There are SO many parts of Sophie's story that I want to emphasise. Like how depression made Sophie feel so numb that she didn't know what to say when a nurse asked her if she loved her daughter. Or like how intrusive thoughts made her feel so scared that she didn't want to go near her baby. Or like how the symptoms of psychosis made her feel so confused that her husband had to write her detailed instructions to be able to shower. Or like how she panicked, instead of celebrated, when her ‘involuntary' label was lifted in the MBU. Or, or, or… you see what I mean?! Among the MANY topics we cover in this heartfelt episode, Sophie and I discuss: how sleep and feeding challenges can become a fixation the ‘stickiness' of intrusive thoughts how self-doubt affects our mental health and parenting small acts of kindness that aren't small at all how the difficult decision to undertake TMS was Sophie's turning point …and so much more! With some tears and laughs along the way, Sophie shares with me the long road to get to where she is now: a PANDA Community Champion, a facilitator of the Circle of Security program, the heart and soul behind AttachED, and most of all, pregnant and ready to welcome baby number two. I could say so much more, but just listen to this episode - trust me, you won't regret it. Send Me a Message! In this episode of 'The Dysregulated Podcast' I take an in depth look at the problems plaguing the NSW public mental health system. Over 200 psychiatrists in the public system have indicated their intention of resigning from NSW Health. This is a disastrous outcome for the people of NSW. Although pay is at the heart of this battle, it isn't necessarily about money. This is about funding a failing system and attracting enough mental health professionals to ensure the NSW mental health system can provide for those that desperately need it.--Follow my journey living with mental illness and the hard-fought lessons learned along the way. Lived experience is the driving force of this podcast, and through this lens, my stories are told. This is a raw, honest, and authentic account of how multiple psychological disorders have shaped my past and continue to influence my future.Support the showTo support the show, CLICK HEREYou can follow me on Instagram: @elliot.t.waters

It's hoped an abandoned 16-acre site in the heart of Ennis can be a silver bullet for the county town's housing woes, after being acquired by new owners. Clare County Council has confirmed that the grounds and property of the former Our Lady's Hospital on the Gort Road have changed hands once again. The former Psychiatric Hospital first opened as an Asylum in 1868 and closed in 2002 and has remained derelict since, however a third party is now understood to be in discussions with the local authority regarding a potential development. Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle believes it's an ideal location for affordable homes.

The Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital, a public hospital in New Jersey operated for 67 years providing long-term treatment for adults and children, has been riddled with allegations of abuse, neglect and hospital escapees. The hospital was demolished in 2015, but to this day, some say the land the hospital once sat on remains haunted and legend of a murderous farmer occupying the slaughterhouse is still told among those who visit. The Division of Historic Preservation recently led an archaeological dig to determine if the assumed location of the former Vermont State Hospital Cemetery was accurate.
For over a year, Ariane hid the true severity of her symptoms and tried so hard to portray a choreographed image of the good, responsive mother who kept it all together. Motherhood was the performance of her life… until it wasn't. The stage makeup and sparkles fell away when her symptoms escalated and she had to be admitted to a general psychiatric hospital. Ariane had to finally step out of the spotlight and allow her psychiatrist to take the lead, but this is when she was able to recover. In this episode we discuss all the facets of Ariane's recovery: medication, diagnosis, psychodynamic therapy with her psychiatrist, a hospital admission, art therapy, dancing, embracing the mundanity of recovery, and finding purpose through writing, advocating via the Centre of Perinatal Excellence (COPE), teaching ballet, and publishing her new novel, Because I'm Not Myself, You See. Part story, part book review, part in-depth discussion about the current state of perinatal mental health and advocacy, and part amused ramblings from two MBU graduates, this is part two of Ariane's story. Buckle up, it's going to be quite the ride. GIVEAWAY Congratulations to the winners who scored one of FIVE copies of Ariane's new book 'Because I'm Not Myself, You See: A Memoir of Motherhood, Madness, and Coming Back From the Brink' thanks to the generosity of our friends at Black Inc. Everyday we see so many individuals struggling with their mental health disorder, to the point of homelessness, and I can't help but ask, if they were able to get the help that they needed, would they have ended up there? This episode is a call to action, for all of us, all over the world, to show compassion to others but, just as important, to show compassion to OURSELVES. We need to make sure we are getting the help WE deserve as well, and sometimes, we can only do this by seeking help. I'm here to try and debunk myths about being in psychiatric hold, because unlike the movies, it was actually very helpfulIf you or anyone you know would like to guest on the show, follow us on instagram @breakingdownthebreakdownpod or email me at breakingdownthebreakdown@outlook.comSupport the Show.Email me at breakingdownthebreakdown@outlook.comor you can find me on instagram at @breakingdownthebreakdownpod
Creepypasta Scary Story
