Tonight's reading comes from A Speech on the Principles of Finance. This speech was written by Victoria C Woodhull and delivered at Cooper Institute, New York City, Thursday August 3rd, 1871. My name is Teddy and I aim to help people everywhere get a good night's rest. Sleep is so important and my mission is to help you get the rest you need. The podcast is designed to play in the background while you slowly fall asleep. For those new to the podcast, it started from my own struggles with sleep. I wanted to create a resource for others facing similar challenges, and I'm so grateful for the amazing community we've built together.
Canada relies on migrant workers to fill labour gaps, but the Temporary Foreign Worker Program is rife with problems, with a recent United Nations report calling the program a “breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery”. Can this controversial program be fixed, or should it be scrapped altogether? Should all migrant workers be granted permanent residency status when they arrive here? Kyla spoke with the Cooper Institute's Eliza MacLauchlan and Ryan MacRae. Eliza and Ryan are the lead authors of Permanent Jobs, Temporary People, a report that examines how the Temporary Foreign Worker Program is operating on Prince Edward Island. Eliza and Ryan explain how the Temporary Foreign Worker Program has evolved, including its growing role in Atlantic Canada's seafood industry and the forms of exploitation that migrant workers face. They also discuss how to fix the most problematic elements of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, and whether recent measures go far enough. In this episode, my guest is John Galamaga, a licensed massage therapist and certified personal trainer from the Cooper Institute in Dallas. He's also a Senior Master Instructor in LAMAS QiGong, and a foremost expert in the field of health and wellness with over 40 years of experience. Today we discuss how to leverage movement, nutrition, and other lifestyle factors to enhance your overall health. John draws from his extensive experience to share personal stories and setbacks that led him to profound insights. After a health scare during a workout and unsatisfactory answers from his cardiologist, John, 20 years old at the time, sought alternative solutions with an open mind. His journey revealed that the traditional medical approach might not be the best path to a healthier lifestyle.Building on this, we explore why high-intensity training might not be the optimal route to better health and its effects on mitochondrial function. We then discuss science backed practices that enhance mitochondrial health, which have yet to emerge in the mainstream fitness world. We also discuss proper stretching techniques, the idea of a “one diet fits all” approach, ancient practices of Qigong and sungazing, electromagnetic therapy, and he challenges common misconceptions within the health space. We close the discussion with actionable steps and key takeaways to help you kickstart and further your health journey. An interview with Dr. Kenneth Cooper, Founder of The Cooper Institute and Founder and Chairman at the Cooper Aerobics Center.I've had hundreds of letters from people telling me I wish I'd known 20 years ago how much better I could feel. But once I got in shape and followed your recommendations, I felt the best I've ever felt in my life. In this episode we turn to the great emancipator—not that he started out with that intention. From the covenant between the States in one Union to the painful perception of necessary bloodshed for the North as well as the South on account of its collusion, Lincoln out-Jeffersoned Jefferson, invoking the equality of all human beings according to the Declaration over against the evasion of the slavery issue in the Constitution. And yet, young Lincoln has about as much regard for orthodox Christianity as Jefferson did. What was that brought about such different results in conscience and action? What did Lincoln perceive of God that others could not, as he expressed so powerfully in the Second Inaugural? Notes: 1. Lincoln, Speeches and Writings (Library of America). See in particular: 1860 Speech at the Cooper Institute, 1861 First Inaugural, 1862 Annual Message to Congress, 1862 Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 Proclamation Appointing a National Fast Day, 1863 Gettysburg Address, 1865 Second Inaugural 2. Dr. Cooper is a legend in the HALO sector. Currently a spry 90 years old, Cooper founded his clinic 51 years ago in Dallas which has since grown to a 30 acre campus. It is one of the few places in the USA that combines a medical and fitness center. With books published in 42 languages, over 600 peer reviewed papers presented, Dr. Cooper was--putting it mildly--way ahead of his time. After presenting his keynote at IHRSA 2021, he sat down with Pete to discuss the results of one 25 year study in particular ("You're better off being fit and fat, than skinny and sedentary") and adamantly continues to drive the point home that, "No drug can replicate the results of an active lifestyle." He points out some of the problems with statin drugs, the 8 factors his Institute focuses on to get people "Cooperized," the critical importance of Vitamin D3, his personal regimen, thoughts on wearables and personal fitness data, ("Data drives decisions!") and more. His message (perhaps now more than ever due to COVID) is a must listen for anyone at any level in the HALO sector. Click here to download transcript.

