Today, I am blessed to have here with me Pauline Cox. She co-founded The Complete Health Clinic in 2004, a multi-disciplinary private health clinic with a vision of creating better access to healthcare and information. Apply to work one on one with Ben Azadi here: https://benazadi.typeform.com/to/SxcGTPuX?mc_cid=e3fb9ec4f0&mc_eid=a1d1281da5 In 2018 Pauline co-founded Sow & Arrow with a mission of creating easy-to-access information on health and wellbeing as well as a place to get convenient healthy food on the go. Sow & Arrow creates high quality, innovative, nutrient-dense food based on the grain-free, low carb ancestral diet. Sow & Arrow also supply high-quality supplements and exceptional products, often locally produced by Artisan makers. Pauline has a passion for teaching and runs regular workshops and health programs and speaking engagements to relay the latest news, information and research in the areas of health and wellbeing Primal Living in a Modern World is Pauline's first book and focuses on reversing chronic illness and optimizing health. In this episode, Pauline talks about how she started on her journey to health and why Pauline took a deep dive into nutrition. We talk about how conventional medicine is more ready to accept preventative health care ever since Covid. Plus, Pauline explains what dual-fuel burning means and why it can be a total game-changer for your health. It's incredible what the body can do when it is metabolically flexible. Tune in as we chat about retraining your hunger hormone, getting more collagen into your diet, and the importance of supporting your liver. [00:40] How Pauline Started Her Journey To Health and Wellbeing Many years ago, Pauline trained as a physical therapist. She kept seeing the same inflammatory-based conditions turning up. Terry Wahls inspired Pauline to look at nutrition at a much deeper level. Pauline loves to think about how nutrition can improve longevity and protect us against chronic disease. [07:20] Being More Preventative When It Comes To Covid We can improve our immune function and make it more robust and more reactive when it needs to be. At the start of the pandemic, there was a lot of skepticism around vitamin D and zinc. Plus, there was a lot of skepticism around supplements, food, and the impact of nutrition. Now, it seems to be much more readily accepted in the conventional medical community. [17:30] Dual-Fuel Burning: What It Means and How To Achieve It Ketones have been around for as long as we've been around as humans. We can burn two different types of fuel: ketones and glucose. It protects our body from essentially eating our muscles and ourselves to death if we go two or three days without food. Dual-fuel gives us the ability to go for long periods of time without food. We're carrying our own little refrigerator of food that we can access at any point. Dual-fuel keeps our mood stable. [21:00] It's Incredible That We Have A Metabolically Flexible Body Our brain is designed to be able to utilize glucose or ketones. However, the brain has a preference for ketones. If we eat some sweet potatoes, we will mop up that glucose and use it immediately. If you don't eat carbs, then you will utilize the fat stored in your body. Pauline will fast from 6 pm to lunchtime the next day. She loves to have a core level of ketones. We have a brain that's becoming increasingly insulin resistant. Millions and millions of individuals across the world are already insulin resistant. Pauline recommends reading Alzheimer's Disease: What If There Was a Cure?: The Story of Ketones: https://www.amazon.com/Alzheimers-Disease-There-Story-Ketones-ebook/dp/B01INM7KUE/benazadi-20 [26:20] How Long Does It Take To Retrain Your Hunger Hormone? Ghrelin spikes very predictably around when we usually eat. Our body will produce ghrelin, very predictably, at nine o'clock, in anticipation of us having our breakfast. Your ghrelin is trained to spike. If you want to eliminate breakfast, then you should start to shift your ghrelin. Start moving your eating times 45 minutes back. That way, you're training that ghrelin spike to ease off rather than stopping altogether slowly. It will be an easier transition. [32:35] About Pauline's Book Primal Living in a Modern World Get Primal Living in a Modern World: https://www.sowandarrow.com/product-page/primal-a-signed-first-edition-of-sow-arrows-ultimate-health Pauline wrote the book about eighteen months ago. Primal living is a blueprint; this step-by-step guide will teach you why we are sick, how to reverse and heal and how to safeguard you and your family's health. Pauline talks about how the foods we eat make us sick, inflamed, and fat. [36:25] The Importance of Getting More Collagen Into Your Diet We live in a modern world that can work against us. However, we also live in a modern world that can work for us. We live in a time where there are so many incredible products on the market. There's a collagen deficit in most people. So, we're not necessarily getting enough protein. Pauline says our