The Art & Science of Learning to Read the Room | How to Make Your Audience Feel Both Seen and Heard Much of what we desire, others desire as well. This is true about communication. If you give others the satisfaction of feeling seen and heard, chances are they'll feel more inclined to reciprocate. How is this done? Developing a Healthy Intolerance to Our Ignorance | Why You Should Challenge Any Uninformed OpinionsI fundamentally believe in freedom of speech. We all have the right, and in some cases, the responsibility to speak up and communicate our perspectives. Whether this be in the social-political arena or in our personal lives, our voice carries weight. It's important to leverage our voices where we can, and create an impact that will not only positively influence our lives, but also the lives of the generations after us.But leveraging our voice comes with a responsibility. We need to each hold ourselves accountable, ensuring we are not communicating from a place of ignorance, intolerance, and indifference. Why? Because why inflict injury and do damage, when we can leverage our voice to build and co-create.It is ultimately your callDo you have any questions? Understanding Self-Advocacy as Communicating a Boundary | Articulating Your Needs & Defending SelfAs we follow-up from our video last week, we pivot and focus on the topic of self-advocacy.Many of us do not understand what it means to advocate for our rights, wants, needs and desires. This is mostly because the trail that was blazed on our behalf was done so well, we never really needed to think about it let alone make a stance. But the world is a constant ebb and flow, and as many of the "givens" fall under attack that translate in both private and public spheres. Refining your ability to advocate for yourself, has become more important now than ever.Do you have any questions? Taking Radical Responsibility for our Growth | Being Intentional About the Person You are BecomingEvery choice bears its own consequence. While we typically equate consequences to external factors, we often overlook the weight of our decisions on ourselves. We discount the impact that our actions, behaviours, and thoughts have on our evolving sense of self. The impact our agency, or lack thereof, has on our becoming. No one can avoid becoming, it's a continuous process from birth, into the next life (whatever you believe in). All to say, if any part of you cares about making the most out of this life, then it's time to take tapping into your own potential seriously.Because the person that you become, at the end of day, will only ever be your responsibility.Do you have any questions? Why You Should Master the Art of Indifference? Learning to Reserve Your Energy for What Serves YouYou care too much.Specifically, about putting your energy into the people, places, and situations that you already know don't serve you.And how do you know? Because you don't particularly like the people, places, or situations in question. Why ruminate and spend time thinking about, or expend your energy acting on negative feelings and negative impulses? Better to recognize the power of indifference as the natural next step from dislike, so that your energy is always on reserve for the people, places and situations that matter most to you. Not least.Read that again.Do you have any questions? As they say, "Birds of a feather, flock together."So there needs to be a differentiator. Something that you bring, that sets you apart in all the right ways... and often that game changing difference is in the non-shared experiences that we're too quick to forget. What layers into your perspectives and your points of view, are often influenced by the pivotal moments that are specific to your individual journey. Learning to Make the Right Call | Navigating Health & Wellness and Building a Network of ExpertiseThere is not a lot that compares with the intimidation we feel, when we find ourselves confronted with how little we know about our own health. This is especially the case when we have an issue with our health and while we want better and to do better, it's hard to know which experts to lean on, as we focus on rehabilitation. We can find ourselves becoming skeptical about everything we hear, which isn't helpful, or we can build a network of experts that offer solutions to support our needs. There is no, "one size fits all solution" when managing our health. There also i a need to play an active role in driving the decisions that will support you in the long-term. You know you best. It's important to leverage that insight, when exchanging with experts and building a rehabilitation plan that is wholistic and supportive of your needs.Do you have any questions? Coercive Communication is Maladaptive & Toxic | Establishing Boundaries in Response to IntimidationHow do you engage with someone who isn't used to hearing the word no?We often assume that the majority of people engage and interact with a baseline desire of being civil, but that isn't always the case.Sometimes, in conversation what you are up against is an individual who sees your personal agency and autonomy as a threat. Anyone who is comfortable making you feel uncomfortable to get their own way, is being coercive.Coercion is the most insidious form of communication because the consequence of non-compliance means having to deal with aggression, hostility, and intimidation. Your agreement is either given, or it is taken. If you want to be aware of the early signs that you are in a coercive dialogue with someone in order to mitigate the damage and position yourself accordingly, this is a video you should be watching, Do you have any questions? Unchecked Bias Breeds Contempt | Your Inner Narratives Dictate How You Feel About Yourself & OthersLimiting beliefs are a double-edged sword in that you limit yourself just as much as you limit the people that you impose your beliefs and attitudes upon.Chances are, if you are comfortable with the biases that stereotypes that you have with others, you are limiting your own potential and growth by imposing narratives on yourself. The narratives that you feel best align to who you are and your circumstances. News flash, we each carry greater potential and capability than any of the pigeonholes that society asks us to choose from. Rather than