'Will Multinational American Corporations Become Less Multinational?' The US political and economic policy-making environment has changed dramatically in 2025, with a shift against globalisation among the most potentially impactful changes being executed by the current administration. US multinational corporations are reassessing their global operations in the light of tariffs, pressure from the US government to invest more at home, invest less abroad, and reshore production and jobs from other countries. To discuss how corporate America is responding to this changed environment, IIEA Insights is joined by Mike Beary, formerly of Amazon in the US and Amazon Web Services in Ireland; Courtney Fingar, Founder of Fingar Direct Investment; Joseph Quinlan, Co-Author of AmCham's annual ‘Transatlantic Economy' report; and Anna Scally, International Tax Partner at KPMG Ireland. About the speakers: Mike Beary is currently Chair of the Governing Authority of University College Dublin. Previously, he joined Amazon in Seattle in 2012 as part of the marketplace leadership team. He subsequently served as Country Manager Ireland for Amazon Web Services and as the company's HR Director for Europe, Middle East & Africa. Courtney Fingar founder of Fingar Direct Investment after a career engaged in FDI issues. Her previous roles include Editor in Chief of both Investment Monitor and fDi Intelligence, Senior Advisor at The World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies, and Content Editor for FT Live. Joseph Quinlan is Senior Fellow with the Transatlantic Leadership Network and has a long and ongoing leadership role in the financial services industry in New York. Anna Scally is an International Tax Partner at KPMG Ireland where she is Sector Leader on the Technology, Media and Telecoms (TMT) Industries.

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 23, 2024 4:18

Planul fiscal apărut în spațiul public are multe necunoscute.

This Democracy that Delivers episode delves into the complexities of the investment landscape in Argentina. Lesly Rubio, Senior Program Manager of CIPE's Latin American Programs, is joined by the Center for the Implementation of Public Policies Promoting Equity and Growth (CIPPEC) Senior Program Manager, Demian Gonzalez, and the American Chamber (AmCham) in Argentina Public Affairs Director, Marina Senestro to discuss Argentina's recent and ongoing economic transformations.  The podcast examines Argentina's decades of political and economic fluctuations, and its current volatile financial crisis. As we speak, Argentina is now striving to attract foreign investment through a new set of reforms. There is no question that the arrival of a new national administration has represented a breaking point in Argentina since President Javier Milei has expressed his commitment to market-oriented solutions to tackle economic challenges.  Drawing upon CIPPEC's experience in Argentina, Mr. Gonzalez shares that the Omnibus legislation (or “Ley de Bases”) highlights Argentina's great potential for greater economic growth through foreign direct investment (FDI) and increased international trade. Based on AmCham's expertise on investment in Argentina, Ms. Senestro explains the importance of transparency, partnerships, and regulations to maximize the investment in critical economic sectors, ultimately promoting national development and safeguarding investments.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas -  The national president of the American Chamber Mexico says RioPlex will become one of the most powerful regions economically in the world. Carlos Garcia, who is based in Mexico City, spoke at an evening reception AmCham hosted at IBC Bank in Brownsville. He said he had not been to the Rio Grande Valley for several years. He said he was “blown away” but what he saw. “It's been a real, real pleasure being here. It's been, I think, six or seven years since I've been to the RioPlex area - we've got to start getting used to using that brand. And it's amazing. It's amazing what's happening,” Garcia said. “We had the good fortune of touring SpaceX this morning, early, and I was blown away. There are a couple engineers back there, fellow Michigan Wolverines, who are amazing. I feel like SpaceX is changing the world and space and outer space, and with the port, everything that's happening at the port, it's great to be a part of it.” Garcia and other members of AmCham had toured the Port of Brownsville and SpaceX in the morning. In the afternoon the chamber held a private, by invitation only, gathering at the Brownsville Events Center. The event was titled US-Mexico Leaders' Summit: Binational High-Level Dialogue. Among those giving the opening remarks were Brownsville Mayor John Cowen and Roberto Velasco from Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among the guest speakers were Adriana Cruz, executive director of economic development and tourism for Gov. Greg Abbott's Office, Glenn Hamer, president and CEO of the Texas Association of Business, U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, and state Sen. Morgan LaMantia. “We're very excited at AmCham to join forces with Joaquin and RioPlex to really promote bilateral trade. Well, trilateral trade with Canada as well,” Garcia said, at the evening reception. The “Joaquin” Garcia was referring to was Joaquin Spamer, a member of the board for AmCham's northeast chapter in Monterrey. “As I mentioned earlier this morning, I'm convinced that working together, we're going to solve our same challenges. And this region is going to be the most powerful economic region in the world,” Garcia said. Earlier, Garcia had listened to a presentation on RioPlex from Hidalgo County Prosperity Task Force leader Mario Reyna. Reyna had pointed out that