guts cannot break down protein properly. Bone broth is one of the best sources of collagen. [43:15] The Best Way To Support Your Liver Fasting is a great way to support your liver. Also, eat a low-sugar diet. Pauline eats minimal sugars. The bile that the liver produces helps move along our bowel movements and allows for easy passage. If you aren't producing the bile, your bowels won't be working properly. We need to look after our livers at all times. Eggs are a great way to support your liver. AND MUCH MORE! There have been many of you waiting for this conversation and we were so stoked to make it happen! Andra Lapierre is here to get into it with Kaylor this week! Andre starts by sharing his story and his double life as businessman and bush man. He shares how he landed his dream, self proclaimed “wife out of his league” and the alignment with that relationship in his life. Andre is a genuine soul that shows up authentically and encourages others to do the same. He is bringing pure passion to this episode talking about the negative impact mandates have on people and how his social media content has helped people on the absolute verge and at the end of their rope. Kaylor and Andre discuss the power of social media and how it may just save us all. They both deeply agree on using the tool of social media to show up as our most authentic selves. Andre is also talking about his love for the bush, surviving in the wild, getting into nature and being primal, foraging and self-sustaining. This episode is such an amazing riff between two incredible, outspoken, successful people in their own right and you will draw an incredible amount of hope from this discussion. Listen to this one and let us know what you think! Guest Bio: His social media describes him as an adventurer, a seeker, and a bush-lover. There is so much more to the man though. He is also a successful entrepreneur, a proud father of four, and a grateful husband that managed to land a woman way out of his league. Andre fell in love with the bush long before he knew what a city was. He is constantly connecting with the incredible people in the bushcraft community, learning, and sharing every piece of knowledge and experience. Andre owns two custom HR firms and software companies in Toronto. He started an outdoor gear company called Big Bush company at the beginning of the “pandemic”. Andre is a freedom fighter and has no qualms about speaking the truth loudly and proudly. At the beginning of Covid Andre completed a 10 day hike through Alaska and half of it was done while fasting and in grizzly country. He climbed glaciers, drank from glaciers, hunted grizzlys, deep-sea fished and brought no food and no shelter and survived off what he caught. He hiked in the cold, slept in the rain and this was his test to see if his health, body and mind could make it. 90 Day Detox Program: http://www.ketokampdetox.com Order Keto Flex: http://www.ketoflexbook.com -------------------------------------------------------- / / E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. Gregory Koufacos is the author of the recently released book The Primal Method, which distills his approach to helping men of all ages, particularly young men, work with addiction, move past a place of stuckness or self-doubt and step wholeheartedly into life. He is a believer, and he's made me a believer, in the power of therapy rooted not just in talk, but rooted in action, in our bodies, in movement, and stepping into our natural born desire to live and grow.As Gregory tells it, every young man has been shown a future in our society that is deeply uninspiring at best and downright nihilistic at worse. In that context, it's no wonder that so many boys don't truly grow up to be men. So if there are any young men in your life who are struggling with purpose or identity, with what to live for or how to live for it, then this conversation will impact you. (And frankly, even if you're in your 40s, 50s, or beyond, if you're still feeling stuck or uncertain about those things, then this conversation is for you too!).The Wonder Dome Newsletter http://bit.ly/3dTfdPiFollow Andy on Twitter http://twitter.com/cahillaguerillaLike us on Facebook http://facebook.com/mindfulcreative.coachEPISODE #40 NOTESdavidwhyte.comlatahbooks.com/the-primal-methodsebastianjunger.com/tribe-by-sebastian-jungereternalprinciples.comvelocitymentoring.comlinkedin.com/in/gregory-m-koufacos-ma-lcadc-ncrc-21177531 twitter.com/theeternalwon