indulge in feelings of contempt for those who dare to step out of the box society placed them in, why not take it as motivation to step outside of the box you've placed yourself? You'll find in life that no matter the privilege, benefits and social standing a box gives you... it still by its own definition limits you. So rather than feel contempt for the limits that you have allowed to be imposed on yourself, and instead of choosing to impose those limits on others... why not let people surprise you. It's time we let everyone off our hook.Do you have any questions? Always at the edge of our seats, ready to tune in, rather than focus our attention on the lives that should matter most to us: our own lives. We can only position ourselves to create the lives of our dreams if the majority of our attention is on building from the ground up.Often, the lives we allow ourselves to envy or to resent, came with blood, sweat, and tears unseen, and that we ourselves would be unwilling to sacrifice. It's time to put your attention on the main character of your own story. Dealing with Dishonour | 3 Patterns of Behaviour that Will Never Serve Others or You & What to Do ✅There was once upon a time where people would choose death before dishonour. Whether that was dishonour to themselves, their family, friends, or otherwise... they held themselves accountable to a standard of behaviour. Those days feel like they're long gone.People often give themselves licence to say what they want, about whom, they want, to whomever they want, not at all worried about how the backlash reflects on them, and the impact that their actions carry. It's for our own benefit to hold people accountable for the ways they choose to dishonour us, dishonour the people around us, and even dishonouring themselves. It's time we held one another accountable to a higher standard of behaviour.Do you have any questions? How Developing Self-Love, Self-Respect & Self-Acceptance Require You to Learn How to Honour YourselfMany of us have no idea how to honour ourselves. We hear the word, but have a vague idea as to what it might mean in practice,Or maybe, we disregard the ways that we show up, or allow others to show up, that we recognize dishonour ourselves. In that, the behaviours and actions show disdain or disregard for your individuality, your emotional expressiveness, and infringe on your right to feel heard, seen, and valued. There isn't a lot out there to provide guidance in how we hold ourselves to a standard of excellence in how we speak, what we think, and the things we do.In 2025, maybe it's time to start bringing those conversations back.Do you have any questions? Some decisions are time-sensitive, but most decisions give you the flexibility to reflect and deliberate on the best move forward. There are many paths and trajectories to a common objective. It would be hard to think critically, if you've limited your decisions to what others have told you, or if your personal set of beliefs limit you. It's equally hard to think critically if you find that you are easily frightened from ambiguity, and seek out black and white answers. Very little in life is black and white. Think Before You Act. How Strategic Thinking Helps You to Ask for Forgiveness and not for PermissionMost decisions do not need to be made on the fly. Many of us manufacture the time-sensitivity to our decision-making. Don't believe me? Take into consideration all of the times you had to take your foot out of your mouth, backpedal, or apologize. All of those instances could have been avoided if you took a little bit more time to think before you act. Much can be said about timing and delivery, as well as the timing of our delivery. But if you don't take the time to think it through, you'll fail to make timing of the delivery work for you.Do you have any questions? Giving Yourself Permission to Express Yourself, Emotionally | Finding Alignment in Self-ExpressionA large percentage of us were not raised in environments where we felt psychologically safe enough to express ourselves emotionally. For many of us, the only way to survive was to adapt. By adapt I mean to repress and suppress our emotional expression, to accommodate the people around us who, took issue with our evolving sense of self-expression. We aren't always going to get it right. That said, many of us deal with wounds from our emotions not being validated or valued, because of how those emotions were expressed. There is nothing wrong with experiencing emotions. We are all emotional beings.Don't allow someone's inability to support you in navigating your big emotions, keep you from finding alignment to those emotions, and learning how to master those emotions later in life. Many of us feel lost, and tapping into your emotional expression is how you find your way back to self.Do you have any questions? How do you stay true to your values when others are playing political games? What if your purpose feels too small compared to others? And how do we raise kids who can handle life's inevitable hard blows? We're back for Part 2 of our special Finding Mastery Ask Me Anything with Dr. Michael Gervais and our good friend—author, documentarian, podcaster, football analyst, and renaissance man, Yogi Roth. Through thoughtful questions from our community, we dive deep into the messy realities of modern life: workplace politics, purpose discovery, and parenting with intention.Drawing from years of experience with elite performers and leaders, we explore practical strategies for maintaining integrity in competitive environments while building the inner foundation that sustains long-term success and fulfillment.Key insights we explored:When workplace politics get messy - How to protect your team's expertise while staying true to your valuesPurpose doesn't need to be grand - Why "being a great parent" is just as meaningful as "wells in Africa"The three pillars of authentic purpose - It must matter to you, be bigger than you, and have future orientationBuilding self-efficacy in children - Let them figure things out, celebrate effort over outcomes, and create safety in their strugglesThe discovery model vs. formal instruction - Why guided discovery creates deeper, more resilient learningManaging the "hungry ghost" - How connection to something bigger than yourself dissolves achievement addictionSignal vs. noise in feedback - Treating both praise and criticism as noise while trusting your inner circleThis conversation reminds us that the most meaningful work often happens in the quiet moments—how we handle daily challenges, raise our children, and stay connected to what truly matters. Whether you're navigating office politics, questioning your purpose, or trying to raise resilient kids, these insights offer practical wisdom for living with greater intention and authenticity.__________________Subscribe to our Youtube Channel for more powerful conversations at the intersection of high performance, leadership, and meaning: https://www.youtube.com/c/FindingMasteryGet exclusive discounts and support our amazing sponsors! The Eight Critical Success Factors No Entrepreneur Can Ignore with Daryl Urbanski