Move It or Lose It – Beyond Ergonomics Episode #291 with Dr. Uche Odiatu We've all heard the benefits of exercise, but it goes beyond ergonomics. To remind you of the neurological benefits of being physically active, Kirk Behrendt brings back Dr. Uche Odiatu for a lesson on how exercise can keep your mind healthy and add years to your practice. And the best part is, you don't need a lot of time to get moving — start today! For more, listen to Episode 291 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: There are neurological and physiological benefits to being physically active. Exercising and fitness goes beyond just “looking hot”. Fitness isn't a cost, it's an investment. Sitting is the new smoking! Walk more, walk briskly, and live longer. You don't need a ton of time to exercise! Quotes: “Most people, when they think of exercise, they're thinking a flat stomach. They think of squares. They're thinking of “looking hot” for your high school reunion . . . Dr. Church from the Cooper Institute in Texas said the benefit of being regularly physically active, 90% of it is from the neck up, which means neurologically, longer telomeres, better synaptic connections, less toxin buildup, better sleep.” (05:27—06:04) “People who aren't physically active are 1/10th as productive as people who are physically active.” (07:06—07:12) “Michael Colgan, PhD, in a book called Save Your Brain, said by age 55, for most people who are physically inactive, which is basically 85% of the audience here . . . almost half of their mitochondria are no longer fully functioning.” (09:21—09:43) “I don't think fitness costs anything. It's an investment. Nutrition is an investment for me. My exercise equipment is an investment for me. My yoga mat is an investment for me. My Lululemon is an investment for me . . . Everything in your body that costs, it's actually an investment, from my brain to my nutrition to my equipment.” (16:01—16:31) “We weren't designed to sit. It literally shuts down our physiology. It shuts down breathing. And you're thinking, ‘Is that a big deal?' Well, the brain, at three pounds, is the biggest oxygen hog. At three pounds, our brain uses 25% of the incoming oxygen. So, when you're sitting, your brain is being starved of oxygen.” (25:27—25:45) “If you can't be in the top 2% in income, be in the top 2% in having a complete exercise program.” (36:34—36:40) Snippets: Dr. Odiatu's background. (03:17—04:48) Why movement is so important in dentistry. (05:27—11:05) Sleep is the secret weapon. (11:42—13:21) Treat your body like a high-performance race car. (14:51—18:00) Move it or lose it. (18:52—20:36) Dentistry is a sport. (21:15—24:28) Sitting is the new smoking. (24:55—27:15) Movement is life. (28:10—30:35) Walk more (briskly) and live longer. (31:21—33:21) The ergonomic side of movement. (34:11—36:40) Myths of exercise and Dr. Odiatu's exercise routine. (37:09—39:16) Interval training is important to the body. (39:26—41:39) Don't overdo it! (42:01—43:39) Keep yourself healthy to add more years to your practice. (44:33—46:14) Dr. Odiatu's contact information and virtual presentations. SHR # 2650:: Omega 3 Levels Help Heart Recovery After Training + What Doctors Don't Understand About Thyroid Hormone - Dr. William Harris - Carl Lanore - The Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI) has published a new research paper in conjunction with The Cooper Institute on omega-3s and heart rate recovery. Omega-3 fatty acids have a long history of being "heart healthy" but exactly why and how has been less clear. They are known to lower serum triglyceride levels, but the effect is relatively small and it's not clear how much of a risk factor high triglyceride levels is in the first place. So how do the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA work to be protective? A recent study from the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study (CCLS) and FARI sheds new light on this question. PLUS Omega 3's and death from COVID-19. This new study shows a link to Omega 3 status and the likelihood of dying from this virus. PLUS One of the first things a doctor will prescribe in HRT is thyroid hormone. They tell their patients it will increase energy and help with fat loss. But the truth is physicians really don't understand how thyroid hormone works. And while it may improve fat loss it will not improve energy. In fact it will sap energy and cause hair loss. Here's why.

The new study found that, compared to non-runners, runners tended to live about three additional years, even if they run slowly or sporadically and smoke, drink or are overweight. No other form of exercise that researchers looked at showed comparable impacts on life span. The findings come as a follow-up to a study done three years ago, in which a group of distinguished exercise scientists scrutinized data from a large trove of medical and fitness tests conducted at the Cooper Institute in Dallas. That analysis found that as little as five minutes of daily running was associated with prolonged life spans. After that study was released, the researchers were inundated with queries from fellow scientists and the general public, says Duck-chul Lee, a professor of kinesiology at Iowa State University and a co-author of the study. Some people asked if other activities, such as walking, were likely to be as beneficial as running for reducing mortality risks.High-mileage runners wondered if they could be doing too much, and if at some undefined number of miles or hours, running might become counterproductive and even contribute to premature mortality. And a few people questioned whether running really added materially to people's life spans. Could it be, they asked rather peevishly, that in order to reduce your risk of dying by a year, you had to spend the equivalent of a year's worth of time on the trails or track, producing no discernible net gain?968重庆之声每周一至周五8点56分每天三分钟养成良好英语听说习惯

For episode 56, where learning and growing from the CTO of FitMetrix, Josh Lloyd about using technology for the member to win. This is something that we explore quite a bit on the show, but this is a deeper discussion where we are learning from Josh about the strategy and tools that will connect the sometimes disparate technology silos inside and outside the club to help bring them back together. In this podcast we're talking about not only how to use technology to enhance and uplevel the customer experience but also how to incentivize healthy living through data points collected via gamification and that relationship to smart push notifications sent to members. FitMetrix was founded in 2013 to solve a need around group training but has now evolved to a more robust platform that does much more by bringing in best practices from outside the fitness industry: FitMetrix has significant technical experience and believes customer service is the most critical path to success. With technology racing ahead faster than ever before what are the smart data sets that club owners and operators can