Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking! We talk a lot about leading through uncertainty on this podcast.  But in this episode, the emphasis will be on navigating uncertainty in our own lives.  In this conversation, Michaela O'Donnell and Lisa Slayton, co-authors of Life in Flux, discuss the importance of "uncommon postures" when navigating the fog in life, building personal adaptive capacity, and the need to pause and listen in the midst of uncertainty.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Lisa Slayton challenges default behaviors and encourages developing uncommon postures to better support oneself.Michaela O'Donnell emphasizes the need to embrace change rather than avoid it, recognizing that old methods won't work for future challenges.Slayton identifies personal awakening catalysts as recognizing potential possibilities or facing pain and disruptions.Adaptive work involves recognizing that past methods won't suffice for future challenges, according to Michaela O'Donnell. The metaphor of a ship in the fog illustrates the need for intentional stillness in uncertain times.Slayton describes how cutting the engine in a fog-bound boat is a counterintuitive but necessary action to regain direction.Markus Watson reflects on personal experiences with uncertainty, realizing challenges can be embraced even when they are "unfigureoutable."Slayton shares an experience with a church team and stresses the importance of exploration and adaptation.Navigating ambiguity involves recognizing multiple paths forward, not just one clear solution, notes Michaela O'Donnell.Leadership should shift from problem-solving to curiosity, embracing uncertainty and adaptive learning.Markus Watson discusses the clarity of identity in understanding personal strengths and aligning roles accordingly. The Enneagram aids in understanding personal and leadership styles amidst change, recognizing strengths and limits.Lisa Slayton emphasizes the challenges pastors face due to excessive expectations and the need for managing these effectively.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Church Leadership InstituteDe Pree Center for LeadershipTamim PartnersLifeinFlux.coFlourish San DiegoBooks mentioned:Life in Flux, by Michaela O'Donnell and Lisa SlaytonRelated Episodes:Episode 114: Meaningful Work, with Michaela O'DonnellEpisode 48: Integrity and Coherence in Leadership, with Lisa SlaytonDid you know Spiritual Life and Leadership has been named the #1 Spiritual Leadership Podcast by the Feedspot Podcasters Database? Murdoch Charitable Trust and author of The Seamless Life.To think of our lives as “incoherent” is to live our lives in compartments.  But Steven Garber says we don't have to choose, for example, between being a scientist and a Christian.  Both are part of our coherent self.John Newton, the slave trader who wrote “Amazing Grace,” for many years lived a compartmentalized incoherent life. When Steven Garber was a young man discovering the invitation to “coherence” in his life, he realized that he was going to have to rethink how he thought about girls!Tamim is the Hebrew word for integrity or coherence.Seamlessness has to do with identity. The question of vocation, according to Steven Garber, always begins with Who am I?  And the next question is Why am I?Vocation is integral (not incidental) to the missio dei, to the very meaning of God's work in the world.Pastors can begin to live more integral and seamless lives by being mindful of the teachers they listen to and follow.  Are our teachers, not only speaking words of coherence, but living lives of coherence and seamlessness?RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Website:Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation, and CultureBooks mentioned:The Seamless Life, by Steve GarberVisions of Vocation, by Steve GarberCaptain Blood, by Rafael SabatiniAuthors mentioned:John StottLeslie NewbiginAugustine of HippoHelmut ThielickeRelated episodes:Episode 48: Integrity and Coherence in Leadership, with Lisa Slayton, CEO of Tamim PartnersEpisode 77: To Know the World and Still Love It, with Steven Garber, author of Visions of VocationLearn how to lead your church into ministry that matters. In a broken and confusing world, it is realy hard to know the right thing to do. In this episode, Lisa Slayton doesn’t come with a bunch of clear-cut answers, but she does raise the right questions. And I think she points in the right direction. We need to become people of integrity, people who live lives of coherence. The Hebrew word for this is tamim. Lisa Slayton, the CEO of Tamim Partners, works with leaders and organizations to help them live from a place of integrity and coherence.THIS EPISODE’S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Lisa Slayton is the CEO of Tamim Partners.Tamim is a Hebrew word often translated as “perfect” or “blameless.” A better translation might be “wholeheartedness,” “integrity,” or “coherence.”Lisa suggests that shalom is an outward expression of wholeness and tamim refers to an inner wholeness that is required for true shalom.Lisa Slayton had previously been the CEO of the Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation. We live in a VUCA world: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity. In order to best coach an organization and/or its leader, it is critical to look at the systems.Leaders can’t rely on “best practices” anymore.Pastors today have not been given the tools or resources to lead in these times of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.Lisa is committed to the Made to Flourish pastors’ network.Tamim Partners has for key values: integrity, hospitality, learning, and relationships.Integrity has to do with living integrated, coherent lives.Leaders often push themselves to the point of dis-integration and in-coherence.An axiom Lisa shares: “What we know gets in the way of what we need to learn.”When a leaders says, “I just don’t know what to do,” that’s when the leader is ready to begin truly learning.Much of what Lisa has shared is reminiscent of the previous two episodes of Spiritual Life and Leadership:Episode 46: Inviting the Real, with Esther Lightcap Meek, author of A Little Manual for KnowingEpisode 47: Leadership, Anxiety, and Family Systems, with Steve Cuss, author of Managing Leadership Anxiety RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKSBooks mentioned: A Failure of Nerve by Edwin FriedmanManaging Leadership Anxiety by Steve CussA Little Manual for Knowingby Esther Lightcap MeekTamim Parnters: Website: http://www.tamimpartners.comTo leave a review of Spiritual Life and Leadership: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/spiritual-life-and-leadership/id1435252632— Links to Amazon are affiliate links.
