Angela talks to health and fitness legend Mark Sisson, a pivotal figure in the ancestral health movement for over two decades. They discuss the critical components of longevity, focussing upon the importance of balance, nutrition, and movement, particularly walking. Mark shares insights from his new book, "Born to Walk," highlighting how walking can be a more effective and sustainable exercise strategy compared to running, especially for those looking to improve their health and energy levels. KEY TAKEAWAYS Walking for Longevity and Health: Walking is a fundamental human activity, supporting balance, digestion, lymphatic health, and mental well-being. Barefoot Movement: Minimalist shoes or barefoot walking enhances balance, proprioception, and foot health, aligning with the body's natural biomechanics. Diet and Metabolic Flexibility: Centering meals around protein and achieving metabolic flexibility through lower-carb diets supports energy and fat burning. Importance of Collagen: Collagen supports joint health, skin elasticity, and overall recovery, making it a crucial supplement for active individuals. Work Smarter, Not Harder: Prioritizing health, creativity, and energy leads to better performance, even for entrepreneurs balancing busy lives. Welcome to the first of a multi-part series where I cover brief and not-so-brief highlights from many of my favorite podcast guests, starting with Dave Rossi, who offers an invaluable perspective on redirecting your thoughts and actions when you experience stress, as well as some parenting tips. You'll hear some more parenting tips from Ashley Merryman, like the importance of emphasizing and praising effort made toward improvement, and truly fantastic advice from Thais Gibson to help you overcome self-sabotage. I've also included some of my favorite clips of Dr. John DeMartini talking about following your inspired purpose and from Dain Heer on formulating a healthy perspective. You will also learn how thoughts manifest cellular function from Bruce Lipton and how to overcome dopamine addiction with Dr. Anna Lembke. Finally, Luke Storey teaches us about manifestation and Don Goewey discusses self-awareness. Some of these personal growth insights are quite short and some are more lengthy, but what they all have in common is their wisdom and ability to stay with you and help you improve your life. TIMESTAMPS: As Brad shares some of his favorite excerpts from some of his many podcasts. He firsts asks “Should I be doing this right now?” (Dave Rossi) [01:57] About parenting, Rossi says, “When talking to the kids, have good eye contact and constant affirmations of love and support.” [03:15] It is not necessary to praise the child for athletic ability, beauty, or smarts, it can sometimes be detrimental to their self-esteem. [08:05] Be honest with your feedback. Praise the effort toward improvement. [11:36] Thais Gibson used Brad as a subject by which she could describe her work as a personal growth expert. When there is a conflict between your goals and behaviors, that is the definition of self-sabotage [14:12] Manifestation usually does not work because our mindset cuts us off from the potential power that it might have. {20:52] Don Goewey describes a four-step process to become more self-aware and well-adjusted. [24:39] What do you do spontaneously every day that requires no motivation and brings you joy and fulfillment and makes a positive contribution to the world? [27:16] If you don't empower your life, other people will overpower you. [33:54] When you get frustrated, ask yourself a question. Who does this belong to? [34:45] Bruce Lipton believes that our thoughts affect the cellular function in our bodies at all times. The messages we get in the first seven years of life continue on into our adult subconscious. [40:20] When you change your thoughts, you can change your energy level and interest in your situation. [47:37] There are three ways to reprogram your subconscious and change your life. [49:11] The powerful pull of hyperconnectivity has landed just about everyone in the category of addiction. [52:54] The routine things you do in daily life can take on epic proportions, but it doesn't mean you have to get to the top of the mountain. I am joined by Mark Sisson for the wonderful occasion of a new book coming out—Born To Walk. Tune in to hear us talk all about the book, from the title to what made Mark realize that this story had to be told, what the research about running has actually revealed, and why running is, in many cases, antithetical to good health for a lot of people. You'll hear us talk about the fascinating research we discovered that supports this idea that humans were born to walk, and while we are able to run (and can run occasionally as a result of walking a lot, sprinting once in a while, lifting heavy things, moving around and moving through space and time), we were not born to run metronomic eight-minute miles every day, day in and day out as some means to achieving some longevity goal or some health goal. As you will learn in this episode, the running boom of the last 50 years was built upon a House of Cards, and on the idea that humans are born to run. But, humans were not born to run—we were born to walk, and in this episode, you will find out why! TIMESTAMPS: We are looking at increasing your