Episode 359 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Matt Douglas, Founder & CEO of Sincere. Boston has this legacy reputation that you can't build consumer companies in the area, yet there are so many great companies that have scaled like Wayfair, DraftKings, iRobot, SimpliSafe, and so… so… many more. Plus, don't get me started on how many brands, especially footwear, are located here. Anyway, Sincere is another example of a great consumer company at scale. It is highly likely that you've used one of their products like Punchbowl to plan a party, Timehop to relive past memories, or Memento, where you can collect and preserve memories together for a group video or photo album. Sincere's latest brand is Lovebird, a new platform for the wedding industry which is taking on The Knot and other outdated incumbents and as highlighted in this interview with Matt, there will be more coming from Sincere. In this podcast, we cover: * A discussion around the legacy of an entrepreneur and what led Matt down the path of starting a corporate foundation at Sincere for charitable initiatives. * Matt's background story, growing up with 5 brothers and how he started his entrepreneurial roots early on. * Getting his career started and how he became the youngest Product Manager at Adobe. * His brushes with tech luminaries like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Alexis Ohanian, Justin Kan, and Dharmesh Shah. * The background story of Punchbowl and the three key characteristics he used for building a business. * Why the expansion into the wedding market with Lovebird made sense for the company and how they are differentiating themselves from the competitors. * Matt's philosophy around buying premium domains and a hint about his best 5 letter domain that is not even live yet. * And so much more.

This week's guest originally went to school for Behavioral Psychology before finding her way to graphic design. Lila Miller Espinosa is a Brooklyn-based Mexican graphic designer and illustrator who currently works as the Digital Design Manager at Parkwood Entertainment — aka Beyoncé — while running her Spanish-language newsletter Bonita Semana. After years of being a working psychologist, Lila spontaneously decided to follow her then-boyfriend to the US after finding out she qualified for U.S. citizenship through ancestry. With a U.S. passport in hand, Lila moved to NYC with only $1,000 to her name. After 3 months of job-searching, she landed a job as an Office Manager at TimeHop. From there, she made major moves to end up as the Digital Design Manager at Parkwood Entertainment. In this episode, we go over how Lila seized opportunities to become a brand designer, how she launched Bonita Semana, her tips for breaking into the design world, and whether or not she's met Queen Bey herself.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, or on your favorite podcast platform.Guest InfoCheck out Lila's Instagram, Portfolio, and Subscribe to Bonita Semana.Special OfferListeners of the podcast can get a free, undated weekly and monthly planner inspired by the show from our website here.Follow Host Fabiola Lara between episodes:InstagramYoutubeTikTokTopics Covered:Resisting creativity by choosing a practical career pathWorking full-time as a psychologist after graduating with a Behavioral Psychologist degreeBreaking into design through UX/UI DesignMoving to the US with $1,000 dollars to her nameExperiencing culture shock moving from Monterrey to New York CityStruggling with Imposter Syndrome since she doesn't have a formal design backgroundLaunching her Spanish-language newsletter Bonita SemanaLanding her role at Parkwood Entertainment as the Digital Design ManagerWorking on IVY PARK with the Adidas TeamIf she's met Beyonce herselfHer favorite Latinx designersAdvice for people trying to break into the graphic design industryHaving no shame around self-promotionDisputing negative Mexican stereotypes

Timehop brought up another memory today as 5 years ago we left Cuckfield Golf Centre to set up Brighton Junior Golf. A huge learning curve on our JOLF journey
I love Timehop and the memories that pop up. This one came up last week and reminded me of a golf experience that we delivered for young children at a soft play centre. It got me thinking then and that experience totally changed the way I think about the space and time of a child's play experience.
