Adam (John Travolta) is an intrepid reporter for Rolling Stone magazine currently chasing the biggest story of his career while in LA....when he suddenly comes up with an intriguing back-up story: how healthclubs are becoming the singles bars of the 1980's. :P  And he zeroes in on one healthclub in particular which is called "The Sports Connection" and there he becomes immersed in their world, he is mostly drawn to Jessie (Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis) who is a very charismatic aerobics instructor drawing enthusiastic crowds, though also has a past.  He begins chasing a story about her while also falling for her....and complications ensue.  Directed by James Bridges (The China Syndrome, Urban Cowboy), this was wall-to-wall pelvic thrusts and mid '80's synth-pop music and is otherwise hard to categorize...which might be a major reason it flopped so hard upon initial release almost forty years ago.  But it has since garnered a cult following and is fondly remembered by many as a campy time capsule from a different era.  It also co-stars Laraine Newman, Marilu Henner, Mathew Reed, and Anne DeSalvo.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Aqua aerobics rides wave of popularity in post-pandemic Australia

Past a certain age, many people say they find it gets harder to keep fit. But there's one physical exercise class that's easy to start and take part in. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, aqua aerobics has been growing in popularity in Australia, even in some rural areas. Every day, thousands of Australians are taking part in aqua aerobics. “I just love it, I do about eight to ten classes in five days,” says participant Lynn. “So, it just gives you stability, and friendship and a bit of a laugh,” explains participant Allison.  Over the past year, enrollment in aqua aerobics classes has been steadily rising, according to instructors at leisure centers. Now, close to 80 percent of Australia's aquatic facilities and swim schools offer sessions of the exercise. “Pre-COVID, everything was around a 50 percent attendance mark, and now you're looking at overall around 82 (percent attendance rate) across the board,” says Melissa Janisch of SA Aquatics. From strengthening muscles, improving balance and building a healthy heart, aqua aerobics has many potential benefits. Experts say the benefits aren't just physical. “It's not just looking at cardiovascular fitness, or strength or balance, it's looking at mental health and well-being and having a purpose and catching up with people,” says physiotherapist Caitlin Prior. Aqua aerobics is no longer a staple of just big cities. More and more people in regional communities are signing up for the water exercise sessions, according to instructors. It's getting to the point where swimming centers are finding it hard to keep up with demand. “From when I first started, we barely had anyone coming in, up until now (where) we have 20, sometimes even 30, people in the pool,” says Aqua Instructor Sarah James. Brett Rogers suffers from arthritis. He decided to try aqua aerobics to reduce his pain and he and his wife Sue are now regulars at a weekly class in the town of Renmark, which is miles away from their home. “Although we live just out of Barmera, we don't mind the trouble because the benefits outweigh,” says Rogers. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Six Weeks To Fitness

Are you over 50 or 60 years and have not made your health a priority yet? What are you waiting for? We've all heard the saying, "Life is short." But how often do we truly consider the weight of those words? Life is a precious gift, a whirlwind of experiences waiting to be embraced.  Shouldn't we be doing everything we can to live it to the fullest?  That includes taking care of our health, the very foundation that allows us to explore, connect, and thrive. Think about it: a life riddled with fatigue, aches, and illness limits our ability to experience the world. We miss out on vacation and holiday celebrations with loved ones, all because of ill health. Feeling sluggish and unhealthy can also dampen our mood and motivation, making it harder to chase our dreams and embrace new challenges and opportunities. How are we going to manifest our dreams and ambitions if we're sick and tired all the time? But, here's the good news: taking charge of your health doesn't require drastic measures. Small, sustainable changes can make a big difference. Step #1 Fuel your body: Swap sugary drinks for water, prioritize whole foods over processed options, and find healthy alternatives you actually enjoy. Your body will thank you with increased energy and a sharper mind. When is the last time you ate a piece of fruit? If I were to ask you when was the last time you ate a piece of cake, you would probably say, yesterday, but when is the last time you ate some fruit? otherwise known as nature's candy? Step #2 Move your body: Use it or lose it. You see, I'm part of that over 60 club, I know what happens to our bodies when we don't use our muscles, our muscles atrophy and we become weaker. Find activities you love, whether it's a brisk