Travis Book is a Practical Romantic, ep. 239

After two decades in The Infamous Stringdusters, the Grammy-award winning neo bluegrass band, Travis Book releases his rock americana debut: Love and Other Strange Emotions. That's not to say that Book, who thrives on collaboration, got here on his own. The Colorado musician (now residing in Western North Carolina), was raised by parents who went out their way to ensure that young Travis respected music and had access to instruments. His mother bought him his first bass guitar and his dad allowed him to buy Red Hot Chilli Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magik (even though it had a parental advisory sticker on the cover). As Travis went off to college in Durango, CO, he found a supportive and vibrant Bluegrass scene where he encountered future members of Greensky Bluegrass (Anders Beck), Leftover Salmon (Andy Thorn) and The Jon Stickley Trio. Those musicians would form their first bluegrass band Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band, which has just reissued a remastered version of their album Cabin in the Hills. In our conversation, Travis talks about his brief time in Nashville, after he auditioned for The Stringdusters and got the gig as their upright bass player and vocalist. Spoiler alert: he felt VERY intimidated. We get into why he loves collaborations so much and has chosen to create his variety show turned podcast, The Travis Book Happy Hour, into an engine for unique performances with guests like Lindsay Lou, Jim Lauderdale, Sierra Hull and many more. The Happy Hour, which started in Spring 2020, was first set without an audience, which made Travis let go of his attachment to their reaction using wisdom borrowed from Eastern philosophy. He also explains how he is romantic, yet practical in everything he works to accomplish. Travis is a literal ray of positivity, so if you're having a bad day, I promise that this conversation's gonna lift you up in a seriously not-cornball way. Play Episode Listen Later Oct 20, 2023 31:41

As 1975 turned into 1976, The Hamlin Avenue Boyz made a memorable road trip from Los Angeles to Dallas in Vince's old red VW bus and did so by skirting the U.S. Mexico border all the way from San Diego to El Paso. Pretty much nothing was seen along the way but scorpions, snakes, and occasional illegals making their way to a new life in America.  The purpose of the trip was to move Vince from his former Hollywood digs to a new adventure in Texas.  What worldly possessions Vince owned at the time were found in that VW bus.  That along with a case of Coors Beer (previously only available west of the Mississippi River), a carton of Marlboro Cigarettes and a fairly large quantity of Panama Red secured just prior to departure from a Hollywood stuntman Vince befriended during his days spent on many a movie studio casting couch. The Boyz spent their time driving day and night, drinking, laughing, smoking cigarettes, and occasionally rolling up some ‘Red' in Vince's old red VW Bus.  The entire trip kept them close to the border, which at that time was a difficult line to see or follow.  Sometimes the road would take a turn south for a while and it was not easy to tell whether you were still in America or Mexico. On the edge of America's southern border, just south of El Paso right where New Mexico and Texas meet Old Mexico lies the famous rough-and-tumble Mexican town of Juarez.  Late one night a couple of hours west of El Paso; the road seemed to once again take a turn to the south only this time it didn't turn back east or north so the Boyz didn't know what else to do so they kept going.  Their decision that night was certainly influenced by the unusual contents that could be found in the VW bus. As the Boyz kept driving they could see lights on the horizon from some kind of a town a few miles up ahead and before long they also saw a sign for El Paso pointing in a different direction away from that town.  At the time, the Boyz didn't put 2+2 together, but the sign they saw pointing to El Paso was a little different than others they had seen along the way.  This one read “Por Aqui A El Paso” 12.6 km.  Even in their late-night condition, the Boyz thought it was a little strange that the distance to El Paso was not in ‘miles', but kilometers. The Boyz later figured out they had indeed wandered just south of the border under cover of darkness within a few miles of Juarez, but ultimately they wandered back north across the border well before reaching El Paso. "Rob and Seth take over the patio at Arden’s Garden in the Little Five Points section of Atlanta to interview, and even enjoy some brief performances from Jon Stickley. This Chapel Hill/Durham-based acoustic musician may very well owe some of his fiery approach to bands indigenous to “The Triangle” (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) like Polvo and SharkQuest. Stickley talks about their influence, and about his days drumming in punk bands. He would meet Andy “Crawdad” Thorn (Larry Keel Experience, Leftover Salmon) in high school, and when Thorn gave Jon some Bela Fleck and David Grisman cds, Jon’s life was forever changed. Even while playing in punk bands and his own indie rock band (an experience that would ultimately be key in his songwriting development), Jon would become a fervent fan and student of bluegrass and the mandolin. While an opportunity to be an assistant park ranger in Alaska did not allow him to accept Anders Beck’s (Greensky Bluegrass) initial invitation for him to join Broke Mountain, he would eventually join them on guitar. He also revisited the mandolin to tour with North Carolina bands the Biscuit Burners and Town Mountain. However a fellow musician noticed his strong love of the guitar and encouraged Jon to focus on that. Jon agreed and would in turn decide to start his own band. Around this same time Billy Gilmore (Grass Is Dead) introduced Jon to Lyndsay Pruitt. Pruitt had toured with Black Mozart Ensemble, a side project of Flecktones drummer, “Futureman.” Pruitt would join Jon’s trio, and her playing quickly became an immediate influence on Jon’s songwriting. We also learn about the unusual residency their new drummer Hunter “JamChops” Deacon experienced. The band not only does more “off the map” improvisation since Deacon joined, but some of these improvisations have also become seeds for future compositions. During the closing segment, Seth and Rob share some of their experiences at this year’s Electric Forest festival and we are treated to two songs from the Jon Stickley Trio cd, Maybe Believe. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com All social media management, promotion and website maintenance/building done by Harris Sullivan. wTnS is a proud partner of the Osiris Podcast Network. Jon Stickley is a Durham native, (you may know his brother Jeff as the drummer for Hammer No More The Fingers) but in recent years he's called Asheville home. Stickley was one of the founders of Big Fat Gap, a North Carolina bluegrass institution, and has since gone on to perform alongside roots music icons like Larry Keel, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams and more. After all of his band-based endeavors, Stickley settled into the solo digs and found himself two stunningly talented musicians. Lyndsay Pruett is on fiddle, bringing her classically trained skills to the forefront by adding in hints of Latin and Jazz influence while drummer Patrick Armitage pulls in subtle hip-hop influence to make for a well-rounded and unique take on this typified genre. Pruett and Armitage have worked with Futureman and hip-hop group Atmosphere respectively, so their back catalog provides a wonderful glimpse into the work they produce. The trio came in for some live performances and interviews on Carolina Grown this past Friday before their set at the NC Roots Showcase at Tir Na Nog. The band discussed their origins, influences and forthcoming album throughout the segment, but most importantly they laid down some seriously stunning tunes.
