Today we are answering your questions about estate planning and passing on of wealth to future generations. We talk about the value of giving your kids their inheritance earlier in life when they need it most. We discuss if buying variable annuities as a way to pass wealth to your children or grandchildren is a good idea, as well as what to do when you receive an annuity as inheritance. We discuss the importance of getting a solid estate plan in place, especially when there are complicated situations involving multiple properties being kept in the family and passed down to future generations. We also get to hear from our friends at Wellings Capital and then answer a question about private real estate debt funds. When I would travel the country for book signings, one of the most special combinations of people to arrive at my table would be mothers and daughters-in-law. It's always so touching when two of the most important women in a man's life actually like one another, and maybe even love each other. While it's sadly not the norm, I've always believed that when a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law can open their hearts to receive the blessing of their relationship ... Call 1-800-DR-LAURA / 1-800-375-2872 or make an appointment at DrLaura.comFollow me on social media:Facebook.com/DrLauraInstagram.com/DrLauraProgramYouTube.com/DrLauraJoin My Family!!Receive my Weekly Newsletter + 20% off my Marriage 101 course & 25% off Merch! The teenage years are inherently dysphoric, lets support kids to flow through these years with as much ease as possible. July 16, 2025. Week 29. What is a natural history study (NHS)?  And why do we care? We care because we haven't done this before, heal those born with disease. Natural history studies, which examine the progression of a disease over time, can be either retrospective or prospective. Retrospective studies analyze existing data, like medical records, while prospective studies collect new data over time. Both types are valuable for understanding a disease's course and informing research and treatment strategies. NHS are critical for clinical trial design.  Size and Quality matter.  Validated scales are better than PROs regardless of what the current rhetoric is. What's going on now? USA - https://curesyngap1.org/resources/studies/syngap1-ProMMiS/ - 135+ over three sites, some with FOUR visits, and counting - Adding GCP - Collaborating with world class institutions and excellent clinicians at Stanford, Children's Colorado and, of course, CHOP. USA - https://Citizen.Health/partners/srf has almost 300 patients! Retrospective Health Data. USA - https://rare-x.org/syngap1/ is where we collect PROs. Australia - Dr. Sheffer is running a study, talk to her or Dani. Latin America - SYNGAP1 Argentina with others joining. Europe - https://www.patre.info/syngap1/  Key takeaways for Industry SYNGAP1 is well positioned to work with… Vlasskamp and Wiltrout are published, Citizen Health is growing & ProMMiS is truly exceptional – and growing, and Rare-X is collecting eight key PROs.   Additionally, there are significant international efforts in Australia, Latin America & Europe. Census: https://curesyngap1.org/blog/syngap1-census-2025-update-55-in-q2-2025-total-1636/  If you are in industry and thinking about starting another NHS for your asset, please don't.  Please instead partner with existing PAGs and NHS studies in your key geographies to move faster, have bigger N and not waste precious patients time, we need to accelerate drug development not slow it down by diluting patients and clinicians between too many studies. Learn more about how they can help you at ArmstrongMcGuire.com. What does it really take to scale a nonprofit while staying true to your mission and avoiding burnout? In episode 325 of Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership, Shilpa Alva shares how her organization, Surge, achieved 70% growth while remaining community-led, women-centered, and globally impactful. Listeners will learn how to build infrastructure before chasing funding, why modular programming enables nimble scaling, and how multiple advisory boards can fuel strategic expansion without overloading core staff. She also discusses how self-care and reflection are essential, not optional, for sustainable leadership. Whether you're in the early stages of growth or navigating a bold, new strategic plan, you'll gain practical insights on fundraising, board development, and leading with authenticity.ABOUT SHILPA ALVAShilpa's motivation to start Surge began when she was a child visiting family in India. She saw children her age who didn't have the luxury of playing; instead, many were fetching water. Even as a seven-year-old child, she saw the inequity. Children should not have to bear this kind of responsibility for their family's survival. The founding of Surge in 2008 was in response to this essential need, and Shilpa spent increasingly more time in the communities where they work. That is how Surge's community-led, women-centered model came to be. She listened to and learned from the locals and understood that in order to drive sustainable change, it had to be them driving the agenda on their terms and timeline. Today, a global team of talented staff and volunteers run Surge. And together with local community leaders, they are making a transformational difference.EPISODE TOPICS & RESOURCES Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola EstésReady for a Mastermind?  Go to PMAnonprofit.com/Mastermind  Have you gotten Patton's book Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership: Seven Keys to Advancing Your Career in the Philanthropic Sector – Now available on AudibleDon't miss our weekly Thursday Leadership Lens for the latest on nonprofit leadership

