Billy Strings has become one of the biggest drawing guitar players out on the road these days. His music brings bluegrass fans and jam band scenes together, landing him on some of the biggest stages around. Your 100 Guitarists hosts have brought in guitarist Jon Stickley to help them work out their differences—one of us is a jammer and the other … is not.Stickley goes way back with Billy, spotting his talent early in the young guitarist's career. The two have worked together since, and recently, when Billy had to dip out of his own festival as his wife headed to the hospital to deliver their baby, it was Stickley who was called to jump on stage and fill in at last minute notice. Stickley recounts the story of not only getting on stage, but strapping on Strings' guitar, plugging into his space station, and taking off with Billy's band.We called the right guitarist to guide us through, navigating Strings' work, the way he brings together influences from genres outside bluegrass, and what makes him a guitarist you need to know.Episode sponsored by Grace Design: https://gracedesign.com/Follow Jon Stickley: https://www.jonstickley.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. This Episode's Questions: Brians Questions: Hey guys, I am building an arts and crafts style entryway table that is roughly modeled after a Stickley magazine stand. It will have an upper “shelf” that is surrounded on three side by the rails or stretchers on the side and back and is open on the front. The bottom “shelf” is identical. These two shelves are seated into the four legs. The front legs have a full depth groove cut into them that the shelf seats into and the rear legs have a cutout on the inside corner for the rear shelf support. I will include a link at the bottom showing the piece that I modeled my table after. The original is smaller and has three shelves, mine will only have two and will have spindles between the rear top and bottom stretchers as well. However, the way the shelves are attached will be the same. My question is this: How can I attach the shelves to the front and rear legs without causing issues with wood movement? The shelves will be somewhere in the 13-14” deep range. Gluing the shelf to the rear legs and letting the shelf slide in the groove in the front legs would work but there is no front rail or stretcher connecting the two front legs so I don't think that works. Can I glue the shelf to all four legs? Alternatively I suppose I could put a small low profile stretcher under the shelf connecting the two front legs, but I don't think it exists on the original and I'd prefer not to if I don't have to. Please feel free to contact me to clarify anything if I didn't explain well enough. Kellen I think the thing I struggle with the most in building furniture is laying out where each part is going to come from on the rough boards. All the wood I've bought so far was air dryed from Facebook marketplace, so maybe that has made it harder since the boards are never perfectly straight. I always use straight grain sections for the legs and I try to also use straight grain for any aprons, rails and stiles. This leaves alot of waste. If I have a 8" board and I use say 2.5" from each edge of straight grain, what do you do with the leftover center section that is just cathedrals? When do you not use straight grain on these types of parts? Any other advise on laying out parts on the rough boards? Thanks again for answering my questions and the best podcast. Jeff Guys Questions: Hey Guys, I love your show! I usually listen on my commute or while I'm working in the shop. I'm building a hayrake table out of walnut and haven't decided on the finish. I'm looking for something durable, easy to wipe clean (I have kids), and not super glossy. Any suggestions on what to use and how to apply it? Thank you for all the great tips! Ezra Thank you for your fantastic podcast! I really appreciate how accessible and practical you make woodworking for both beginners and experts alike. I've been woodworking for about two years now, mostly building cutting boards, boxes, gifts and simple furniture out of basic hardwoods. I've also dabbled in making furniture with plywood, such as a bedside table for my 11-year-old. I'm fortunate to be a member of a shared woodworking shop at a local arts and crafts society, which is well-equipped with power tools including a SawStop cabinet saw. Our shop uses a shared set of well-worn Freud blades which get pretty beat up, but I've had the privilege of using nicer table saw blades loaned to me by the shop keeper, who has been incredibly supportive as I develop my skills. This brings me to my question: I am ready to purchase my own table saw blades and have zoomed in on CMT as a brand for their value. I'm considering three blades: an 80-tooth Hi-ATB crosscut, a 24-tooth flat top grind ripping blade, and a 50-tooth combination blade with ATB and one TCG tooth, all in full kerf. My research suggests that the main arguments for thin kerf blades are that they are easier on low power table saws and produce less waste. Since I have access to a SawStop cabinet saw, I don't need blades suited for low power saws, and I'm not sure the reduced waste is worth the trade-offs. Are there other advantages or reasons I should consider a thin kerf blade? It seems that full