[School of Everything Else 2017] NOTE: This is an archival episode from many years ago. Recently the excellent YouTube series Every Frame a Painting asked members of the public if they could hum any of the music from the Marvel films. Unsurprisingly they couldn't come up with anything. There are a few reasons for this, that I go into on the show, but this presentation right here is crafted to allow everyone to explore the music that has come so far. We laser-focus on the core melodies, the hero themes that were left by the wayside as the series evolved and we showcase the wide range of actually rather brilliant musical moments that have punctuated the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Join me for an epic, three hour musical journey, run through the filter of my brain. By the end, if I've done my job, you'll be able to hum at least one piece of Marvel music. 1. Marvel Logo (Thor: The Dark World) 2. Back in Black – AC/DC (Iron Man) 3. Mark II/Driving With the Top Down/Gulmira - Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man) 4. Iron Man - Black Sabbath (Iron Man) 5. John and Craig welcome back Ryan Reynolds for an in-depth look at his creative process bringing the character of Deadpool to the screen. As co-writer, producer and star of the Deadpool franchise, Ryan leads us through his first introduction to the character, the rough journey getting to greenlight, and the challenges presented by an often-faceless protagonist. Along the way, they talk tone and dialogue, collaboration and rule-breaking, respect and irreverence, and the importance of listening to the movie. Ryan also has some writing questions for John and Craig. In our bonus segment for premium members, we look at Ryan's flair for marketing and the creative freedom he's found in advertising. In this compendium episode, John and Craig look at two of the most fundamental building blocks of compelling stories – conflict and stakes. We define six forms of conflict common in movies, and explore ways to sustain conflict within a scene and throughout a story. We also look for ways to find the root of your character's stakes, pick the right stakes for the world around them, and the importance of making everything personal. God jul, podpeople! This week, embark on a musical journey with Nicolas Humberto Repetto, a composer whose roots trace back to Argentina before finding a new home in sunny Florida at the tender age of five. His enchantment with music, especially the violin, as well as his gift for composition and orchestration, bloomed during his formative middle school years. The intoxicating harmonies of triumph and the seductive allure of composition and orchestration beckoned Nicolas to the sprawling landscapes of LA. Here, he delved deeper into his passion for film scoring, skillfully merging it with cutting-edge technology. Discover the riveting tale of how Nicolás Humberto Repetto sculpted the original score for a new feature documentary, “A Run for More,” which made it's debut on Apple Music, May 3, 2023, followed by a widespread digital release. This cinematic masterpiece, directed by Pulitzer Prize-winner, Ray Whitehouse, unravels the compelling narrative of Frankie Gonzales-Wolfe—a transgender luminary vying for a seat in the San Antonio city council. Tim and Tay talk comedy (Apatow & otherwise), late '90s pop, and board games in this episode that looks at Game Night. This recent comedy breathed fresh air into the genre by returning to a few simple techniques while updating a few dated tropes. Max & Annie's weekly game night is kicked into high gear when Max's visiting brother Brooks arranges for a fake kidnapping. The three couples playing the game soon find out that it and Brooks are more than they appear, leading them on a chaotic night of fun, danger, and more. Game Night was directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, stars Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, and Kyle Chandler, and debuted on February 23, 2018. Tagline — "This is not a game."Game Night is available as a digital rental.Scene (32:25-36:36 & 42:40-44:51)After tracking down Brooks to a local dive bar, Max and Annie enter the joint to scope it out. Thinking that it is all part of the game night, they humorously build up the confidence to hold up the three men in the bar who appear to be holding Brooks hostage, forcing them to the floor with Pulp Fiction-inspired vigor. There is a scene break that catches the audience up with the other two couples and when we return to the bar, Max and Annie recover the keys from one of the thugs. Brooks tries to tell them that this is not part of the game, but Max and Annie only realize this after Annie shoots the supposedly fake gun in the air. Dropping it in surprise recoil, the gun goes off again, shooting Max in the arm before the three are chased out of the building.Links7:30 - Bateman originally slated to direct7:40 - Rewriting the script9:50 - Assuming the worst for Game Night13:50 - "How To Do Visual Comedy" (Every Frame a Painting) 29:50 - Developing female characters33:00 - Why Bateman prefers being the straight man48:00 - Filming with an R1 arm & the "GTA shot"RecommendationsTim: Akira (Otomo, 1988). Photographers are constantly managing tradeoffs. One creative choice for an image invariably comes at the cost of something else. Every frame we capture contains a compromise. Photographers learn this early on our path to mastering photography. The exposure triangle - aperture, shutter speed, ISO - teaches us this lesson. Adjust one, the others are affected. There are plenty of other compromises we make with each and every photo. Some are technical, some are compositional, some might even be financial. So how best to manage the tradeoffs? Anchor your creative choices around the story of your photo, and manage the ripples of the artistic decisions as best you can.I have more thoughts on this episode of The Stop Down Photography Podcast.Read an interesting and entertaining backstory of why we have the 24 frames per second video standard. Episode 91 - Millennial Thematic Universe After the video, “MARVEL SYMPHONIC UNIVERSE” by Every Frame A Painting went viral on Youtube in 2016, Christopher Coleman sat down with three family members who are a part of the “Millennial” generation to: talk about their feelings about film, tv, and game music, see how much film music they recognize, and which film composers they are familiar with. The resulting conversation is an entertaining peek into some of the ways this generation relates to much of the music attached to today's films, TV shows, and video games. [School of Everything Else 2017] Recently the excellent YouTube series Every Frame a Painting asked members of the public if they could hum any of the music from the Marvel films. 1. The Diogenes Club Podcast: for the love of Buffy and other awesome.
The holidays are already upon us, and so is the end of the first season of Buffy! In today's episode, we discuss the might, myth, and legendary themes in Buffy Season 1 Episode 12 Prophecy Girl: Wherein Buffy, Slayer of the Vampires, Breaks the First Rule of Slaying. This one is a heavy hitter, so we run a bit long. We dive right in with some further observations about the use of the color red, and then later get into a lengthy discussion about the nature of the slayer and vampire in Buffy lore. We also get to a seasonally appropriate subject and how it parallels Buffy's choices in this episode. Please make sure to comment, email us at info@diogenesclubpodcast.com, and share us with anyone who will enjoy what we do. Above all, make sure to be extraordinarily good to yourselves and those you care about this holiday season. Episode 12 - Reacting to "The Marvel Symphonic Universe" Tony Zhou's Youtube channel "Every Frame a Painting" recently posted one of their most viewed videos to date, "The Marvel Symphonic Universe" where the MCU's original scores are critiqued and demonstrated to be "forgettable" by the general public. Erik and Christopher react and discuss several of the key points made in the video essay ... some of which they agree with but several of which they do not. Is the music of the Marvel Cinematic Universe truly forgettable? If so, why?
