Do you consider yourself to be a pretty good public speaker? Maybe even a great speaker? It's possible you're getting the job done, but there's always room for improvement. As you'll hear in part four of our four part series with Speaker Sisterhood club leaders and members, today's guest came to our clubs to make small tweaks with an eye on big changes. My guest today is Kathy Vines, a Certified Professional Organizer, owner of Clever Girl Organizing, and certified coach (CTACC) and professional resume writer through Kathy Vines Coaching. On today's show, Kathy describes her desire to go from being a trainer to being a more inspirational speaker through the use of storytelling and audience engagement techniques. She got the chance to test these new skills in her Speaker Sisterhood club before showing up in front of her audience and saw the difference right away. If you want to take your skills to the next level, listen to today's episode and take a look at our new program, Speaker Sisterhood Express. This is our new six-month, accelerated public speaking training program launching next month. Registration closes today at 5pm ET and more information can be found here. She helps Gen X and Older Millennials with their career strategy, LinkedIn presence, and resumes as they navigate what comes next for them in their professional life. Kathy loves creating clarity and aha moments for people, whether it is figuring out how they should spend the next 20 years of their career, or the best place to put their keys so they stop losing them, once and for all. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/claim-the-stage-podcast/support
Today's episode is part three of a four-part series with Speaker Sisterhood club leaders and members. I put this series together for you because I'm always asked how Speaker Sisterhood is different than Toastmasters, why it's only for women, and what you learn if you sign up. On today's show, I interview Jennifer Cummings Hillery, Speaker Sisterhood member and club leader. Jen shares that she originally checked out Speaker Sisterhood because her friend was starting a club in her community and she wanted to see what it was all about. When she arrived, she was surprised by what she found. That was three years ago and she is still a member of that club and has run her own club for over two years. Listen as Jen talks about her fears around showing emotion while speaking and how she deals with that today, what she has learned about practice, why listening is important, and how being part of a supportive community has helped her on her speaking journey. If you'd like to check out Jen's club, you can do so here. We also have a brand new program called Speaker Sisterhood Express and registration is open until February 24th! It's an accelerated public speaking training program you can participate in from the comfort of your own couch. New clubs are launching in March and they are limited to 10 women per club. Learn more about Speaker Sisterhood Express and register here. More about my guest: Jennifer Cummings Hillery is a lawyer, an active volunteer in her community and a published writer. As an attorney, Jennifer was recognized for her writing skills and oral advocacy. After taking a break from the legal world, Jennifer has found great fulfillment volunteering and serving on the boards of various not-for-profit organizations, political campaigns, and as an elected Town Meeting Member. She was recently awarded an "Outstanding Service Award" from her Alma mater, Skidmore College. Her community involvement has solidified her belief that anything is possible when committed, hardworking, thoughtful individuals come together to support a common goal. She is honored that two of her Speaker Sisterhood club speeches are included in the Speaker Sisterhood compilation book, “Secrets of the Sisterhood: 45 Stories of Love, Truth and Power.” Jennifer loves spending time with her family – husband, three children, two cats, and a dog – who constantly remind her of the joy that exists in all the little things in life. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/claim-the-stage-podcast/support

If you want to get back to basics and have a refresher course on the fundamentals of communication, speaking, and leadership, this episode is for you. My guest today is Joel Schwartzberg. You may remember him from one of our most popular episodes, How to Make a Point That Sticks. Joel is a leadership communications coach and author and today he brings his tips to help you create a "language of leadership." Joel's key message: "The most powerful tool you have as a leader—to inform, engage, and inspire—is your voice. Yet all too often, our words fall flat; we get caught in our head, fail to truly understand our audience, or simply flub the landing. But it's our words and awareness of their impact that make the difference between simply managing teams and inspiring them to do their best work. " We discuss: Why some women come across as aggressive if they are straight forward The importance of gender neutral language Ideas around what to do if you are interrupted in a meeting and how to deal with that Why leaders need to focus their communication on inspiration, not just information The importance of shifting language from merely sharing problems to solving them Do's and don'ts for conveying empathy and hope Easy ways leaders can improve the effectiveness of meetings through communication The three simple words that quickly reveal if you're getting your point across or not More about Joel: Joel Schwartzberg is a leadership communications coach whose clients include American Express, Blue Cross Blue Shield, State Farm Insurance, the Brennan Center for Justice, and Comedy Central. Joel's articles on effective communication have appeared in Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, and Toastmaster magazine. He is the author of Get to the Point! Sharpen Your Message and Make Your Words Matter, which Seth Godin calls “a manifesto for giving talks that make a difference,” and The Language of Leadership: How to Engage and Inspire Your Team, which Kevin Eikenberry says “will make your communication more purposeful, meaningful, and inspirational.” Learn more about Joel and his coaching practice here. How many times have you set a goal for yourself and then either abandoned it, came up with reasons not to do it, or lost motivation and forgot why it was important to begin with? Doing something new, something big, or something different comes along with challenges and oftentimes when we set out to do these things alone, we don't succeed. Why does this happen? My guest today is Molly Keehn Ed.D., an educator, co-founder of CoJourn and co-author of the book, “CoJourn: Harnessing the Power of Connection to Tune into Your Wisdom, Achieve Your Goals, and Create the Life You Want.” Along with co-founder Karl Henricksen, she helps people make changes in their lives in a structured and connected way. On today's show, we discuss the benefits of having an