walk, a dance class, or a yoga session. Even small bursts of movement throughout the day can boost your mood and overall well-being. Step #3 Prioritize your sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Feeling well-rested will improve your focus, energy levels, and even your immune system. Remember, a healthy lifestyle isn't about punishment; it's about empowerment. It's about giving yourself the energy, strength, and resilience to experience all that life throws your way. It's about feeling good in your own skin and having the stamina to chase your passions. You know, when you're healthy, you feel independent. You can get up and go wherever you want without someone assisting you. Isn't that what we strive for, happiness, love and independence? Speaking of independence, have you heard of Dr. Kenneth Cooper? He pioneered the concept of aerobics in the 1960s.  For those of us of a certain age, who thought that it was Jane Fonda who started the aerobics phase, it was actually Dr. Kenneth Cooper, who now at the tender age of 92, is still working to encourage people to become physically fit, why? Because he knows that Life is too short to be unhealthy. Don't Let Your Health or lack of health Steal Your Golden Years. Look at what exercising has done for Dr. Cooper. So, let's invest in ourselves, our bodies, and our well-being. Let's make every day an opportunity to embrace life with a healthy mind and a healthy body.  Because when we feel our best, we can truly live our best. What are some ways you prioritize your health? Share your tips in the comments below! And for those of you who normally watch my video to the end, you may recall my saying, “We don't stop exercising because we grow old, we grow old because we stop exercising. Can you guess where I got that quote? It was from Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the father of Aerobics created that quote and I adopted it. Thank you Dr. Cooper!

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

We've all seen that scene from "Perfect" where John Travolta is humping his way through a Jamie Lee Curtis aerobics class, but there's another two hours to this 1985 box-office bomb. And we had to watch all of it. Longtime Shat The Movies beer buddy Scott in Friendswood, Texas, was kind enough to commission a film about Gene Lyons' three favorite topics: journalism, fitness and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Not to be left out, Dick Ebert had lots to say about sex with elite athletes. And Ash got into a car accident. What genre is "Perfect?" Do newsrooms run on self-loathing? For years we've understood the strong link between exercise and physical health. What has been underappreciated is the link between exercise, physical activity, and mental health. Our guest in episode 116, Dr. A'Naja Newsome knows this well, but also knows the narrative is changing. This paradigm shift is not a moment too soon given the severity of the mental health crisis in America. As Dr. Newsome points out in our conversation the burden of disease from mental illness is on par with chronic conditions like obesity and diabetes.Dr. Newsome reminds us that all is not lost. Physical activity and exercise can play a prominent role in reducing depression, anxiety, and help us cope with stressors better. Those of us who exercise regularly certainly know this already. Sadly, as we'll discuss, this perspective isn't adopted and broadly operationalized in the mental health community. Dr. Newsome is seeking to change that through her research, advocacy, and education of fitness professionals. Join us as we dive into the critical concepts fitness professionals need to consider about helping their clients improve their mental health and treat mental illness through movement.Show Notes Page: https://wellnessparadoxpod.com/episode116Our Guest: Dr. A'Naja Newsome PH.D., CEP, RCRSPA respected educator with a doctorate in interdisciplinary education with an emphasis in exercise science, public health, measurement and research from the University of South Florida, Dr. Newsome is a nationally recognized presenter and has represented a number of leading organizations as a master trainer, including American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, and Technogym USA. Aerobics or Cardio training is your friend. (7:45) Vinnie explains his approach to cardio goals. (10:00) Anna asks Vinnie about his longer hikes and what he takes with him. There are different ways to make exercise fun for yourself. (16:30) Vinnie often talks about an hour of cardio a day—it wasn't that long ago that that was the norm. Now people spend more time on their phone or at a computer than they do doing cardio. (18:15) They discuss the idea of boredom during exercise. (19:00) There are a wide variety of ways to get cardio in. They also chat about getting sun in. Weight-bearing exercise: if you are an avid cyclist or swimmer, you still have to get on your feet and do weight-bearing exercise. (29:00) Weight-bearing exercise is how you build your bones up. Breaking up an hour of cardio into 2 or 3 parts is still great! (33:00) All About Zones Zone 2: What