kerf blades offer more stability and cleaner cuts, and as I build my skills, my expectations for precision are increasing. What are your thoughts on kerf size and blade choice for someone in my situation? Thanks for your advice, and keep up the great work! Stuart Huys Questions: Hey gents, I'm getting into a kitchen remodel and will be building all the cabinets myself because I'm a glutton for punishment. I'm trying to find a white (tintable base) finish, but am a little overwhelmed by all the options. It for sure needs to be water based, and I have an Airless system as well as a 2-stage HVLP for application. Can you recommend any product for this purpose? I've been experimenting with Target Coatings water based pigmented lacquer (EM6500wp) with their CL100 cross-linker and was just "ok" with the results. I tried spraying it with the HVLP but I'm thinking the finish was too thick to properly atomize with a 2-stage turbine, so maybe I need to shoot it with the Airless? I'm not super keen on any finish with a real limited pot life, since I'll be doing this on the nights and weekends, and feel like that would lead to a significant amount of waste. Thanks in advance for the insight! Travis Hello guys, I have been a long time listener and I really appreciate all of the knowledge that you guys share with the woodworking community. I have seen the Critter Siphon Gun advertised in the Lee Valley catalog and watched a few videos about it on YouTube. Have you had any experience with the Critter Siphon Gun and how does it compare to other options like HVLP sprayers? Thanks, Daniel

Tread Perilously's Summer Grab Bag 2023 begins with an episode of the short-lived George Clooney series E/R called "Enter Romance." While the E/R braces for the arrival of new hospital administrator Harold Stickley, Dr. Howard Sheinfeld's first ex-wife, Sheila, comes for a visit. The topic: what to do about their teenage daughter who is currently squatting with a bunch of friends in downtown Chicago. Will Howard make good on his promise to let her stay with him? Will Sheila go along with that? And will Stickley manage to make it thirty seconds without saying something sexist or insensitive? Erik finally defeats Clooney by obtaining E/R episodes ... and also admits the series is really an Elliott Gould vehicle. Justin praises the deep cast while deriding the staid mid-1980s sitcom writing. The pair avoid making certain obvious jokes. Justin tries to offer Scrubs as the good version of E/R. Karen Black proves to be a favorite. The gravitas of Mary McDonnell ends up at odds with the "comedy." A valuable John Cleese quote leads down a Python rabbit hole. Jason Alexander's character turns out to be well-performed despite being totally loathsome. Comedy once again ends up on the hot seat and the Airport movies end up on The Full Peril challenge list.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, August 30. It's going to be sunny all week, but Tuesday will be a little cooler than days to come. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 80 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area on Tuesday. It will also be breezy, with a wind of 10 to 20 mph gusting as high as 30 mph. On Tuesday night it will be clear, with a low of around 57 degrees and a calmer wind. In an unexpected turn, a Cedar Rapids man told a judge he wanted to plead guilty Monday to robbing a cabdriver who was fatally stabbed during the crime in 2011. The plea came before trial testimony was to begin. https://www.thegazette.com/news/after-acquittal-in-death-of-cab-driver-johnathan-mitchell-indicted-in-cab-robbery/ (Johnathan Mitchell, 44,) started talking to his lawyer, Chad Frese, near the end of the jury instructions on Monday. Frese requested a sidebar — a private discussion with lawyers and U.S. District Chief Judge Leonard Strand. Strand excused the jury for a break, and Frese said Mitchell wanted to plead guilty to robbery affecting commerce, as charged. He said Mitchell, who has been found incompetent off and on since 2016, was competent and he had actively helped in his defense during preparation for this trial. This case has been pending for six years, mostly due to https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/man-charged-in-2011-killing-and-robbery-of-cedar-rapids-cabdriver-is-appealing-court-order-to-give-h/ (Mitchell being found incompetent) when he refused to take antipsychotic medications prescribed by prison doctors. On Monday, Mitchell admitted he robbed Catherine Ann Boyle Stickley, 54, of Cedar Rapids, on April 29, 2011. He also admitted to taking cash, a purse and money bag from her during the robbery. Mitchell didn't admit to stabbing Stickley 18 times, as a medical examiner determined. The fact that Stickley died as a result of the robbery will be a sentencing issue and could impact the sentencing guideline for Mitchell, who faces up to 20 years in federal prison, Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Reinert said after the plea hearing. Iowa organizations encouraging alternatives to abortion may see increased demand for their services if abortion laws change. However, the $500,000 in state funding the Legislature allocated to expand these services is not yet available and new abortion restrictions may come first. The Legislature passed the “More Options