Hey monkiis, My guest today is the Wildman from Austin, Dude Spellings (@dudespellings). Dude not only has a rad name, but is a Primal Health Coach, Ultra Endurance Athlete, and health/wellness/fitness enthusiast. It's all about living a healthy, balanced life which lines up well with the #monkiimindset. I first heard Dude on the Primal Blueprint Podcast talk about his no-joke Microworkouts where he was accumulating up to 350 Pushups, 100 Pullups, 50 Jump Squats, 50 Deadlifts, and a 4-mile run throughout the course of the day. WHOA! It's important to note that he definitely ramped up to this volume in addition to the method in which he is spreading out the volume. He does NOT do everything at once but instead spreads the work over several hours where he is recovered between each 'set' and thus can do a huge amount a volume without it being overly exhaustive. From my time working in the Wild I find that this strategy seems to line up much more congruently with a primal model of movement vs. the 1-hour Bootcamp or class at the gym. It's not to say that these 1-hour sessions are not useful. Rather, it's important to think in a more nuanced way about training vs. movement and how you can get extreme health and performance benefits without breaking down your body. It's all about balance. Show notes: Dude's WebsiteDminder App If you have questions, please send a note to info@monkii.co or send us a DM to @monkii.co on Instagram we can get more monkii Q&A sessions going. We are advancing leaps and bounds technologically and finding ways to do “more” with less time, but are we compromising our well-being? Have we lost a sense of what nourishes our body and mind and truly makes us feel good? What do we really need to live well, be healthy and enjoy quality of life? It's time to take a step back, unplug and ask how we can maximize our health and quality of living without having to spend a fortune or sacrifice what we enjoy. A newly adopted lifestyle that many call 'Primal' simply means reconnecting with the earth, focusing on what it provides, and tapping in on certain 'primal' elements for optimal living. On today's very special episode, host Brian Klepacki sat down with Blake Bowman of Guerrillazen Fitness & Holistic Nutritionist Bryan Hardy and all things primal were discussed. From what to eat and drink when we wake up to how we approach exercise and our sleep. Steven Bennett is a serial entrepreneur, founder of Primal Living health products, and author of several books including Fat And Furious. We catch up with Steve after our first interview in Episode 4 of Enduring Health to find out what’s new, and talk about his latest book and podcast “Fat And Furious” devoted to supporting optimal health through natural means. KEY TAKEAWAYS Fat And Furious is a collaborative effort between Steve and numerous medical contributors, with the format seeing Steve asking questions of how to improve certain facets of his health, and the doctors giving multiple answers, so as to provide a real depth of knowledge. We should be eating the foods that our bodies were designed to eat. We should be moving and exercising in a consistent way with our body’s design. We can achieve optimal conditions for our bodies using the LEON method: L - Lifestyle - Ensuring we get enough sleep, rest, exercise. E - Environment - Reducing the amount of toxicity in our everyday surroundings. ON - Optimal Nutrition - Ensuring that our dietary intake is designed in accordance with our body’s natural needs. Science evolves at a breakneck speed. Findings that are accepted today may be outdated and refuted within a few years. As students of science, we must always be prepared to have our expectations confounded as more information is known. Incredibly, life expectancy has begun to fall. Subsequent generations are expected to live for ten years less than us. Steve credits this to a large-scale deception by big corporations. We have over 40 trillion human cells in our bodies, and each one has a cell membrane comprised of fatty acids that we cannot produce on our own. We need fats in order to exist. In order to save the human race, companies will have to change the root of what drives them. At present it’s money, but this is ultimately unsustainable. Consumers will eventually drive the key factors behind company growth. Ethical factors will be a selling point that soon becomes harder to ignore. Steve advocates a vegan and vegetarian diet, but only for the right reasons. If you choose to eat that way because of animal cruelty, then you are to be praised. If you are doing it because you believe that it will save the planet, he believes this to be wrong. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’m a bit annoyed because I had this idea myself!’ ‘We should be living a lifestyle that the body wants us to live’ ‘Follow the logic and not the money’ ‘I’m furious that the truth is so simple’ ‘Making money doesn’t have to be your key driver’ ‘I haven’t found a doctor yet who’s said that being a vegan is healthier’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Enduring Health Podcast www.patreon.com/enduringhealth Steve Bennett Twitter - https://twitter.com/thehealthdaddy?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Fat And Furious by Steve Bennett (Amazon) Fat And Furious Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/fat-furious/id1495158540 ABOUT THE HOST Dr. Shan Hussain is an author, general practitioner, health coach, wellness advisor and ambassador to the World Health Innovation Summit. Lets face it...while we have the same genetic recipe that we did 160,000 years ago, tho life is soooo different. In fact, for the amount of time we have been walking this planet, walking in these genes, we have only been in this modern day living environment for less than a percentage of 1 % of the time...and this is why its important for our health and well being to incorporate strategies that are aligned with our genetic recipe, to allow the good genes to switch on, and keep the bad genes switched off. In this short 7 minute episode I will talk about the role of managing selective pressures and natural rhythms

