Kristina Heagh-Avritt is a former public school teacher who now supports families in finding the best educational paths for their children. Kristina focuses on the pressing issues within the current educational framework—more rules, regulations, and a lack of connection with families and students. She emphasizes how the school system is broken and suggests that the solution lies in empowering parents to take control of their children's education through homeschooling. With her experience, Christina founded Vibrant Family Education (),where she helps families navigate the homeschooling landscape. One of the advantages of homeschooling is a personalized curriculum that caters to each child's unique learning style. This flexibility fosters a love for learning, as children can progress at their own pace without the pressure of a standardized curriculum. Kristina also dispels common myths about homeschooling, such as the belief that parents cannot be effective teachers or that homeschooled children lack socialization. She argues that parents are inherently their child's first teachers and can provide a supportive learning environment that nurtures their child's interests. In fact, many homeschooled children excel socially, often being more prepared for real-world interactions than their peers in traditional schools. With parents and former teachers like Kristina, education is quietly undergoing a revolution, one that places children and mastery first. Learning is becoming fun again. And more importantly, it's providing the skills kids need in this modern world. Join the conversation. Subscribers can enjoy exclusive, extended conversations from this podcast. Anurupa Ganguly is the founder & CEO of Prisms. She founded Prisms to scale a new world teaching model where students learn core math and science concepts spatially, physically and steeped in important real world contexts. Prisms targets bottleneck topics that are often memorized in lieu of deeply understood -- leading to huge gaps and drops offs over time in STEM. Anurupa and her team are transforming math education in the US by rapidly deploying the next generation of spatial computing devices across US K-12 districts, training teachers to integrate problem-driven learning with VR into core curriculum, and working with district leadership to rapidly improve joy, confidence and proficiencies in the modern math and science classrooms. She began her career as a math & physics teacher and later served in leadership roles across the Boston Public Schools, NYC DOE, and Success Academies. She holds degrees in EECS from MIT, and an EdM from BU. Her life's mission is to empower an equitable workforce in STEM.Recommended Resource:Experience on Demand by Jeremy Bailenson

He presents on diverse topics such as overcoming the impact of poverty, improving school climate, engaging in brain-based instruction, and addressing issues related to implicit bias. He is recognized as one of the nation's leading authorities on resiliency and applied brain science. Horacio has been a teacher, administrator, clinician, mental health director, and consultant to school districts across the United States. Horacio sits on the True Health Initiative Council of Directors, a coalition of more than 250 world-renowned health experts committed to educating on proven lifestyle principles as medicine. He is the author of the best-selling book, The Education Revolution, which applies brain science to improve instruction, behaviors, and school climate. His new book, The Poverty Problem, explains how education can promote resilience and counter poverty's impact on brain development and functioning. The Takeaway By understanding the profound effects of poverty-related stress on the brain, acknowledging the power of subconscious biases, and implementing practical strategies for emotional regulation, educators can foster resilience, equity, and optimal learning experiences for vulnerable students. As you listen Poverty-related stress can have a significant impact on the brain, leading to changes in memory, emotional regulation, and decision-making abilities. Societal biases, particularly those related to race, can be subconscious and influence our perceptions and interactions with others. Strategies for regulating emotions in the classroom include pre-planning, ritualizing the environment, and using rituals to help students regulate their systems faster and adjust. It is important to build protective factors and concrete skills for vulnerable students, especially those from poverty or who have experienced racism and bias. Teachers should have an understanding of how the brain learns and establish foundational knowledge for students before moving on to more complex topics. Revolutionaries and visionaries can get exhausted. They often sacrifice their own needs because they believe so strongly in the cause. Today I'm asking aloud: Does it have to be that way? Is there a sustainable approach to fighting for liberatory education? What might it look like to create change in education without martyring ourselves? My guest is Dr. Nadia Lopez, an award-winning educator who became a viral sensation after the popular blog Humans of New York featured her as one of their most influential people. Dr. Lopez founded Mott Hall Bridges Academy, a STEAM-focused middle school in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, in 2010, and served as the principal for ten years. Her Ted Talk on the Education Revolution has garnered more than a million views. In 2020, Dr. Lopez ended her tenure as Mott Hall Bridges Academy's principal as an act of self-preservation after developing a stress-related illness that threatened her life. The experience inspired her to develop a coaching program for women of color in educational leadership designed to build their capacity, with a focus on sustainability. Listen in as she shares her experience with past (and current) burnout, and what she's learned about finding a sustainable approach to doing good work in education.