accountability partner when setting out to accomplish a goal, the eight core components of her program and why they are important to a successful partnership, the role of self-compassion, and how to create a "guiding theme" to keep you focused on what you say you want. Molly also shares her own academic research on the subject while giving us a glimpse into her guiding themes and how they are going. Learn more about CoJourn here or get the book here. Today's episode is a must-listen if you have been struggling to figure out what is stopping you from being where you want to be, having what you want to have, or doing what you say you want to do. Today's guest is Lisa Fabrega, a personal transformation advisor who supports ambitious women as they strive to create a deep and lasting impact on the world. Her advice blew my mind as she broke down her Capacity Framework and the six capacities that could be contributing to keeping you stuck. Shifting how you see yourself is just the start of her work as she helps you see your own internal capacity and connection to your inner wisdom. The six capacities she notes are money, visibility, purpose, embodiment, structural, and boundaries. Listen as she goes through each one and describes how these areas can hold you back if unaddressed. More about Lisa: For more than ten years, Lisa has worked with new and seasoned entrepreneurs as well as Nobel Prize organization nominees to break through boundaries that have been holding them back. Her signature approach involves the proven concept of expanding your capacity as a way to reach your highest levels of success. Lisa has addressed thousands of people both on stage as a keynote speaker as well as when she appeared on podcasts including The UnMistakeable Creative, Her Rules Radio and Tell Me A Story with Debra Silverman. She's also been featured on CNN, Yahoo! News and The Huffington Post. She splits her time between Florida and California with her two rescue dogs, Luna and Sadie. We all just went through a year of unexpected twists and turns. What can we learn from it? Anytime we go through something dark, difficult, or traumatic, it changes us. That means we may find that we have new reasons for doing what we're doing, we may care about different things, and we might have to reprioritize. It's a scary time and an exciting time because you get to destroy and then create. On today's show, I go into some questions you can ask yourself to help you recreate your life with the perspective of who you are today. These questions include: How am I defining myself? Where is the life? Where are my allies? Where are the breadcrumbs? What is motivating me today? What is most fulfilling? Where am I looking for validation? What are my three goals for the rest of 2021? What is my origin story? What got you here won't get you there. We all have our dreams. Personally, I am someone with Many Big Dreams. To be a world-famous, best-selling author, speaker, podcaster, changer of the world, and a songwriter. I love a song with a story to tell. Something that comes from the writer's soul, a tiny piece or a great big chunk set to a softly picked guitar or loud pounding drums. I've got notebooks full of half begun songs, a chorus here a verse there. When the mood strikes me, I'll work on something that sounds like a song in my head. January's Moons and the Hole in My Heart This song is both the tiny piece and big chunk of my soul. While it's for anyone who's lost someone special in their life, I wrote this song when my four-legged soulmate, my horse, My Romeo, died suddenly, leaving a massive hole in my heart. The first time I shared the song with a musician, he put his music to my words. It was a thrill just to have someone say yes, and he created the first version of Hole in My Heart. It was like a simple form of therapy, hearing my words put to music. It felt good and I put the song away. Then, a sister speaker, Jill Christ from my Speaker Sisterhood group shared how she found a professional songwriter from Nashville with some serious street creds, on Air BnB Experiences. Have you heard of this? Jill hired a woman who worked with her for two hours and turned about a beautiful song using Jill's words and Caitlin Evanson's talent and expertise to create a memory. Dang that Jon Bon Jovi. Those are kind of his words. I booked a session with Caitlin. From the get-go she makes the whole two hours fly by, asking all the right questions, providing the guidance to dig deep and holding the space where all those emotions are safe - and usable for the song you are creating. Sharing the story of My Romeo still makes my heart squeeze. There were tears shed in this session, and it was okay. Caitlin said this is what it's all about this kind of therapy she provides by letting us spill our emotions into the mixing pot, by feeling all the feelings to tell the story we need to tell. Caitlin shared how she wants to expand what she does into a kind of therapy, using music to dig into those spaces where we need help to let the words flow. She is already doing it. I hope to work with Caitlin again, to create more songs and to help her share her gifts with the world. Because we could all use some light in our souls and our song playing on the radio. **I do have the Big Dream of Trisha Yearwood singing this song. “[I decided] I’m going to take a break from trying to force things to happen, and to force myself to build a business during a time when everyone is pretty exhausted, struggling, and trying to reinvent and rethink what they’re doing. I just hit pause.” - Angela Lussier Today I am doing something a bit different for the podcast, but it’s a conversation that I feel women entrepreneurs are not having often enough. You’ll meet a very successful woman who is open and honest about the challenges she faced in her life and business since the start of the pandemic, the crossroads she found herself at, and the profound lessons that she’s learned along the way.Angela Lussier started off as a self-described “shy girl” and is now an award-winning professional speaker, six-time author, two-time TEDx presenter, and entrepreneur. In her first year of business, she gave hundreds of presentations, published her first book, spoke at TEDx, and started to receive calls from corporations and conferences asking her how much she charged to speak. As you’ll hear, Angela has grown so much over the last year, and it was so refreshing to hear someone who has achieved so much share a behind-the-scenes look at what’s happening in her life. If you think that you are alone in struggling at this time, you’re really not. This episode is an eye-opener, and proof that each one of us is worthy. Developing relationships takes care and courage. This week Angela Lussier, founder of Speaker Sisterhood, joins us and we share thoughts and stories about dating and relationships in general. We talk about what we each want and don't want, what we watch out for and what we seek out, and a little bit about what can happen when we miss the signs.
