This week on Listening Lyrics we have Didar Singh Khalsa. He is a Woodland-area guitarist, singer and highly prolific songwriter whose music blends Americana, alternative folk rock and country-rock. Didar has played guitar for more than five decades. He began writing and recording his own songs much later, partly inspired by attending several songwriting camps taught by British guitarist and songwriter Richard Thompson. His songs tend to be lyric-driven, imaginative and sometimes wry or philosophical. His latest album Bourgeois Virtue contains 14 songs, including “Lord, Wind Me Down Slowly,” “We're Underwater Here,” “Finish the Tapestry” and “Under the Linden Tree.” Didar is a distinctive local musician who writes because he has something personal, thoughtful and occasionally mischievous to say, rather than because he is chasing commercial trends.    

I feel like most of us are trying to be good people: kind, caring, well-disposed towards others. So why doesn't it turn out that way? Why don't we have the power to simply be like that all the time?The problem may be with our mischievous minds. I don't know about yours, but my mind is easily seduced by gossip, criticism, complaint, and a whole bunch of other nonsense. Is this just negativity bias? If so, is there positivity bias? If so, how do we cultivate that? This is what I'm trying to do: notice the mischievous thoughts. Drop them like a hot coal so they don't combust. Remember we're all in this together and that our one job is to take care of one another. Try it and see what happens. See if your mind lets go of its negativity bias if you have one, and begins to create a positivity bias. You might have more power than you think.

Srimad Bhagavatam [Bhagwat Katha] – Part 31 | Swami Mukundananda  Swamiji narrates the touching Mud-eating leela of Shree Krishna. When the cowherd boys complained that Krishna had eaten mud, Mother Yashoda demanded that He open His mouth. Instead of mud, she beheld infinite universes within Him. Overwhelmed and confused, she momentarily glimpsed His divine majesty — yet by Yogmaya's grace, her motherly affection returned, and she again saw only her beloved child.  Swamiji explains that in Braj, Krishna hides His almightiness to relish pure love.