longevity through low level aerobic activity. {00:48] The idea that running was the best route to longevity has been downplayed. [05:56] Shoes have made big changes in the way people run. With the thick soled running shoes, there has been no decrease in running injuries. [08:03] Everybody assumes that running is the sort of gold standard of weight loss, of achieving good health, of mental fortitude, and being able to overcome discomfort. [14:32] What is so appealing about a marathon? [16:47] There are much kinder, gentler ways to achieve great health, not get injured and support the other things that you're doing as part of your longevity program. [21:10] Why doesn't running and burning calories work in pursuit of reducing excess body fat? [22:27] There are two kinds of fat. The subcutaneous fat which is simply unpleasant and the visceral fat which is terribly harmful for your health. [24:51] They promised better results with new cushioned shoes but these shoes have done nothing to decrease injury. [27:21] Understanding chronic cardio is so important in the endurance scene. You can take a good thing too far. [36:52] Mark had to change the way he pursued his athletic life. After retiring from elite competition, how did he learn to train at a lower level? [45:09] The Ordeal of the Obligate Runner is the title of one of the chapters. What does that mean? [48:31] What is the difference between being a sugar burner and a fat burner? [56:54] There is research showing that if you just have a lighter shoe, you save four minutes over a marathon. [01:02:36] We encourage you to walk but you need to learn the proper form. [01:07:06] What is the primal approach for getting more energy? You don't need to run to give yourself immortality [01:18:27] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com Brad's Shopping page B.rad Whey Protein Isolate Superfuel - The Best Protein on The Planet! How about a quick overview of the 10 magnificent Primal Blueprint lifestyle laws? In this episode, you'll hear an overview of the first five. The Primal Blueprint lifestyle was first introduced to the world by Mark Sisson back in 2005 on MarksDailyApple.com and then later in the best-selling book, 2009's The Primal Blueprint, which is credited with kickstarting the Primal lifestyle movement, which is going strong today. Mark and I are so pleased to still see the book in the best-seller category, and still the best entry point of a comprehensive education on how to live an ancestral-inspired, long, healthy active life modeling and adapting the lifestyle behaviors of our hunter-gatherer homo sapiens ancestors into the reality of crazy, hectic modern life. [09:20] Karen's Menopausal Odyssey: A Rapid Onset, Unusual Timeline, and the Role of Thyroid Medication - Karen experienced a sudden and intense onset of menopausal symptoms within a six-month period. This included a significant increase in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to menopausal levels, a drop in estrogen and progesterone, as well as other symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain in the stomach area, itchy skin, and breast tenderness. - Her experience of going through menopause deviated from the typical timeline. Instead of the gradual progression over 10 years of perimenopause followed by a couple of years of more intense symptoms, Karen's symptoms intensified rapidly, leading to a quicker transition into menopause. - Karen discovered that the thyroid medication she was taking played a role in exacerbating her hormonal imbalance. - Luckily, Karen successfully reversed some of the adverse effects of early menopause by implementing changes in her lifestyle and incorporating hormone replacement therapy. [15:20] Dietary Challenges and Hormonal Harmony - Karen observed issues arising from a prolonged and intense adherence to hardcore keto diets among her clients, as well as in her own experience. Problems included menstrual irregularities, hair loss, and weight regain. Individuals were resorting to more extreme measures like extended fasting and carnivore diets in an attempt to address these challenges. - Initially, the hardcore keto approach appeared to yield positive results, with clients experiencing improved energy levels, weight loss, and relief from menopausal symptoms. However, over the long term, these benefits diminished, prompting Karen to investigate the impact on the thyroid and other hormonal systems. - Karen emphasizes the importance of understanding the body's response to dietary signals, particularly in the context of signaling abundance or scarcity. - Karen advocates for the Keto Flex approach, incorporating carbohydrate intake a few days a week to signal abundance and support reproductive functions. [21:35] Optimizing Protein Intake: Recommendations for Weightlifters and Non-Lifters, Daily Distribution, and Whole-Food Emphasis - Karen suggests adjusting protein intake based on whether an individual engages in weightlifting. For those not lifting weights, she recommends a slightly lower protein intake, around 0.5 to 0.8 grams per pound of body weight. - However, for those involved in weightlifting, she recommends aiming for the standard guideline of 1 gram per pound of ideal body weight. - Karen emphasizes the importance of distributing protein intake throughout the