It's been a day or two since we did a Mo Willems book on the podcast (and you can believe I'm counting down the days until one of those Elephant & Piggie books turns 20). What absolutely kills me is that we did today's title in complete ignorance of the fact that it was recently adapted into an incredible looking stage production in D.C. with a Chicago-based theater company.... which just closed. Doggone it. This book is interesting for a number of reasons. First off, Mo Willems had already done a Pigeon book (square) and a Knuffle Bunny book (horizontal), but this marked his first vertical book. We discuss our future picture book Steampunk Monster, how Sam's got sass, baby Wild Things, and more. Children's book author Mo Willems never thought a pigeon wanting to drive a bus could turn into a career. But more than 20 years later, Willems is a rock star to both children and parents for his hilarious "Pigeon" book series. He has written dozens of other stories and characters that allow children to play as they are learning to read on their own. Willems sat down with Joe Fryer to talk about his famous pigeon's 20th anniversary and the other projects in store for his fans. Willems released his latest book, "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Sleigh!”, this fall.Follow the ‘Read with Jenna' podcast now to hear new episodes every week. And the fun doesn't stop here! Many educators understand the value of reading aloud to students, but may not have yet unlocked the full power of these tools as an intentional, consistent, and joyful instructional approach. In this episode, we welcome Molly Ness, author or the recent book, Read Alouds for All Learners: A Comprehensive Plan for Every Subject, Every Day, Grades PreK—8. Molly—a former classroom teacher herself, who also spent 16 years as a teacher educator—gives us an overview of the research on read-alouds, detailing the myriad benefits (linguistic, socioemotional, motivational, and physiological) they provide students. Molly also lays out strategies for effective read-alouds, instructions on how to properly plan and implement them, and specific examples of the pre-work process for texts like Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems.Show notes:Book: “Read Alouds for All Learners: A Comprehensive Plan for Every Subject, Every Day, Grades PreK–8” by Molly Ness*Use promo code “AmplifyPodcast20” from Oct. 24, 2023–Dec. 15, 2023, for a 20% discount on the paperback version. Read: “What are Teachers Reading and Why?: An analysis of elementary read aloud titles and the rationales underlying teachers' selections” by Kristin Conradi Smith, Craig A. Those conversational turns are so essential in [a] read-aloud. It's a shared literacy experience around a text." —Molly Ness"What I don't think teachers understand, and I say this having been one of those teachers, is the intentionality that needs to happen in planning the read-aloud." —Molly Ness"When we add things like think-alouds and being explicit in our vocabulary, we are building [students'] metacognition and [their] abiliy to understand text." —Molly Ness"We all have those gaps in knowledge and life experiences, regardless of where we come from and regardless of our zip code and regardless of our personal or family situation." —Molly Ness

Director of Exhibits and Education at the Children's Museum of Atlanta Karen Kelly is the studio for today's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. Joined by co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick, the group discusses a new Mo Willems exhibit, The Pigeon Comes to Atlanta! The group also discusses upcoming events, membership and ways to get involved on this Around Atlanta Segment of Radio. Kelly has worked with the Children's Museum for the past 14 years and been an Atlanta resident since 1982. With two kids of her own, Kelly's work at the Children's Museum speaks to her both on a professional and a personal level. The Children's Museum of Atlanta is an interactive, hands-on, minds-on museum for children from 0-9 years of age. The museum not only serves metro Atlanta and the state of Georgia but also accommodates visitors from all over the Southeast region of the United States. Right near Centennial Olympic Park, the World of Coke and the Atlanta Aquarium, the museum is in the heart of the best Atlanta attractions. Pre-COVID, the museum welcomed over 200,000 guests a year. The great hands-on exhibits, permanent exhibits and on-going programming help make this museum a fantastic place for children to come learn, explore and have a good time! The Pigeon Comes to Atlanta! a Mo Willems exhibit is currently being hosted by the museum. This exhibit is all about the popular book series from children's author Mo Willems. Featuring