piece together in a tracking solution designed to increase member retention while giving clients better results? The answer to that question and much more takeaways for club owners, operators, and fitness pros in this episode with Josh Lloyd. About Josh Lloyd Josh Lloyd is the co-founder and CTO of FitMetrix, which provides state of the art technology to gyms and health clubs to give members the ability to schedule, train and receive real-time tracking of effort and performance through a facility’s website or customizable app. FitMetrix has partnered with hundreds of gyms across the nation, including Life Time Fitness, Gold’s Gym, Cycle Bar, Cooper Institute, US Fitness and more. Prior to co-founding FitMetrix, Josh was the co-founder and visionary of ShopVisible LLC, which provided business owners with smart technology that combined solutions for customer service, back office, inventory, marketing, accounting and IT into one SEO friendly tool. Due to the success of ShopVisible, Josh was ranked as one of Atlanta Business Leaders’ Top 25 Entrepreneurs in Atlanta in 2012. Prior to ShopVisible, Josh was the Director of Research and Development for CareMedic Systems Inc., as well as Omega Systems Inc. Josh has a bachelor’s degree in business from Florida Atlantic University and has 20 years of experience in professional software development. Listen To Episode 056 As Josh Uncovers Why Josh left the automotive industry to retail and now fitness How key data from treadmills, ellipticals, rowers, and other cardio pieces can be used to tailor the member experience by tying them into a deeply functional tracking solution Why getting the information from the members exercise sessions while in the club is a powerful proactive fitness facilities How to use leaderboards to drive member journey in class settings How to use smart activity data that ties into the long tail of a member's journey How proactive fitness facilities and health clubs are creating an ecosystem that contains brand evangelists How a brand can bring value to a member even when they aren't in the 4 walls of the club The role of wearables and insurance companies in big health data and how facilities can explore a win-win Why Josh believes that this is the most exciting time to be in the fitness industry Understanding "Emotional Resistance" – why people do things to sabotage their success in reaching fitness goals Why FitMetrix partnered with Perkville to engage more members in 2018 Actionable steps for club owners, operators, and fitness professionals around technology and members Top 3 Takeaways From The Show The merging of the inside club data and outside club data is more important in 2018 than before. Josh believes that smart aggregate data from treadmills, ellipticals, rowers, and other cardio pieces can be used to tailor the member experience by tying them into a deeply functional tracking solution. By getting the information from the member's exercise sessions while in the club, proactive fitness facilities can now reach more of an emotional context for motivation by delivering detailed and actionable incentives to members. Josh speaks to the power of using leaderboards to drive more members to a successful health journey. At the end of the day when the technology is not there, you're self-regulating. When a member's stats are up on a leaderboard at the same time of the people next to them, they are going to push themselves harder, and everyone's going to push themselves harder, which creates a more dynamic class experience that they'll tell their friends about. When we view the power of wearables and creating a true ecosystem that is built for the member to win, clubs that partner with insurance companies and medical fitness organizations will now start to rise above their competitors as we look towards 2018 with more tools, technology, and the need for programs that reward people at their deepest needs. Power Quotes From Josh Lloyd "What we must ask as an industry is what can we be doing outside of just booking a class, outside of what is just happening in the studio, but also what are the other opportunities we can use to engage with the member?" - Josh Lloyd on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "At the end of the day when the technology is not there, you're self-regulating. When you're up on a leaderboard at the same time of the people next you, you're going to push yourself harder, everyone's going to push themselves harder." - Josh Lloyd on the Fitness + Technology Podcast Resources Mentioned From Josh Josh Lloyd on LinkedIn Become a Member of FIT-C FitMetrix on the web FitMetrix on Twitter Fitmetrix on facebook Fitmetrix partners ABC Financial Club Ready Emotional Resistance – why people do things to sabotage their success in reaching fitness goals Outside Online - The Surprising Ways Your Fitness Data Is Really Being Used 054 Sunil Saha: Fitness Loyalty Programs For Revenue & Engagement 042 Josh Cherry: The Future of Fitness Gamification 049 Michael Wood: Fitness Devices, Data, & Ecosystems Josh Lloyd - Developing The Future Of Fitness 053 Nir Eyal: Consumer Behavior & Creating Habit Forming Products John Hancock Wearables Program - Vitality Points Thanks To Our Outstanding Sponsors Bryan O’Rourke and his family of companies including Vedere Ventures, Integerus Advisors, and many more. For episode 37 we're learning about the exponential benefits and current progress of the #PHITAct, and why it is so vital to fitness industry growth, with the Vice-Chair of IHRSA and the Owner of Newtown Athletic Club, Jim Worthington. After the recent report published by PHIT America In 2017 - "The Inactivity Pandemic," it should not come as a surprise that Nike, The Cooper Institute, The American Heart Institute, Shape America, & Pop Warner Football are all joining forces to pass the #PHITAct through both the Senate and Congress. As you'll hear on today's show with Jim, this legislation has the potential to massively uplevel our industry reach and help put prevention in our healthcare system. Earlier in 2017, you heard from Bryan O'Rourke in F+T episode #020, about how even with as much as we're doing collectively in the fitness industry to help fight the obesity epidemic, the reality is that the current healthcare model is broken. What we have now isn’t healthcare, it's sick care, and the passage of the #PHITAct will bring legislative power to help change that by getting more people active and healthy than ever before. With this turning of the tide, the #PHITAct will also help Americans save 20-30% on yearly expenses related to physical activity. As an industry professional, we need your help today to make this bill pass. Be sure to tap on your show artwork and click the link: "Ask Congress To Pass #PHITAct." What simple yet effective actions can thousands of fitness leaders in our space take to create more revenue and serve large numbers of brand new members? The answer to that question and much more takeaways for club owners, operators, and fitness professionals in this episode with Jim Worthington. About Jim Worthington Jim Worthington is the owner of the Newtown Athletic Club (NAC) a 250,000 square foot lifestyle club on 22 acres established in 1978 in Newtown, PA. He is also a real-estate developer and a supporter of start-up entrepreneurs. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in 1978 from West Chester University and working as a racquetball pro and club manager, Jim took on an ownership role at the NAC in 1981, building the club to its current status as a Top 100 Club in America for the past 20 years. Mr. Worthington is now the sole owner of the club which is considered the third largest privately owned individual health club in the nation. As a 40-year industry veteran and a member of IHRSA (International Health Racquetball and Sports Association) since its inception, Jim has contributed to countless industry publications, attended every IHRSA conference and now serves on the IHRSA Board of Directors as the Vice Chair. He has pioneered many club concepts such as bundling membership fees, membership integration initiatives and all-inclusive programming. His club has received numerous local and national honors as a reflection of his maverick leadership and vision. Jim has also founded the Delaware Valley alliance of Health and Sports Clubs and the NAC Have a Heart Foundation (501c3) which handles all of the NAC’s charitable initiatives and oversees the “My Right To Try” advocacy work to help terminally ill patients receive FDA Phase 2 and 3 potentially life-saving trial drugs earlier. Jim is a visionary and leader not only in the fitness industry but also in his community donating to many charitable causes and generally making the world a better place. Listen To Episode 037 As Jim Uncovers What the PHIT Act will do for the future of the fitness industry space Why the PHIT Act is so vital to our industry growth What is the current status of progress for the PHIT Act in Congress What is IHRSA doing to support the PHIT Act passage in Congress What are the detailed benefits of the PHIT Act for the fitness industry and other sports, health, and wellness industries such as massage, DCT, chiropractic and many more How industry professionals can take appropriate actions to help support IHRSA and the PHIT Act in 2017 Why it becomes easy for busy fitness industry professionals to get involved in their day- to-day roles and miss the "big picture" of how bills like the PHIT Act can help them help more people What new possibilities Jim Worthington sees on the horizon at the intersection of fitness and technology How club owners, operators, and fitness professionals can leverage their members and networks to spark change How to ask your congressional representative to support the passage of PHIT America Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Jim reminds us that our Congressional representatives work for us. As a fitness industry professional, it may feel somewhat overwhelming to believe your vote will create impact for this bill, but the truth is that the IHRSA organization is here to support getting your voice heard. Be sure to tap on the show artwork today right from your phone, and click here: "Ask Congress To Pass #PHITAct." IHRSA can only do so much. When it comes to relationships with your Local Senators, State Senators, and Local Congressmen, it's really the obligation of the people in the industry, the club owners, and the operators, to reach out and make this a priority for their representatives. Jim believes this is the biggest opportunity we've ever seen for the fitness industry to grow its participants and change more people's lives. The #PHITAct is far bigger than just our space, it's a way to bring fitness down to the levels of the less fortunate and to those who can't afford a health club membership. It allows for lower-economic citizens to have access to more of the same things that everyone else does. The reality is that not everyone has the ability to attend a fitness facility, and the #PHTAct will make a huge difference for the health of so many who need it most. Power Quotes From Jim "IHRSA can only do so much. When it comes to relationships with your Local Senators or your State Senators and Local Congressmen, it's really the obligation of the people in the industry, the club owners and the operators, to reach out and make this a priority to get them on board with the PHIT Act. Frankly, that's where my frustration lies. I feel like this could be the biggest opportunity for our fitness industry to grow the amount of participants and change people's lives." - Jim Worthington on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "I urge everyone to get out there and make that call to push the PHIT Act over the goal line. If we don't do it this year, I don't know if we're ever going to because we've been talking about this for 10 years." - Jim Worthington on the Fitness + Technology Podcast Resources Mentioned From Jim Ask Congress To Pass #PHITAct Jim Worthington IHRSA Jim Worthington LinkedIn IHRSA facebook IHRSA Twitter IHRSA YouTube IHRSA #PHITAct Toolkit S.482 - PHIT Act of 2017 PHIT America: 2017 Inactivity Pandemic Report FTP Episode #020 Bryan O'Rourke: How Will The #PHITAct Change Our Industry FTP Episode #030 JR Burgess: Medical Fitness For IHRSA & Health Clubs The Opportunity Of An ERA Is Here With Passage of #PASSPHIT Jim's Favorite Book: "Age Wave: How The Most Important Trend Of Our Time Will Change Your Future" FTP Episode #015 Dave Wright: MYZONE & The Current State of Wearables Newtown Athletic Club The 2017 FIT-C Tech Trends Report Rick Caro IHRSA Bryan O'Rourke IHRSA Norm Cates IHRSA John McCarthy IHRSA Helen Durkin IHRSA IHRSA Leadership Fitness Industry Leadership Council - ILC Thanks To Our Outstanding Sponsors Bryan O’Rourke and his family of companies including Vedere Ventures, Integerus Advisors, and many more. One hobby could prolong your life. FOX's Alex Hein reports: This is Housecall for Health. If you've been searching for a new hobby, this latest study suggests that picking up running could help you add years to life. Researchers said that even runners who smoke, drink or are overweight tend to outlive their non-runner friends by about three years. The study was conducted at the Cooper Institute in Dallas and found that pounding the pavement trumps all other forms of physical activity in terms of adding to your lifespan. The study was published in Progress in Cardiovascular Disease and found an average of reported running time by participants to be about two hours weekly. One of the more interesting take aways, according to many reports, is that running adds more time to people's lives than it actually takes up, with estimations suggesting that an hour spent running may actually add seven hours to your life. This means that you don't even have to become a fanatic marathoner to enjoy the health perks that come along with your new favorite pastime. For more on this story, check FOXNewsHealth.com. Hello, my cubicle