Hi Friends, Angela here. I have a new course coming out March 8th and this episode is dedicated to the topic I'm covering: How to present online like a pro! Joli and I discuss the topic along with some of our other favorites, like what's bringing us joy and what we're kicking to the curb. After our intro, you'll hear a replay of episode 145, a Q&A episode all about online presenting. I cover: How do I set up my computer and lighting to get the best look? How can you create engagement when people don’t have their camera on and you can’t see them? How can I build an instant connection with a virtual audience? I want to have an engaging opening and usually I just feel like everyone is bored as soon as I start. I hate being on camera! How do I get over this? How do I field questions while trying to present? What if I don’t know the answer to a question? How do I deliver a script when it’s not possible to memorize it? Introducing my new course, Online Presenting Made Easy! This course is designed to take you from anxious and unsure to actually enjoying presenting (yes it is possible!). You’ll learn how to: create content that is meaningful, informative, and not salesy keep the audience engaged from start to finish so you’re not left wondering if anyone heard anything you said use the technology so it enhances your presentation instead of being a source of frustration present yourself with authenticity instead of sounding robotic and boring Register here! I met Linda through the Speaker Sisterhood. In her first speech, she let us know who she was, what had brought her here and now, how she was handling a 'really bad thing,' that happened to her and her family. **This is an emotional topic, and I am grateful to Linda for her courage to share her story with me on Write Speak Play.** Linda's son Brendan was killed in an accident days before he was to start high school. Linda has found writing to be her way to heal, to help her two younger children through their own loss, and finally, to understand there is still joy in life to be had, experienced, and shared, even in the midst of grieving. This is one of those conversations I wish I would have started recording from the beginning. During the first few minutes, before I started recording, we talked about the way writing helps us heal. Linda found that writing about her loss, her grief, and her love for Brendan, she was able to see herself and the new reality she found herself in, from a different perspective, another voice, and it gave her a way to feel, something other than grief, again. Losing people we love is hard. But when we are unable to share our grief, our love, or our stories about those we've lost, we lose more - we lose the memories of them. These are the conversations we must learn to have more of. More about my guest: Linda Broder is a writer and musician living in Northern NJ. She believes in the power of telling your story. She finds stories everywhere - in the echoes of her past and the whispers of trees and in the sounds of her harp. Her upcoming book is on finding hope and wonder. She is currently working on a memoir of loss, music, and the mysteries all around us. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, Spirituality & Health, and Tiny Buddha. From Angela: When you're going through something difficult, do you ever think about how that situation is changing you for the better? What about the lessons and learnings that come from things being hard? On today's episode, I interview Elizabeth Lesser, author of Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow, a book I read over the fall this year. This book had a profound effect on me and I was excited when Elizabeth accepted my offer to come on the show to talk about it. We also discuss her new book, Cassandra Speaks: When Women are the Storytellers, the Human Story Changes and we spend half of the interview discussing how the way stories have been passed on has formed the way we as women think about speaking up today. Elizabeth shares her insights from the book, personal stories from her life, and advice for anyone wanting to share their expertise but thinks they're not ready. She's also the cofounder of Omega Institute, recognized internationally for its workshops and conferences in wellness, spirituality, creativity, and social change. Elizabeth has given two popular TED talks, and is one of Oprah Winfrey’s Super Soul 100, a collection of a hundred leaders who are using their voices and talent to elevate humanity. Before the interview, Joli and I share some of our favorite moments from the interview, what's bringing us joy these days, what we're working on, and updates on our next episode. If you want to skip right to the interview, it starts at 41:50. Today's show is a fun, interactive episode that gives you a chance to play along with your voice and body! My guest today is Kelly Vogel. Kelly is the founder of Sound Passage, a practice that helps people embody the power of their own voice through gentle sound and movement. Most episodes don't come with a user manual, but this one does. I recommend you find a quiet place where you can practice Kelly's teachings as we go. Her exercises are simple and as you'll learn, they make a big difference. We discuss why voice and body work are important and how they can impact you when doing difficult things, like giving a speech, having a hard conversation, or running a big meeting. Kelly shares voice and body warmups you can do anytime and you'll be able to practice them right along with us. Also! Speaker Sisterhood is presenting an online workshop featuring Kelly and her work on October 6th at 7pm ET. We will practice some of the exercises we tried on this episode and you'll learn other ways to stay present in your body during chaos and stress. You can register for that workshop here. More about Kelly: Originally from San Francisco, Kelly holds an MA in Literature and has been a college educator for over 20 years. She is also a singer-songwriter/pianist with three albums of original music. As an introvert, Kelly knows all-too-well the anxiety that public speaking and performing can generate. The creation and development of Sound Passage has been instrumental in helping her move from a place of vocal constraint to a place of inspiration. Kelly is a Learning Specialist at Smith College and lives in Easthampton, MA with her husband and daughter. Does public speaking make you shake in your boots? Today's podcast is with dynamic speaker Angela Lussier, who is a seven time author, entrepreneur, fellow podcaster, award-winning speaker and two time TEDx presenter. Angela admits that she was a shy kid with social anxiety and grew up making a terrifying observation that the best leaders were amazing communicators and impressive public speakers. Facing her fears, she jumped into the world of learning how to find her voice and founded a network of public speaking clubs called Speaker Sisterhood. We know you’ll love it so let’s grab the snacks, call shotgun and hit the road for another episode.