RioPlex is a marketing effort to attract more businesses and high-paying jobs to the region. He said the campaign came about through discussions on how to tackle poverty in the county. Garcia said Mexico, too, suffers from poverty. “I think it's amazing what you guys are doing with RioPlex. because one of the things in Mexico we've struggled with is economic prosperity across the board. In Mexico, we still have 40-something percent of the population living in poverty. I think that's a crime, and we need to work on that,” Garcia said. “And so, we share that vision. And it's a vision that we really have to share across North America. So, I applaud you. Thank you again for wonderful day, and for this unbelievable event.” Another speaker at the reception was Lorenzo Barrera, president of the American Chamber Mexico northeast chapter in Monterrey. Editor's Note: Here is an audio recording of the remarks given by Garcia, Barrera, and Spamer at the AmCham reception.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

PHARR, Texas - The RioPlex region should otherwise be known as the Land of the Incredible, says businessman Joaquin Spamer. The Rio Grande Guardian caught up with the founder and president of CIL Logistics at the official opening of the Pharr Global Business Hub. In an exclusive interview, Spamer talked about Pharr's prominence as an international trade corridor, the impact SpaceX will have on the regional economy, and the importance of the American Chamber Mexico, otherwise known as AmCham. Spamer helped AmCham host a summit at the Brownsville Events Center the day before the opening of the Pharr Global Business Hub. It was titled the US-Mexico Leaders' Summit: Binational High-Level Dialogue. “AmCham is 106 years old and it's a very well organized, very professional entrepreneurial organization in Mexico,” Spamer said. “I'm just proud that they accepted me a couple of years back as a member, and I was invited to become a board member in the Northeast chapter in Monterrey last year.” Spamer said he “wanted to do something” for AmCham in South Texas. “I think that the last two days were something spectacular. AmCham is very powerful. We got some very big names (to come to the summit). Adriana Cruz (head of economic development in Gov. Greg Abbott's Office) came to the event. A lot of different local businessmen, local mayors (came also). We are very grateful that Senator LaMantia was there, (and Congressman) Vicente Gonzalez. He's a very good friend of mine, a very good friend of business. And we had a great event.” Spamer said the RioPlex region, which encompasses the Rio Grande Valley and North Tamaulipas, needs to do more to attract the major companies in AmCham. “That's what we need to promote, we need those kinds of investors. All of the members of AmCham are investors. They are big companies. A lot of them came to this event. They were like close to 20, and they all were very impressed about what we're doing with RioPlex. What the Valley is doing, what North Tamaulipas is doing, and I could not be more proud,” Spamer said. “We have to showcase our region. Now quote me on this - it is the Land of the Incredible. RioPlex is the Land of Incredible. It's incredible what we have accomplished here in the past 30 years, and, again, it's going to be incredible what we're going to accomplish in the next 30 years. So, hold on. Grab your seatbelts.” In his remarks at the Pharr EDC event, Spamer spoke about the incredible change that has taken place in the Valley over the last 30 years. He said the region has changed from predominantly agrarian to being home to one of the most technologically advanced companies in the world. He was referring to SpaceX. “We have a logistics location here in the Valley. Of course, Pharr is the most important bridge in RioPlex. It is handling a lot of merchandise that comes through Mexico. Brownsville has a good port of entry as well, the same as Donna and Roma,” Spamer said in his interview with the Guardian. “But now we have another logistics operation that is going to the outer space. So (Captain) Kirk (of Star Trek) get ready, because we're going to go to outer space. This is unique. It's beautiful. I went there (to SpaceX) yesterday. It's impressive.” Spamer said the RioPlex region needs to tell its story to the world. “That is what we need, to tell the world that we are the port of the future. RioPlex is the home of (SapceX's) Starbase. This is this is huge.” Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story. Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - RioPlex, the new regional marketing campaign set up to promote the Rio Grande Valley and Northern Tamaulipas, is going to be housed within the Council for South Texas Economic Progress. The announcement was made by Mario Reyna at a reception held by the American Chamber Mexico (AmCham) and held Wednesday evening at IBC Bank in Brownsville. Reyna is a co-founder of the Hidalgo County Prosperity Task Force, which has since expanded to include the entire Valley. One of the 15 committees set up by the task force is the CEO Group. The CEO Group, which comprises over 40 business leaders from both sides of the border, is led by CIL President Joaquin Spamer. It was the CEO Group that proposed the RioPlex marketing campaign. “Adam is not here, but Rick is here. So, RioPlex is going to be housed in COSTEP, and they're going to have the brand within their organization,” Reyna said, in remarks made at the AmCham reception. “We're going to do all that we can to get the money that we need to promote RioPlex.” The “Adam” Reyna referred to is Adam Gonzalez, CEO of COSTEP. The “Rick” Reyna referred to is Rick Carrera, economic development director of COSTEP. Reyna said there are still a few of things that still need to be done before RioPlex is officially launched. “We have a request for information right now. We're looking for a marketing company that can give us a suggestion on how to promote RioPlex. Once we know that we're going to obviously start doing everything else.” Editor's Note: To read the full story go to the Rio Grande Guardian website.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

