Dave Lapham caught up with Dave Berk following a wild day of news surrounding the Cincinnati Bengals for the seventh training camp report on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics. Lap talks about the former Iowa tight end and what he brings to the field as well as what happened during practice as the Bengals were forced inside the bubble due to the weather. Also discussed was how Joe Burrow continues to have the best training camp of his career, the defense fully understanding what new defensive coordinator Al Golden wants, and Lapham's time being able to question and learn from NFL on-field officials.

Join us as we dive deep into the latest developments, position battles, and the overall vibe surrounding the Bengals as they gear up for the 2025 NFL season. Dave Lapham was on hand to witness the physical escalation firsthand, noting the immediate shift in energy and physicality once the pads came on. "You get the pads on, and the pads pop and crack a little bit, and all of a sudden the intensity and the physicality of the practices ramp up, and they ramp up quickly," said Lapham. He highlighted how the defense came out strong early in the day, making plays and running to the football with exceptional pursuit. He observed a very high timing factor that made for a spirited day. The intensity was electric today. Every person on the field wanted to get involved and be part of the action. It was a great day to see both sides of the football make plays for each other. The defensive line really did a good job of getting its hands up and tipping passes. Key Discussion Points: Pad Level Impact: Lapham emphasizes the clear transition in practice dynamics with the introduction of pads. He points out that Zac Taylor even touched on the need for increased physicality in his pre-practice presser. Defense vs. Offense: Lapham initially notes a strong showing from the defense, which creates turnovers and disrupts the passing game. He then details how the offense found its rhythm, with Joe Burrow making some impressive deep throws. He ultimately summarizes the day as a back-and-forth affair. Standout Offensive Plays: Lapham highlights some significant offensive plays from the day, including impressive performances by wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. The former running a pass right down the middle for a huge play, and the latter catching a pass and keeping his feet in bounds for a completion. He also notes the buzz surrounding a great reception by the up-and-coming tight end Mike Gesicki. Defensive Line Improvement: "Shamar Stewart, signing his contract on Saturday and stepping on the field on Sunday, made a huge impact on the defense." Lapham shines the spotlight on the Bengals' defensive line. He notes that Shamar Stewart really had some breakups on the line of scrimmage. He notes that pass deflections and tips need to increase. Second-Year Players: Lapham discusses some second-year defensive players. He notes that Chris Jenkins is having a significant impact on the Bengals, while BJ Hill is recovering. 90-Man Roster Updates: News of free agents who have made their way into training camp. Will the Bengals sign tight end Noah Fant? Offense and Defense: A discussion about which side of the football is further along. “There's something I find strangely moving about the ‘Extracts' section of Moby Dick—before we even get into the text—by virtue of the attention that has been paid to the whale,” writer Wyatt Mason says in this episode of The World in Time. “It's astonishing as you're reading through. It's proof of two kinds of life. It's proof of the life of the creature itself. But it's also proof of the life of the mind and the attention that we pay—meaning, we readers and we writers pay—through time to this creature, which is very different from the elephant because most of us never see one in our lifetimes. If we're fortunate, we might, but for the most part, no. So they reside or they live in texts.” With this episode, the second in an intermittent series on the literature, history, and science of the sea, The World in Time launches onto the waters of Moby Dick. The episode begins with excerpts from a pair of conversations Lewis Lapham recorded during his final years as host. First, Lapham speaks with Richard J. King about his 2019 book, Ahab's Rolling Sea: A Natural History of Moby-Dick. In the second excerpted interview, recorded in 2022, Lapham talks with Aaron Sachs about Up From the Depths: Herman Melville, Lewis Mumford, and Rediscovery in Dark Times. The episode concludes with a new conversation. Wyatt Mason and Donovan Hohn talk about the first time they read Moby Dick, about teaching Melville's novel to incarcerated students enrolled in the Bard Prison Initiative, and then, like a pair of sub-sub-librarians, they swim through two curious documents, “Etymologies” and “Extracts,” that precede the famous first sentence of Melville's tragic Leviathan American novel.

Golden's system is creating problems for opponents to move the football against the Cincinnati Bengals' defense. Plus, Lapham reveals how Burrow himself has been referencing the impressive play of the Bengals' secondary, noting how they're making the offense earn every single yard. Is the back end of the defense the biggest surprise early in camp?

