Lightly recruited out of High School, Aaron Rodgers received zero scholarship offers. Nevertheless, in one season and Butte Community College and another two at California, the strong-armed signal-caller appeared to be destined to be the first player selected in the 2005 NFL Draft. Rodgers the proceeded to fall to the Green Bay Packers at 24 overall & immediately became the backup and eventual successor to the legendary Brett Favre. Rodgers assumed the starting role in 2008 and then enjoyed one of the finest careers for a quarterback in NFL history. From 2008-2022, Rodgers started 223 games for Green Bay. Over this span, he threw for 5,8726 yards, 474 touchdowns, won four MVPs, a Super Bowl title (MVP of Super Bowl XLV) and made 10 Pro Bowls. Rodgers was then traded to the New York Jets where he lost his first season to an Achilles injury and is struggling through his second. Never someone to not make his opinion on certain issues known, Rodgers has been in the media for off-field statements and controversies. Despite the late career swoon, Rodgers is a future Hall of Famer and could be in the argument of one of the greatest players in NFL history. Connect with us on Instagram! He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021, his first year on the ballot, and enshrined in Canton that August.  Ryan starts the conversation off by quoting Charles on an important message that he shared during his Hall of Fame speech, and asking the significance of the line, "They say a woman can't raise a man, I call bullcrap, because my mom raised two men." Charles shares why it was important for him to put that message out to the world and let him serve as proof that strong men can be raised in single mother households and talks about his own experience of being raised by his mother and how his work ethic and his will to never give up is all from watching his mom and the values she instilled in him. As hard as the NFL is and as many ups and downs, injuries, bad days and the days that make you want to walk away, Charles always remained grounded by his mother's efforts and life approach which he used to sustain his own success. Channing doesn't miss a moment in poking a little fun at Charles' singing comparing him to Demarcus Ware's recent performance, as Charles chose to sing a tribute for his mother at his Hall of Fame induction which gives the guys some material for a fun conversation.  Prior to his professional career, Woodson was a two-time All-American at Michigan and led the Wolverines to an undefeated season and national championship in 1997, the same year he became the only individual to win the Heisman Trophy while playing on both sides of the ball. Fred asks about playing with Tom Brady during those years at college and what type of player he was then and the difference in Brady during the early years vs becoming one of the best to ever play in the NFL. With all the surrounding controversy around Michigan football today, Woodson remains loyal to the program and doesn't find any foul play with the information he is aware of that's gone on.  Woodson goes on to talk about his own NFL career and later on playing against his college teammate sharing how a day doesn't go by where someone doesn't ask him about the infamous loss to Brady in the 2002 postseason, where Charles sacked Tom who fumbled to seal the win for the Raiders yet, it was overturned due to the "Tuck rule" and the Patriots went onto win. A moment that haunted Woodson for years which is why winning the Super Bowl with Green Bay Packers meant so much to him later on in his NFL tenure. Talking about how some of the greatest cornerbacks are often compared to Woodson, he reiterates how and why people view him as one of the greatest defensive players to step on the field with no argument on this from Ryan, Fred or Channing as they reiterate Woodson's achievements and go on to say that he himself often looks back at some of the things he did, and can't believe he did it either.  Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Part 2 of our two-part special, "Not Just a Game: Student Athletes & Opioids." As fall sports begin, this episode takes a comprehensive look at the alarming issue of opioid misuse among student athletes. Our expert guest, Dr. Averill Sutchar, Founder of Physio Project HQ, brings his expertise in sports injuries and physical therapy to the discussion. We explore the reasons behind opioid misuse, particularly in the context of managing pain and injuries among young athletes. Join co-hosts Jodie Sweetin and Amy McCarthy, along with celebrity guest Ryan Grant and Taylor Hooton Foundation Founder, Donald Hooton Jr, as we discuss the potential risks and long-term health effects associated with steroid and opioid use.  Dr. Sutchar also sheds light on how parents and mentors can recognize signs of misuse and offers practical advice to protect student athletes' health and well-being. As a critical conversation for parents of student athletes, this episode aims to equip caregivers with the knowledge and tools to ensure the safety and success of young athletes. Key takeaways:  Opioid misuse is a critical issue among student athletes, particularly when managing pain and injuries. Dr. Averill Sutchar emphasizes the need to be aware of the potential risks and long-term health effects associated with opioid use. Parents and mentors play a crucial role in recognizing signs of misuse and protecting the health and well-being of student athletes. Non-opioid alternatives for pain management should be considered and explored whenever possible. Early education and awareness about the risks of opioid misuse are essential for student athletes and their support systems. Taking pain seriously and being intentional about how pain is treated can prevent opioid misuse. Opioids can have significant effects on the body, and it doesn't take long for someone to become addicted. Seeking professional guidance and talking to the child's healthcare providers are essential steps in addressing opioid-related concerns. Student athletes should be empowered to prioritize their long-term well-being over short-term solutions. Parents, coaches, and mentors should foster an environment that prioritizes the health and safety of student athletes over winning at all costs. BIOS: Donald Hooton Jr. is one the most sought after speakers in North America on the subject of Appearance and Performance Enhancing Substances use by youth. Donald serves as President for the Taylor Hooton Foundation which he helped his parents found in 2004, the year following the loss of his younger brother Taylor. Taylor died after using anabolic steroids. @thethf Dr. Averill is the Founder of Physio Project HQ. Averill received his bachelors in Psychology from the University of San Diego in 2008 where he played linebacker for Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. He went on to complete his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Creighton University. Averill has a special interest in the treatment of sports injuries, various orthopedic conditions, and spinal conditions. His emphasis is a manual treatment approach, which includes one on one treatment while prescribing therapeutic exercises progressively over the course of his treatment. @physioprojecthq Ryan Grant is a former American football running back in the National Football League (NFL) known for his impressive career with the Green Bay Packers. He was a part of the Packers' Super Bowl XLV championship team in 2010. The Coronavirus has been, in many ways, a clarifying moment. One thing that has been made abundantly clear is we are over-reliant on foreign adversaries for critical medicines and technologies. This needs to change. Onshoring these important industries is both an economic and national security, but in order to accomplish this task, the United States will have to grapple with how to accelerate innovation and investment and how to build a 21st century workforce to maintain our competitiveness. On this episode, Rep. Gallagher is joined by Dr. Michael McQuade, a member of the Defense Innovation Board and the Vice President of Research at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. McQuade, a physicist turned innovator turned academic, is at the forefront of developing talent in fields from 5G to AI, and helps analyze why we need to bring high-tech industries back to the United States, particularly in the Midwest. And while the conversation covers everything from physics to the Endless Frontier Act, given Dr. McQuade's Pittsburgh roots, Rep. Gallagher makes sure the conversation isn't without references to Super Bowl XLV as well.