Our life is directly related to our everyday habits. We are one habit away from accomplishing any goal that we set. But what if those things don't come naturally to you? What does it take to build a new habit? I'm super excited about today's show. The always brilliant Mark Batterson joins me today to talk about the intersection of faith and habits, how the practice of gratitude can be life-changing, and his new book, Do It For A Day. Mark Batterson serves as lead pastor of National Community Church in Washington, DC. One church with multiple locations. NCC is focused on reaching emerging generations and meets in theaters throughout the DC metro area. NCC also owns and operates the largest coffeehouse on Capitol Hill. Mark holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Regent University and is the New York Times bestselling author of 19 books. Listen in to learn more about: Mark's experience of writing his latest book and why he chose the topic of habits When setting your goals, you should make them measurable, meaningful, and maintainable. Mark shares how the science of habit formation is as old as the sermon on the Mount. If the habit we are trying to implement doesn't match who we truly are, then we won't keep doing it. Favorite quotes: 1. Leadership starts with self leadership and self leadership boils down to daily habits. What are you doing one day at a time? 2. If faith is being sure of what we hope for then I think goal setting can actually be a spiritual exercise. 3. You have to 3-M your habits. You have to make them measurable, you have to make them meaningful, and you have to make them maintainable. 4. Habit formation is really identity formation. Great things we discussed: 1. Hey friends! On the show today, the brilliant Jackie Hill Perry joins me to talk all about her new book, Holier Than Thou (isn't that a great title?!), why she wrote the book, and how we can trust God because He is Holy, and not in a scary, rigid way we may have heard growing up in the Church. Jackie Hill Perry is a mom, writer, poet, and artist whose work has been featured in the Washington Times, The 700 Club, Desiring God, The Gospel Coalition, and other publications. Since becoming a Christian in 2008, she uses her speaking and teaching gifts to share the light of the gospel of God as authentically as she can. We also dive into a variety of topics such as the crisis of discipleship and holding others accountable, how we are wasting time not to trust God, and why believers should care about God's holiness. Listen in to learn more about: How idols are unholy and insufficient to be God for us. The fact that God is alive makes Him sufficient as a Savior for us. What believers get wrong about God's holiness How suffering and sin, in so many ways, have protected us against God. We need to remember that if God cannot sin, He cannot sin against you. Favorite quotes: 1. Discipleship is simply allowing someone in your life, or being in someone's life where you can not only observe how they live but also be taught how they live. 2. We need people in our lives to impart wisdom and we need people in our lives that we can impart wisdom to. 3. God's holiness is not just his moral purity but it's also his transcendence. The fact that he exists differently from us, that he is a creator not a creature. He is external, he is not finite. 4. Caring about God's holiness is caring about God himself. 5. It's always going to fail you if you don't know God. In this episode I answer this question: 1. How do you work from home and stay productive? (32:42) Great things we discussed: 1. Jackie Hill Perry 2. Holier Than Thou 3. Come Thou Fount 4. Big Brother5. When Narcissism Comes to Church6. Water Flosser 7. TimeHop 8. Be Praised 9. PowerSheets 10. Called Creatives 11. You'd just change the wheel, wouldn't you? [World Cup semi flat tyre] We're on a mission to help one million people RISE by 2030 - join the movement at www.myrise.co.uk I presume we're all, at the very least, aware that the England men's football team played in a major championship final for the first time in 55 years the other week. TimeHop that day showed me that it was exactly three years, to the day, since we reached the semi final of the World Cup. We showed that match on the big screen down at RISE. Had maybe 30 odd of us there, watching together. Within 2m of each other, I should imagine. That's how we rolled back then. I can't remember why, but my Step Daughter Izzie wasn't with her Dad as she normally is on a Wednesday. And my wife Alex was at work (she used to leave the house to work in the “old days”). So Izzie, Charlie and I went over to Bakewell after school to get Oli and Jamie from after their school club. We'd have got back to Macc for about 5.30 and it was a 7pm Kick Off if I remember correctly. Slight problem though. Heading along the A6 between Bakewell and Buxton and we get a flat tyre. That car doesn't have a spare. So we ring The AA. Guy arrives about half five or so. Clearly wanting to get done and home for the England game. I've never seen someone work so fast. Phone cradled between his ear and shoulder, talking to the guys at Selecta-Tyre in Buxton, whilst checking our tyre then loading us onto his flat bed. We get to Selecta-Tyre minutes before they are due to close at 6. And are done and out by 6. Guys are like a pit crew replacing the tyre whilst another guy takes my payment and gives me