After years of performing around the country, Arthur and Chris have made a lot of musical memories. Both have enjoyed their time in the award-winning bands; The Wooks, The 23 String Band, and Wolfpen Branch. They are excited to continue making Kentucky Bluegrass music together and to represent their roots with some of the best musicians in the Kentucky scene today.

Stumbling upon a dusty mandolin in an antique store wasn't just a chance encounter for Ryan—it was the spark that ignited a passion for bluegrass music. Join us as we recount the fascinating journey of The Tuesday String Band, musicians who transitioned from the world of jazz music and outdoor rehearsals at Western Oregon University to the vibrant and inclusive community of bluegrass music. Embracing the soulful sounds of acoustic instruments, they found a new musical identity. Our discussion also shines a light on the communal spirit of bluegrass, a genre that defies the often elitist environments found in university jazz settings. Inspired by contemporary artists like Billy Strings, Gage, Mason, and Ryan explore how bluegrass seamlessly blends with other genres, giving rise to innovative sub-genres. They share their experiences and what it has been like for them building community, highlighting their weekly residency at Gilgamesh Brewing, where audience engagement, humor, and personal interaction became key to creating memorable performances. Finally, we reflect on the transformative power of music in personal growth and career fulfillment. In a world often driven by societal pressures and outdated notions of success, embracing music as a career path is both a bold and rewarding journey. This week, Toronto, Canada old time trio The Lonesome Ace Stringband recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park during our annual String Band festival. Also, interviews with Lonesome Ace founder and banjo player Chris Coole. “The Lonesome Ace Stringband bring grit, skill and abandon to Americana music, bridging old-time, bluegrass and folk traditions into a seamless hybrid of original material that is at once fresh and timeless. The trio's sound is anchored in the fiddle and clawhammer banjo of John Showman and Chris Coole. They are joined by a rotating cast of extraordinary upright bassists (including founding member Max Malone, James Mceleney, and Lotus Wight). The band moves freely between a sound so commanding it doesn't seem like it should be coming from a stringband, to a sparse fragility that draws the listener closer. Whether singing about climate change, modern love, BBQ techniques or life's inevitable existential crises, the band cuts to the core. They can also turn and churn out a tune with so much verve that it will make your heart spin and set the dance floor swirling.” https://lonesomeace.com/about In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers an archival recording of Ozark original Lisa Wiede singing the cowboy ballad “John Martin Duffy,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater discusses the seafaring song “Jamestown Homeward Bound.”
Send us a text The lineup of the project known as Colorado Junction has changed lineups a couple of times over the years, with musicians leaving to focus on their personal lives or pursue other career opportunities. In 2025, the band will be performing more frequently in a new lineup, which longtime member Troy Yanel refers to as “Colorado Junction 3.0.” That lineup consists of Yanel on guitar, Chris Spurlock on mandolin, David Weisbart on bass, Bobby Krech on fiddle, and all four providing vocals. All four of these musicians love playing together, and in fact, they've been playing together for years before “Colorado Junction 3.0.” Much like Yanel answered a Craigslist ad in Nashville, Spurlock answered a Craigslist ad that resulted in him meeting Yanel and Krech for the first time. They played in a group called Mighty Pleasin, with a fourth member, Quinn McKay, on bass, and Krech ended up bringing Spurlock into another group of his, Strung High String Band. Spurlock and Krech still play in that group today, and in fact, the two are now not only close friends and musical partners but also direct neighbors, living in houses right next to each other. After the COVID-19 quarantine period, Weisbart answered another Craiglist ad from Yanel, so now, the four will revitalize Colorado Junction in this current lineup. Ultimately, the group hopes that audiences will continue supporting live, local music, that their shows will encourage them to do so, and that they're able to spread joy to the people who come to see their performances. “There was no Command-Zed back then!” John Wood engineered or produced some of the most magical, timeless and affecting records ever made - by Nick Drake, John Martyn, the McGarrigles, Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, John Cale, Squeeze and many more. He's 85 now and looks back here at a luminous career that started with mastering singles at Decca and transferred to Sound Techniques, the mecca he co-founded in an old cowshed in Chelsea when takes were spontaneous and even the tape-op was part of the performance. He misses those days, when albums were organic and the labels had less control, and talks here about … … “the age when sound had perspective and seemed three-dimensional”. … Nick Drake's confidence and his guiding lights - eg the Beach Boys and Randy Newman (“who I'd never heard of”). And his final nighttime sessions. … the way Fairport recorded – “We're only going to do it once” – and why they could make three albums a year. …managing the girls in the Incredible String Band, “especially when Licorice played drums”. … John Cale in “maniac mode” and his sudden and unexpected friendship with Nick Drake. … Cale and Nico at the Chelsea Hotel. … and why ‘Geoff Muldaur Is Having A Wonderful Time' was the job he remembers the fondest. Also mentioned: the Downliners Sect, Judy Collins, The Marmalade, Graham Gouldman and Squeeze. John's got nothing to plug and just wanted to talk to us. Today's guest really brings back some memories. Please welcome Sheila Shukla from Magnolia Street String Band. Sheila and I go way back. Like WAAAAAY back, all the way to elementary school. There's a little bit of catching up in this episode, sprinkled throughout Sheila's story. She talks about how she used to force her sister, Rita, to help her figure out harmonies she was hearing before they could go out and play. And eventually, growing up in 80's and 90's New Jersey, she got into metal and alternative music pretty heavily. But at one point, she became mesmerized by bluegrass. She tells exactly what happened and when it happened. She became so obsessed with the sound in college and had a great support system to help her learn guitar and figure out how to play what she was hearing in her head. But life snuck in and put some of the musical ambitions on hold for a bit. But music has a tendency to make its way to the forefront. And so it did with Sheila. She met some like-minded folks and formed Magnolia Street String Band in 2013. The band has a very impressive pedigree and a beautiful classic bluegrass sound. After some false starts, they released their debut in 2019 and then had to wait with the rest of the world for things to open up post-COVID to play again. Sheila and the band have a new album coming out and it's unique in the bluegrass world. It's called By The Light Of The Moon and it's basically a children's album that doesn't sound childish. It's written for kids, keeping in mind that parents have to listen to it at the same time. So why not make it enjoyable for both? Look for it starting on National Children's Music Day, October 4th. David First “I define immersive as the first time I realized that there was a bigger universe than my daily life.” David First is a many-sided composer-musician having played in Dead Cheese, a hippie guitar band in his youth, performed with Cecil Taylor in Carnegie Hall, produced many records of minimalist drone music some of which were released on Phill Niblockʼs XI label, he's played in rowdy bar bands, led the no-wavish band the Notekillers, which had a significant influence on Sonic Youth and he has even conducted a Mummerʼs String Band in various Philly parades. The Village Voice once described him as "a bizarre cross between Hendrix and La Monte Young." He's performed at most of the avant garde's hallowed halls including The Kitchen, Bang On A Can, Central Park Summerstage, The Knitting Factory, Tonic, the Deep Listening Institute, CBGBʼs as well as De Ijsbreker in Amsterdam and many festivals throughout Europe. Other projects include working with the sonification of the atmospheric phenomena known as the Schumann Resonances and human brainwaves and other esoteric projects such as The Western Enisphere, a drone and micro-pulse acoustic-electric ensemble.
On this episode, we were joined by Tara Miller and Alex Schultz of Rock Bottom String Band! We love this band's music and the folks that make that music. They're kind folks and jaw-dropping musicians to top it all off. It's almost unfair. Rock Bottom String Band plays music inspired by bluegrass, punk, country, roots, and rock at breakneck speeds with a whole lot of fun. Born in 2013 from backyard jams in the town of San Marcos, TX, we've become an internationally touring presence in the alternative Americana community. The goal of every show is to enjoy life with good times and new friends. Rock Bottom brings that energy to each performance to guarantee an engaging and immersive experience for the audience. https://www.rockbottomstringband.com/ - Website https://www.facebook.com/rockbottomstringband - Facebook https://www.instagram.com/rockbottomstringband - Instagram