“In a famous episode, he says his name is Nobody, which in a way is obviously a lie,” says writer, scholar, and translator Daniel Mendelsohn in this episode of The World in Time. “But in another way is sort of true because he has become a nobody, right? And another way to describe the sort of narrative arc of The Odyssey is: he has to go from being a nobody and reclaim his identity and be a somebody again. So, the question of the nature of identity—you know, he's been changed by twenty years of aging, by trauma, by terrible suffering, and yet when he gets home, he has to ‘prove,' quote-unquote, that he is the same person who left. And that, I think, raises one of the most fascinating questions of the epic—and this speaks to something we know about from our own lives—which is: is there a part of you that remains the same despite the changes that we undergo in life? And that's the sort of paradox, I think, that's at the center of the poem. Everybody changes in twenty years, and yet you feel the same in many ways. The Odyssey delves into these very profound questions.” This week's episode of The World in Time is the first in a series of episodes about The Sea (Summer 2013). Donovan Hohn speaks with Daniel Mendelsohn about his new translation of The Odyssey, traveling back to antiquity in search of the origins of the Homeric epic. Then, in archival audio from 2013, editorial board member Aidan Flax-Clark interviews Lewis H. Lapham about his childhood reading of Moby-Dick, about Lapham's greenhorn voyages, and about a doomed shipwreck hunt in the early 1960s that Lapham wrote about for The Saturday Evening Post.

“They would take you around, introduce you to all of their contacts, translate for you, and help you put together the story,” says scholar-journalist Kira Brunner Don in this week's episode of The World in Time. “And I often felt like, you pay them, of course, a day rate, but there was this understanding that real news was made by American journalists who flew in and told you what was what. All of us were depending on journalists from the country, or writers from the country, who knew it far better than we did and really had the context and the sensibility. But there was this unspoken rule that they'll be biased. I really felt like I wanted to create something that instead focused on the actual voices of the people who live in the countries we're covering.” This week on the podcast Donovan Hohn hosts a two-part episode. First, he speaks with Kira Brunner Don, former executive editor of Lapham's Quarterly, about the making of our first issue, States of War, from Winter 2008, and about the magazine Brunner Don edits now, Stranger's Guide. In part two of this episode, Hohn speaks with Nathan Brown, translator of Verso's new dual-language edition of Charles Baudelaire's The Flowers of Evil, about the history of Baudelaire's magnum opus. Brown gives us a guided tour of “Recueillement,” the Baudelaire poem read at Lewis Lapham's memorial service, which Brown has translated anew for Lapham's Quarterly, under the title “Introspection.”
“Lewis was always engaging with some important piece of literature from the past,” says historian and classicist Emily Allen-Hornblower in this episode of The World in Time, edited from audio recorded at the memorial service held for Lewis H. Lapham in September 2024. “You can be chatting about the insanity of the current political landscape and quickly things would shift to how history repeats itself, how humanity simply does not learn. And Thucydides or Cicero would rear their heads. To quote Cicero, ‘To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history?' Lewis understood that without the past, we lose the ability to think productively or even understand the present. He made himself a warrior for the humanities, putting up a splendid fight on behalf of the arts and letters. 'Til the end.” In this second of two episodes this week, we are joined once again by Lewis, first in the tributes and remembrances of his friends and colleagues and then in his own voice. Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis introduces the proceedings. Former Harper's Magazine literary editor Ben Metcalf recalls Lapham the mentor. Emily Allen-Hornblower reads from Homer and Baudelaire. Actor Alec Baldwin reads Mark Twain's essay “At the Funeral.” Actor Christopher Lloyd performs Prospero's epilogue from Shakespeare's The Tempest. Producer and director Sandy Gotham Meehan shares a letter by Flaubert. In audio from our archives, Lewis Lapham reads from “'Round Midnight,” his preamble to Music, the Fall 2017 issue of Lapham's Quarterly.
“I'm an essayist, not a podcaster,” says Lapham's Quarterly acting editor Donovan Hohn, “but then the same could be said of Lewis, who took the form and the medium of the podcast and did with it what he'd done all of his adulthood: have conversations with people whose voices he wished to hear. Seasoned listeners to The World in Time may rest assured that similar conversations will resume shortly. This episode, my first behind the microphone, won't be a conversation, but it will be a duet. I'll be sharing the microphone some with Lewis Lapham.” This week on the podcast Donovan Hohn hosts two episodes devoted to the life, career, and memory of our founding editor, Lewis H. Lapham. In this first episode, Hohn announces the Quarterly's plans for Summer 2025, shares excerpts from a keynote address Lapham delivered at Bard College's Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities in 2011, pays tribute to Lapham the essayist, and gives an account of the months preceding and following Lewis' death in July 2024.
