Last fall, life for the Perez children was turned upside down. Their father, Romeo Sr., was picked up on his way to work and sent to immigration detention. A few months later, their mother, Olga, was detained, too. Her daughter was driving when they were pulled over. Romeo Sr. and Olga were both undocumented and had lived in the United States for decades; their children are US citizens.“I just remember after he had started banging on the window, like, telling me that I have to put the windows down so my mom and my uncle can give their IDs,” says 21-year old Eliza Perez. She told the officer, “You took my dad, and now you're taking my mom.” With their parents gone, Eliza, Jessica, Romeo Jr., and Cynthia had to fend for themselves in Lake Worth, Florida. Eliza, a college student, took charge of the household and the family's landscaping business. The Perezes are not alone. An estimated 205,000 kids have had a parent detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the last year and a half. It's happening all over the country and, in some cases, to the same families who were separated at the border during the first Trump administration. =This week on Reveal, filmmakers Max Maldonado and José Jesús Zaragoza and Mother Jones reporters Samantha Michaels and Isabela Dias look into the lives of two families fighting to stay together as the Trump administration's deportation agenda rips them apart. Why do so many church renewal efforts fall short? In this episode, Loren Richmond Jr. talks with Kris Vos and Larry Doornbos of the Center for Church Renewal about what they've learned from working with more than 120 congregations across North America. Rather than offering quick fixes or flashy programs, they make the case that genuine renewal begins with listening, discipleship, and a renewed commitment to the church's mission. The conversation explores the common challenges facing churches today—from declining attendance and outdated governance structures to unhealthy congregational cultures and the temptation to prioritize institutional survival over the gospel. Kris and Larry explain why renewal is measured in years, not months, and why churches must focus on making disciples rather than simply attracting attenders. They also discuss practical leadership questions: how to create a culture of grace and permission, why church structures should serve mission instead of hindering it, how congregations can better connect with their communities, and what leaders can learn from Native American and Latino churches about relationships and storytelling. Throughout the conversation, they emphasize that renewal is possible—but only through patient, intentional leadership rooted in the gospel. Together they explore: Why churches often misdiagnose their real problems The "Big Three" challenges facing most congregations Why outreach often fails to build lasting relationships How church governance can either enable or hinder mission Why renewal takes far longer than most churches expect When churches should pursue renewal—and when it may be time to "complete and bless" Lessons from Native American and Latino congregations Kris Vos is the campus pastor of a church restart in Lake Worth, FL that is part of Sunlight Community Church campuses of South Florida. He is also the Director of the Center for Church Renewal. Previously, he spent 20 years leading a church plant, Crossroads Community Church, in Schererville, IN. On his journey of church planting, he spent time learning from and training other church planters. Currently, in the work of renewal he has come alongside other renewal leaders. His greatest passion is building relationships with people who don't know Christ. He was discipled for 2 years in college and continues to invest himself in discipling others. He is married to Debra and together they have four children and four grandchildren. Larry Doornbos loves and is committed to the local church. He is an experienced pastor, church planter, and leader. He began his ministry in Rehoboth, New Mexico. During his time Rehoboth CRC took fresh steps in ministry and mission. In 1993, Larry, along with a core group of seven families, began EverGreen Ministries in Hudsonville, Michigan. EverGreen is an outward-facing church that serves its community and the world. Larry served as Director of Vibrant Congregations, helping congregations discover their God-given, hope-filled future. Presently he is president of Imagine Church and director of the New Horizons Project. In his free time Larry loves hanging out with his wife Linda (professor at Oakland University), exploring cities and viewing British TV. He also works out, but he does not enjoy that at all. Linda and Larry have two children: Gayle, a professor at Dordt University, and Chris, a special-needs young man who inspires many. Mentioned Resources:

The Story of The Cravens: From Black Box Approach to Ata-tat and BeyondIn this episode we explore the history and evolution of The Cravens, a Lake Worth, Florida–based rock band rooted in the long-running creative partnership of brothers John and Bill Storch. Joining the conversation are drummer and percussionist Bill Meredith and guitarist David Simone. We trace John and Bill Storch's musical beginnings in the early 1980s with Black Box Approach, a synth-driven new wave band formed during their high school years. Active from roughly 1980 to 1983, the band reflected the era's shift from arena rock into punk, new wave, and electronic influences, earning regional attention and college radio airplay. During this time, they were also part of the broader South Florida music landscape, engaging with local venues, record stores, and a growing network of musicians shaping the scene. From there, the story follows the transition into Ata-tat, marking a move into alternative rock as the Storch brothers relocated to Boston and became part of the mid-1980s underground music scene. The group found radio success and continued strong college airplay while further developing the collaborative songwriting approach established in their earlier work. After this period, John and Bill Storch continued writing and collaborating in a variety of creative settings, including composing music for modern dance companies in Palm Beach County. Their work gradually shifted away from traditional band structures toward more experimental and instrumental compositions before reconnecting with the local music community. The episode captures the formation and evolution of The Cravens, which emerged around 2014 as an acoustic trio before expanding into a full band by 2016 alongside additional longtime collaborators from the local music scene.Note: Bassist and guitarist Dennis Ambrose was unfortunately unable to participate in the interview.

Carlos has a key and incredibly endearing role as Father Diaz, the priest who becomes the spiritual guide and confidant of this confused boy.