for Maternal Support” (MOMS) program https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ga=89&ba=HF2578 (into law) earlier this year, appropriating $500,000 toward funding nonprofit organizations that encourage alternatives to abortion. These organizations, often called pregnancy centers, provide services such as pregnancy and adoption counseling for expecting and new parents. Program funds have not been distributed yet. Alex Carfrae, a public information officer with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, said the goal was to have services in place before the start of the next fiscal year. The next fiscal year starts July 1, 2023. Abortion still is legal in Iowa, but the U.S. and state supreme courts decided this summer that the medical procedure is not protected under the federal or state constitution. These decisions opened the doors for legislation and court challenges seeking to restrict abortion in the state. As it stands, abortions are banned in Iowa after 20 weeks of pregnancy, except in cases where the mother's life is at risk. Gov. Kim Reynolds is hoping to bring that timeframe down to six weeks. Earlier this month, the governor's attorneys https://iowacapitaldispatch.com/2022/08/11/reynolds-asks-court-to-lift-injunction-against-iowas-fetal-heartbeat-law/?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=1bbbd8b9-f717-4115-b35f-6b299a019cb5 (filed a court brief) asking an Iowa judge to lift an injunction blocking enforcement of the so-called fetal...

Brandt Stickley is an Assistant Professor in the College of Classical Chinese Medicine, National University of Natural Medicine, and a Visiting Professor at Dragon Rises College of Oriental Medicine, Pacific Rim College, Five Branches University, Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences, Yo San University and Maryland University of Integrative Health. As a Senior Instructor and Board member of Dragon Rises Seminars he teaches Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis. Brandt is a graduate of Cornell University and the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He has worked closely with Dr. Leon Hammer for 20 years, and is considered an authority on the model of Chinese medical Psychology developed by Dr. Hammer. In his own development of this school of thought, he has relentlessly pursued a synthesis of Classical Han and Tang Dynasty herbal medicine and acupuncture, Chinese magical medicine, philosophy and religion, with concepts of psychosomatic medicine, body-oriented psychology, neuro-phenomenology, process-oriented philosophy, imaginal, integral, and consciousness studies. He brings all of these disciplines to play in striving to intend the impossible as a clinician, teacher, writer and speaker. In theory and in practice, Brandt's work seeks to establish Classical Chinese medicine as a vital psychosomatic and physiosemiotic current in the evolution of consciousness and the alleviation of suffering. I first met Jon Stickley in 2004 in North Carolina, two days before we were set to record with Andy Thorn (Leftover Salmon), Anders Beck (Greensky Bluegrass), and Robin Davis. The band was Broke Mountain and the rest is still unfolding, but needless to say that was a seminal point in all of our lives and careers. Jon is one of my best friends and favorite musicians and one of the reasons I moved to Western North Carolina. Playing with him is always a joy and that was the topic of conversation on The Happy Hour that evening in July of 2020. In Episode 23, The Live from Banjo Podcast hit the road and headed to Lafayette, GA. With heavy rains just coming to an end and the crowd in full party mode, ready for a series of incredibly acts to take the stage, Jon Stickley and I sat down for a live recording at Forward Festival in May of 2021.Jon is the guitarist and frontman for Jon Stickley Trio. Jon and I discuss his life as a punk rock drummer, his introduction to bluegrass and the mandolin by his best friend, Leftover Salmon banjo player Andy Thorn. We discuss the many bands, instruments, and inspirational musicians that help cultivate Jon's unique songwriting and playing. We walk through Jon's childhood, marriage, and newly acquired fatherhood. We also take a look at the serendipitous series of events, including a pandemic, that allowed Jon, a nearly non-stop touring musician, to take a year and a half off to be with his wife. Jon remained home for Julianne's entire pregnancy, and Jon was also home to welcome his son Callum into the world. It has now been seven months since his son was born, and Jon is finally hitting the road.He discusses his plans to navigate getting back on the road, with the extreme changes to his life over the past year. In this week's wrap-up, Crystal and I discuss legendary guitarists Doc Watson and Tony Rice. We look at the history of legendary indie-punk record labels Lookout Records and Fat Wreck Chords. Crystal discusses her distaste for Green Day's “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life), and I give a little background on Durham's own. Merge Records. Crystal and I also look forward to our retirement plan as honorary park rangers, utilizing my bear-fighting cyborg appendages. Walter, per usual, likes to make himself known to the listeners. I hope you enjoy this week's chat with Mr. Jon Stickley.

