This sermon was preached by Pastor Kyle Huber at Greentree Church on November10, 2024. Scripture: 1 Peter 5:1-4
I had a coworker who was like sandpaper for me. Every time my slack would ding with their name, I would just feel a pang of “ugh”. Have you ever felt that? Truthfully, if you work with people long enough, someone will be this for you…and this might be inevitable at some point in any relationship. I decided to start with donuts. I knew she obsessed over donuts, and I thought maybe some time outside of work talk would do us some good. So I asked her to go for donuts. After that donut shop meeting, her messages did not send me into groan mode. This is the magic of connection! Connection is the glue of healthy leadership. Start with understanding your personality and values to connect with others. Then move to understanding others. Without connection, we start to feel untethered from the goals of an organization and the team. Every relationship doesn't have to include donut shop meetings. But as a leader, you MUST connect with people for your work and team to be effective. In this episode I'm sharing three tips to help you work torward connection. With so much collective anxiety around this election time in the U.S., you may be noticing your team struggling with the connection piece right now. I invite you to sit down and have real conversations. Show your authentic self and be genuinely curious about your team members. You can transform your leadership style and your team this way. It's time to make every workplace a more joy-filled space, starting now! Here's what we talked about: 08:18 Building trust requires communication and connection together 10:14 Disconnection reduces productivity 14:13 Solid connections require self-understanding and presence 19:15 How to be vulnerable and authentic as a leader 25:50 Explore Joyosity for joyful, productive workplace connections 27:23 How to use curiosity to become a better leader Links/ Resources: The Free 99 Step: Joyosity Explorer Map http://jennwhitmer.com/joyosity-explorer will guide you to understanding the deeper purpose and story you tell yourself about your work. Guest post by Anna Eliatamby is Director of Healthy Leadership, CIC and co-author with Grazia Lomonte of Healing-Self Care for Leaders and their Teams, out now and available on Amazon Organisations, regardless of size, are fragile social systems of people and the accompanying relationships. The culture is the collective social system and equally delicate. Just the presence of one bully can disrupt the social system and the culture. Clearly, when more than one person, or worse, a group, torments others, the impact of bullying is significantly amplified. Why you need to address workplace bullying The bottom line Regardless of how organizations define their bottom line - from financial to social and environmental - it is affected by negative behaviours. The American Psychological Association estimated the cost of bullying to be near $300 billion. The National University of Ireland, Galway estimated that the cost to the national economy of Ireland is 239 million euros per year. And workplace bullying causes the loss of 1.7 million days of work. There are many other effects of tolerating bullying. When people experience bullying or witness it, they are affected. They will have high levels of stress and fear, waiting for that next moment or comment. Their ability to focus and concentrate, think clearly and make good decisions deteriorates. They lose self-esteem and motivation and energy. This then affects their ability to be productive and even creative. They will not feel loyal to the organisation. Some will become more vulnerable to mental health problems, such as higher levels of anxiety and depression. Physical health can be affected. As people's health deteriorates, the cost to the organisation's health insurance will increase. People will spend time and effort avoiding the bully or bullies. Or not work so hard, just doing the bare minimum. Presenteeism increases. People can spend more than half their time focussed, not on work but on avoidance or seeking support or looking for other jobs. As people leave because of the bullying and associated negativity, then the costs of recruitment increase. It can take nine months of a salary to recruit into a position. Reputational damage can occur, especially if an employee takes legal action. When this happens, the company will incur legal costs. Bullying Is ongoing and repeated. And includes behaviours that are harmful from banter to sidelining, withholding key information, abusing power and to more significant acts such as physical aggression. It can be direct or indirect. For example, a group of individuals would deliberately falsify information about a manager and then ensure that they could not carry out their tasks. Humiliation is often the aim. Anyone has the propensity to bully, except that most of us choose not to. Bullies can be insecure, have experienced bullying themselves, lack management expertise, and not know what else to do. They may want to gain power and authority to feel in control. Often, they continue their bullying because no one will address their actions and help them change. Tacit reinforcement. Those who are bullied often possess competence and ability, but they may lack self-confidence or appear vulnerable. Bullies sense this and exploit it. The perpetrators often are emotionally intelligent but choose to misuse this skill. Reclaiming the bottom line Starts with admitting the presence of bullying behaviour. Acknowledging its deleterious impact and then deciding to act to address it, beyond gathering data on its incidence. This will take courage as most will avoid doing something because it is frightening, and they feel they lack the skills or ability. However, if you decide to act, then you learn that you already possess the people skills and fortitude to act. It also requires persistence because the bullies won't believe your intentions at first. Ensure that the message is clear to one and all. It is time for healthy, decent and supportive relationships, e...

