Superheroes, Movies & Superhero Movies: A Cinema Heroes Podcast
After many years (The Flash TV show premiered and ended between when this movie was announced and when it was released), we finally got to see The Flash in his first solo movie. Reprising his role from Justice League, Ezra Miller plays Barry Allen who is frustrated after another attempt to help his wrongly imprisoned father fails. Realizing he can run fast enough to travel back in time (farther than he did (or thought possible) in Zack Snyder's Justice League), he plans to go back and save both his parents, despite a warning from Bruce Wayne that he could "destroy everything." Loosely based on the Flashpoint comic, which is a strange story to adapt for his first solo film, The Flash finds himself in a world he doesn't recognize and must figure out a way to set things right again. Check out what the guys think and let us know what you think of The Flash! Cinema Heroes YouTube Instagram
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for information about all your favorite fictional Universes. Milly Alcock will show us her superhero landing when Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow premieres on June 26, 2026. Other than Sasha Calle's portrayal in The Flash, this means we'll see Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El on the big screen for the first time since 1984. The film will be released just a year after we see James Gunn's vision for the man of steel himself. In a move that seems telling of the new direction of MCU, the Marvel Television banner has been reintroduced and will be used for live action series such as Daredevil: Born Again, Agatha All Along, and Ironheart. The banner was previously used for MCU-adjacent shows Agents of SHIELD, Cloak & Dagger, and others. Brad Winderbaum, head of TV, streaming, and animation for Marvel Studios, said the idea is to let audiences know they can “jump in anywhere” in the MCU and still understand what's going on. Winderbaum also alluded to a Marvel Studios rebrand that encompasses Marvel Television, Marvel Animation, and Marvel Spotlight. HBO's streaming service Max released a teaser trailer for the upcoming Dune television spinoff show, Dune: Prophecy. The show is described as taking place 10,000 years before the events that lead to Paul Atreides' rise to emperor and will follow two Harkonnen sisters as they work to establish the Bene Gesserit. Inspired by the book Sisterhood of Dune, the show has mostly been kept under wraps until now. Movie goers probably should have bought a ticket for themselves and their imaginary friends last weekend as John Krasinski's new film IF didn't quite reach expectations with a $35 million opening in the U.S. Although this means it took first place at the box office, the movie cost $110 million to make and a global box office of $55 million is still a stumble. There may be hope yet for the kid-centered flick with a lot of schools across the country ready to enter summer break. Hot off the heels of an incredibly well received first season of X-Men '97, Marvel Studios seems to have found the voice of their live-action X-Men in screenwriter Michael Lesslie. Lesslie's writing credits include Assassin's Creed, The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, as well as the upcoming Now You See Me 3. While both parties are still in talks, if the addition pans out, it will be the most significant step to actualizing the X-Men in the MCU since Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019. Poker Face and Russian Doll star Natasha Lyonne has joined the cast of Fantastic Four in an undisclosed role. Lionsgate is developing a John Wick spinoff movie around Donnie Yen's assassin character, Caine. Yen will reprise his John Wick: Chapter 4 role in the untitled project set to shoot in Hong Kong in 2025. The franchise expanding film, with no director yet announced, will follow the events of John Wick 4 as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table. 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore is officially getting a sequel at Netflix with Adam Sandler returning to reprise his role. Amazon's Marvel drama Silk: Spider Society — from Sony Pictures Television — is no longer moving forward at the streamer but Sony does plan to shop the series to another studio or streaming service. Sony Pictures announced last week that I Know What You Did Last Summer, a reboot of the film with the same name as the original 1997 horror slasher, is set for theatrical release domestically on July 18, 2025. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will direct and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze, Jr. are currently in early talks to return. Last week, Disney announced that Hulu is teaming with the estate of author James Clavell to extend the FX series Shōgun for two additional seasons. A writer's room is currently being assembled. Shōgun is currently the most viewed show in FX's history.