Episode 25 is upon us and have we got a fun one for you! As discussed in a previous episode, Spook Shows are an almost forgotten form of entertainment where people would go to a movie theater after the films for the day were shown (usually at midnight). A magician would perform amazing magic tricks as well as a seance; monsters would come out of the movie screen and kidnap girls in the audience; a blackout would occur in which ghosts and other apparitions would fly all around the theater and much, much more! Spook Shows were wildly popular from the 1930s until the mid-70s, and many thought they were gone and forgotten. Well, they're not! Joining us in this episode is Keith Stickley, the man behind Dr. Scream's Spook Show Revival. Keith has fashioned a Spook Show for modern audiences and is helping to keep this form of entertainment alive! We had a fun conversation that covered the history and pioneers of Spook Shows, as well as what goes on in Dr. Scream's shows and more! So join us for this episode so you can learn all about this almost forgotten type of unique, and fun, entertainment! Pictures from Dr Scream's Spook Show will be in the posting for this episode on our website. Dr. Scream's Spook Show Revival can be found at https://www.facebook.com/SpookShowRevival. As always, please leave us a great review at iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, or wherever you download your podcasts, so others can find the show! Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.07.24.219246v1?rss=1 Authors: Miozzo, F., Stickley, L., Tas, D., Loncle, N., Nikonenko, I., Dorcikova, M., Valencia-Alarcon, E. P., Bou Dib, P., Nagoshi, E. Abstract: The degeneration of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra is a hallmark of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Dysregulation of developmental transcription factors is implicated in dopaminergic neurodegeneration, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. Drosophila Fer2 is a prime example of a developmental transcription factor required for the birth and maintenance of midbrain DA neurons. Using an approach combining ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, and genetic epistasis experiments with PD-linked genes, here we demonstrate that Fer2 controls a transcriptional network to maintain mitochondrial structure and function, and thus confers dopaminergic neuroprotection against genetic and oxidative insults. We further show that conditional ablation of Nato3, a mouse homolog of Fer2, in differentiated DA neurons results in locomotor impairments and mitochondrial abnormality in aged mice. Our results reveal the essential and conserved role of Fer2 homologs in the mitochondrial maintenance of midbrain DA neurons, opening new perspectives for modelling and treating PD. Greetings, mutants! During the Texts and Traditions colloquium in Seattle, WA, I stole away with John Anderson (author) and Brandt Stickley (foreword) to talk about The Way of the Living Ghost. About the book: "This enigmatic work by Dr Anderson combs through the Daodejing, line by line, in new translation giving robust commentary to the dark side of the Dao." It’s something like a book written by a hungry ghost, about how we, the living, are already hungry ghosts too. Forgive the sound quality... The microphone, alas, did not pick us up too well without some post-production audio boosting. Then there was the fridge turning on, midway. Hence, the kitchen sessions. Appropriate for hungry ghosts. If you can mind the sound, tune in with earphones and listen to what both John and Brandt have to say. It’s worth it! More Revelore recordings are on the way. Plus, these two fellows are contributors to the forthcoming anthology Mutations: Art, Consciousness and the Anthropocene. Grab the way of the Living Ghost on Amazon, or Revelore Press. It is also available in deluxe edition (check my instagram in a few weeks for snazzy pictures). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mutations/message

Perceiving and sensing are not the same. It might seem that the stream of information coming in through our senses arrives passively. But further investigation proves this incorrect. And in fact our perceiving not only is an active process, but can become richer, deeper, more nuanced and integrated when we actively bring our attention to help us sense more deeply into our work and interaction with others. In this conversation we explore how sensing and esthetics help us to better connect with our patients and ourselves. How perception moves through the six levels. And how non-dual states of awareness change what is an “effective action” with our patients. Head on over to the show notes page for more information about this episode and for links to the resources discussed in the interview.
