There are few people in medicine that have done more to address the gaps that we acknowledge here at the Wellness Paradox than Dr. Kenneth Cooper. From humble beginnings as a physician who was chastised for suggesting that people exercise to improve their health, Dr. Cooper is truly an icon in the field of medicine, health, and fitness. We couldn't be anymore delighted to have Dr. Cooper as our guest in episode 89. This conversation is less an interview on any one specific topic and more of a narrative from Dr. Cooper himself on the concept of exercise as medicine, and why this concept is so important for the health of our nation. This discussion spans a wide range of topics of interest to Wellness Paradox listeners. One thing is abundantly clear in this conversation, at 91 years old, Dr. Cooper has more energy than most people half his age. More importantly, the insights he provides are timeless lessons for all of us who seek to advance his mission and continue to solve the Wellness Paradox. Show Notes Page: https://www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/podcast/episode/89 Our Guest: Dr. Kenneth CooperFor more than 50 years, Kenneth H. Cooper, MD, MPH has inspired millions to exercise for good health since the release of his first best-seller Aerobics. Today Dr. Cooper is revolutionizing health and fitness again—calling on America and the world to Get Cooperized™. As a leading pioneer of preventive medicine, Dr. Cooper challenges everyone to follow these “8 Healthy Steps” to live better both sooner and later: maintain a healthy weight; make healthy food choices most of the time; exercise most days of the week; take the right supplements for you; do not use tobacco; control alcohol; manage stress; get a regular, comprehensive physical exam.Recognized as the leader of the international physical fitness movement and credited with motivating more people to exercise in pursuit of good health than any other person, Dr. Cooper has long advocated moving the field of medicine away from disease management to disease prevention. The Cooper philosophy, “It is easier to maintain good health through proper exercise, diet, and emotional balance than to regain it once it is lost,” has been proven valid in scientific research. At age 91 and having logged more than 38,000 miles running, Dr. Cooper sets an example for maintaining a healthy lifestyle by exercising at Cooper Aerobics Center on a regular basis, along with his wife, Millie, daughter, Berkley, son, Tyler, and their families—all to Get Cooperized.Follow us on social at the links below: https://www.facebook.com/wellnessparadox https://www.instagram.com/wellnessparadox/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/wellness-paradox-podcast https://twitter.com/WellnessParadox
In the late 1960s, Air Force surgeon Dr. Kenneth Cooper was evaluating military fitness plans when he realized that aerobic activities, what we now call cardio, like running and cycling, was the key to overall physical health. His 1968 book Aerobics launched the aerobics revolution that followed, as he inspired women like Jacki Sorensen and Judi Sheppard Missett to combine dance with exercise, creating Dance Aerobics and Jazzercise in the process. I'm joined on this episode by Dr. Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, Associate Professor History at The New School and author of Fit Nation: The Gains and Pains of America's Exercise Obsession. Our genetics are turned on or off by different variables in order to help our bodies survive. Power Quotes From Mark Sisson [tweetthis] "Primal living allows you to develop the skills you need to get in touch with your body and emotions." - @Mark_Sisson [/tweetthis] "I may have looked fit on the outside, but I was falling apart in the inside. There was this inflammation that was gathering and building inside my body. I had osteoarthritis in my feet, tendinitis in my hips, and even irritable bowl syndrome (IBS) which pretty much dictated my life. I began this diet to be healthy, but all of a sudden, I was at the unhealthiest point of my life. I had no idea about what was going with my body." - Mark Sisson on his personal experience with the negative impact of following high complex carbohydrate diet. "It fascinates me that there are now 35 different wearable devices that tell you how poorly you slept last night, but there's nothing out there to really address the problem. I try to create an intuitive sense about my body's needs and I try to coach people to do the same." - Mark Sisson on the power of intuitive sense to help us understand our minds and bodies to make beneficial changes for our health. "Primal living means that you've dialed into several different aspects of your life so that you don't have to stop and ask a device, "What do I do now?" You get to the point when you know what to do and what choices to make. Your intuitive decision making process is going to serve you in that moment and in the best way possible." - Mark Sisson on what primal living means and how our intuitive sense can help us make the best decisions about our health. "Primal living allows you to develop the skills you need to be in touch with your body, emotions, and everything that draws us in to enjoy life." - Mark Sisson on the benefits of primal living. "I don't want to ascribe genes as being 'good' or 'bad.' Genes are just doing what they're told to do. When you develop Type 2 Diabetes, that's not because of 'bad genetics. That happens because your human genes are addressing a problem that you've created with your eating and moving habits. Your body is just trying to prevent you from dying too soon from too much sugar." - Mark Sisson on why we shouldn't categorize genes as being 'good' or 'bad.' "The Paleo and Primal diets are converging. Initially, the Paleo Diet was only a diet that looked at no dairy, alcohol, very low unsaturated fats, and was fairly restrictive. When I came up with the Primal Blueprint, I wanted to create a place where people could go and not feel excluded, but invited. So we included as many foods that made sense so we don't exclude dairy like cream, butter, artisanal cheese, and even whole milk for some people. Paleo has always been about the diet, but Primal includes the entire lifestyle." - Mark Sisson on the difference between the Primal Blueprint and Paleo Diets and lifestyles. "Thoughts are just thoughts and they're not reality. What we worry or agonize about only exists in our minds as imagination. My wife, Carrie, keeps reminding me that when I let those thoughts dictate how I feel in the present moment, they actually take me out of the present moment." - Mark Sisson on what he's learned from his wife, Carrie, about emotional wellness and intelligence. "Wellness is more of a state of mind than a physical presence. Wellness is this feeling of serenity and peace, but also the ability to not be caught up in feelings of worry, anger, or angst. Wellness is not about re-thinking about previous decisions or past mistakes. It's about being in the present moment and therefore being able to extract the greatest amount of contentment, joy, and fulfillment from now." - Mark Sisson on what wellness means to him. Todd Whitthorne discusses Cooper Institute with director of development Connie Tyne. Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the “Father of Aerobics,” founded the Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1970, six months before opening his world famous preventive medicine clinic. He knew an independent research institute was needed to bridge the gap between fitness faddism and scientific legitimacy in order to establish the direct relationship that exists between physical activity and good health. The Institute is governed by its own Board of Trustees and remains administratively and financially independent from any other enterprise. Todd and Connie dicuss the upcoming luncheon Celebrating Generations of Wellness, honoring Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., M.P.H., Thursday April 29, 2010 at noon in the Khmer Pavilion, Hilton Anatole Hotel, Dallas. Guest speaker is Tom Brokaw.