carpoolers, open space cyclists, corner office car shareres, home den dawdlers, and coffee shop subway riders. My name is Brock Armstrong, and I am… not the Workplace Hero. If I am doing my job correctly, I am slowly but surely, podcast by podcast, making you into a Workplace Hero. I am simply an information super highway. Heh… remember how we used to call the internet that? No? You're probably too young. Anyway… Today's Heroic idea came from Workplace Hero, Erin Moline, who sent me an email saying "I'm in my car a lot and with traffic so heinous that I often have to focus a lot and it can be exhausting. I have my ergonomics correct in the car, but I noticed it makes me a little frazzled." And that is exactly what I plan to do with today’s episode. Remember, my Heros, that you can suggest topics you would like me to cover by sending me a note on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by emailing podcast@workplacehero.me. Now, as much as I hate to start the podcast off with a depressing list of horrifying stats, that is exactly what I am going to do. Sorry. But before I do that - did you know that this podcast has an email newsletter that goes along with it? It does. And you can sign up for it at wokrplacehero.me. The form is on the righthand side of the page. Rest assured, because we believe strongly in the idea of Inbox Zero, you will only receive an email once per week, and it will be short, informative and easy to delete. And now, back to how commuting impacts your mental and physical health—and don't worry, I will also let you know what you can do to offset the damage. According to a report in USA Today, the average North American's commute is 25.5 minutes each way. That's about 51 minutes per day or about 204 hours a year spent commuting. Just to put that in perspective, researchers recently found that most adults only do 17 minutes of fitness activities per day or about 103.4 hours per year. So we are only exercising for approximately half the amount of time that we are spending commuting. Ug! The following list is from an excellent Time.com article called, 10 Things Your Commute Does to Your Body, by Carolyn Kylstra. 1. Your Blood Sugar Rises Driving more than 10 miles each way, to and from work, is associated with higher blood sugar, according to a report written by researchers from the University School of Medicine in Saint Louis and the Cooper Institute in Dallas and published in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine. And as we all know, high blood glucose levels can lead to diabetes. 2. Your Cholesterol is Higher The same report in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that the 10-mile one-way drives were also associated with higher cholesterol levels among commuters. This idea is similar to what we talked about in the "To Stand or Not to Stand" podcast with Katy Bowman a few weeks ago which you can find at workplacehero.me/stand 3. Your Depression Risk Rises The researchers from the University School of Medicine in Saint Louis and the Cooper Institute in Dallas also noted in their report that people with commutes of at least 10 miles each way have a higher tendency toward depression, anxiety, and social isolation. We'll talk about how to shake that in a bit. 4. Your Anxiety Increases A newer report from the Office of National Statistics in the U.K. finds that people who commute more than half an hour to work each way report higher levels of stress and anxiety than people with shorter commutes or no commutes at all. Now, while there's not much most of us can do to shorten or eliminate our commute, we can make the most of it by doing something enjoyable during it… like listening to your favourite podcast. Jus' sayin'. 5. Your Happiness and Life Satisfaction Decline The same report from the U.K. found that people with commutes of any length experience lower life satisfaction and happiness than people with no commutes at all. Riding a bus for 30 minutes or longer was associated with the lowest levels of life satisfaction and happiness. It also resulted in the highest amount of chewing gum found stuck to the back of your pant leg when you arrive at work. 6. Your Blood Pressure Temporarily Spikes A researcher from the University of Utah set up an experiment where participants were placed in simulated driving scenarios: They were told they were late to a meeting and had a financial incentive to get to their destination quickly. Half the group was put in high-density traffic; the other half in a less congested environment. The people who drove in more intense traffic had much higher reports of stress, as well as higher blood pressure. Now this likely goes without saying, but if you are one of those people who feel like you're always in a rush, it might be worth leaving well before rush hour—even if you arrive at work at the same time as you normally would, you'll feel less anxious. Keep listening for some breathing techniques you can use to help manage your stress level. 7. Your Blood Pressure Rises Over Time, As Well A study of 4,297 Texans found that the farther the participants lived from where they worked—the longer their commutes—the higher their blood pressure was. High blood pressure over time is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. 8. Your Cardiovascular Fitness Drops The same study out of Texas found that people with longer commutes also had lower levels of cardiovascular fitness and physical activity. It's not hard to see how spending more time in sitting in traffic results in spending less time pounding the pavement or pumping iron. 9. Your Sleep Suffers The Regus Work-Life Balance Index found that people who commute for longer than 45 minutes each way reported lower sleep quality and more exhaustion than people with shorter commutes. For some tips on how to get better sleep refer to the past podcast with Dr. Tam about Air and Light at workplacehero.me/airandlight 10. Your Back Aches Spending hours a week slouched over in a car, subway or bus seat has negative consequences on your posture and your back and neck. Which is why I always recommend standing on public transit. Not only will you not nod off and miss your stop but you will also spend the entire trip firing those little stabilizer muscles and engaging your proprioceptors which can help diminish many of the physiological issues associated with sitting for long periods of time. Not surprisingly, according to a new study by researchers at McGill University, commuters are more likely to feel happier walking to work than taking any other form of transportation. According to a BusinessInsider.com article, a team of researchers surveyed over 3,300 students, staff and faculty members about their travel times, comfort, safety, street harassment, cost, and wait times. The researchers found that participants were happiest when they walked, rode the train, or cycled to work — in that order. The researchers found that participants reported lower satisfaction when they traveled by car, subway, or bus - in that