I'm excited to bring you a new series I'm calling "Four Minutes of Truth." It features women who are sharing something that is true for them in a four minute recording. Today's episode features five women I asked to participate to kick off the series, but my hope is that future episodes will include submissions from listeners like you! The five women are all Speaker Sisterhood club leaders who were once members (and some still are). You'll hear about topics like friendship, loneliness, self-awareness, the importance of speaking up, sensitivity as a strength, and new habits formed during the pandemic. You will hear from: Becky Vesce, virtual club and Enfield, CT club leader Julie Bermant, Amherst, MA and Holyoke, MA club leader Janelle Anderson, Christiansburg, VA club leader Jennifer Cummings Hillery, Melrose, MA club leader Shauna Gullbrand, Salem, NH club leader All of these clubs are meeting virtually for the foreseeable future and you are welcome to attend as a guest for free at any time. Email them by clicking the link above and filling out the contact form on their page. If you would like to share your four minutes of truth, email me your recording to angela@speakersisterhood.com. The only requirement is that it starts with "Hi, my name is and this is my four minutes of truth." Don't overthink it and don't write a script. Just freestyle something and see what comes out. To take the survey for my upcoming course on online presentations, click here. The survey will be live until Saturday, August 29th at 12pm ET. Angela Lussier - the founder of the Speaker Sisterhood - is passionate about empowering women to use their voice and step out front with confidence. Several years ago (right after the 2016 election, it turns out), I had invited Angela on to the show and we talked about how - when we own and trust our authentic voices - we trust ourselves to do big things. We wrestled with that word: authenticity. And it’s an idea that we all need to wrestle with in our journey to become a better speaker! How can you BeAuthentic in your journey to become a better speaker?
I'm 5% ready for this episode to be out in the world, but waiting to release it won't solve anything. On today's episode, I share the "answers" to the questions I posed in the last episode. I get into invisible privilege, how learning about my addictions made me aware of my own complacency in other areas, how epigenetics plays a part in our trauma and healing, how focusing on one problem to solve has been problematic for me, and what I am doing to make a difference going forward. I hope you'll share what you thought of this episode or share your own thoughts by emailing me at angela@speakersisterhood.com. I'm living a life I never expected to have. Growing up, I was shy and didn't think I had much to say. When I was 24 an insightful manager of mine encouraged me to find my voice so I could be a stronger leader. At that time, I was panicking before staff meetings, worried about being singled out, and working harder than ever to fit in. I decided to take him up on his advice and spent the next four years working through my fear of speaking (to anyone, really) and found confidence to not only get on stage and present, but also to quit my job and start a business. At 28, I became an independent career consultant and wrote my first book, The Anti-Resume Revolution. Since then, I've become an award-winning professional speaker, written four more books, helped thousands of people find or create work they love, and got invited to the TEDx stage twice. I am now running the Speaking School for Women, hosting Claim the Stage, a public speaking podcast for women. The Speaker Sisterhood is a network of public speaking clubs for women who want to follow their dreams by finding their voice. If you want to be a better facilitator at meetings, feel more confident speaking up, and present yourself with a stronger presence, this club is for you. The first club started in August 2016 in Springfield, MA and in the first few months, five more clubs launched due to popular demand. The network is growing and more clubs are launching all the time. Today’s episode is part two of a four-part series that showcases Speaker Sisterhood members and their speeches that will appear in our new book coming out November 29th, “Secrets of the Sisterhood.” This is a compilation-style book that features 45 speeches about love, truth, and power. On today’s episode, I interview Sandra Costello and Stacy Every, members of our Northampton, Massachusetts club. Sandra Costello is a spirited entrepreneur but also known as the Chief Hugger. She is a portrait photographer to women and the people they love, an inspirational speaker, and the kind of coach all small business owners want by their side. Always positive and ready to inspire photographers and creatives-alike to authentically brand themselves and do the work they love. Stacy Every is a former educator who seven years ago started a new life with her own massage therapy business. Her new life included speaking up and sharing her opinion, and since this terrified her, she joined the Northampton, MA Speaker Sisterhood chapter in 2018. She has been a resident in Westfield, Massachusetts for 17 years where she lives with her three much beloved teenaged children. “Secrets of the Sisterhood” is not only a showcase of amazing stories, it’s also a fundraiser for our scholarship fund. 50% of book profits will go towards this fund so we can give more women access to Speaker Sisterhood membership. Keep listening to future episodes to find out where to get the book and to get a special 30% discount on launch day, November 29, 2019!