In this episode of Perspectives, we speak with Benjamin Breen and Jonathan Moreno on the history of psychedelic drugs in America. There is a resurgence of interest in psychedelics in the medical world as possible treatments for conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. This resurgence comes after a period during which psychedelic drugs were thought to be dangerous and have no medical value. An earlier perception was more optimistic. Figures such as Margaret Meade and Timothy Leary looked to drugs like peyote and LSD to allay fears, provide insights, broaden cultural perspectives and lead to chemical enlightenment. As mainstream institutions take yet another look, join us to examine the changing legal, medical and cultural perspectives on psychedelic drugs. Benjamin Breen is Associate Professor of history at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His second book is Tripping on Utopia: Margaret Meade, the Cold War and the Troubled Birth of Psychedelic Science. In addition to his academic publications, his writing has appeared in the The Washington Post, Paris Review Daily, The Atlantic, Slate, Aeon, The Pacific Standard, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Public Domain Review, Nautilus, and Lapham's Quarterly. Dive back into the fascinating world of NFL scouting in Part 2 of Dave Lapham's insightful conversation with Cincinnati Bengals Scouting Director Mike Potts. Following up on their initial discussion, Lapham and Potts delve deeper into the intricate process of evaluating talent for the NFL Draft, offering Bengals fans and draft enthusiasts a rare glimpse behind the curtain. This segment tackles the crucial balance between on-field performance ("the tape") and athletic testing metrics from events like the NFL Combine. Potts emphasizes that while game film remains the ultimate arbiter ("the biggest deal is put on the tape and what do you see, right?"), athletic testing provides valuable context and potential indicators. They discuss the challenge of projecting players whose testing numbers might not align perfectly with their college production, exploring how scheme, coaching, or usage might influence what's seen on film. Can a player with "freakish" athletic traits but modest college stats be unlocked in the Bengals' system? Potts explains how the scouting department works to answer these complex questions. A significant portion of the discussion revolves around gathering comprehensive player intelligence. Potts details how the Bengals leverage every available resource – from internal coaching staff insights (mentioning new additions like Al Golden and Jerry Montgomery, who bring fresh perspectives from college and other pro teams) to extensive networks of college contacts. He explains the value of coaches who have either game-planned against a prospect or coached them directly, providing nuanced understanding beyond the raw film. The conversation highlights the importance of the player interview process. It's not just about football knowledge; it's about understanding the person, their character, work ethic, and how they might fit into the Bengals' locker room culture. Potts shares how they assess football IQ – can the player articulate concepts, understand schemes, and "talk football" intelligently when breaking down film? Interestingly, he notes that sometimes the most impressive prospects aren't the most polished interviewees, and vice-versa, requiring scouts to look deeper. Lapham probes Potts to see whether players ever ask insightful questions back, revealing another layer of the evaluation. Potts, a former quarterback himself (William & Mary, brief pro stints), shares his perspective on how having played the game informs his scouting approach. He discusses how that experience helps him understand locker room dynamics, recognize subtle on-field traits, evaluate positional nuances, and relate to the pressures players face. This lived experience adds a crucial dimension to interpreting player profiles. They touch upon the current state of the Bengals' roster-building philosophy, acknowledging the "good problem" of having drafted exceptionally well with stars like Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins. The discussion implicitly covers the challenges of retaining top talent under the salary cap, referencing the franchise tag on Higgins and Chase's potential market-setting value. The ongoing situation with Trey Hendrickson is also alluded to, illustrating the constant evaluation involved in managing the roster and cap, weighing player value against compensation and team needs. Potts reinforces the goal isn't to get rid of good players, but to continuously find ways to improve the team through all avenues – draft, free agency, and trades – while maintaining financial flexibility and avoiding burdensome "dead money." Specific position groups from the recent Combine are discussed, acknowledging the remarkable athleticism on display, particularly along the defensive and offensive lines and in the secondary. Potts notes the trend of players getting bigger, stronger, and faster each year, presenting exciting but challenging evaluations. They discuss the depth present in this year's draft across various positions, emphasizing that while some spots might be more "top-heavy," there's talent to be found throughout the draft. Ultimately, Potts paints a picture of a meticulous, multi-layered evaluation process that goes far beyond just watching highlights. It involves synthesizing film, athletic data, medical information, character assessments, scheme fit projections, and input from coaches and contacts to build a comprehensive draft board. He stresses the collaborative nature of the process and the goal of finding players who not only possess talent but also align with the Bengals' culture and vision for sustained success. This Part 2 discussion is essential viewing for anyone wanting to understand the modern NFL scouting landscape and the Cincinnati Bengals' specific approach to building a championship-caliber roster.