What's it like to be a member of the No Man's String Band? Well, you can be kind of busy playing for one thing. When you talk to band members like fiddler Lindsey Bordner and bass player Pat Loftus, you learn that the band's essence is a combination of a commitment to quality, and enjoying the moment. Lindsay and Pat expanded on those ideas in an interview with Phil Nusbaum.

What's up everyone? We're back again with a new episode of Music in the Minor League! This week we're joined by Johnny Lawhorn of The Pentagram String Band. When we were on tour last week, we sat down with Johnny at his dining table and talked about The Pentagram String Band's new album, his path to Kansas City and a lot about pizza. It was a damn good time. Later that night, we headed over to the Brick in Kansas City to play a show with him and enjoy the interesting angle he takes on bluegrass. This is a fun one!

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts becomes the highest-paid player in NFL history. Chicago is in chaos as videos of unrest, riots, and mob attacks go viral. Tall Poppy String Band is a brand new Old Time trio featuring fiddler George Jackson, guitarist Mark Harris, and banjoist Cameron DeWhitt. Drawing from the deep well of American string band music, Tall Poppy String Band approaches tradition with playful curiosity; each performance more a discussion than a statement. Whether they're chasing the elusive downbeat of a source recording, playing with the pronouns in a bluegrass standard, or challenging the assumed roles of their instruments, Tall Poppy String Band endeavours to prove that tradition is still being written.

We're excited to bring you our first exclusive interview with The Reedy River String Band (who's composed of local music vets Sterling Waite, Rush Morgan, and Mark Dye) and offer an early listen to the first edition of their addicting new single, "Up On Blocks". It was nice catching up with Sterling and Rush, as they've been previous featured artists on the show, and was great to have Mark on as a first time guest of the show. After a fun chat with the guys from RRSB, we had the chance to sit down with Zeb Robinson (founder of Upstate Underground). We had a good chat about the hip hop music scene and recapped "The Last Party Of The Summer" concert that Zeb and The UU put on last Friday Night. We end this short episode with a quick "This Day In Music" and wrap up the show. Thank you UMMpod Nation, see you next week! We love you!!Support the show
(Lander, WY) – 1330 KOVE AM / 107.7 FM's Coffee Time host Vince Tropea recently sat down with Joe Lefevere, Stuart Cerovski, and Anne Scott, three of the members of local band The Low Water String Band. Low Water released their new EP, Wyoming Wind, back in April, and will celebrate the release as well as commemorate a decade of playing music together on May 7th at 7 PM, at the Coalter Loft in Lander. We got to chat with them about the band's history, what to expect from the EP release party, and we even go to listen to "Wyoming Wind" and "12 Cold Graves," two of the tunes from Wyoming Wind. ("12 Cold Graves" is a murder ballad based off a local historical lurid legend in Atlantic City.) Check out the full Coffee Time interview with Lefevre, Cerovski and Scott below, which begins around the 6 minute 30 second mark. Be sure to tune in to Coffee Time every morning at 9:30 AM on 1330 KOVE AM / 107.7 FM, or stream it live right here.
Ahead of their time in igniting interest in the String Band tradition, Old Crow Medicine Show was also ahead of the curve, landing in Nashville in the mid-'90s, well before it was declared the It City.