Why You Should Do What Scares You the Most with Angela LussierAngela Lussier, CEO & Founder of Speaker Sisterhood, joins me in this episode to explore why we should do that very thing that scares us the most! Angela is a 6-time author and two-time TED-X speaker who at one time tried to make herself invisible because of her extreme shyness. She experienced being bullied as a child because she was very tall, so even as an adult, she tried to hide away and remain unseen due to her fear of being ridiculed or rejected. But she realized that hiding herself away was not a good strategy for advancing her career. So, she faced her fears and did what scared her the most. She became a public speaker! In this episode, Angela shares:How she transformed herself from a shy, invisible woman into an inspirational, in-demand public speaker. Why she gave herself the title CEO.The scariest moment of her life when she allowed herself to be incredibly vulnerable - and how that moment gave her the confidence to build her speaking club for women: the Speaker Sisterhood. How she overcame her struggle with valuing her services and asking for money from clients. The power of stepping into our own resistance and fear. Why she wrote her six books and a preview of an exciting new book coming out in November 2019.The vision of Speaker Sisterhood and how this program empowers women to find their authentic voice and speak from their heart with confidence."There's a lot of resistance when we try things we're afraid of, but when we go into that resistance, we often find there's something there for us to learn and grow, and maybe we'll find we even enjoy it!" Wow! It's so good to be back. Today's episode is part one of a four-part series that will showcase Speaker Sisterhood members and the speeches that will appear in our new book coming out November 29th, "Secrets of the Sisterhood." This is a compilation-style book that features 45 speeches about love, truth, and power. On today's episode, I interview Lauren Simonds, the book's editor and one of our featured speechwriters. Lauren is a former paramedic, a Smith College graduate, an award-winning small business tech journalist, and she currently works as a freelance writer and editor. After years of writing for other people (not that there’s anything wrong with that), Lauren joined a Speaker Sisterhood club to reawaken her own voice and, in the process, discovered an amazing community of women. Lauren also interviews me about the speech I submitted and we talk about what it was like to put this book together. If you've ever thought about working on a project like this, we share some insights into what we learned behind the scenes in the hopes to provide some guidance. "Secrets of the Sisterhood" is not only a showcase of amazing stories, it's also a fundraiser for our scholarship fund. 50% of book profits will go towards this fund so we can give more women access to Speaker Sisterhood membership. Written by Brittany ShenkAnyone here know what glossophobia is? It’s a fear of public speaking, and one of the most common fears human beings experience. It’s right up there with spiders, death, heights, and being stuck in small spaces.Public speaking terrifies me. You’d think after 18 years of schooling, two of which were very presentation-focused, my public speaking anxiety would’ve improved? #nope. Sweat soaks my palms. Breathing becomes more difficult, uneven and shallow. My limbs tremble. I experience a ‘presentation blackout.' I walk off stage to recover, and realize I don't remember a single moment of my speech. Oh crap, did I leave an entire part of it out? Did my words match up with the presentation slides? Who did I make eye-contact with...did I even remember to make eye contact..? What were my hands doing the whole time?? Who knows? I can't remember. These questions just bounce around like ping-pong balls in my head.PUBLIC SPEAKING: A TOOL FOR SELF-DISCOVERYRecently, the ecofemmag team has been focusing on dropping down into our heart spaces before sharing our thoughts. Speaking our truths. This takes a bit of inner work though. Speaking our truths first requires that we explore our inner truths - figuring out who we are at our core - which is what our podcast episode this week is all about. Our podcast guest, Angela Lussier, is a two-time TEDx presenter and founder of the Speaker Sisterhood. We discussed the journey that led her to her profession in public speaking, her experiences on a TED stage, and the Speaker Sisterhood business. She’s also really good at cartwheels.SPEAKER SISTERHOODSpeaker Sisterhood club is kinda like Toastmasters, but it’s exclusively for women and focuses on using public speaking as a tool for self discovery. The curriculum Angela developed is dynamic, and includes mind mapping, impromptu speaking, speech development, meditation, and yoga, among other development activities. The women in the Sisterhood are at various levels with their public speaking skills, but they’re all determined to improve. The members learn from each other, guide one another, lift each other up, and hold space for their club members to feel safe and supported. They’re also finding shifts taking place in other areas of their lives, as a result of the program, areas such as romance, work, removing toxic friendships, and speaking authentically.“If you’re thinking about public speaking, and you feel like you're not ready, you should try it anyway. You’ll never be ready. You just have to start.”CONNECT WITH ANGELA LUSSIERThough she isn’t crazy about spending time on social media, you can still find and connect with her on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. This week, Morgan Vines and Erin Jansky discuss the secret gigs and intimate concerts they organize every month as part of a global network called Sofar Sounds. We also get the scoop on Erin's new speaking club for women called the Speaker Sisterhood and pump Morgan for details about her reign as the Karate State Champion of Texas as well as her recent engagement.