What differentiates successful entrepreneurs from those who struggle or fail? According to Daryl Urbanski, it comes down to eight critical success factors he's identified after interviewing more than 600 high-performing business owners.Daryl's own path reads like a masterclass in entrepreneurial evolution. From humble beginnings shoveling Canadian driveways, he transformed into a business growth specialist who helped NeuroGym generate $1.6 million in just six months (which expanded to $7.5 million within three years). His approach has always been evidence-based - investing over $50,000 in research to identify the patterns that consistently produce results. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Daryl breaks down the difference between simply "doing the work" and actually "running a business." Many entrepreneurs fail to recognize that delivering a service is only one component of running a successful operation. As he explains: "When you go to McDonald's, they never say the drive-thru's closed because Sally's got a cold." This illuminates why some technically skilled professionals struggle to scale beyond their own capacity.Perhaps most valuable is Daryl's strategic blueprint for building a six-figure business in just 90 days. Rather than focusing on low-ticket, high-volume offerings, he advocates identifying high-value solutions you can genuinely deliver, proving the concept through pre-sales, and maximizing face-to-face interactions with potential clients. "It's easier to make income selling $10,000 items than $10 items," he notes, reminding us that the effort to make a sale often remains similar regardless of price point. The episode culminates with profound insight into what truly sets successful entrepreneurs apart - their relationship with time. Daryl maintains strict discipline around time management, scheduling his day in 30-minute blocks and eliminating distractions that most people consider normal. On this episode of Mind the Gap, Jon Hutchinson is joined by educator, researcher, and author Neil Gilbride to explore the powerful concept of self-efficacy—and why it matters now more than ever in schools. Drawing from his new book, Neil delves into the psychological foundations of self-efficacy, its relationship to agency, and the practical ways it can transform classroom practice. He shares insights from his own diverse career, from play schemes to academia, and explains how educators can help pupils—and themselves—navigate complexity, build resilience, and believe in their capacity to succeed. Together, Jon and Neil discuss Bandura's legacy, the critical importance of managing failure, and why effective modelling is about more than just showing how—it's about lending belief. “If we're not proactively thinking hard about using our capacity to share knowledge and ways of being and working,” Neil says, “then we're not using one of the most powerful weapons in our arsenal.” This episode offers a compelling and deeply human lens on what it means to teach, lead, and learn in today's education landscape.Dr Neil Gilbride CPSychol is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at University of Worcester and Associate Dean at Ambition Institute, one of the largest professional development providers in England. He has amassed 20 years of experience working across education as an academic, practitioner and knowledge mobiliser. Neil's research interweaves adult developmental psychology and complexity theory to better understand educational leadership and practitioner development. Dr Neil Gilbride makes a compelling case for how Bandura's self efficacy theory can help refine how we understand and support our students AND how we design and teach our lessons. There are plenty of pedagogy ‘how tos' alongside reflections about our role in shaping how students feel about their ability to ‘do it' in our particular domain - be that maths, English or cake baking. Along the way Neil shares his views on the dangers of PowerPoint, the ultimate purpose of teaching - and who he'd invite (along with Bandura) to a pedagogical dinner party. A double definition of happiness — and how to cultivate both parts. The new year gives us an opportunity to reflect on who we are and who we want to be. As we set resolutions and prepare for evolutions, this special four-part series on communication, happiness, and well-being explores practical ways to enhance our lives through better communication, deeper connections, and more meaningful choices. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to happiness, but according to Laurie Santos, everyone needs the two key components of contentment and fulfillment — or as she puts it, being happy in your life and happy with your life.“Being happy in your life [means] your life is filled with joy,” explains Santos, a Yale psychology professor and host of The Happiness Lab podcast. This felt sense of happiness — enjoying where we are, what we do, and who we're with — is essential, but it's not the only piece of the puzzle. Being happy with your life, she says, is the belief that “your life is going well. Being happy with your life gets closer to things like fulfillment and purpose.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Santos joins Matt Abrahams to explore how to cultivate both sides of her happiness equation, from building deeper connections with others to transforming the ways we communicate with ourselves. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.