In the early hours of March 24, 1976, the streets of Buenos Aires rumble with tanks as soldiers seize the presidential palace and topple Argentina's leader. The country is now under the control of a military junta, with army chief Jorge Rafael Videla at the helm. With quiet support from the United States and tacit approval from much of Argentina's people, who are tired of constant bombings and gunfights, the junta swiftly launches the National Reorganization Process or El Proceso—a bland name masking their ruthless campaign to crush the political left and instill the country with “Western, Christian” values. The junta holds power until 1983 and decimates a generation. One of the military's most diabolical acts is kidnapping hundreds of pregnant women. After giving birth in captivity, the women are “disappeared,” and their babies secretly given to other families—many of them headed by police or military officers. For mothers of pregnant daughters and daughters-in-law, the source of their grief is twofold—the disappearances of their children, and the theft of their grandchildren. A group of fierce grandmothers forms the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, dedicated to finding the stolen infants and seeking justice from a nation that betrayed them. At a time when speaking out could mean death, the Abuelas confront military officers and launch protests to reach international diplomats and journalists. They become detectives, adopting disguises to observe suspected grandchildren, and even work alongside a renowned American scientist to pioneer groundbreaking genetic tests. A Flower Traveled in My Blood: The Incredible True Story of the Grandmothers Who Fought to Find a Stolen Generation of Children (Simon & Schuster, 2025) by Haley Cohen Gilliland is the rarest of nonfiction that reads like a novel and puts your heart in your throat. It is the product of years of extensive archival research and meticulous, original reporting. It marks the arrival of a blazing new talent in narrative journalism. In these pages, a regime tries to terrorize a country, but love prevails. The grandmothers' stunning stories reveal new truths about memory, identity, and family. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In this episode I answer listener questions: How do you address the dharma and practice with young kids? If I'm trying to be mindful on work breaks, should I just go cold turkey and not look at my phone at all or maybe try a more moderate approach like eating my meal and then looking at my phone? Is it even possible to be mindful while looking at social media, checking email, etc.? And: When sitting in meditation posture, what should I do with my stomach?

In this episode we answer emails from Brian, Gary and Rob.  We discuss the foibles of follies of attempting to market-time gold, the fundamental problems of trying to use TIPS as inflation "hedges" in a diversified portfolio and the limited circumstances in which they make sense, introducing children to financial topics, and tax considerations in making portfolio transitions. Please remember to check out our alternative website design by clicking "Alt Site" at the top right of riskparityradio.com and send your feedback to frank@riskparityradio.com.Links:Father McKenna Center Donation Page:  Donate - Father McKenna CenterBill Bernstein TIPS Ladder Article  ("A bond fund manager recently related to me his difficulty in figuring out the role of TIPS in his portfolios. In this illuminating mailbag episode, we tackle three pressing questions from listeners who've generously supported the Father McKenna Center.First, we address the common dilemma of gold market timing. When prices seem high, should you wait for a pullback or stick to your long-term plan? The answer lies not in crystal ball predictions but in understanding the purpose gold serves in your portfolio across decades, not months. Rather than trying to outsmart the market, consider transitioning gradually into your desired allocation—whether that means buying now or implementing a systematic approach over time. The conversation then pivots to one of investing's most misunderstood instruments: Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS). Despite their reputation as inflation hedges, the data tells a different story. We examine why TIPS have consistently disappointed during both inflationary and deflationary environments, dragging portfolios down precisely when protection was most needed. For investors seeking genuine inflation buffers, we explore alternatives that have historically outperformed during inflationary periods, including managed futures, commodities, and certain equity sectors.Perhaps most valuable is our discussion about raising financially literate children. Rather than forcing concepts on uninterested young minds (a strategy that often backfires), we suggest meeting children where they are developmentally. From opening teen brokerage accounts to creating opportunities for learning about buyer's remorse with small amounts of money, these practical approaches help children develop healthy relationships with finances without overwhelming them.We conclude with tax-efficient portfolio rebalancing strategies, demonstrating how to reduce overconcentrated positions without triggering massive tax bills. By identifying specific tax lots, directing new investments strategically, and managing dividend reinvestments, investors can gradually transform their allocations while minimizing the tax impact.Support the show

Many of us have an intuitive sense that spending some time outside is good for us — and in recent years, science is backing that up.  Whether it's going on a walk down a tree-lined street, splashing in a lake or just eating outside with a view of a garden, spending time in a natural setting can boost our mood.  And that's not all.Growing research shows that spending time in nature can lower blood pressure, improve attention and reduce symptoms of ADHD, prevent near sightedness and strengthen the immune system.MPR News guest host Catharine Richert talks with a health researcher and the director of a nature center about the healing power of the outdoors and ways to incorporate more nature into your summer.Guests: Cathy Jordan is a pediatric neuropsychologist and a professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Her research interests focus on how environments, especially natural environments, shape children's physical and mental development and health. She is also a consulting research director for the Children & Nature Network based in St. Paul.Colleen Foehrenbacher is the executive director of Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center in Lanesboro. The center is situated in 250 acres of restored prairie and mixed hardwood forest and runs a nature-based preschool, field trips for and other outdoor education programs for children, families and adults.