Access to social media has really democratised salespeople's ability to sell themselves to a broader audience.  Once upon a time, we were reliant on the efforts of the marketing team to get the message out and, in rare cases, the PR team to promote us.  Neither group saw it as their job to help us as a salesperson, and they were more concentrated on the brand.  Today we have the world at our beck and call through social media. We can promote ourselves through our intellectual property.  We can post blogs on areas of our expertise.  We can do video and upload that to YouTube, one of the biggest and most powerful search engines.  There are so many paths to the mountaintop, and they are all free.  Of course, the platforms are looking for money and so they shaft us and only show our stuff to a minute section of our followers, but the price is right. I was making this point in a recent speech to the American Chamber here in Tokyo, which you can see on YouTube.  One question following my recommendation to salespeople to get out there and promote theirexpertise and experience, was “what about the haters?”.  It is a good point and if you are delicate and sensitive, then social media could be a bruising encounter for you and your content.  Or like me, you can just ignore it and work on the basis that people who get it know you are an expert, because they consume your content and they will ignore the haters as well. Let me provide a real life case study for you. I was recently involved in a thread on LinkedIn responding to a post by the author about promoting your credentials when speaking in Japan, otherwise the audience won't trust what you say.  I didn't agree with the way this was characterised by the author and so added my “expert” comment.  Most people just ignored what I was saying, because they had what they wanted to say as their main interest and fair enough.  One person though said, “master trainer and executive coach coming in to bash an entire 125 million people country as non-professional in a single comment and blatantly disregard any suggestion on how to customize the message to appeal to a specific audience. Excellent communication strategy! So what would you do with this type of criticism?  We can ignore it, as I suggested during my AmCham speech, or we can choose to expose it.  On this occasion, I decided to expose it.  This was my reply, “tell us your experience and share your insights. I am relating mine based on my experience here since 1979 and over 550 public speeches in Japan. Your comment doesn't match with what I am suggesting from what I can see. What do you suggest that is diametrically opposed to what I am saying? I have published 373 blogs on LinkedIn on presenting in Japan and the same number of recordings for my podcast The Japan Presentations Series and published my book Japan Presentations Mastery as well as teaching the High Impact Presentations course. How about you - tell us what you have done?”. As you see, I am heaping on my own credibility in my reply and asking the critic to pony up and tell us their credentials.  I chose this route for a simple reason. I have a very high profile here because I have published 7 books, including three best sellers, and release six audio podcasts and three video podcasts a week. I also pump out four additional videos a day through LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram and Threads.  You may not have this type of onslaught happening and can simply ignore the irritation.  I didn't plan it this way, but I also drown out any critics, because of the constant flow of content I keep posting every day.  Their previous negative posting gets pushed down the fold in the screen and just disappears.  It remains high in their postings on their page, but is crushed by my new posts on my page and is soon forgotten. In my reply, I made a special point of not criticising the person making the negative comment, but challenged them to put up and tell us what they would recommend.  This reply comes across as reasonable and not getting bogged down in the mud and the blood of personal recriminations. Never go there, because this is our public profile and we have to maintain our professional decorum. Will I keep going in my responses, if they keep adding criticisms?  Probably not.  They have been challenged to show what they know. If they go the personal attack route, it is better to stand above the riffraff and ignore their salvos.  People reading the thread will see they have got no experience or expertise and will discount what they say as mere opinion. As salespeople, we should use social media etc., to get our expertise out there for potential buyers to find us and to assure potential buyers we meet, that we are the real deal.  Today, buyers will search us out before they meet us to better understand who they are dealing with.  Now, if they searched on you, what will they find?  In my case, everything is business.  I chose to not to mix business with personal on social media. I want to present myself as an expert in leadership, sales, communications and presentations because as a training company, that is what we provide to our clients.  It is always congruent. I don't stray from those areas because I am conscious I have a limit to my time and my expertise.  I try to control what the potential buyer sees from me.  In this way, I can control my personal and professional brand.