day. Ideally, individuals should aim for 30 to 35 grams of protein per meal. - While acknowledging that many women may need to supplement their protein intake with shakes or essential amino acids, Karen emphasizes the preference for obtaining protein from whole food sources rather than relying solely on supplements. [23:05] Navigating Hormonal Health: Baseline Assessment, Sensitivity Variations, and Proactive Intervention in Perimenopause - Karen emphasizes the importance of getting a baseline of hormones, especially during the fertile years in one's 30s. - Different individuals have varying sensitivities to hormones, and what is considered normal or within the range may differ from person to person. - Perimenopause typically begins between the ages of 35 and 40, marked by a decline in progesterone due to less frequent ovulation. Karen advises paying attention to subtle signs, such as weight gain, worsening periods, insomnia, or other symptoms emerging in the late 30s. Proactive intervention during this phase is recommended. - Waiting until significant symptoms manifest may complicate treatment. Unfortunately, Karen notes that many doctors may be reluctant to address hormonal issues until a woman is in menopause, and finding a doctor willing to provide appropriate treatment with bioidentical hormones can be challenging. [37:05] Reverse T3, Testing Challenges, and the Impact of Heavy Metal Toxicity - Karen stresses the importance of testing for reverse T3, a thyroid hormone that is often overlooked by doctors. - She notes that obtaining reverse T3 testing can be challenging in some regions, such as Canada, where it may need to be sent to a lab in California. Doctors may not routinely order this test, so individuals are encouraged to advocate for their health by requesting and even paying for the test themselves. - Karen explains that a crucial aspect of thyroid health is the relationship between free T4 and free T3. - Lastly, Karen shares her personal experience of heavy metal toxicity affecting her thyroid health. [42:55] Proactive Hormonal Health: Early Intervention, Supplements, and the Role of Hormone Replacement in Preventing Decline-Related Diseases - Karen emphasizes the importance of addressing hormonal imbalances proactively and early, especially before the onset of severe symptoms. - Hormones play a crucial role beyond reproduction, influencing the function of organs throughout the body. - Catching hormonal imbalances early can prevent the development of diseases associated with hormonal decline. - During the late 30s and early 40s, when ovarian function starts to decline, Karen recommends certain supplements and lifestyle changes to support hormone production for a longer duration. - Karen highlights that replacing hormones becomes a crucial option when natural hormone production declines. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Mark Sisson. Health and fitness expert Mark Sisson is the New York Times bestselling author of The Keto Reset Diet and founding father of the ancestral health movement. His blog, MarksDailyApple.com, and Primal Blueprint lifestyle program has paved the way for primal enthusiasts to challenge conventional wisdom's diet and exercise principles and take personal responsibility for their health and well-being. From its humble - and controversial - beginnings in 2006, Mark's Daily Apple has grown into one of the highest-ranked health information resources on the Internet, with some three million unique visitors each month. An entrepreneur presiding over a wide-ranging primal enterprise, his fledgling Primal Kitchen healthy condiment line was acquired by Kraft-Heinz in 2018. Mark has a BA in biology from Williams College and is a former world-class endurance athlete, with a 2:18 marathon and a fourth-place finish in the Hawaii Ironman World Triathlon Championships to his credit. Today, Mark directs his competitive energies into high-stakes Ultimate Frisbee tournaments against competitors decades younger on the battlefields of Miami Beach, FL. This comprehensive episode dives into various aspects of metabolic flexibility, ketogenic diets, the impact of diet on health, and the concept of hormesis. The journey begins with exploring the factors behind metabolic inflexibility in the United States, focusing on the shift towards a carb-heavy diet and its consequences, including elevated insulin levels and reliance on glucose for energy. Mark highlights the strategic use of keto programs for athletes and individuals looking to reset their metabolism. Mark also emphasizes the significant benefits of adopting a ketogenic approach in both training and dieting, showcasing how a well-structured program can yield remarkable results within three to six weeks. Rediscovering the power of walking is another crucial topic we touch on, emphasizing that human bodies are naturally designed for movement. Overall, this podcast offers a holistic view of metabolic flexibility, ketogenic diets, exercise practices, and the role of short-term stressors in promoting long-term health and adaptation. [01:30] Exploring the Factors Behind Metabolic Inflexibility in the United States - The shift in the American diet towards a grain-based, carbohydrate-heavy intake, largely driven by the recommendations of the US Department of Agriculture for 6 to 11 servings