a receipt. Genuinely all done in under 5 minutes. They were keen to get home too. We got home, picked Alex up, had a quick bite to eat and were in RISE by five to seven. All good! You know what we didn't do, though? Take a baseball bat to the car to ‘write it off'. Or wander off, leaving the car, and give up on driving completely. Or maybe “leave it for a while” and “start again when things are less busy”. Or not bothering to reach out to The AA – the people we've paid money to to help us in such situations. But we do the equivalent with our health and fitness sometimes, don't we? We miss a workout and that becomes several (or more). Decide after we've eaten a few more calories than we might, ideally, have liked that it makes sense to ‘write it off' and eat a load more in response. Or we go all non responsive and do the equivalent of hiding in our room from the people that we've paid to help us with this exact thing (cough ** us ** cough). Things get in the way. Life rarely runs smoothly. We can use that as a reason to make things worse still. Or we can just choose to make the ‘next logical decision' and, at worst, just get to our desired location a little bit late. Much love, Jon ‘Barnes' Hall

Michael needed help with how to gently let his girlfriend know he wasn't fond of the myriad of pet names she has for him...got a message about a Timehop love message that reminded her of #MissedConnections, a wild boar stole a naked guy's laptop and we talk dumb purchases!
Our phone line is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're going to get. So when a listener shares a Timehop memory of a Missed Connection-esque message she once got, we must pass that along!
We've all been there... We get a Timehop photo pop up on social media and we sit there wishing we looked like that again. The ironic thing is; when said photo was taken, 9 times out of 10, we thought we needed to lose weight then too!

In today's episode, Heather chats with Lisa Beth and Phoebe about their book “Mom Jokes: Like Dad Jokes, but Smarter”. The pair discusses how they came up with all the great jokes for the book, and their time writing the book in Phoebe's mother's basement during the beginning of quarantine. The pair wrote the book in hopes it would bring light and laughter to people, especially moms, raising children amid a pandemic. Heather also talks about raising kids and all the ins and outs of raising a boy vs a girl. About the Host: Following the crumbs in the chaos is a full-time job. As a busy mom of three, a wife to a traveling hubby, and keeping it weird in Austin, Texas, it's safe to say that my life is never boring. In addition to running my coaching business as C'N'C's CEO, I'm a certified coach for a premier virtual fitness and nutrition program helping others feel better while sustaining a healthy lifestyle. My mom and dad are thrilled that I'm putting my Exercise Science degree to good use. Along with my experience training pro athletes, S.W.A.T. members, and a high school football team, I gained 10+ years of experience as the Director of Marketing building multiple court reporting companies. Lastly, I am a published writer, Content Coordinator, and Account Executive for a publication by Best Version Media. They even gave me a monthly “How to” column where I teach others how to be more self-sufficient with common household tasks. Every woman should know how their home functions and what to do if something malfunctions, man or no man. With my husband on the road, searching “How To” on the internet has transformed me into a “Mommy MacGyver”. “I don't know how you have the time.” “You're like a Supermom!” These are common things that people say, but the truth is that life hasn't always been easy or pretty. Thank you for joining us for another episode. On this episode, we are talking about our experiences of leading upwards and allowing our teams to lead us. This topic came from our good friend Beth Marshall who sent us a tweet asking for our thoughts on tips with leading our managers and other senior stakeholders. Before diving into the topic, Simon asks the peers what apps or technology has changed the way they all do things. Honourable mentions here for Last.Fm, Timehop, Strava, Apple Watches (Simon has finally got one), and how could we not mention Chris and Russell's epic Poke war on Facebook. To start the main discussion, the peers all mention their experiences with reporting into a test leader or wider engineering/technology leaders and the differences between them.A key theme with this whole episode is ensuring the communication channels with your leaders is open consistently, this builds a positive relationship, trust and accountability in both directions.Experiences (both positive/negative) with leading upwards are discussed including how they have dealt with micro-management and providing dashboards to help their bosses and other senior stakeholders. The peers the discuss how they get their teams to lead them, all sharing tips on how to build those relationships and enable them to grow.We hope you enjoyed this conversation and as always, we would love to hear your thoughts on the topic.Thank you for listening. Pastor Jim Parkin and co-host Ashley Chandler time hop this week and talk about what life has been like these past twelve months, the things we have learned and are still working through, and encouragement as we continue one day at a time.