is it and why does it matter? (35:00) He gives examples of all four Zones. Everything is working in your favor in Zone 2. (36:30) HIIT is in Zone 4 and no longer burning fat. Anna asks about needing sugar in the blood for homeostasis. (40:30) Yes, in Zone 4 you may—but it only takes 1 teaspoon, not “carb loading.” You are not maximizing your potential by doing HIIT every day. (41:00) Your body needs 3-4 days to recover after long HIIT workouts. Don't go doing Zone 4 every day to give yourself an excuse to have a donut. You're still damaging your body with the sugar. HIIT is only good for increasing your VO2 Max. Vinnie explains building up your VO2 Max. (45:00) For all the cardio he does, Vinnie only seldom does intervals. How do you calculate Zone 2 for yourself, and do you need a heart rate monitor? (50:00) You don't need a super fancy or expensive heart rate monitor to get your basic info. You can just take your pulse, but that can be tricky. Vinnie shares how to calculate your Zone 2 heart rate. (57:15) Take 180 minus your age. (Do not use 220 as your starting point; that is for calculating *maximum* heart rate). If you are a sedentary person, then minus 5 points. If you are already in good shape, you can add 5 points. The goal is 70-79 % of your maximum heart rate. Anna reminds us of many different grocery store chains where you can find her amazing sauces! They discuss Anna's upcoming Eat Happy Italian book. Dr. Kenneth Cooper (often referred to as the "Father of Aerobics") has been a one of the seminal pioneers in the field of preventive medicine for over five decades. Despite tremendous skepticism from the medical community at large initially, he founded the Cooper Clinic in Dallas in December, 1970 with the belief that taking care of healthy individuals was just as important as treating the sick. Over the years, he has worked to change the perception of preventive medicine and has become a leading advocate for fitness and wellness. His dedication to promoting healthy lifestyles has made arguably one of the biggest impacts in the field of medicine over the past few decades, and his work continues to not only teach physicians, but also to inspire others to prioritize their health and well-being. Dr. Cooper shares his personal daily exercise routine, and information about his upcoming documentary and book releases. Pete and Dr. Cooper delve into the importance of physical fitness in reducing healthcare costs and improving quality of life, as well as discussing strategies to motivate people to prioritize exercise and embrace a healthy lifestyle.  Financial Incentives for Exercise: "I think most one of the most beneficial things we could do to motivate people to exercise is financial motivation. Whether it's getting a reduction in their insurance or a reduction in their income tax because they're living longer. I tried to present that in Washington one time because I wanted to concentrate on toddler obesity and diabetes, adult obesity and diabetes, and the cost of health care. I was recommended to be Surgeon General on two different occasions when Bush was President. But in order to do that, I would have had to sell the aerobics center to the highest bidder, so I turned it down." Key themes discussed Transition from military service to successful research career. Promoting preventive medicine for physicians and laypeople. More exercise is better, but not indefinitely. Adequate sleep, stress control, and vitamin supplementation. Pickleball promotes health, socializing, and community benefits. Increased fitness leads to decreased health care costs. Financial incentives can motivate people to exercise. Embrace exercise to live a fuller life. A few key takeaways: 1. Exercise is a vital component for a long and healthy life: Dr. Kenneth Cooper's personal journey and emphasis on the importance of exercise serve as a reminder that incorporating physical activity into one's lifestyle can significantly impact overall health and well-being. 2. Importance of investing in quality vitamins: Dr. Cooper's discussion about vitamin certification and the need for purity and efficacy ensures listeners understand the significance of choosing high-quality vitamins for disease prevention and health maintenance. 3. The impact of physical activity on healthcare costs: With studies highlighting the potential cost reduction associated with increased physical activity, it's clear that investing in exercise can have significant financial benefits on a personal and global scale. 4. Incentivizing exercise for better health: Dr. Cooper and host Pete Moore discuss the potential for fitness incentives such as insurance reductions or tax benefits to motivate people to stay fit, reinforcing the idea that financial incentives can absolutely play a role in promoting physical activity. 5. Focus on preventive medicine and healthy living: Dr. Cooper's career and the concepts he highlights, such as the "Cooperized" lifestyle and the key factors for healthy living, underscore the importance of preventive medicine, annual medical examinations, and incorporating healthy habits into daily life for long-term wellness.
