dream, the Cage vs. Turner libel lawsuit, Charlie's near-murder of Peggy Sue, Charlie as the worst of the 1950s and the worst of the 1980s, lots of subtlety, a brief moment of praise for Sofia Coppola, the role of wish fulfillment here, Michael as the flawed critique of the 1950s, the deep mystery of the grandparents, Peggy Sue's change of perception, Jim Carey as a force for sanity and normalcy in comparison, and a debate about whether this is a “movie” or a “film.” Follow us on Facebook! Lee, Leah, and their friend and fellow podcaster Gary Hill travel through the cosmos this episode as they check out Luigi Cozzi's "Starcrash" (1978), a fun Italian "Star Wars" rip-off starring Caroline Munro, Marjoe Gortner, Joe Spinell, David Hasselhoff, and Christopher Plummer (!). Sexy costumes, big hair, clunky stop-motion, the lava lamp of death, a hillbilly robot cop, and handy magical powers out of nowhere are just some of things touched upon, as well as listener comments, and what the hosts have watched as of late. “This is a story whose chapters were carefully written.” In their ongoing exploration of the filmography of one Nicolas “Jor-El” Cage, the Distinguished Professors have watched the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man, which has 100% less depth and 1000% fewer boobs (don't check my math) than the original. Topics covered include the intense dumbness of the conspiracy to trap our hero, the clunkiness of the dialogue, the universal dour evil of women in this movie universe, ACAB (All Cops Are Bumblers), the Safety Dance, misogyny and the awful addition of gender conflict to this movie, the “dark comedy” issue, multiple JJ Abrams references, the necessity for some people to get their stupid asses stung to death by bees, the uncertain origin of elbow patches, the cinematic creepiness of twins, Don Quixote references, the on-the-nose William Blake quote, the insistence on the omnipresence of misanthropy in a work of misogyny, Willow's unclear motivation, a quick shout-out to Robert Evans and Behind the Bastards regarding Ellen Burstyn's mistreatment on the set of The Exorcist, the intense pointlessness of watching the PG-13 cut of this movie, the Children of God and “flirty fishing,” and the final middle finger of dedicating this crap to Johnny Ramone. Acomi and Turk182 wish upon the twin suns they orbit around for a movie that will make them love Star Wars again. The suns blazed upon them the 1979 Italian Star Wars ripoff, The Humanoid, starring Richard "Jaws" Kiel from James Bond and Happy Gilmore. The plot... We don't know. What we do know, is it has storm trooper like soldiers, a mysterious boy who's part Luke Skywalker and part Aang, the Last Airbender, funky hair, a Darth Vader-esque suit, and a poorly designed robot dog. Only some that comes from a wretched hive of scum and villainy could make a movie so obvious, and so boring. If you're looking for another Starcrash, this isn't the movie you're looking for. Move along. Join Acomi and Turk while they fight the urge to sleep, literally fighting to stay wake, and make it through the only thing more boring than a two Powerpoint presentation. Acomi and Turk182, along the occasional special guest, provide running commentary of awfulsome movie and TV shows. The hosts select movies that either one, or both, have never seen. All jokes and comments are improvised. NO PREPARED JOKES OR COMMENTS! During recording, the movies are watched at a low volume and with the subtitles on. Viewers may want to turn subtitles on as well to enhance the viewing experience. So, cue up the audio, ready the movie, and hit play when we say so. Note: This video is the commentary recorded by Acomi and Turk182, and selected screenshots. It is NOT a viewable copy of the film. The commentary can be enjoyed on its own, but if you want to experience the Let's Watch in all its glory, you'll need your own copy of the movie. Most of the movies viewed can be streamed online for free. #OMTWF #KorovaEntertainment #LetsWatch #LW #Acomi #Turk182 #awfulsome #The Humanoid #RichardKiel #Jaws #HappyGilmore #StarWarsripoff #notStarWars Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. Dragon on The Couch: The Dragon watched The Menu (HBO), both her and Berto thought it was a good film that becomes a clever horror movie. Next, she watched Earth II (Theatres?), a fan made movie using disaster films. She thought it was interesting and entertaining. Next, she watched Smile (Paramount), she thought it was a good horror film and enjoyed it. The Dragon watched M3gan (Theatres), and felt it was a decent movie, but is excited that horror films seem to be having a good resurgence. Next, she watched Aftersun (Rent). She was expecting not to like it as it seemed like a depressing drama, but she was surprised that she enjoyed the film. Finally she finished White Lotus (HBO), and enjoyed both seasons. Berto on the Bed: Berto started this week by watching Rocky II (Netflix), he was surprised as he remembered this movie being sillier, but he really enjoyed it. Next, he watched Jurassic World Dominion (Prime), he thought it was absolutely terrible and declared it “everything wrong with modern Hollywood”. Next, he watched Marry Me (Prime), an awful Rom Com with no Com. He thought it was hampered with what he imagines is Jennifer Lopez's “perfect” character. Finally, Berto goes to Joe Bob Corner. First he watched Angel (Shudder), which was a surprisingly good, enjoyable film, despite it being about a teenage prostitute. Then he watched Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 (Shudder), an insanely enjoyable bad horror film, filled with banter to mock. In this week's deep dive, we watched the 1978 SciFi film Starcrash, currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

What if Star Wars wasn't helmed by George Lucas? What if everything you've thought about sci-fi space operas was entirely wrong? What if a southern fried robot dressed like a poor man's Darth Vader was your only hope for survival? WELL GUESS WHAT? On this week's episode of Save Trash Cinema we're taking our trash to outer space to answer those questions and much, much more when we cover the outrageously bonkers 1978 trashterpiece--STARCRASH!
We have our brains fried by Count Zarth Arn in Starcrash (1978), The Humanoid (1979) starring Richard Kiel (Jaws in the James Bond series) in the title role, and H.G. Wells' The Shape of Things to Come (1979) with Jack Palance.
Boy, oh boy, do we have a fun one this Saturday. Episode 55, and it's 1978's Starcrash, with Unlikely Couple DIPA, a collaboration from @tortugobrewing and @amarokbrewing. This unabashed ripoff of Star Wars has Caroline Munro, Christopher Plummer, and David Hasselhoff. The beer, generously provided by the fine folks at Tortugo, is a smooth, fruity west coast double that matches up with the silly fun of watching the actors deliver some truly odd lines with straight faces. Christopher Plummer, man, he said yes to this. Join us Saturday. Thanks for listening! Check out our website SUBSCRIBE: to the show on Apple Podcast or Google Play.