Intro We frequently compare ourselves to others, don't we? We compare how we look to how other people look. We compare our body types to other people's body types. We compare how much we eat to how much other people eat. Even I do it. We all do. Well, fellow member of The SociEATy Megan Olson and I are here to share one helpful tip with you – stop doing it! Because of how viral and pervasive that diet culture is, this is not an easy habit to break, but we can make efforts to break it! Megan (who has been a huge asset to The SociEATy) grew up eating intuitively but eventually became so obsessed with nutrition and food rules that they controlled her thoughts and affected her body, her mood, and her relationships. She frequently found herself comparing how she ate to how others ate and comparing her body to others' bodies, and it was an obsession that spiraled out of control until she eventually found intuitive eating and joined The SociEATy. Megan has now been eating intuitively and enjoying food freedom for three and a half years, so remember, this does not happen overnight! It takes time. As Megan explains, she had to come to terms with the fact that she had a problem and then seek out help and advice from others, including someone outside of the situation who could provide objective wisdom, and it took her some time to get to where she is today. She is here not only to tell her story but also to provide insight about what to do if you find yourself comparing yourself either to others or to past versions of yourself from years ago, such as avoiding social media tools like Facebook Memories and Timehop, making use of affirmations, and journaling. Please be sure to join us in the SociEATy Facebook group where you will be very likely to run into Megan as she is a very active member, and please do run some thoughts or ideas by me or simply share what you're doing as you're listening to the podcast! I love hearing from you! Time Stamps [1:54] – Colleen enthusiastically welcomes SociEATy member Megan Olson to the podcast, and Megan tells us about herself such as her history with eating and food rules. [4:31] – Colleen muses on how food rules and obsession with food often starts innocently and then spirals out of control because they're coping mechanisms. [7:19] – Megan chronicles the last three and a half years of her life, during which time she has been eating intuitively. [10:35] – Colleen stresses how normal that it is to compare your body size to others, even if you're eating intuitively, because of how influential and pervasive that diet culture is. [12:48] – Megan explains how, during her own journey, she was easily prone to comparing her body to others. [17:40] – Megan expounds on how she deals with the tendency to compare what she is eating to what others are eating. [20:37] – Colleen reads aloud an online post of Megan's that talks about comparing herself to a photo of herself from ten years ago, and Megan gives us advice about what to do if we find ourselves doing something like that. [25:35] – Colleen reflects on how women's bodies are constantly changing throughout their entire lives. [27:08] – Megan advises us on what to do if we are still feeling guilty after we eat, and Colleen enthuses over how important that it is to reflect on what you eat in order for intuitive eating to be successful. [31:26] – Megan lists a couple of actionable tips on how to avoid comparing ourselves to others.

A recent Timehop memory reminded me of a Thanksgiving I spent away from my family about a decade ago. I stayed in NYC and hung out with my friend Vikash and we went to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and had a non-traditional lunch. It is one of my favorite memories. And it was all uncertain when the day began. http://richarddedor.com http://instagram.com/richarddedor http://twitter.com/richarddedor --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/liveitwellpodcast/message