The film tells the story of Feña, a trans man that has a wild day including running into an ex, dealing with estranged family, and the overall challenges of being a young person navigating life and transitions. Lío's critically acclaimed performance in Mutt earned them the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award in Acting, making them the first trans actor to ever win the award. Most recently, Lío returned to Sundance 2024, starring opposite Leslie Grace, Sasha Calle, and Residente in In the Summers, which won the festival's top honor of Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. The Worst of 2023 continues with a discussion of the polarizing film The Flash starring real-life criminal Ezra Miller. Resident comic book expert Josh Kotsabasakis joins the guys to discuss the film and attempt to avoid as many real-life Ezra references as possible. Why does this movie have so much spaghetti? Are the CGI babies the worst? And what about the rest of the CGI? Does this movie not even have a real villain? What the hell does "re-alive" mean? How was Michael Keaton as Batman? All this and more in (ironically) one of the longer episodes in a while. Next week: a fairly serious film... What We've Been Watching: Saltburn "Earthworm Jim" "Curb Your Enthusiasm" Questions? After lengthy delays due to director turnover, the pandemic, studio shake-ups, and behind-the-scenes drama featuring its lead actor, DC Comics' Scarlet Speedster finally raced onto movie screens this past summer. Director Andy Muscetti helmed the pic, staring Ezra Miller as a Barry Allen who goes back in time to meet another Barry Allen, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Ben Affleck as Batman and also bringing Michael Keaton back as Batman. Despite bringing back your Dad's Batman and boasting a multiverse of meta-references, the film failed to find success in the Father's Day frame and fizzled out, making less than its production budget at the domestic box office. This all but sealed the fate of the DCEU, with James Gunn taking the reins. But don't despair! This week we're going back to the future, just like in that classic Eric Stoltz film, while we bring out all our favourite superheroes and CG the crap out of them, all while discussing the latest entry in the DCEU ‘The Flash'. The Flash is a 2023 American superhero film based on the DC character of the same name. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, Double Dream, and the Disco Factory, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures,[6] it is the 13th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash alongside Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, and Michael Keaton. In the film, Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother's death, which brings unintended consequences.
The trio get back on the saddle to discuss what looks to be the final piece of the DCEU, The Flash. With its poor showing at the box office, the group asks the question - did the film deserve to fail?

In this loose adaptation of the classic Flashpoint storyline, Barry goes back in time to try and save his mother, who was killed when Barry was a child. Instead, he winds up in a parallel universe and the threat of General Zod played by Michael Shannon. Sasha Calle stars as Supergirl. Marshall Harris of CBS Chicago rejoins the podcast to discuss what went right with the film, and what went wrong. There is not much debate as Harris shares the belief that this film had a plethora of issues. The guys discuss Ezra Miller's performance in The Flash, and the overall state of films based on DC Comics. They discuss DC Co-Chair James Gunn's endorsement of the film and the mixed reaction from fans in the early days of the movie's release.

Episode 186!? This week we're switching things up and giving your thoughts on The Flash! The Flash is a 2023 American superhero film based on the DC character of the same name. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, Double Dream, and the Disco Factory, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is the 13th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The development of a film based on The Flash began in the late 1980s, with multiple writers and directors attached to the project through 2014. The film was then redeveloped as a part of the DCEU, with Miller cast as the title character. Multiple directors were attached to the film over the following years, with Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa, and the duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein all departing the project over creative differences. Muschietti and Hodson joined the film in July 2019, and pre-production began in January 2020. The film is influenced by the comic book storyline Flashpoint, featuring multiple DC characters, including Ben Affleck and Keaton reprising their respective versions of Batman. Principal photography took place from April to October 2021 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden and on location around the United Kingdom. The Flash premiered at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on June 12, 2023, and was released in the United States on June 16, following multiple delays caused by director changes, the COVID-19 pandemic, post-production setbacks and controversies surrounding Miller. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its plot, action sequences, humor, and performances (particularly of Miller and Keaton), but criticism for the quality of its visual effects and screenplay. Welcome to our review for THE FLASH. We are joined by Philip Guillet as well as Joe Vitale from The Vintage Geeks Podcast. Warner Bros. Pictures presents “The Flash,” directed by Andy Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”). Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero's first-ever standalone feature film.Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he's looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry's only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?“The Flash” ensemble also includes rising star Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon (“Bullet Train,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”), Ron Livingston (“Loudermilk,” “The Conjuring”), Maribel Verdú (“Elite,” “Y tu mamá también”), Kiersey Clemons (“Zack Snyder's Justice League,” “Sweetheart”), Antje Traue (“King of Ravens,” “Man of Steel”) and Michael Keaton (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Batman”).“The Flash” is produced by Barbara Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”) and Michael Disco (“Rampage,” “San Andreas”). The screenplay is by Christina Hodson (“Birds of Prey,” “Bumblebee”), with a screen story by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein (“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Joby Harold (“Transformers:Rise of the Beasts,” “Army of the Dead”), based on characters from DC. The executive producers are Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Marianne Jenkins.Joining director Muschietti behind the camera are director of photography Henry Braham (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “The Suicide Squad”), production designer Paul Denham Austerberry (“IT Chapter Two,” “The Shape of Water”), editors Jason Ballantine (the “IT” films, “The Great Gatsby”) and Paul Machliss (“The Gentlemen,” “Baby Driver”), and costume designer Alexandra Byrne (“Doctor Strange,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”); the score is by Benjamin Wallfisch (“The Invisible Man,” the “IT” films).Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Double Dream/a Disco Factory production of an Andy Muschietti film, “The Flash.” It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to open in theaters in North America on June 16, 2023 and internationally beginning 14 June 2023.

