When The Simpsons debuted in December 1989 it was a radical move by the Fox TV Network. There had not been a successful prime-time animated sitcom for adults since The Flintstones in the 1960s. Plus The Simpsons was a lot edgier than the clean family sitcoms on the air at the time. But not only was The Simpsons an instant hit, it became a cultural phenomenon that continues over 30 years later. On this episode of History of the 90s host Kathy Kenzora looks back at the creation of the ground-breaking show and some of the controversy it created with help from Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa Simpson. His memoir, The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression won the 2001 National Book Award for Nonfiction, and was one of the London Times One Hundred Best Books of the Decade. Solomon's book, the bestselling Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity came out in 2012 and tells the stories of families raising exceptional children who find profound meaning in doing so. It received the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction; the Wellcome Book Prize and many more accolades. There was also a celebrated documentary based on the book. The last book Andrew published was Far and Away: How Travel Can Change the World, a collection of his international reporting, and he has also more recently published an Audible Original called New Family Values that explores how the concept of family in America today has utterly changed, though the economic and legal structures lag behind.
We all have our dreams. Personally, I am someone with Many Big Dreams. To be a world-famous, best-selling author, speaker, podcaster, changer of the world, and a songwriter. I love a song with a story to tell. Something that comes from the writer's soul, a tiny piece or a great big chunk set to a softly picked guitar or loud pounding drums. I've got notebooks full of half begun songs, a chorus here a verse there. When the mood strikes me, I'll work on something that sounds like a song in my head. January's Moons and the Hole in My Heart This song is both the tiny piece and big chunk of my soul. While it's for anyone who's lost someone special in their life, I wrote this song when my four-legged soulmate, my horse, My Romeo, died suddenly, leaving a massive hole in my heart. The first time I shared the song with a musician, he put his music to my words. It was a thrill just to have someone say yes, and he created the first version of Hole in My Heart. It was like a simple form of therapy, hearing my words put to music. It felt good and I put the song away. Then, a sister speaker, Jill Christ from my Speaker Sisterhood group shared how she found a professional songwriter from Nashville with some serious street creds, on Air BnB Experiences. Have you heard of this? Jill hired a woman who worked with her for two hours and turned about a beautiful song using Jill's words and Caitlin Evanson's talent and expertise to create a memory. Dang that Jon Bon Jovi. Those are kind of his words. I booked a session with Caitlin. From the get-go she makes the whole two hours fly by, asking all the right questions, providing the guidance to dig deep and holding the space where all those emotions are safe - and usable for the song you are creating. Sharing the story of My Romeo still makes my heart squeeze. There were tears shed in this session, and it was okay. Caitlin said this is what it's all about this kind of therapy she provides by letting us spill our emotions into the mixing pot, by feeling all the feelings to tell the story we need to tell. Caitlin shared how she wants to expand what she does into a kind of therapy, using music to dig into those spaces where we need help to let the words flow. She is already doing it. I hope to work with Caitlin again, to create more songs and to help her share her gifts with the world. Because we could all use some light in our souls and our song playing on the radio. **I do have the Big Dream of Trisha Yearwood singing this song. Springfield is a town of many mysteries, run by shadowy puppet-masters who control the lives of the town's citizens. Colossus, The Monroe Box, the omlette universe - there are many questions The Simpsons is yet to answer. This week, we go through a news article from a dubious Australian news site about Mike Reiss' new book, 'Springfield Confidential: Jokes, Secrets, and Outright Lies from a Lifetime Writing for The Simpsons', and unpack his reveals. Do we feel richer for having these mysteries solved? Do we believe the solutions we're being fed? Or are the writers of The Simpsons still playing coy about the real secrets that lurk beneath the surface of Springfield? As Nick goes through each mystery, James presents his own thoughts and theories. Does his knowledge of the show match up against one of the people who made it? Uh, probably not, right? Come listen. The Simpsons's longest-serving writer/producer Mike Reiss celebrates the 30th anniversary of the longest running show in TV history and shares stories, scandals, and gossip about working with America’s most iconic cartoon family. He talks about his early days writing for the Harvard Lampoon and why Lampoon alums make up half the writers rooms in Hollywood. He recalls working on The Tonight Show, how his only meeting with Johnny Carson was just like being a guest on his show, and a Carnac joke taught him that there’s just no science to comedy. He discusses coming on board the first episode of The Simpsons, why Fox had little faith in the first primetime cartoon since The Flintstones, and why The Simpsons became a cultural phenomenon right out of the gate. He reveals that Simpsons characters are just bad impersonations of old movie stars, how the writers add special guest roles into the script just to meet their childhood heroes, and Mike shares a few of favorite celebrity guests and some of the ones that got away. He talks about the fans' love/hate relationship with the show, some of the crazier conspiracy theories swirling around The Simpsons, and the show's complicated relationship with Seth McFarlane's Family Guy. Plus Mike Reiss tells me which countries have actually banned and even sued The Simpsons and how his own popular children's book got boycotted by the Texas Board of Education. On The Gist, why he lies: a new theory. “I’ve hit rock bottom. I’m writing for a cartoon.” Such were the thoughts of Mike Reiss when he joined the writers’ room for The Simpsons in 1989. Thirty years later, he’s worked on all but two seasons of the show, and says it’s had one real impact: making television smarter and faster. Reiss’ book, co-written with Mathew Klickstein, is Springfield Confidential: Jokes, Secrets, and Outright Lies From a Lifetime Writing for The Simpsons. In the Spiel, stop us if you’ve heard this one before: President Donald Trump creates a problem, sometimes makes the problem a little less bad, and then takes a load of credit.
