Kate was born at a Florence Crittenton home in Kansas City, MO, in 1970 and placed with her adoptive family at 9 days old. She always knew she was adopted and has always wanted to find her family of origin. This was finally made possible when Missouri changed its laws allowing adopted people access to their original birth certificates. She has been in reunion with her mother since 2018, meeting her in person and getting a life-changing hug in 2019. That hug was the first time she had a feeling of being home. Kate is also in reunion with her father's family, who have been welcoming.Reunion has been beautiful, messy, painful, liberating, and the most life-impacting thing Kate has ever experienced. Finding her story and learning about her people, though sometimes painful, has been incredibly grounding, and she now feels like a real person. While finding family has been an overall positive experience, some of the stories have been quite difficult. Her father went on a shooting spree, killing three people, including two police officers, and wounding several more before taking his own life in Harrisonville, MO, in 1972. As luck would have it, she had a chance encounter with an author while visiting his grave for the first time. The author was doing research for a book he was writing about her father. This encounter was instrumental in helping Kate find healing, as it led to factual information about what happened that day in 1972, as well as connections with some of her father's friends, giving her an understanding of the kind of person he was beyond the story he is most remembered for. Kate has been fortunate that her mother was willing to answer all of her questions, even though they were uncomfortable and seemed repetitive. This helped her to understand the decisions made by her grandparents. Had things turned out differently and Kate remained with her natural parents, her name would have been Lisa Simpson, which makes her giggle. The Adoptee's Journey: From Loss and Trauma to Healing and Empowerment by Cameron Lee SmallThank you to our Patreons! Randy Crabtree talks to Lisa Simpson, Vice President of Firm Services at AICPA, on Episode 186 of The Unique CPA. Lisa stresses that essential transformations are needed to ensure a prosperous future for the profession. Fostering a healthy community of accounting professionals and critical shifts in the traditional business model are keys to staying relevant, as are leveraging technology and diversity to drive growth. As talent retention, compensation, and the importance of flexibility remain on the forefront of people's minds, Lisa encourages firm leaders to engage with these topics because unlike the recent past, there won't be another time when accounting students are “falling from the sky.” It will take major adaptations to keep your firm relevant in the coming age of change in the profession. In today's episode, we see that young love can be just as heartbreaking and nuanced as any adult relationship - especially if the people concerned have stayed at the age of eight for 35years... which is exactly the state of play for Lisa Simpson and her bad boy love interest Nelson Muntz. Yes, that right, we're going all the way back to the golden year of 1996, when our saxophone playing precocious genius, Lisa had her head turned by the local tearaway, Nelson, and for that we have writer, comedian and internet sensation, Benedict Townsend to thank! Haaahaa! According to the 'The Simpsons' Lisa and Nelson were never meant to be, but what happens to our star-crossed lovers beyond Springfield? Is there more than meets the eye to this story? Perhaps so, and there are dramatisations aplenty in this ep to illustrate what really happened in this sweet tale of first crushes... "AcademyHealth supports, amplifies, and represents the interests of a diverse and talented field that is perfectly positioned to answer that call. Stepping into this leadership role is a dream opportunity to work with some of the best minds in health research and policy and to make a real difference in American health care." Dr. Carroll assumes the role of President and CEO from Dr. Lisa Simpson, who will step down in March. Under Dr. Simpson's leadership, AcademyHealth made a public commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, expanded its influence in Washington, and built robust portfolios of work to support innovation in data, workforce, research impact, and learning health systems. "As a long serving AcademyHealth Board member, I am pleased that the selection committee was sensitive to the importance of choosing a leader who has demonstrated a commitment to evidence generation that advances the fight for health equity across all population groups” said Dr. Reed Tuckson, a cofounder of the Black Coalition Against COVID. "AcademyHealth and its stakeholder community of scholars have provided leadership and practical evidence-based guidance in this increasingly important field and I am confident that Dr. Carroll's leadership, intellect, and communication expertise will help advance this work into the future." Dr. Carroll will assume his new role on March 18, 2024. “Lisa the Drama Queen” (January 25, 2009) So here's an interesting one. In its twentieth season, The Simpson did an episode inspired by Heavenly Creatures, the 1994 Peter Jackson movie that has Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey playing schoolgirls who flee into a fantasy world and also each other. More than a decade later, this story would play out again, only with Lisa Simpson and a new character voiced by Emily Blunt, and that might seem like a strange combo, especially because the Simpson version nixes the sex and violence of the original, but it nonetheless works. Special thanks to the writer of this episode, Brian Kelley, for sharing his memories of how this episode came to be. For a limited time, you can still screen Heavenly Creatures via the GEE Patreon, but that window is closing. Info here.