"We felt that it was important to remind people why we're doing this in the first place, you know, what's good about our relationship with China. We wanted bring the commercial issues back into the conversation."13:31 -- On the current idea of “uncoupling” or “de-risking” the US economy from China."I think it is good to talk about 'de-risking' rather than 'decoupling'." "I don't think a complete decoupling is realistic and it's certainly not in the interest of either side. But I think the de-risking term is helpful, in the sense that it aims at communicating the intent. {The intent] here is not to punish China or isolate China or decouple from China, but it is to protect our interests, whether they're military interests or strategic economic interests."16:46 -- On whether the US policies and sanctions towards China are effective."The narrative is that the export controls and sanctions and de-risking coming out of Washington DC is simply pushing China to be more self-sufficient." "This has to be seen as a temporary measure, that gives us time to resolve the actual conflicts that exist."21:21 -- On the US responding with its own industrial policy to catch up with China (e.g. in batteries and EVs). "We've got to be careful not to slip into outright protectionism and allow this to change who we are as a country and how we've been successful as an economy." "[I]f we get into a situation where we are indeed trying to limit China's economic rise, and literally keep China economically contained, that is a dangerous path, and it's a bad narrative, because it inevitably leads to conflict.""I'm basically conservative when it comes to economic issues and fiscal policy, but I have actually been saying for quite a long time that the US needs to get over its aversion to industrial policy and put some planning in place."30:38 -- On China's private sector."[B]eijing actually kept a remarkably light hand [in the development of the internet industry]. I give the Beijing policymakers full credit there for knowing that they needed to stay out of the way and let that happen." "Now we've seen the pendulum swing back the other way." "Jack Ma was going around visiting countries and he would almost be treated like a head of state. I think Jack Ma must have, because his company is publicly listed in New York, he might have confused himself with a Western CEO. He's not. China is China and the West is the West, especially in the tech sector. So yeah, he's been disciplined as have some other tech leaders."36:21 -- On the fate of TikTok in the US.40:38 -- On the recent APEC meeting in SF, and his take on Presidents Biden and Xi Jinping meetings. "I put it in the category of huge success that the meeting happened, that Xi Jinping actually showed up." "It's critical that Xi and Biden meet face-to-face because of the Chinese political system, it is so concentrated at the top."46:09 -- On the risks of a military conflict between the U.S. and China over Taiwan. "We should not underestimate [China's] willingness to take the island and take it by force. I think at some point you have to just take them at their word. If you listen to the domestic media and domestic speeches that Xi and others make in China, it's quite clear that they're highly motivated to take the island and willing to." "[But] I don't think it's imminent, mostly because of the difficulty of taking the island and of the probability of success on the Chinese side.""I think the probability of an accidental conflict [is] high. And until the agreement of the last week or so, the ability to de-escalate and de-conflict, low." "In other words, without that military-to-military hotline, there would be no way for it to de-escalate."50:35 -- How should boards think about de-risking its China exposure."They should be thinking about what are the hard assets that they have, both in mainland China and in Taiwan? What I'm hearing boards do is that some of them are converting their businesses to more asset light. So, in other words, converting a wholly owned subsidiary to maybe selling off some of the shares to make that into a minority investment or a full asset light model might be literally selling factories and hard assets and then maybe licensing them back or something like that to where they wouldn't have to literally write them off the way many companies had to do in Russia when that took place, and you saw large companies writing off literally billions of dollars of assets off their balance sheets because they could no longer have access to them.""Again, I don't think that we are on the brink here, but it would be wise to have plans in place in the case of, especially in accidental conflict."52:27 -- Books that have greatly influenced his life: Free to Choose by Milton Friedman (1980)All books by James Clavell.