Church planters have the opportunity to set their culture for all sorts of leadership practices including empowering the next generation, developing women, and creating systems of accountability. Kadi Cole and Chestly discuss all of these critical topics and why church planters need to think hard and plan carefully so that they don't end up perpetuating the example of many established churches that often fail in these areas.Resources mentioned in this episode:MomentumMarketplace.orgKadiCole.comNewBreedTraining.comMissionByBusiness.com
In this teaching, we learn that healthy leadership in the church is based on Christ-like character and conduct that is shaped by the gospel.
In this sermon, we explored 1 Timothy 3, focusing on the theme of "Healthy Leadership in the Church." The Apostle Paul provides a blueprint for church leadership, emphasizing the importance of Christ-like character and conduct. This is crucial not only for those in pastoral roles but for every believer, as it equips us for good works and helps us discern what to expect from our leaders. Paul’s instructions to Timothy highlight the need for leaders who are above reproach, faithful, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, and able to teach. These qualities are not just for leaders but are characteristics that all Christians should strive to embody. Paul's message is particularly relevant today, given the numerous instances of fallen church leaders. It’s essential to understand that leadership in the church is not about charisma but about character. Leaders should set the pace for godliness, and their lives should reflect the gospel's transformative power. This understanding helps us identify potential leaders within our community and informs our prayers and decisions when choosing a church. Paul also addresses the role of deacons, who, like elders, must exhibit Christ-like character. While deacons are not required to teach, they play a vital role in serving the church and supporting the elders. The qualifications for both roles overlap significantly, emphasizing the importance of a well-ordered life, hospitality, and a healthy home environment. Healthy leadership is foundational for a healthy church. We must value character over charisma and cultivate Christ-like qualities in our lives. This not only strengthens our faith but also ensures that we are led by individuals who genuinely reflect the heart of Christ.

When I see a leader who is thriving, I notice someone who has a consistent thread in their life of energy and enthusiasm. They are willing to explore with courage. Thriving in leadership is about the choices we make, not the situation we live in.We choose to make choices that enable us to thrive.: 8 questions derived initially from Dr Laurie Schreiner's content (Thriving Quotient) that will open your mind to see your willingness to pursue thriving: 1. Can I identify that I am actively engaged in a learning process?2. Am I putting in the necessary effort to reach my important goals?3. Am I effectively managing my time and commitments?4. Am I connecting with others in healthy and positive ways? 5. Am I optimistic about the future? 6. Am I positive about the choices I am presently making?7. How can I tell that I appreciate differences in others?8. Am I committed to enriching my community? You can find me at Unleash Your Potential at Healthy Leadership with Dr. Nina Ellison | Home

Language builds culture. Recently on the podcast, I shared 5 timeless leadership axioms - portable and powerful phrases that have become adopted by emotionally healthy leaders all around the world. For example..."Jesus may be in your heart, but grandpa is in your bones". It's an easier (and more playful) way of getting at the truth that everyone is deeply affected by their family of origin, going back hundreds of years. Today on the podcast, I continue this series by sharing 5 new axioms that I believe you will find helpful. These leadership sayings are extremely useful to adopt as you build a healthy team and church culture. I pray you will memorize them, ponder them, and make space to allow the biblical truth to penetrate you.

Movements with longevity are sustained through shared, easily understood language. This most often comes through the development of axioms - short, memorable phrases that capture the essence of truth in simple ways. Reflecting on the last two decades of leading Emotionally Healthy Discipleship, I've been able to identify at least 10 core axioms (probably more like 25!) that have stood the test of time. In many ways, they are a "cliff-notes" introduction to an emotionally healthy church culture. In today's podcast, I share the first 5 timeless axioms that have shaped the culture of what we call Emotionally Healthy Leadership. (ie. "Jesus may be in your heart, but grandpa is in your bones." If you are a leader, these axioms are extremely helpful to use with your teams as simple ways to build a healthy team and church culture. I pray you will memorize them, ponder them, and make space to allow the biblical truth to penetrate you.

How do we know if a church is healthy? Should we look at average attendance, the number of conversions, the size of the offerings, or some other metric? Dr. David K. Bernard looks to the Book of Acts to identify the vital signs of a healthy Apostolic church. His answer provides a New Testament template that pastors and ministry leaders can use to determine how their congregation compares with the early church. In this episode, Dr. Bernard references his book Spiritual Leadership in the Twenty-First Century, available at PentecostalPublishing.com.If you enjoy this podcast, leave a five-star rating and a review on iTunes or your preferred podcast platform. Wade Berzas and Jeff Benton, professional implementers with the Entrepreneurial Operating System, known as EOS Worldwide, are our guests. EOS focuses on Vision (everyone on the same page), Traction (focus and discipline), and Healthy (Leadership.) Wade was originally a guest on Discover Lafayette in December 2021. To this day, he has been our most popular guest for all who have been inspired by his faith and journey. Wade survived a horrific plane crash in a flight that lasted just 48 seconds as it descended on the travelers' journey to watch LSU in the Peach Bowl in December 2019. Wade Berzas and Jeff Benton both have coaching skills and life experiences that enable them to teach businesses about this proven EOS process to reach their fullest potential. There are six key components that EOS utilizes as it works with entrepreneurial leaders: Vision, People, Data, Issues, Process, and Traction. Rather than apply spot-treatment style consulting that only solves one piece of the growth puzzle – EOS is a proven holistic coaching approach that is simple to follow and transforms companies into total growth engines. In this podcast, we hear humorous anecdotal evidence about how business leaders can hit a wall that prevents advancement to the next level of success. EOS Worldwide utilizes timeless techniques that enable entrepreneurs to reach previously unimaginable success.