order. When researchers dug deeper into the factors that affect commuter satisfaction, they discovered that travel duration mattered a great deal. Unsurprisingly, people with longer commutes felt less happy than those with shorter ones. But - and this is cool - travel time mattered less to walkers, bikers, and bus riders. An extra ten minutes lowered their satisfaction by only half as much as it did for those who drive, ride the train, or take the subway. Gender was also a significant factor in determining satisfaction. Female participants were more likely to feel unsafe walking or riding the metro. The researchers explained that this finding makes sense because women can be more at risk for street harassment, so the safety of a car can feel more comfortable. So, is the answer to be a man, who walks or rides his bike to work for less than 10 miles? Well, no. I wouldn't leave you hanging there like that… but if the shoe fits, wear it with panache, fellas. Here are some healthy commuting tips for the Greatist.com article named, How to Make Your Commute Suck Way Less, by Sophia Breene. On Public Transportation 1. Take the train. According to one study, train commuters are less stressed and have better moods than those who drive to work. 2. Bring your own entertainment. Use a train commute to prepare your brain for "work mode." Instead of zoning out or mindlessly thumbing through Instagram, use a book or puzzle to warm up for or cool down from a long day at work. 3. Find your Zen. Place both feet on the floor, close your eyes, and breathe deeply. The morning trip to the office can be a great time to get centred before a crazy workday. I am a huge believer in breath work. Personally, I use a method called box breathing. My friend Abi Carver (of yoga15.com) has a great video and article demonstrating how to do that. Here is Abi to explain: This technique is practiced by NavySEALS to help them deal more capably with highly stressful events. Learning to focus on your breath helps to clear your mind and increases your capacity for concentration. Close your eyes, inhale, sit up tall, lengthen your spine and neck. Exhale, draw your shoulders back and let all the air out. Let's begin. Seal your lips and inhale slowly to a count of 5. Hold your breath for the count of 5. Exhale for the count of 5. And hold the breath out for the count of 5. Let's repeat that three more times… 4. Turn off technology. Why start working early? Are you getting paid overtime? Unless you're expecting an important call or text, refrain from technology during your commute. Rather than answer emails before you hit the door, use the time for your own self-care. 5. Snooze between stops. With someone else's eyes on the road, there's no reason you shouldn't take a short nap. Nodding off for a few minutes won't help you catch up from a severe sleep deficit, but a few short zzzs can help you feel refreshed and be more productive. Pro tip: before dozing, set a short timer, so you don't miss your stop. When you are driving 6. Really (really!) relax. OK, you can't actually meditate with closed eyes while driving, but you can still practice mindful exercises. For example, progressive relaxation is done by tensing and relaxing each muscle group for five seconds, starting at your feet and continuing up through your entire body to your face. Combine this with long, slow breaths for a bigger relaxation boost. 7. Learn something new. Turn that dreaded hour of gridlock into an opportunity to learn something. Download a podcast, or an audiobook, or an app like Duolingo, which teaches you a new language (I am using it to brush up on my French). 8. Change your shoes. Interestingly enough, something as simple as changing from work shoes to well-worn sneakers can make a commute much more pleasant. If you've got a formal dress code at the office (high heels or a tie), changing at the end of the day is not only comfier, but it also tells your brain that the stress of the day is over. 9. Loosen up before the drive. Sitting in the driver's seat after a long day in an office chair can have negative physiological effects. Get limber with some stretches before hopping behind the wheel. Abi Carver (from the box breathing video) also has a great list of yoga poses that undo the damage caused by sitting and a few yoga moves that boost your energy at work . Again, I will put both of those links in the show notes at workplacehero.me/commute And to round this all off, here are a few more happy/healthy commuting ideas I found during my research… Studies show people who bike to work take fewer sick days than their driving or train-riding peers. If biking all the way to work isn't an option, consider cycling to a train or bus station, or meeting your carpool group a few miles from home. Spending tons of time alone in the car is not only boring, but it can also cause feelings of isolation and general unhappiness. Instead of commuting alone, find someone to share the journey with. Unexpected evening traffic jams or delayed trains can quickly turn a great day sour. To prevent a pre-dinner meltdown, get in the habit of keeping a healthy snack on hand. For more info on snacks, go to nutritionovereasy.com/hero and get Monica Reinagel's Complete Guide to Heroic Workplace Snacking! And also make sure to check out our past podcast on snacking at workplacehero.me/snacks You already know that sitting for a long period is bad since you listened to the podcast about it… but if you must sit during your commute, watch your posture and keep changing it. Here are some things to try: - Sit at the edge of your seat for a few minutes and then sit as far back as you can, - Keep your feet flat on the floor and then lift them a little off the floor and see how long you can maintain that, - Draw your navel up and in, and lift up through the crown of the head. Hold this anatomically friendly position for 20 seconds, then relax and repeat, - Do some steering wheel isometrics. Grip the steering wheel as tightly as you can and hold it for 30 seconds, then relax and repeat, - By adjusting the way you are holding the steering wheel and which way you are applying pressure, you can do steering wheel pushdowns, bicep squeezes, or even chest flies, - Body weight resistance – If you are not the one doing the driving, you can try some elbow squeezes, commuter crunches, or torso twists. You may get some odd looks but think of it as brightening someone else's day - "You won't believe what I saw this chick doing on the subway this morning." - For your deep core – try some kegel exercises, glute squeezes, or pelvic tilts, - And as Abi describes in her article from earlier, do some neck isometrics – front, back, side-to-side. Another less active strategy is to listen to soothing music. It may be tempting to use high-energy music to wake up in the morning, but up-tempo tunes can make a morning commute more stressful. One survey showed that drivers who listened to heavy metal or loud rock were more prone to road rage and collisions. If there is one thing we have learned during this podcast, it is that you should try to walk whenever you can. Most commutes involve some sitting, so try to walk or stand wherever possible. Hoof'er to the bus instead of getting dropped off or park the car in the commuter lot in the farthest-away spot. And I can't stress this enough - if you are physically able, always take the stairs. Maybe if you work on the 25th floor, you get a pass on this one (no one wants to sweat up their Armani)… but you can only make this excuse on the way up! And here's something a little unexpected - you can try smelling something nice. Commuting can be downright funky so try some on-the-go aromatherapy. A drop of lavender or lemon essential oil can keep anxiety and commuter odors at bay. Lemon, lavender and other plants like basil, oranges, jasmine, and laurel contain linalool, a chemical compound that has a calming effect. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't add a new favourite pass time of mine: Gratitude. Big crowds, late buses, bad weather, construction or inconsiderate jerks can rob you of your joy and feeling of wellness. The fix: Use the power of your mind to change your emotional reaction. If you let the commute do its magic, you'll feel miserable, so take that attention and put it elsewhere. The effects of gratitude and the ability to get in touch emotionally with a sense of thankfulness or appreciation can turn frustration and resentment on its head. And it is simple to do. Just ask yourself, "What am I grateful for today?" And then find something that really resonates with you. It can be fairly simple, like the kiss you got from your partner or the plans you have for the evening — or maybe it is that they finally spelled your name right on your morning latté. You can use these moments to create a “mental gratitude list” and then focus on it on the way to or on the way from work. If you can use one, two or all of these techniques, you may just find that you arrive at your destination in a more content physical and emotional state. ** Workplace Hero is researched, written, narrated and recorded by me Brock Armstrong with editing help and voice acting from Eleanor Cohen. In this episode, Laura DeFina, MD, from Cooper Institute, is interviewed about research published this month in the Annals of Internal of Medicine. The study, shows that individuals who are fit at midlife have a lower risk of deveoping Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in their Medicare years. The study followed more than 19,000 generally healthy men and women who completed a preventive medical exam at Cooper Clinic in Dallas when they were, on average, 49 years of age. The exam also included an assessment of other health risk factors such as body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, and cholesterol. Their health status was evaluated using Medicare data between the years 1999 and 2009, an average of 24 years after their Cooper Clinic examination. Listen to hear Dr. DeFina's thoughts on the study.

Todd Whitthorne discusses Cooper Institute with director of development Connie Tyne. Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the “Father of Aerobics,” founded the Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1970, six months before opening his world famous preventive medicine clinic. He knew an independent research institute was needed to bridge the gap between fitness faddism and scientific legitimacy in order to establish the direct relationship that exists between physical activity and good health. The Institute is governed by its own Board of Trustees and remains administratively and financially independent from any other enterprise. Todd and Connie dicuss the upcoming luncheon Celebrating Generations of Wellness, honoring Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., M.P.H., Thursday April 29, 2010 at noon in the Khmer Pavilion, Hilton Anatole Hotel, Dallas. Guest speaker is Tom Brokaw. A singlc chance ticket is $150; or 4 tickets for $500. A maximum of 1,000 tickets will be in the raffle. Go to www.cooperinst.org for more information.
Todd Whitthorne interviews Colette Cole, a personal trainer at Cooper Fitness Center. Colette has a masters degree in exercise physiology, and co-authored Women's Health and Fitness Guide with Michele Kettles, M.D., M.S.P.H., medical director of Cooper Clinic in Dallas. Research shows lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity and eating a healthy diet can reduce the risk for developing many chronic diseases, and can help manage existing health conditions. With this in mind, Colette started Female Focus, a four- week lifestyle program specifically for women, concentrating on a range of health topics including fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and cancer. Each group of 8- to 10 women meets twice each week for a group exercise class which focuses on the individual needs of the participants. The class aims to teach both how- and why- each exercise is done, and also includes nutrition coaching from a registered dietitian. Although the health benefits of exercise are known, when we need to exercise often the first thing we don't want to do is exercise. The class is designed to help women work through barriers to exercise. Colette says the small group dynamic is fantastic. Exercising with a group is motivating and Female Focus offers the benefits of group motivation in small enough classes where participants are ensured personalized attention. Research supports that if we exercise with a “buddy” we're more likely to stick with it. Colette has noticed that often after a class has ended, the women will continue their friendships and get together to attend a yoga or pilates class, or to walk on the track. Statistics show one in two women will get osteoporosis, a largely preventable disease, and 30 to 40 percent of the women enrolled in the class are there to prevent osteoporosis. Exercise can improve osteopenia, especially in the trunk. Increasing strength helps prevent falls and improve balance. Many women lack the knowledge or may be intimidated by strength training and mistakenly participate in cardio training only. Colette believes this is a mistake. It's a misconception that weight training builds “bulk” in women – in fact it's the opposite. Strength training helps slim, tone, curve and shape the female figure. Female Focus classes concentrate on increasing trunk strength and balance to prevent falls as well as incorporating exercise into everyday activities outside of class. For people who don't have access to Cooper Fitness Center, Todd and Colette talk about how to find a good personal trainer. There are folks in many health clubs who became personal trainers after a 4- or 5 day class. Colette's advice is to look for a Certified Personal Trainer who has a college degree in exercise physiology, kinesiology, or another related field of study. In addition, the trainer needs to be certified from a reputable organization such as the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Cooper Institute, National Strength and Conditioning Association or IDEA. Continuing education is also key – there's always new info coming out, so a good personal trainer will continue to engage in ongoing training. Finally, find someone with experience in the area for the need you have. Personal trainers tend to have specialties, so look for someone who has experience working with people who have similar issues. To enroll in Female Focus, or for more information, contact Colette Cole at 972-233-4832. *I keep the tape running as Dr. Ron and continue to talk, going into a discussion about longevity,* *some concerns related to menopause, when heart disease risk increases, and related concerns for aging males.