characters including Pigeon, Piggie, Elephant and Naked Mole Rat, this exhibit was developed by The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh in conjunction with Willems himself. “One of the things I love about Mo Willems and his work, is he wants to give children great situations to work in, but let them figure things out for themselves,” said Kelly. “So, this exhibit is about some of that embedded into the museum itself. Kids learn about resilience and trying things over and over again and having fun.” Activities for children to participate in at the new Mo Willems Exhibit include launching foam hot dogs at Pigeon, dressing up Naked Mole Rat for a runway fashion show, spinning at the laundromat with Knuffle Bunny, dancing with Elephant and Piggie, trying out Mo Willems art techniques and so much more. “Children learn in all different kinds of ways,” said Kelly. “It matters that its hands-on because children learn through doing, especially at this age. They are natural scientists.” With plenty of opportunities for visual, interactive, auditory and other forms of learning, children from a wide range of ages can greatly benefit while also having fun. The exhibit will be up through May 9, 2021, and the museum is asking that visitors make a reservation online before attending here. Due to the risks of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the Children's Museum of Atlanta is taking several precautions to limit the spread of the virus and keep visitors safe. Face masks are required at all times and the museum is implementing social distancing measures. The museum staff also completely cleans the exhibits and areas three times a day in between sessions. The Children's Museum of Atlanta has a fantastic membership program for parents to utilize to maximize learning and fun. Memberships include unlimited free entry for one year, 10% off general admission for accompanying guests, discounted admission to select ticketed museum events, invitations to members-only exhibit previews and other additional benefits. Betsy broke the rules. Under normal circumstances she won't consider a children's book for this podcast unless that title is less than 20 years old. But since she made that rule in the first place, I guess she's the one who gets to break it. And today's book is, in its blood, a rule breaker. In the course of this episode Betsy attempts to encapsulate all of Jacqueline Woodson's major awards (this is a difficult thing to even try, by the way), Kate and Betsy honor Juneteenth, and they try desperately to figure out why this book never won any Caldecott love (to add to its Newbery Honor love). This past weekend Betsy took a trip to the Chicago Children's Museum with her kids, and lo and behold she stumbled upon a Mo Willems exhibit currently showing. She marveled at how the show cleverly integrated elements of the artist's books with honestly good, interactive stations. In a nod to Mo's background in animation, for example, kids can turn (oddly sturdy) cranks which flip pages featuring his characters doing an array of different things. Of course, by complete coincidence Kate and Betsy had just finished recording their episode on Knuffle Bunny Too. It's been a while since they've done a particularly famous book, and this would be the perfect way to kick off the new year. Mind you, longtime listeners might remember that Kate has never been the biggest Mo Willems fan out there. She wasn't particularly enamored of Knuffle Bunny the first. How would the second fare? Not so long ago, before she could even speak words, Trixie went on an errand with her daddy... Trixie and her went down the block, through the park, past the school, and into the Laundromat. Trixie helped her daddy put the laundry into the machine. She even got to put the money into the machine. Then they left. But a block or so later... Trixie realized something. Trixie turned to her daddy and said, "Aggle flaggle kallable!" "That's right," replied her daddy. "We're going home." "AGGLE FLAGGLE KALLABLE!" said Trixie again. "Blaggle plabble." "Wumpy flappy?!" "Snurp." "Now, please don't get fussy," said her daddy. Well, she had no choice... Trixie bawled. "Waaaaa!" She went boneless. She did everything she could to show how unhappy she was. By the time they got home, her daddy was unhappy, too. As soon as Trixie's mommy opened the door, she asked, "Where's Knuffle Bunny?" The whole family ran down the block. And they ran through the park. They zoomed past the school, and into the Laundromat. Trixie's daddy looked for Knuffle Bunny. And looked... and looked... and looked... But Knuffle Bunny was nowhere to be found... So Trixie daddy decided to look harder. Until... "KNUFFLE BUNNY!!!" And those were the first words Trixie ever said.