In this episode of "In the Trenches with Dave Lapham," former NFL offensive lineman and Bengals analyst Dave Lapham delivers an in-depth breakdown of the Cincinnati Bengals' offseason plans, focusing on free agency, roster construction, and the team's approach to managing the salary cap. Lapham dives into the Bengals' strategy, emphasizing their focus on versatility, responsible spending, and avoiding the pitfalls of dead money. Lapham begins by highlighting the Bengals' key re-signings, including Mike Gesicki, BJ Hill, and Cody Ford. He emphasizes these players' versatility, noting that they can play multiple positions and contribute in various ways on the field. Lapham points out that re-signing these players allows the Bengals to maintain continuity and familiarity within their system. The discussion then shifts to the Bengals' approach to free agency, with Lapham analyzing the team's signings and releases. He notes that the Bengals have been active in retaining their own players and adding depth to their roster. He also discusses the challenges of managing the salary cap, particularly when it comes to signing high-profile players like Tee Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase, and Trey Hendrickson, in addition to Joe Burrow's existing contract. Lapham delves into the intricacies of contract structures, explaining how the Bengals prioritize upfront payment to players and structuring contracts to avoid dead money. He contrasts this approach with that of other teams, such as the Cleveland Browns, which have struggled with salary cap issues due to large contracts with significant dead money implications. The episode also explores the Bengals' needs on both sides of the ball. Lapham discusses the importance of strengthening the defensive line and finding a replacement for Alex Cappa at the guard position. He mentions several potential free agent targets and discusses the team's options for filling these needs. Lapham emphasizes that the Bengals are committed to building a competitive team while being fiscally responsible. He highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy salary cap and avoiding the boom-and-bust cycles that can plague teams that overspend or mismanage their finances. The discussion concludes with Lapham discussing the importance of team chemistry and the desire of players like Mike Gesicki to play alongside Joe Burrow and the Bengals' talented receiving corps. He notes that the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl and be part of a winning culture can be a significant factor in players' decisions, even if it means taking a slightly smaller contract. This episode provides valuable insights into the Bengals' off-season strategy and approach to building a sustainable, competitive team. Dave Lapham's expertise and analysis offer fans a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the Bengals as they navigate the complexities of NFL free agency and roster construction. In The Trenches with Dave Lapham is presented by First Star Logistics.
Today I have the immense privilege of speaking with Riley Lapham. Riley started dancing early in her home town of Wollongong, and by age 14, she had joined the Australian Ballet School. But from here, Riley's journey takes twists and turns. In her graduation year, Riley missed her final performance due to injury. But in a Center Stage-like moment, the then artistic director David McAllister offered her a contract with the company. In this brave and vulnerable conversation, Riley and I talk about what it's like to join a company while injured, and what it was like to deal with the worldwide shutdown that occurred in 2020 as a junior member of the company. Riley also speaks about a topic she's not yet discussed publicly—her journey with long Covid—what it was like to contract Covid just as she was nominated for Telstra Ballet Dancer of the Year, and then the unexpected journey of not getting better. We talk about the grief and the devastation that followed the acceptance of a slow recovery, her decision to move to France, and the journey back to the stage with the Australian Ballet.Riley continues to train and work with the Australian Ballet's rehabilitation team, while gaining her strength to make a return to the stage. To continue to follow all of Riley's wonderful adventures, you can find her on Instagram at @rileylapham. It was a long plane ride back to Cincinnati following the Bengals 34-27 Week 11 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Dave Lapham reacts to the Bengals' latest loss despite Joe Burrow having another big game. Burrow threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns, and receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins combined for 16 catches for 223 yards and three touchdowns, wasting another chance to work towards making the playoffs. Burrow, who is leading the NFL with 3,028 passing yards and 27 touchdowns with only four interceptions, is having a magical type of season quarterbacks usually have on teams pushing for championships, not on the outside looking in at the playoffs. Despite being 4-7 heading into their bye, the Bengals are still in the hunt for a playoff berth if they can return and put together a winning streak in their final six games that will start against AFC North rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are finding ways to win games and stand with an 8-2 mark so far. Be sure to participate in the First Star Logistics Giveaway each week the Bengals play. There was significant excitement early in the Cincinnati Bengals' 17-7 win over the New York Giants as Joe Burrow recorded the longest touchdown run ever by a Bengals quarterback when he went 47-yards on third-and-18 quarterback keeper and closed out the game when Chase Brown sealed the second win of the season with a 30-yard touchdown run with just under two minutes left. In between, the Bengals' defense got a great game from former Giants draft pick B.J. Hill, as he made several big plays and maybe the biggest play of the night by cornerback DJ Turner when he knocked down a fourth-down pass from Daniel Jones that led up to Brown's touchdown run. While it may not have been the cleanest or most exciting game, it was a win, giving Bengals fans a Victory Monday for only the second time this season. Dave Lapham returned to the First Star Logistics Studios to react to what happened on Sunday Night Football in primetime.