One day, while running her career coaching and consulting business, Angela Lussier realized she was tired of constantly filling her new client funnel and trading her hours for dollars. Deciding there had to be a better way to bring her valuable insights to more people, and make money while she slept, Angela took out her journal and asked herself three important questions. The answers to that self-inquiry helped her realize that public speaking was what she loved, what people asked her about most, and where she had been most successful. And she knew she had to build a business around helping women use their voices and develop their public speaking skills. Her first step, an online course called "The Speaking School for Women", was a 6-week online program on building your brand as a speaker, building a signature talk, pricing, expectations and marketing. And when enthusiastic students completed the course, they started asking where they should practice their talks. Her suggestion to try Toastmasters was met with less than enthusiastic response and that's when she hit on another need - women wanted a safe space where they could practice with other women who knew their challenges speaking up as women, and so she held her first event to help women speak up and use their voices. And that's where Speaker Sisterhood was born.
Welcome back to the podcast!! It’s good to be back in your ears after three months off. On today’s episode, I invite Lenore Braun, the club director of the Speaker Sisterhood, and Amber Ladley, the creative director, to the show to discuss our life-changing summers. Last time we talked, I told you my podcast was taking a vacation, but that wasn’t the only thing that took a hiatus in June. In this special episode, number 100, we lay out some of the biggest learnings, mistakes, ah-ha moments, and regrets from our summer break. We share: how we planned to spend our time and how we actually spent it how we dealt with discomfort and anxiety from taking time off unexpected learnings and lessons how taking time off has helped us claim the stage in life and when speaking advice for others who may be burnt out and needing to take a break but don’t know where to start and don't know how to ask for it our biggest regrets and what we’ll do differently next time Books and resources I discuss in the episode: The Pill by Jane Bennett and Alexandra Pope Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Tony Weschler Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause by John Lee, MD My Flo app and TEDx talk by Alisa Vitti, functional nutritionist, founder of FLOliving.com *I am not affiliated with and do not make money off recommending these books or experts.
In the final episode of the Tales from the Road mini series, Lenore Braun, club director of the Speaker Sisterhood, and Amber Ladley, creative director of the Speaker Sisterhood, interview me about my reflections, lessons, embarrassing moments, and advice for other speakers interested in planning a tour. 13 days after my five-week speaking tour, I'm sharing all the details and behind the scenes stories that went into the planning and execution of this massive undertaking. If you haven't listened to any other episodes in this series yet, you might want to start at the beginning, as I do reference those episodes in this interview. Enjoy!

If you haven't already heard, I'm hitting the road! I'm posting today's episode from Portland, Maine, the first stop on my speaking tour that we've titled #SpeakUpTour2018. I'm on a mission to empower women to speak up through a series of workshops, events, and book signings happening all over New England in the month of April. I'm excited to get started and share my stories from the road as the month goes on. On today's episode, I have three interviews to share with you. I've decided to share the behind the scenes of what goes into building a speaking tour by interviewing a couple of people who made it possible: Shana from All Star Car and Truck Rental in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and Athan Vennell, a clothing designer located in Hatfield, Massachusetts. The third interview in today's episode is with me! Lenore Braun and Amber Ladley, part of the Speaker Sisterhood team, took over the show and interview me about my pre-tour thoughts. I'm pretty tired in the interview, but I think I said a few useful things? We'll see! If you want to view pictures of the van we rented and the dresses I'm wearing, check them out here. Find out more about All Star Car & Truck Rental here and check out Athan Vennell on Facebook or email him at athanvennell@gmail.com. Angela Lussier is an award-winning speaker, five-time author, two-time TEDx presenter, and CEO and founder of the Speaker Sisterhood, a network of speaking clubs that help women discover, awaken, and create their voice through the art of public speaking. Angela is the host of Claim the Stage, a public speaking podcast for women rated #1 on the inspiring podcasts list by Forbes in 2017. She is a contributor to Huffington Post and her work has been featured on ABC, NBC, Forbes, Virgin, and Entrepreneur. Her motto: Stop waiting. Start creating. Playing Small Moment Angela’s most defining small moment took place in 2008, when she was employed at an executive recruiting firm. Angela’s job was very refining. She sat at a desk all day, while making calls and reading the same script. Her boss approached her and asked her to create a presentation showcasing how she stood out from the other recruiters. Angela saw this as an amazing opportunity and put together a detailed presentation. After presenting at the meeting, Angela’s boss told her they knew her creativity would be a problem. Angela struggled to fit into the box they made for her, before realizing maybe the problem wasn’t her at all. Style of Leadership Angela leads by example. She shares her stores to inspire and show others how she got to where she is now. Angela also shares tips and shows them the steps they could be taking to move forward. Now that Angela has a staff working for her, she makes sure to ask lots of questions and welcome their ideas so it can be a more productive space, with her team more invested in their jobs. What Are You Excited About? Angela will be on a speaking tour throughout New England in April. The tour will help spread the word about speaking up and asking what for what you need at home, and at work. Angela will also be promoting her new book, The Secret Life of Speaking Up Prequel: 30 Tiny Speaking Adventures. Current Business Challenge As CEO, Angela is often weighed down by financial worries. There is cash flow and revenue, but they are so close to not being a sustainable business. Angela has a goal, and now has a plan to get there by next year. Leadership Practice Angela is a creative person who tends to come up with a lot of ideas, but when there are too many ideas going at once, not much gets accomplished. Angela’s ability to focus on 1 or 2 ideas at a time, and executing them before continuing to new ideas, really helps her lead