Rediscover Your Intuition Through Primal Living: Is our modern environment taking a too large of a toll on our physical, emotional, and mental health? Has the digital age led us to lose our primal intuition? JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST Are we relying on technology too much to the point that we need data to tell us whether or not we've slept well, exercised enough, or become relaxed? From a young age, health and fitness expert, author, and founder of both Primal Blueprint and Primal Kitchen, Mark Sisson of Mark's Daily Apple, has spent his life actively seeking information to help people live a long, healthy life. Today on Wellness Force Radio, he's sharing what it means to follow a primal life, an insight look into his upcoming book, Go Keto, and how to follow the Ten Guidelines of the Primal Blueprint Ethos. Just because there's an app for anything and everything, it doesn't mean that we have to solely rely on technology to help us improve our mind, body, and emotional wellness. After all, our primal ancestors never had to rely on an app to help them survive so why should we? As humans, it's in our nature to know, intuitively, exactly what we need. Whether it be nutrition, fitness, or sleep, our intuition knows what's best for us. Paleo f(x) In our modern and tech-focused society, this episode could not come at a better time. If you're like me, you've been using technology more and more every day for your wellness, health and fitness, and also online through social media to connect with people. But in this world of online likes, shares, and facebook friends as well as conscious health tracking through wearables, a bigger question arises: have we lost touch with our most primal selves, the part of us that intuitively knows exactly how to form real, face to face personal connections, and in our ways of eating, moving, and sleeping for a life of wellness? Today on the podcast, we're answering these questions and learning about how to create and sustain a primal lifestyle in this modern world from health and fitness expert, Mark Sisson. Get ready for an in-depth and thought-provoking conversation with one of the most popular and profound influencers in our wellness world where we dive into topics like carbohydrate intake, fat adaptation, gene signaling and epigenetics, as well as Mark's personal ethos and story about how he overcame his own health issues to found Mark's Daily Apple, Primal Blueprint, and Primal Kitchen. Listen to Episode 112 as Mark Uncovers: Mark's journey and mission to live a healthy life from an early age. Why Mark began to eat a high-complex carbohydrate diet based on the books he was reading around the late 1960s, early 1970s and how that negatively affected his body. How our own, personal intuition can help us create a sense of where our health needs to be at. What skills we can use to help us curb our triggers to not over-eat when there is an abundance of food, but we're not even that hungry. How we know whether or not we're following the primal living path. The benefit of primal living and listening to our intuition compared to the guilt we can feel from app data results. Why 'good' and 'bad' genes are a myth. How inflammation can actually be a good thing for our bodies sometimes. Great workouts to do on the go when you have long working hours or are traveling. As Mark explains, wellness is about having a positive mindset and living in the moment. When we stop focusing on the past, we can fully feel contentment and joy. The benefits and facts around Primal, Paleo, Keto, and intermittent fasting. There is no such thing as 'bad' or 'good' genetics. Our genetics are turned on or off by different variables in order to help our bodies survive. Power Quotes From Mark Sisson [tweetthis] "Primal living allows you to develop the skills you need to get in touch with your body and emotions." - @Mark_Sisson [/tweetthis] "I may have looked fit on the outside, but I was falling apart in the inside. There was this inflammation that was gathering and building inside my body. I had osteoarthritis in my feet, tendinitis in my hips, and even irritable bowl syndrome (IBS) which pretty much dictated my life. I began this diet to be healthy, but all of a sudden, I was at the unhealthiest point of my life. I had no idea about what was going with my body." - Mark Sisson on his personal experience with the negative impact of following high complex carbohydrate diet. "It fascinates me that there are now 