It was another emotional day for Dave Lapham while he called the game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs on the First Star Logistics Bengals Radio Network on Sunday afternoon. On Monday, Lapham returned to the First Star Logistics Studios to express his reaction to the Bengals' 26-25 loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Fans have gotten used to the fact that when these two teams meet, the games will be close, and this one was no different. The Chiefs got a late flag on a 4th-and-16 pass interference call on rookie Daijahn Anthony, which allowed Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker the chance to kick a game-winning 51-yard field goal. After time to digest the outcome, Lap is ready to react to the heartbreaking loss that moved the Bengals to 0-2 on the season, with the Washington Commanders coming to Paycor Stadium for Monday Night Football.
After spending multiple days in Chicago for a joint practice and the second preseason game of the year against the Chicago Bears, the Cincinnati Bengals left with various injuries, sloppy play, and sloppy weather. After returning to Cincinnati, Dave Lapham joined Dave Berk to discuss the events of the past few days with a focus on the Bengals' 27-3 loss against the Bears, where they played almost all backups against the Bears front-line players. Who stepped forward with important performances as the days count down until the Bengals must reduce their roster to the NFL mandatory 53? All that and more in the latest Dave Lapham In The Trenches, presented by First Star Logistics.
Dave Lapham gave Cincinnati Bengals rookie offensive tackle Amarius Mims much praise for his performance in the Bengals' first preseason game against Tampa Bay on Saturday night. However, on Monday, Zac Taylor announced Mims had suffered a strained pectoral muscle and would be out multiple weeks. Lapham checked in before the Bengals took the practice field for his thoughts on an injury he knows much about, having suffered one during his own playing career. Get the latest Breaking News on the injury to Amarius Mims on Dave Lapham In The Trenches, presented by First Star Logistics.
Jump in the trenches as Dave Lapham looks at the good, the bad, and who stood out from the Cincinnati Bengals 14-17 preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night at Paycor Stadium. From kickoff, Bengals fans had much to be excited about as quarterback Joe Burrow returned from the injury that robbed him from the second half of last season. Burrow didn't disappoint, leading the Bengals on a 12-play opening drive that ended with a Tee Higgins touchdown as rookie right tackle Amarius Mims showed why the Bengals coaching staff was ecstatic when they drafted him in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Georgia. Rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton also showed why many are excited to see him paired with Burrow, as the Alabama product led the Bengals in receiving with three catches for 82 yards and a touchdown from Logan Woodside. But the night wasn't filled with all good things with the Bengals as they struggled to stop the run on defense and made costly mistakes along the way. However, one player on defense really showed up and earned praise from Lapham as the First Star Logistics Player of the Game. First Star Logistics presents Dave Lapham In The Trenches.

In this episode, Wilcots and Lapham discuss the 2024 Cincinnati Bengals schedule and whether the NFL was kind or cruel to Joe Burrow and company as they look to rebound from missing the NFL playoffs during the 2023 season despite having a winning record. While the Bengals won't have a game out of the country, Wilcots and Lap both feel the window is opening, and the NFL could soon be sending the Bengals for a match-up out of the country. Also discussed is how Solomon feels about the Bengals 2024 draft and the player he feels will be the biggest steal in the draft taken by Zac Taylor and the Bengals.