effectively. Advice For Younger Self Surrounding yourself with coaches, mentors and a support team, is not essentially a bad thing, but you still need to trust and believe in yourself and the things you want at the same time. Hello everyone and thank you for joining me. This episode is going to be short and sweet this week for a couple of reasons. I am going to give you a quick update on my goals and frankly, I have learned another lesson about spreading myself too thin. I did in fact spread myself too thin but this time it wasn’t about time or physical energy, it was creativity. I took on projects that definitely fit in my calendar and were not going to burn a lot of calories but they were going to take a lot of mental focus and creativity. Before I knew it I was spent and started to have an aversion to sitting at my desk. I started to work with a pad of paper and a pen out in the living room. I lit a candle and made hot cocoa. I tried all my normal tricks and they helped a little but they only got me so far. Although I would love to offer you some new insights this week I’m going to leave it to updates for the sake of my brain. Next week I’m releasing my interview with Angela Lussier of the Speaker Sisterhood and the week after that I will be coming with a fresh and well-rested 100% Jodi episode on The Dip. The Dip is a book by Seth Godin and subtitle is “A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick).” Are you feeling that topic? I am and I’m going to share my experiences with you in just a couple of episodes from here. Until then you know you can always be a part of the community and the conversation in the private facebook group. Go to womentakingthelead.com/group and it will take you right to where you can ask to join and fill out some information about yourself. On to the update on my goals… Goal #1 Build more strength and endurance. Original goal for strength and endurance was to do 300 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form in one session by June 30. Separately, do an unassisted pull-up. Let me start with the pull-up. I said I would have the pull-up bands to help with my goal of doing an unassisted pull-up and I received them last week. Now I just need to start incorporating pull-ups into my workouts during the week. Last month I accomplished my goal of 300 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form in one session on February 20th. In last month’s episode I reported that I’ve changed my goal to doing 1000 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form in one session. I have the plan all mapped out and as of this morning I have done 425 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form in one session. Goal #4 Do a Women Taking the Lead branded full-day event in the summer or fall I’m shooting to have this goal of 1000 burpees accomplished in October.at a fundraising event. In last week’s episode I released the Facebook Live I had done with Emily leRoux of Spartan Races on International Women’s Day. In that conversation we announced that in October, which is breast cancer awareness month, we will be collaborating to do a “Burpees for Boobs” event. I am going to coordinate the event here in Maine but the intention is to have these events happening globally in October. There has not been a lot of extra time to make significant progress on this goal but I have been sharing this goal with a lot of people who are ready to take action as soon as I can give some marching orders. I am crazy-excited about this and it’s almost chaffing me that other things need my attention before I can give this my full focus. However, there will be more to come on this in a couple of months. Goal #2 Be in a relationship One of my milestones was to join a dating app and I announced last month that I did that. Additionally, I had a conversation with a friend about going on the dating app and we went back and forth about what I was looking for. After getting some good critical feedback I declared that I would just start with the intention of meeting good human beings. Since then I have met several good human beings and I’m glad I’ve met them. Some I would want to continue to spend time with but no spark just yet. I have no expectation that this goal will be achieved quickly. My only expectation is that conversations happen that lead to dates, so I can get to know more men. Goal #3 Increase profitability in my business. Goal: have a net income (earnings minus expenses) of $80,000 minimum this year. February’s Profit and Loss report showed a net profit of $493.82. That’s not good and can be partially explained by where my annual bills fall. Some of my largest bills come due in February and March. I’ve also had some legal work done and if you remember from last month I’ve been giving more work to my Virtual Assistant to alleviate my workload as I begin to take on new projects. That has served me well and I am still in the black. However, as I stated last month if I’m going to have a net profit of $80,000 I’m going to need to start recording an average net profit of about $6700 a month. So I’m a little further behind but there is more potential in the coming months. Goal # 5 Outsourcing Goal: (contingent upon profitability goal) to outsource social media content creation and email inbox management. Although I am outsourcing more items to my VA my intention was to outsource social media content creation and the management of my email inbox. I am behind on emails and I don’t feel great about that. Seeing this goal realized is definitely going to take having the funds available to pay for these services. I am hopeful that this will happen sooner rather than later. Again you can be a part of the community and the conversation in the private facebook group. Go to womentakingthelead.com/group and it will take you right to where you can ask to join and fill out some information about yourself. I would love to meet you there. This year has been all about monumental growth for me. In today's bonus episode, I share all the ways I'm growing and reveal something that has been going on in my personal life that I haven't talked about at all until now. (Eek!) I just took on a personal challenge that goes along with that monumental growth and I think you might be into it as well. I had an eye-opening realization this week that led to taking on this challenge and committing to it. This bonus episode is a shorty - just 15 minutes - and also introduces you to our our newest offering: a Speaker Sisterhood virtual club! If you're as growth-focused as me this summer, I think you'll like this challenge and this new opportunity. But make sure to listen before Monday, July 17th so you can get in on it! PS: If you do take the challenge with me, email me your updates! I'd love to share them and/or just read them to myself so I know I'm not alone. Email me at angela@speakersisterhood.com. PPS: If you want to talk to Kara, my amazing coach, find her at https://www.vitalcorpswellness.com (I'm not being paid or compensated in any way for this endorsement, I just love her.)