35 different wearable devices that tell you how poorly you slept last night, but there's nothing out there to really address the problem. I try to create an intuitive sense about my body's needs and I try to coach people to do the same." - Mark Sisson on the power of intuitive sense to help us understand our minds and bodies to make beneficial changes for our health. "Primal living means that you've dialed into several different aspects of your life so that you don't have to stop and ask a device, "What do I do now?" You get to the point when you know what to do and what choices to make. Your intuitive decision making process is going to serve you in that moment and in the best way possible." - Mark Sisson on what primal living means and how our intuitive sense can help us make the best decisions about our health. "Primal living allows you to develop the skills you need to be in touch with your body, emotions, and everything that draws us in to enjoy life." - Mark Sisson on the benefits of primal living. "I don't want to ascribe genes as being 'good' or 'bad.' Genes are just doing what they're told to do. When you develop Type 2 Diabetes, that's not because of 'bad genetics. That happens because your human genes are addressing a problem that you've created with your eating and moving habits. Your body is just trying to prevent you from dying too soon from too much sugar." - Mark Sisson on why we shouldn't categorize genes as being 'good' or 'bad.' "The Paleo and Primal diets are converging. Initially, the Paleo Diet was only a diet that looked at no dairy, alcohol, very low unsaturated fats, and was fairly restrictive. When I came up with the Primal Blueprint, I wanted to create a place where people could go and not feel excluded, but invited. So we included as many foods that made sense so we don't exclude dairy like cream, butter, artisanal cheese, and even whole milk for some people. Paleo has always been about the diet, but Primal includes the entire lifestyle." - Mark Sisson on the difference between the Primal Blueprint and Paleo Diets and lifestyles. "Thoughts are just thoughts and they're not reality. What we worry or agonize about only exists in our minds as imagination. My wife, Carrie, keeps reminding me that when I let those thoughts dictate how I feel in the present moment, they actually take me out of the present moment." - Mark Sisson on what he's learned from his wife, Carrie, about emotional wellness and intelligence. "Wellness is more of a state of mind than a physical presence. Wellness is this feeling of serenity and peace, but also the ability to not be caught up in feelings of worry, anger, or angst. Wellness is not about re-thinking about previous decisions or past mistakes. It's about being in the present moment and therefore being able to extract the greatest amount of contentment, joy, and fulfillment from now." - Mark Sisson on what wellness means to him. Legendary Life | Transform Your Body, Upgrade Your Health & Live Your Best Life
Roughly one in three American adults is obese. Two out of every three adults are overweight. Why are we so fat? What is it about our modern lifestyle that is causing this epidemic? In this special episode, our guest, Keith Norris, will explain the root cause of our obesity epidemic and how ancestral health can help you overcome this and other diseases. He also shares how to use an “evolutionary lens” on other areas of your life to guide you towards living a life of passion and purpose. Listen to this episode and get ready to go Paleo and eat like a caveman. Brief Bio: In today’s episode, Ted interviews Keith Norris, the co-founder of Paleo f(x)—the largest Paleo convention in the world. He made his transition from corporate America to following his passion of inspiring people to live healthier lives using ancestral health. In this session, Keith shared the more personal aspects of his life and journey from being an athlete, a veteran, and working in a Big Pharma to finally achieving success with Paleo f(x) and his gym business Efficient Exercise. He is also a blogger and has a manufacturing company that produces some proprietary exercise equipment. Moreover, he emphasized that the thrust of the whole conference is not just health but addresses the mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, financial and relational health that truly makes human beings thrive. He also talks about the false economy that is created when “healthcare” is about profiting from a sick and unhealthy population. You’ll learn how to break the bonds that are keeping you stuck in an overstressed, unhealthy modern lifestyle to living how the human body was designed to with Ancestral Health practices. In this episode, you’ll learn: How did he go from strength and conditioning coach to Paleo advocate (04:32) His big pharmaceutical industry experience (11:51) What is holistic health and why it’s important (14:28) Why are we so fat (21:55) What motivated him to create the Paleo f(x) event (26:56) How Paleo Diet and Primal Living can