* Longevity promoting behaviors include keeping that visceral fat off the body, because it hampers hormonal function and can accelerate aging. Some great checkpoints to mitigate the effects of aging include keeping competency with squats, running the mile, and maintaining muscle reserves with regular resistance training. Also, monitor your blood values for triglycerides, glucose, HbA1c and inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein. Surprisingly, women’s cardiovascular risk is lower before menopause – after menopause, their heart risk stats more closely resemble their male counterparts. Dr. Ron also warns us to watch out for the “skinny male” syndrome, when a thin man is actually at higher risk than his heavier wife, because more of the carbohydrates in the diet are going towards lipid production. As Dr. Ron explains, menopause can act as a sort of trigger – because pre menopause, women are fertile; a lot of the time, this means there’s more fat. This is not usually a problem especially during child-rearing years. Obviously, losing weight is a hot topic, and many women in the paleo community have asked for years why they can’t get rid of that last 10 pounds (something I expanded on in my article, How to Lose That Last 10 Pounds ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2016/01/29/how-to-lose-that-last-10-pounds/ ) ) but a lot of the time, it’s just because the female body needs that extra weight for hormonal reasons. But after menopause, Dr. Ron says the female body asks , “ W hy are we still eating this garbage?” because it’s aware that it doesn’t need to support a baby, and the excess fat is just that...excess. As all of us get older, carrying a little extra weight has more serious ramifications – as Dr. Ron says, “With aging, you have to stay ahead of the insulin resistant race as far as possible.” This is why he advises patients to keep carbohydrates restrained, and stay on top of weight/resistance training for muscle preservation. “Muscle wasting with aging” is something Dr. Ron sees all the time with sedentary office workers, and adequate protein intake, along with weight training, are great ways to counteract this. Muscle mass preservation is particularly integral as you age because it helps you metabolize fuel, and the muscle cells themselves contain chemicals, that when released, can help with the aging process. One of Dr. Ron’s most illuminating tests when checking his patients’ vital signs is, how are your squats going? Of course, he’ll check out the triglycerides, their stats, etc., but if his patients can’t do a few squats without getting out of breath, then he knows there’s an area that needs improving. We also discuss The Cooper Institute’s data about the mile run, and how one’s 1 mile run time at the age of 50 is strongly predictive of your changes of living to 80. Clearly, there’s so much you can do to increase your longevity and quality of life as you get older. And, sure, some of those things aren’t always fun or pleasurable – who out there actually likes doing squats? Not many people. Most people would prefer to be noshing on some French fries on the couch then to be sweating and squatting – but think about Longcuts ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2018/11/23/longcutspart1/ ) , something I’ve discussed before ( twice ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2018/11/30/longcutspart2/ ) !). Nothing good in life ever comes easy, but thankfully, a healthy lifestyle is actually pretty easy once you commit to it. It’s just the mental part of it all that trips us up....so, get over yourself, and focus on enjoying the steps you take to increase your longevity and support your health. *TIMESTAMPS:* Brad and Ron talk about aging gracefully. [03:39] Why is menopause such a trigger for physiological changes? [05:22] With aging, you have to stay ahead of the insulin resistant race. [07:15] Squats and mile run abilities are a good indicator of longevity. Time for some interesting Q&A from devoted B.rad podcast listeners. Thanks for the thoughtful questions and comments that make a great contribution to the overall enjoyment, knowledge acquisition, and community spirit with podcast listeners from around the world. We'll cover the logistics and benefits of limiting digestive function to a maximum time window of 12 hours (for example, how caffeinated beverages, herbal tea, and even supplement pills like multivitamins interrupt the fasting process), and how the body works most efficiently (in terms of cell repair, immune function, anti-inflammatory) in a fasted state. We hear from an old-time endurance athlete wondering about how keto aligns with endurance training, and also how to reconcile the enthusiastic voices promoting disparate dietary strategies, from plant based to ancestral. We talk about the validity of the one-mile time trial as an excellent longevity predictor at age 50 (Cooper Institute research), and the rationale and benefits for consuming a maximum nutrient density diet featuring forgotten gems like organ meats—or taking organ supplements if you can't seem to include organs and bone broth in your diet. Send more comments and questions to podcast@bradventures.com!TIMESTAMPS:Raymond has a question about drinking water in that 12-hour fasting window suggested in the book, Two Meals a Day. Give your digestive system a break every day. [02:13]Your eating is tied to your circadian rhythm. You should think about trying to put the evening meal before dark when possible. [04:27]There are studies about “dry fasting” but that is for the extremely advanced. [07:22]Scott asks “Do you really think Keto is the way to go these days?” Brad compares the carnivore diet with the plant-based diet and asks the individual to experiment to decide what is best for them. [09:34]Consuming refined sugars, grains, and industrial seed oils is the biggest problem. [15:50]If you are going to go keto, be sure you get your electrolytes dialed. [18:44]If you under-consume protein, you are going to experience intense cravings for high-protein food. The same goes for carbohydrates. [24:26]Ewan is asking about his urge to run a mile after he has done his sprint workouts. He wants to go for time. [26:37]Ewan also mentions how he is eating liver and feels great.
