Vemos a garra, a determinação, a coragem, a resiliência e o renascimento", destacou. "Voltar a competir neste nível é gratificante. HAPPY VETERANS DAY!!!Our veteran population is crucial to our way of life for many reasons.  They have dedicated a portion of their lives to protecting our freedoms, shaping our nation, and setting the example of adaptability and service. Veterans Day is a time for us to stand united in showing our respect and support to those who have served. Veteran wellness is something that must be a united, daily effort. Service members face unique challenges throughout their military careers. The type, intensity, and duration of service, along with multiple layers of complexity during the transition process into veteran status can have a negative impact on health and well-being. This is a meaningful topic to both of us for many reasons and we are proud to focus on ways to collaborate with individuals and organizations who support veteran health and well-being.Welcome to SEASON TWO of The Nature of Wellness Podcast!!! Join us for this special premiere episode as we share two interviews with veterans who make life better for those who serve. John Langford served in the Marine Corps, as both enlisted and officer, for 23 years, retiring in 2009. During his service, John held multiple positions that focused on the health and well-being of active-duty Marines. John continues to devote his time to supporting those who have worn the uniform and currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Project Healing Waters, a non-profit dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings. John continues to devote his time to serving those who have served.John talks about the challenges that veterans face during the transition, how time in nature (especially near water) can positively impact health and well-being, the origins and incredible program offerings of PHW, and the power of resilience and authenticity. Sarah Evans served in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Captain. While serving in Afghanistan in 2012,  she was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, eventually leading to the amputation of her left leg at the hip. During her recovery, Sarah was introduced to adaptive sports, leading her down a path of self-discovery and growth. She has completed the 26.2-mile Bataan Memorial Death March and summited Mt. Kilimanjaro. Sarah has also competed in both the Warrior Games and Invictus Games and is currently a member of the US Amputee Soccer team. Sarah discusses some of the multi-dimensional wellness challenges veterans face, the need to build quality systems of support and finding your community, the power of “putting yourself out there,” and what is truly possible after facing adversity. We are beyond fortunate to have had these conversations and both left these discussions a bit different. Please subscribe, rate, and leave a review anywhere you listen to this podcast. We appreciate you all. Be Well-NOW Project Healing Waters Website: https://projecthealingwaters.orgInstagram: @phwffUS Amputee Soccer Association Website: usampsoccer.org Instagram: @usamputeesoccer    @usamputeesoccer_women * The Nature of Wellness Podcast is produced by the remarkable Shawn Bell.** The NOW theme song was written, performed, produced, and graciously provided by the incredibly talented Phil and Niall Monahan.

His story is not only one of courage and overcoming horrific obstacles from war, but also conquering myriad roadblocks throughout his life. At age 12, he lost his father and became the man of the house. Having been told by his high school guidance counselor he should just concentrate on going to a local junior college, the determined teen ended up with a scholarship to the University of Illinois. But just as things started rounding into shape in his young life, his mother unexpectedly died. Now Del Toro had to fully embrace the promise he gave his father to take care of his younger siblings. He walked away from his college dream and returned home to care for his family. With his siblings growing up, and family members close by, Del Toro made the tough decision to enlist in the Air Force. His skills were a natural fit and his superior officers could see his natural leadership qualities. Though recently married, with a baby boy to care for as well, he was deployed to Afghanistan. His strength and perseverance made his fellow cadets gravitate towards him. And then.December 5, 2005. Still, after being told he'd spend 18 months in the hospital, Del Toro was so determined to return home that he was released only two months into his stay. He still needed daily care from his wife, Carmen, and his greatest fear remained - would his young three-year-old son be frightened of his physical appearance? When father and son met again after months of separation, the young boy ran into his father's arms. All he wanted was his Dad back. His amazing story began inspiring other wounded troops, and soon thereafter Del Toro became an advocate for others in the Burn Unit and those badly injured. He continues to inspire today, speaking at numerous organizations and foundations, and numbers among his strongest friends President George W. Bush, Prince Harry, Gary Sinise, and Jon Stewart. Del Toro has gone on to set records and win medals at The Warrior Games and The Invictus Games. He won the Pat Tillman Courage Award at the ESPYs. Perhaps his most amazing accomplishment, though, occurred in February of 2010 when he became the first completely disabled airman ever to re-enlist in the Air Force and become an instructor. Though he couldn't deploy again he was at least back in the game.

Most of us will never know the full horrors of combat. Many Servicemen and women suffer life-changing injuries, visible or otherwise, whilst serving their country. How do these men and women find the motivation to move on and not be defined by their injuries? On a trip to the Warrior Games in the USA in 2013, HRH The Duke of Sussex saw first-hand how the power of sport can help physically, psychologically and socially those suffering from injuries and illness. He was inspired by his visit and the Invictus Games was born. The word ‘invictus' means ‘unconquered'. It embodies the fighting spirit of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and personifies what these tenacious men and women can achieve post injury. The Games harness the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country. The Invictus Games is about much more than just sport – it captures hearts, challenges minds and changes lives.