affect your life (35:24) 5 Things you should know about stress and your health (42:26) Why we get sick (59:23) 3 Pieces of advice for all Millennials (01:03:04) The biggest reason why you should go to Paleo F(x) (01:10:08) Connect with Keith: Ted’s Take-Aways 1. How our social networks have such a profound influence on us. If you’re hanging around with people who don’t aspire to, then don’t be surprised if you’re unable to get ahead in life and achieve the goals you set for yourself. You need to get around people who inspire you, who motivate you, who share the same types of goals. Do you have a strong support group? It doesn’t have to be an online entrepreneur or meet up group unless that’s the area you’re in. Maybe it can be a church group for you, some type of a workout group or a public speaking group like Toastmasters. Just make sure you get around people who are pushing you forward and support you. There is nothing worse than getting motivated but feeling like the people in your life hold you back. 2. The evolutionary perspective is about understanding how human beings are wired. Whether you believe in the theory of evolution or not, human beings come pre-programmed. For example, you need to breathe air, drink water, eat food, move your body, sleep and more to be healthy. There’s no getting around those facts. But if you think that those are the only things you need to be happy then you should look a little deeper. There’s even research showing how negative people in our lives bring us down—even if you’re mostly surrounded by positive people. And there’s never going to be a time where you’re going to be able to thrive around negative people. Start using an evolutionary lens on other areas of your life and not just the health and fitness parts. You don’t always need to live like a caveman, but learning the rules of what makes a human being thrive physically, mentally and emotionally can make it more clear what you need to do to level up your life from where you are now. By now, you've no doubt heard of CRISPR, the latest gene-editing tool sweeping research labs across the globe. It was first discovered in certain strains of bacteria, who use it as an important weapon against dangerous viruses. In bacteria, CRISPR identifies a virus that poses a threat, records the virus' genetic data and imprints it onto RNA molecules. An immune enzyme called Cas9 grabs one of the RNA molecules and goes exploring. When Cas9 encounters a virus that matches the data on the RNA molecule, it latches on and slices the virus in half to prevent it from replicating and posing any threat. Eat well, Live Well. It's that simple - Rohan Anderson 180 Nutrition Our fantastic guest today is Rohan Anderson. A few years ago he created Whole Larder Love which began as an online journal, documenting the story of a life change. A significant life change for a regular person embedded in western society. Rohan had a metamorphosis driven by a desire to alter his food and lifestyle choices. At the beginning, he was very unhealthy. Obesity, food allergy, anxiety, depression and hyper-tension where all part of daily reality (most of which he was medicated for). His health concerns, a growing understanding of his environmental impact and the responsibility of being a parent, where catalysts nudging him to make deliberate change. Today's podcast is all about change. How we truly do have the power within us to change if we truly want it, and how the small changes can make a huge difference over time in our lives and others. Be inspired and enjoy! In This Episode: How he overcame obesity, hypertension, anxiety, depression Making the switch from corporate world to rural life Why he had to go through a great deal of pain before making huge changes Why building his log cabin has been the most rewarding thing he has ever done :) Rohan's favourite & most influential books: - Western Novels by Louis L'Amour - The Unprejudiced Palate by Angelo M. Pellegrini And much much more... Take the Quiz & Discover Your #1 Health & Weight Loss Road Block Here: http://bit.ly/1Nkr4RE Transcript Hey, this is Guy Lawrence with 180 Nutrition and welcome to today’s Health Sessions. I’ve come to the conclusion over the years that everyone’s journey when it comes to health, food and nutrition and exercise it’s almost like a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum I guess you could say you’ve got people that have never made the food-health connection before. Don’t really look at what they’re eating, if they’re eating processed carbohydrates, if it’s affecting their gut health and all sorts of things going on. Actually for them literally it’s not buying some fast food and eating a bowl of edge instead. It could be a major challenge and then at the other end of the spectrum you got people that have been making tremendous amount of change over the years and forever evolving and learning. The one thing I’ve come to conclusion is to always keep a beginners mind and I try and have that approach when it comes to health nutrition and