Editors - Jason Ballantine ACE and Paul Machliss ACE While THE FLASH editors Jason Ballantine ACE and Paul Machliss ACE* both hail from Australia, this latest entry in the DCEU would be their first time meeting one another. Both editors have been advancing their careers away from their homeland for quite some time. Jason has worked in LA for the past ten years, while Paul has been in London for the last twenty. The director who would be responsible for bringing these two together is Andy Muschietti, Jason's director for IT (2017) and IT CHAPTER TWO (2019). The two editors split editing duties pretty much down the middle for THE FLASH, each taking five of the film's ten reels. One thing that did separate them for much of the film's development was geography. While Jason was holding down the fort at Warner Brothers Studios in LA, Paul was on location in the UK for seven months, assembling main unit footage with Muschietti. Following production, Machliss would join Jason in LA for six additional months of editing. And it would be six more months before Ballantine would put the final touches on the highly anticipated "metahuman" movie. Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, THE FLASH is the thirteenth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen (The Flash) alongside Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston and Maribel Verdú. In the film, Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother's death, which traps him in an alternate reality without metahumans. Barry enlists the help of; his younger self, an older Batman and the Kryptonian castaway Supergirl in order to save this world from General Zod and return to his universe. JASON BALLANTINE ACE Jason Ballantine began his editing career in the horror genre (one which he would return to often) with the Australian thriller WOLF CREEK (2005). From there he would edit other fright flicks, such as PROM NIGHT (2008), CRUSH (2009) and NEEDLE (2010). But it would be his work on director Andy Muschietti's adaptation of Stephen King's IT (2017) and IT: CHAPTER TWO (2019) that would put an exclamation point on Jason's work in the horror medium. Jason has also previously teamed up with directors Baz Luhrmann and Matthew Vaughn for THE GREAT GATSBY (2013) and THE KING'S MAN (2021) respectively. PAUL MACHLISS ACE While known most prominently for his work with Edgar Wright; SPACED (1999-2001), SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD (2010), THE WORLD'S END (2013), BABY DRIVER (2017) and LAST NIGHT IN SOHO (2021), Paul also edited; the pilot episode of FLEABAG (2016), eighteen episodes of THE IT CROWD (2006-2008) and films such as THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING (2019) and THE GENTLEMEN (2019). For his work on BABY DRIVER, Paul was nominated for an Oscar® alongside co-editor John Amos. * [Publisher's Note] The guests wish to express their regret and apologies for using he/him pronouns in referencing Ezra Miller (they/them). No disrespect was intended toward Ezra or anyone else. Director: Andy Muschietti Writers: Christina Hodsonn, Joby Harold Starring: Sasha Calle, Ben Affleck, Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Michael Shannon Runtime: 2 hour 24 minutes Synopsis: Barry Allen uses his super speed to change the past, but his attempt to save his family creates a world without super heroes, forcing him to race for his life in order to save the future. Let's start off with an apology to Michael Keaton. For decades now there have been debates over which actor is truly the best Batman and for decades Mr. Keaton has been disrespected and written off in that debate. If there is one good thing to say about this Flash movie it's that it has solidified Michael Keaton as THEE Batman that all others should live up to. Hands down. There is so much wrong with this movie (starting with a problematic and horribly miscast lead) but between Michael Keaton putting this movie on his back and Sasha Calle's criminally underused Supergirl, it's at least worth checking out. But let's make no mistake. Ezra Miller is one of the biggest problems with this film. Even outside of Miller's very disturbing and troubling criminal issues, Ezra was always miscast as Barry Allen. And now with this solo movie, there's two of them in this film and well, it just makes the miscast even more pronounce. A bad lead, terrible CG and a script that takes the worst storylines from the Flash TV show and somehow do them even worse. That's what plagues this movie. But Keaton...Mr. Bruce Wayne...is good enough to keep this from being a complete disaster. Recast Ezra or do whatever. Just give me a full Batman film with Keaton as Batman. Give THAT to us. Oh and give Sasha Calle her Supergirl movie so she can properly shine. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! We are fast approaching the second movie adaptation of Supergirl with Sasha Calle appearing in The Flash 2023. But before Sasha Calle and even Laura Vandervoort from Smallville and Melissa Benoist in the Arrowverse there was the 1984 movie. Set in the Christopher Reeve Superman universe it sees Helen Slater take on the role in a truely bizarre adventure which is entirely divorced from reality and logic. Is it good? No. Is it weird?