of grains daily, has led to a predominance of carbohydrate consumption. This constant influx of carbs can inhibit the body's ability to burn fat for energy. - Excessive sugar intake leads to elevated insulin levels, which can lock fat into fat cells and hinder the body's capacity to switch to using ketones for energy. - High carb intake leads to spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. This cycle perpetuates itself as higher insulin levels inhibit fat burning, and the brain becomes reliant on glucose, making it challenging to switch to ketones as an energy source. - Many individuals are trapped in this carb-dependent cycle due to a lack of knowledge about how the body's metabolism functions. [13:55] The Impact of a Strategic Keto Program for Athletes and Beyond - Keto is a valuable tool for resetting your metabolism, typically over a strategic three to six-week program, especially when you're significantly out of balance. - Athletes who adopt a ketogenic approach to both training and dieting can achieve about 80% of their desired results within the first six weeks. However, the remaining 20% of results may take an additional two years to attain, making some athletes hesitant to embrace this approach. - In general, most people tend to respond positively to a ketogenic diet within three to six weeks. During this period, it's essential to monitor your progress through blood work. - While daily carbohydrate needs can vary for top competitive athletes, for most reasonably healthy and fit individuals, an upper limit of 150 grams of carbs per day is suggested to replenish glycogen stores. [21:30] The Power of Metabolic Flexibility and Streamlined Energy Utilization - Achieving metabolic flexibility comes with metabolic efficiency, meaning the body becomes highly efficient at extracting energy from various substrates. The efficiency is enhanced when the gut biome is healthy and can adequately digest food, preventing the wastage of calories. - Human bodies have evolved to store excess calories efficiently as fuel. This mechanism is designed to cope with periods of food scarcity. Excess calories are stored in convenient locations, particularly around the central gravity of the body, such as the belly, hips, thighs, and buttocks. - Metabolically flexible individuals experience a protein-sparing effect, where amino acids are recirculated rather than being converted to glucose. - Metabolically flexible individuals often require fewer calories than expected for optimal functioning. By focusing on a balanced diet with adequate protein, minimal carbohydrates, and moderate fat intake, one can maintain health and vitality without the need for excessive calorie consumption. [32:45] Feeling the Power of Keto-Adaptation: Mental Clarity, Stress, and Cognitive Efficiency - The primary indicator of becoming keto-adapted or achieving metabolic flexibility is how you feel. Paying attention to mental clarity, improved cognitive function, and overall well-being is crucial. - Ketosis is often associated with stress on the body. While many individuals measure and brag about high ketone levels, especially in the early days of adopting a ketogenic diet, more seasoned practitioners may not exhibit high ketone levels. - In the absence of glucose, muscles can initially use ketones for energy. However, when you become fully metabolically flexible and keto-adapted, the muscles prioritize glucose and fatty acids as their primary fuel sources, allowing ketones to be reserved for the brain. - As the body becomes more efficient at utilizing ketones, it is the brain that primarily relies on them, allowing for enhanced cognitive function and maintaining energy levels during periods of low food intake. [45:30] Rediscovering the Power of Walking: A Foundational Practice for Health and Balance - Human bodies are designed for movement, and walking is a fundamental activity that aligns with our natural physiology. Our ancestors spent millions of years walking across various terrains, which was essential for survival. - Walking is a highly beneficial form of exercise, particularly for individuals who are overweight or seeking weight loss. Running can be more challenging for those who haven't adapted to burning fats efficiently. - Running as a primary means of weight loss can have downsides for many individuals. It can deplete carbohydrate stores quickly, leading to increased hunger and a greater risk of muscle loss. - Walking should be a foundational practice for everyone, promoting balance, metabolic efficiency, and overall well-being. [01:01:30] Hormesis: Using Short-Term Stress for Long-Term Health Gains - Hormesis is the concept of introducing short-term stressors to the body, which can be beneficial for overall health and adaptation. - Hormetic effects vary depending on the context and timing. For example, a workout intentionally induces inflammation to prompt the body to respond by getting stronger over time. - Cold plunging can have a hormetic effect, such as the activation of brown fat or an anti-inflammatory response. However, the timing and context matter. Before a workout, it might not be ideal. - Initially, cold plunging can be a mental challenge, but with practice and a change in perspective, individuals can overcome their fear of cold water and experience the benefits.