pretty much anything in life. I only say these things because today’s guest, who I think is absolutely awesome, just a wonderful human being is Rohan Anderson. It’s safe to say he shares his journey today, which is being that full spectrum. He was that guy who was earning lots of money, corporate world, but very unhappy. He was clinically diagnosed obese. He said he had food allergies, anxiety, depression, hypertension. They were all parts of the daily reality and most of them which were medicated for as well. He just simply wasn’t happy. Over the years he’s been evolving and making changes up to this point now where we have him on the podcast [00:02:00] today. He’s releasing a second health book which is called ‘A Year of Practiculture’. My copy is in the mail as I write this, because I’m very excited to get it because it’s full of stories and even recipes from a year of living a self-reliant lifestyle. From going to being that guy, obese corporate to now becoming a self-sufficient person. Which that’s growing, hunting forage and healthy sustainable foods off the land. We are actually opted to record this podcast in audio only and not the usual video as well, because he’s in a very remote part of Victoria. We just wanted to make sure the sound quality was top notch. In his own words as well he said, you could scream until he was blue in the face when he was that guy back when he was obese. He had to find the changes for himself. I know I can certainly relate that on my own journey when I think of certain family and friends. No matter what I say or do I don’t really change. I’ve come to the conclusion that you can just lead by example. When people are ready to change they’ll make the change and start asking you questions and so forth. Obviously you can direct them then to podcasts like this. The one thing I have been finding helpful you might have heard me say on a couple of a few podcasts ago that we actually did a survey and we designed a quiz around that on people’s number 1 problems. Generally it’s normally revolving around weight loss. We look at these things from a very physical aspect and then as we start to change we then look deeper into it and then we really start to embrace the health changes. If you are struggling with trying to get people over the line to make them look at their diet a little bit or their health, this is actually a great place to start. You [00:04:00] could send them back to 180nutrition.com and 180nutrition.com.au and there will be a button there saying, “Take the quiz” and that’s a great place to start. That’s designed for somebody that really hasn’t started their health journey yet. There’s a good video and there’s actually a really good introductory offer to help support people that want to make the change for the first time. If you’re struggling and telling yourselves, you can use that to tell them for you. Take the quiz back at 180nutrition.com and .com.au. Anyway let’s go over to Rohan. This is a really fantastic podcast. Enjoy! Hi. This is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined with Stuart Cooke. Hi Stu. Stuart: Hello mate. Guy: Our awesome guest today is Rohan Anderson. Rohan, welcome to the show. Rohan: Nice. Thanks for having me. Guy: Just to put our listeners into the picture mate. We all met at the Primal Living talk last year in Tasmania, which I think now is over a year ago, so wow, time really flies.I remember watching your talk mate and just absolutely being blown away by it and with your message, the story, the humor, the heartfelt-ness from it and it was absolutely fantastic. Believe it or not I’ve gone on and done a couple of talks since. I always take inspiration from that day Rohan. We’re very honoured to have you on the show today and looking forward to getting a little bit to know more about you and share with our listeners. It’s greatly appreciated mate. Rohan: All right. Guy: To start the show Rohan, would you mind just sharing a little bit about your story and the life changes you’ve made before you got on to a whole lot of love, just to give people a bit of a background. Rohan: Yeah. It’s probably quite familiar to a lot of people. Middle class Australian working my ass off trying to earn as much money as possible to pay off [00:06:00] mortgages and car loans and credit cards. I ended up working about 6 days a week in a couple of different jobs and focusing on values in life that I thought were important. What took a back seat was the things that are important, which are family, health, experiences. My body was a reflection of the way my life was. At that point in time I was morbidly obese. I had a whole range of different health issues and fairly common health issues that a lot of Australians have. I had hypertension, anxiety, depression, I had food allergies. Like I said before, I was disgustingly obese. I can say that, I was an absolute fatty. What happened was there was a couple of different catalysts that made me look at my life, evaluate it and say, “I need to make some …” I realized I need