Finding a Niche, Remaining Debt-Free: How Kari Miller Built Tiny Dog Press

Episode 35 with Kari Miller of Tiny Dog Press is about growing a small business at your own pace, and more. When a friend asked Kari Miller to print his wedding invitations, she saw that his fiancé at the time had created an illustration of Baltimore's “Greatest City in America” bench for their RSVP card. Kari thought the image would make a great card, and this was the beginning of Tiny Dog Press. In this episode, Kari talks about: ·       How she discovered her niche in cards even though she doesn't consider herself a “word person”; ·       How she developed the theme for her cards; ·       How she navigates conversations about small business pricing with customers; ·       What she is most proud of (hint: it has to be do with finances); ·       How she works to keep her small business from being too all-consuming and ultimately find balance in her life; and more. Thank you for listening! Follow Tiny Dog Press on Instagram! Follow We Built This Life on Instagram! In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Tracy talks about ADHD and gratitude. A practice of gratitude is important for every one but for those of us with ADHD it’s even more important. Why? Because processing emotions start in the brain itself and emotions motivate action. That means that if your emotions are negative you will be completely unmotivated but if you’re emotions are positive and you’re working in an area of high interest, the sky is the limit.   Discover: Why we can’t get anything done without positive emotion  How positive emotion is directly related to dopamine, memory, behavior, focus and motivation.  How gratitude directly influences our emotions How a practice of gratitude helps our ADHD symptoms How gratitude affects sleep How gratitude affects executive function including focus How gratitude makes it more likely that we will stick to our goals and start new habits How gratitude boosts dopamine and seratonin in our brains How gratitude allows us to focus on those things that are going right in our lives rather than focusing on what’s wrong.  How gratitude will make you more friends and people that want to be around you How to start a Gratitude Journal where you start and end every day in positive emotion What Tracy’s Positive Emotion Dossier is and how it can help you How the idea in the book 29 Gifts helped Tracy increase her gratitude and uplevel her holidays last year.  How Abraham Hicks can help you to change your negative thoughts to focus more on gratitude and why your thoughts will always determine how happy you are.    Resources:   ADHD and the Practice of Gratitude by Dr. Kari Miller   The Five Minute Journal   29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life   Tracy's Positive Emotion Dossier from Your ADHD Brain Is A-OK!

Kari Miller was serving in active military duty, getting ready for officer training school, when a drunk driver smashed into the car she was traveling in. The driver of her car was killed. Kari survived, but lost both her legs in the crash; one amputated above the knee, one below. As she recovered, Miller first competed in wheelchair basketball, then discovering sitting volleyball. It was an intense experience: the first ball came at her “like it had smoke and fire shooting from it. I just screamed and dove out of the way,” she says. “My coach immediately informed me that there is no screaming in volleyball!” Miller joined the U.S. Paralympics Women’s Sitting Volleyball National Team in 2006, and two years later helped the team earn a silver medal in the Beijing Games. Kari played every set of every match as the team's libero, one of the key defensive positions that anticipates return balls, then passes them to the setter with hard, controlled hits.