In last week's episode, we celebrated a year of podcasting by going behind the scenes of the Speaker Sisterhood, a network of public speaking clubs for women that I founded last year. Today we're going to continue that adventure by listening to speeches given by three members of the Northampton, Massachusetts club. You'll hear about zen and tango from Laura Brooks, osteoporosis and climate change from Carla Becker, and creativity from Lynn Simonds. These speeches were recorded on Monday, June 5th, 2017 in one of our regular meetings. The interviews you'll hear after each speech were recorded later that week and I'm excited to share each woman's reflections, growth areas, and words of wisdom. If you'd like to comment on this episode, feel free to email me! Angela@speakersisterhood.com Also! If you're ready to start your public speaking journey, check out a Speaker Sisterhood club. We have in-person clubs and a brand new virtual club launching in July. You can learn more at www.speakersisterhood.com Enjoy!

This week on the Moms With Dreams podcast, we’re talking about the hot topic of public speaking. Women often tell me how they want to speak and get paid, but they’re afraid to put themselves out there. I remember how scary it was the first time that I spoke in front of an audience. So I thought it would be neat to have Angela Lussier, an award-winning speaker, three-time author, two-time TEDx presenter, and trainer join me on the podcast. Angela is the founder of the Speaking School for Women, an online program that trains women to become paid speakers. She is also the founder of the Speaker Sisterhood, a network of speaking clubs for women, and the host of Claim the Stage, a public speaking podcast for women. You’re going to love Angela’s bubbly personality and gain a ton of value from our conversation. During this episode, you’ll learn: How Angela became a speaker on purpose but a paid speaker by accident What she did during her first 6 months in Toastmasters The truth about what you must do to become a great public speaker, get over your fear of public speaking, and improve your presentation skills The steps Angela took to book 16 workshops in 5 minutes and 32 workshops on her 2nd day in business! Why Angela thinks rules shouldn’t apply to brand new speakers What you can do as a new speaker to get comfortable on stage The #1 reason why business owners (especially new ones) should be speaking How to find speaking gigs (thanks to my listener, Cheranissa Roach, for asking this question) Why you should start out with unpaid speaking gigs that add value for your target audience What should be included on your speaker one sheet Angela’s Tip for Improving Your Presentation Skills Videotape yourself then watch it in 3 different ways: Watch without sound so you can see your facial expressions and body language. Listen without watching so you can hear what you’re saying Watch and listen at the same time to see how it all comes together Angela’s Recommended Reading: Purple Cow, by Seth Godin. According to Angel, this is “a great book about marketing, standing out and taking risks so you can become that person or company that people remember.” Angela’s Parting Words of Wisdom “Stop waiting - start creating. The longer we wait for opportunity, the longer we wait to start, and the more time we’re wasting. We need to get started now. Then you can start experimenting and the adventure begins. We’ll get to learn more about ourselves and about the world.” Resources Mentioned: https://www.toastmasters.org/ http://thumbtack.com Speaking School for Women (you can get on the waiting list for the upcoming February session) Angela’s website: http://angelalussier.us I hope you enjoyed this episode of the Moms With Dreams Show. I love to hear from you, so please leave your comments below. Have an idea or topic for an upcoming show? You can email me directly at Erica@momswithdreams.com. As always, keep pushing forward to your dreams. Get out there, do what you love and make a difference. I’ll be back next week with a special end-of-the-year episode to close out 2016 with a BANG! xoxo Erica
Some women stay invisible because they don't use their voices. Speaking School for Women and Speaker Sisterhood founder, Angela Lussier, knows this trick all too well as once "shy girl." After realizing the impact on her own career, she spoke...and went on to become an award-winning speaker with 500+ presentations under her belt – including 2 TEDx talks. For Angela's next trick, she created the Speaking School for Women to train creative, entrepreneurial women to become well-paid, in-demand speakers. She is the host of the Claim the Stage podcast and her work has been featured on ABC, NBC, Forbes, and Entrepreneur.