to make some changes.I think having kids and the realization that I was feeding my kids the same shit food that I was eating, gave me a large amount of guilt. That hitched out at me to want to make changes in what I was feeding my kids and then I was asking myself “Well, I want to feed my kids healthy foods and I should be feeding myself healthy foods.” Then I started to do some trial journey of moving away from foods like chicken nuggets and takeaway foods and urban fries and moving into looking at cooking with whole foods, really, really basic stuff. Looking at cook books to begin with and actually cooking with ingredients as opposed to opening up a jar of tomato sauce and pouring over some pasta. Then eventually [00:08:00] I took extra steps and started looking for organic produce, chemical free produce, local produce and in turn the more local the product the more seasoned it is, the more [inaudible 00:08:12]. Then from there I took an even one more further step and I started growing most of my own food. For my meat I became a hunter. Guy: How long ago was this Rohan? Rohan: I really don’t know. It’s been such a long journey now. I would say it’s probably … I do know I started writing a whole lot about 2009. I had previous to that attempted to integrate some of these stuff into my life, especially the growing of the vegetables. It was in the back of my mind, it was more of a hobby. I didn’t take it as seriously as I do now. Although even though I do take it seriously there’s quite a lot of farming. Stuart: What was it Rohan that led you to explore that avenue as opposed to doing what most people would do in the modern world. They’d join perhaps Jenny Craig and go to the doctors and get some pills. Rohan: I did both of those things. This is why it’s important to share my story, because I’m the same as everybody else, I just found a different solution for me. Everybody’s solution is going to be different. Initially I was about to take a flight to London many, many years ago. I went to my doctor and I said, “Look. Can I get some Valium? Because I’m not a very good [inaudible 00:09:43] my first long whole flight and sometimes I get a bit of anxiety.” He said, “Tell me more.” He sat me down. It was like going to see a shrink. By the end of the session I was folding my eyes telling, basically admitting that I’ve been having these attacks for pretty much [00:10:00] in my entire adult life. He diagnosed me with anxiety and depression and I had all these tiredness issues and I was manic at times and all those sorts of things.Straight away I was diagnosed with some symptoms and then I was medicated for. The same happened for hypertension with my very high blood pressure. You’ve got hypertension, you need to take these tablets. That was my first step. Now that I look back at it, I think that’s great because what happened there was the medication gave me the ability to get some level ground and to find some peace and some consistency in my daily routine. Because prior to being medicated I was about to go nuts. The other thing that I would mention as well is my wife convinced me to go Weight Watchers. I went to Weight Watchers and that was a great experience. It was very similar to an experience I had going to Alcoholic Anonymous. The system that those guys have it’s so technical, it focuses on counting all these calories and grams and fats and bits of sugar. The amazing thing was that they told me. I said, “You should have a can of baked beans for breakfast.” Here I am having baked beans in newsletter. I was only [inaudible 00:11:20] sugar. The point I’m trying to make is that the health profession is very, very quick to jump on the medication band wagon. I think there’s some value in that but there also should be value in looking at addressing the reasons why us western humans are in such a shit state in the first place. Maybe to address, “Okay. Why did I work 6 days a week and want to earn so much money to buy stuff that I didn’t need?” Well, that’s because that’s what a middle class [00:12:00] western society expectations are. That’s the value that we put on ourselves and that’s the pressure that we put on ourselves. Our health reflects that. We all work really hard and one could build [inaudible 00:12:11] everyone has got loans and credit cards and it’s so easy to get credit. Everyone is under pressure. All that pressure puts us and our health under pressure. Then we want these quick fixes to fix our health as opposed to addressing what we really need to do, which is a little bit of exercise and also eating real foods. I heard the other day that the bestselling cook book at the moment is a green smoothie cook book. The problem with that is it’s the quick fix rubbish. In this week's episode, we talk to Mark Sisson, author of The Primal Blueprint. Mark argues that what we know about health and fitness is wrong and that we should actually be taking our cues from cavemen. We discuss how men can start living the primal lifestyle today and begin the path towards better health.