It was Jon’s love of a variety of music that inspired him to play, and to reinvent Americana, by combining conventional bluegrass with groove-oriented alternative and punk. Not content with inventing a new genre, his trio consists of himself on guitar, a violin player, and a drummer - also something you never see in bluegrass Jon’s released 4 trio and 2 solo records and he shares a great lesson he learned about releasing albums… how his audience has changed over time (playing over 150+ shows a year)... a very important piece of advice for any musician or for anyone who’s self-employed, for that matter… Nirvana, RHCP, being kind and knowing when not to, and much more. He would meet Andy “Crawdad” Thorn (Larry Keel Experience, Leftover Salmon) in high school, and when Thorn gave Jon some Bela Fleck and David Grisman cds, Jon’s life was forever changed. Even while playing in punk bands and his own indie rock band (an experience that would ultimately be key in his songwriting development), Jon would become a fervent fan and student of bluegrass and the mandolin. While an opportunity to be an assistant park ranger in Alaska did not allow him to accept Anders Beck’s (Greensky Bluegrass) initial invitation for him to join Broke Mountain, he would eventually join them on guitar. He also revisited the mandolin to tour with North Carolina bands the Biscuit Burners and Town Mountain. However a fellow musician noticed his strong love of the guitar and encouraged Jon to focus on that. Jon agreed and would in turn decide to start his own band. Around this same time Billy Gilmore (Grass Is Dead) introduced Jon to Lyndsay Pruitt. Pruitt had toured with Black Mozart Ensemble, a side project of Flecktones drummer, “Futureman.” Pruitt would join Jon’s trio, and her playing quickly became an immediate influence on Jon’s songwriting. We also learn about the unusual residency their new drummer Hunter “JamChops” Deacon experienced. The band not only does more “off the map” improvisation since Deacon joined, but some of these improvisations have also become seeds for future compositions. During the closing segment, Seth and Rob share some of their experiences at this year’s Electric Forest festival and we are treated to two songs from the Jon Stickley Trio cd, Maybe Believe. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com All social media management, promotion and website maintenance/building done by Harris Sullivan. wTnS is a proud partner of the Osiris Podcast Network. Jon Stickley is a Durham native, (you may know his brother Jeff as the drummer for Hammer No More The Fingers) but in recent years he's called Asheville home. Stickley was one of the founders of Big Fat Gap, a North Carolina bluegrass institution, and has since gone on to perform alongside roots music icons like Larry Keel, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams and more. After all of his band-based endeavors, Stickley settled into the solo digs and found himself two stunningly talented musicians. Lyndsay Pruett is on fiddle, bringing her classically trained skills to the forefront by adding in hints of Latin and Jazz influence while drummer Patrick Armitage pulls in subtle hip-hop influence to make for a well-rounded and unique take on this typified genre. Pruett and Armitage have worked with Futureman and hip-hop group Atmosphere respectively, so their back catalog provides a wonderful glimpse into the work they produce. The trio came in for some live performances and interviews on Carolina Grown this past Friday before their set at the NC Roots Showcase at Tir Na Nog. The band discussed their origins, influences and forthcoming album throughout the segment, but most importantly they laid down some seriously stunning tunes.

This week Luke goads the mafia and the boys discuss, amongst other things, Easter, Stalinist theme bars, Phil Spector, their own modest success in the PodOmatic charts.
Episode #1. Joel Stickley & Luke Wright, the writers behind the critically acclaimed Who Writes This Crap? and Aisle16's Poetry Boyband, practice being spontaneous on this weekly podcast.