After a blissful experience with her first son, it never occurred to Jess that a subsequent pregnancy and postpartum could be any different - until she found out she was pregnant with twins. From real and perceived health complications, Jess's mental health rapidly declined with every intrusive thought and compulsion that took over her life. The increased caretaking demands of parenting multiples and a toddler only compounded the feeling that she wasn't enough for her children. Despite being cared for by the local acute mental health team, Jess started to experience hallucinations and psychosis. This is one mother's heart-wrenching story that epitomises the painful realities of experiencing a perinatal mental illness: of your children being both your motivation to get better and your trigger; of wanting to keep your children safe but feeling unsafe in your own body and mind; and of wanting the best for your children but feeling like they're better off without you. This is Jess's story. And it isn't a story to miss. EPISODE SPONSOR This episode is proudly brought to you by Tommee Tippee Australia. As a midwife with zero history of mental ill health, Caitlin didn't expect to develop severe postpartum depression and anxiety at all, let alone after the birth of her second child. She certainly didn't expect to be wheeled through the same hospital where she worked down to the psychiatric ward for an eight-week admission. And of course she never expected that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) would be part of her story to treat her treatment-resistant depression. In this poignant episode, Caitlin takes us on her unexpected journey of experiencing mental ill health for the first time in motherhood, of navigating the unfamiliar mental health system to receive the right diagnosis and treatment, and of confronting nearly every taboo of mental health along the way. Finally, Caitlin recalls the special moment when she ‘saw the light', when she no longer felt worthless, and when she felt a glimmer of hope again - which, after everything she went through, was something she never truly expected to feel again. This isn't an episode to miss. You can connect with Caitlin on Instagram at beneaththepalms_midwifery where she draws on her own experiences to advocate for her pregnant and postpartum patients in Cairns, Queensland. Please note, this episode discusses suicidality. Go gently. EPISODE SPONSOR This episode is proudly brought to you by Tommee Tippee Australia. I'm Brandon Green, and I want to share my experience of being admitted to a psychiatric ward even though I believe I'm mentally sane.My admission came after I had a viral infection in February 2020, which caused unusual symptoms like strokes, memory lapses, and extreme sensitivity to sunlight.I struggled to get a proper diagnosis from medical professionals, and my friends and family couldn't understand what I was going through.Over time, I developed sensitivities to EMFs (Electromagnetic Fields) and mold toxins, conditions that were poorly understood by many doctors.I've been frustrated with the medical system and the challenges of getting the right diagnosis and treatment for my health issues. We Don't Think Like You podcastA'vyzion and his friends discuss their favorite shows and worldly topics unfiltered Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showLETS GO BRANDON GREEN PODCAST - https://letsgobrandongreen.com/
When Sarah was discharged from the mother-and-baby psychiatric hospital, she felt both refreshed and proud. Her recovery from postpartum anxiety and OCD became a badge of honour. But that wasn't the end of Sarah's story with maternal mental ill health. Severe depression, a medication change, a presentation to the emergency department, and a second and third MBU admission filled pages of a book she thought she had already closed. Join me for part two of Sarah's story as she is once again forced to confront the way she sees mental health, recovery, and herself, and where she grapples with both the relief and shame around being a ‘frequent flyer' of the psychiatric hospital. Please note, this episode discusses suicidality and suicidal ideation. Go gently. Jessie Seneca is the Founder of More of Him Ministries. Her mission is to help women grow in God's Word and experience His touch on their lives one Word at a time. To help women experience God's Truth and its life-changing effect on their lives by encouraging them to spend time with the Lord daily and enjoy His presence. Her vision with her ministries is to increase women's awareness of God's presence in their lives which will inspire them to move into a whole-hearted lifestyle, one devoted entirely to God. You would never have believed that a woman who has founded multiple ministries would have had a five-month stay in the psych ward- but it happened. Jessie was just twenty-seven when her anxiety and stress became unbearable. At the time she had a 2-year-old and a 6-year-old, which added quite a bit of pressure, but this envelopment of her anxiety left her crippled and broken. Her husband stayed by her side and advocated for her, insisting that the symptoms and stressors of his wife in the current state of collapse were extremely out of character and needed to be tested and examined. After pushing for answers, the diagnosis was found that Jessie had Cushing Syndrome. Cushing syndrome happens when the body has too much of the hormone cortisol for an extended period. This can result from the body making too much cortisol, a steroid hormone that regulates the metabolism and the immune response. It is also very important in helping the body respond to stress. The diagnosis finally made sense of all her symptoms wreaking havoc on her life. Although the experience was miserable, and one she will never forget, it did bring her closer to Christ and became the foundation of her faith. There are descriptions of suffering early in this episode that some listeners may find distressing. As hospitals and institutions across the European frontline were taken over to serve the war effort in the 1940s, what happened to psychiatric hospitals, housing some of the continent's most vulnerable in often prison-like conditions? Well, approximately 45,000 psychiatric patients died of starvation and disease in France alone. One psychiatrist described the scenes he witnessed during that time as being as bad as the concentration camps. But there was one hospital that, not only defied this fate but thrived during the war. Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole, in Southern France, had a death rate of less than 10 per cent – and no deaths from malnutrition. Not only did staff and patients stay alive through pooling skills to create food, foraging in the local area and keeping livestock, it actually became a hub of the French Resistance - storing ammunition, and acting as a safe house for Jewish refugees and freedom fighters. The hospital not only fought fascism but also provided a more community-focused treatment that proved to have a revolutionary effect on patients.Joining Dan on the podcast to tell this extraordinary story is Ben Platts-Mills, a writer who has worked in the mental health sector for 16 years. He came across it when he was looking into the work of French painter Jean Debuffet and saw that much of the artwork he'd collected was done by inpatients at Saint Alban during the war.You can read more about Saint Alban-sur-Limagnole and Ben's other work here: https://www.benplatts-mills.com/Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today!Download the History Hit app from the Google Play store.Download the History Hit app from the Apple Store.
