Today we hear of a unique journey of former soccer player, Jonathan Moreno, who played at a very high level at a very young age, down in South America. If you are unfamiliar with the culture and the impact soccer has on the people of South America, then today is one you will want to pay close attention to. Through Jonathan's story, you'll learn of the ups and downs of competing and what it was like for a young man to play at that level and have to leave his home to play ball. There were many amazing opportunities for him that came through this sport, and you'll even hear about the transition from South America to the United States when he moved here as a teenager. What were the differences between the competition down there compared to that of here in the US? What did he learn from his experience? When it comes to emerging psychedelic therapies, how did we get here and where we are going? In this episode, we dive into the historical context of neuroscience and ethical implications of psychedelic experimentation, in conversation with author and bioethicist Jonathan Moreno. Jonathan Moreno grew up on the frontier of psychotherapy. The first 20 years of his life were spent as the center of a “laboratory of ideas” surrounded by psychiatric patients and psychotherapists at his parent's institute. His fascination with studying consciousness in treatment began there and took him on the journey to receiving his Ph.D. in philosophy, studying bioethics and military experiments, and eventually psychedelics. You will learn about the unlikely interaction of psychedelics and national security, as well as how the historical context of human military experiments contributes to our current understanding of consciousness. Just press play. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/finding-founders/support

Advances in biology have revolutionized modern medicine, but they have also spurred many ethical and political issues. On this program, Prof. Jonathan Moreno discussed the politics of biology.
Host: Chris Mooney Human cloning. Synthetic biology. Mood (and mind) altering drugs. Personalized medicine. Such topics are rarely at the top of the political agenda. Yet the changes they're causing, often below the radar, are monumental. Issues of personhood, identity, ethics, are at play. The human future may be very different from the human past as these changes are negotiated and assimilated. And so may human politics. To help us prepare for this radical future is Jonathan Moreno, author of the new book The Body Politic: The Battle Over Science in America, which underscores the strange bedfellow allegiances that may occur in what has been called our "biological century." Jonathan Moreno is a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is one of 13 Penn Integrates Knowledge university professors. He is a historian, medical ethicist, and philosopher, and was part of Barack Obama's transition team.

Jonathan Moreno, nationally distinguished bioethicist, discusses the connections between national security and brain research and argues that there is a need to contemplate the ethical, political and social implications of these advances.
