Les Brown and his twin brother were born on the floor of an abandoned building in Liberty City, a low-income section of Miami, Florida. Their birth mother, married at the time to a soldier stationed overseas, had become pregnant by another man and went to Miami secretly to give birth and three weeks later, she gave them away. He was adopted by Mamie Brown, a 38-year-old single woman who worked as a cafeteria attendant and domestic assistant. As a child, Brown was finding it impossible to concentrate and was labelled "educable mentally retarded" in the fifth grade which damaged his self-esteem and confidence. While in high school, Brown used to fantasize about being on stage speaking to thousands of people. After high school, Brown was firmly intent on becoming a DJ, he learned all he could about the workings of a radio station. One day, when a disc jockey became drunk on the air and Brown was the only other person at the station, he filled in at the microphone. Impressed, the owner of the station promoted Brown to part-time and then full-time disc jockey. In the late 1960s, Brown moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he had a top-rated radio program and was eventually given added duties as broadcast manager. This new level of influence inspired Brown to become more socially and politically conscious, urging his listeners to political action. After being terminated from the radio station, he ran for election in the Ohio House of Representatives and won. After leaving the Ohio State Legislature, he shifted his career to television and became a host on PBS. From September to Nov 1993, he hosted a talk show, The Les Brown Show. When he entered the motivational speaking arena in the mid-1980s, he had virtually nothing, having moved to Detroit with his clothes and just one tape of his motivational speeches. He rented an office that he shared with an attorney. Now, Les Brown is a highly sought-after resource in business and professional circles for Fortune 500 CEOs, small business owners, non-profit and community leaders from all sectors of society looking to expand opportunities. He energizes people to meet the challenges of the world around them. Hundreds of thousands are watching him on YouTube and tens of thousands interact with him regularly on Facebook. He has a keen way of turning what he touches into gold. Over 20 years ago, he won a Chicago-area Emmy® for his unsurpassed fundraising pledge drive for the Public Broadcasting System. Les Brown is an American motivational speaker. He was born with his twin brother, Wesley, in Liberty City, a low- income section of Miami, Florida. He was adopted by Mamie Brown, a 38-year-old single woman who worked as a cafeteria attendant and domestic assistant. Brown was declared “educable mentally retarded” in grade school, which damaged his self-esteem and confidence. When he first decided to get into public radio, he was repeatedly unsuccessful. It was only after the on-air failures of the previous afternoon DJ that he was hired full-time. Upon his termination from the radio station, he ran for election in the Ohio House of Representatives and won. After leaving the Ohio State Legislature, he shifted his career to television and became a host on PBS. From September to November 1993, he hosted a talk show, The Les Brown Show. Brown was on KFWB in California for a daily syndicated radio program from 2011 to 2012. In 1994, he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. The doctor informed him that the cancer had consumed 43% of his T1 vertebrae and had metastasized to seven parts of his body. Brown reports that when he heard "seven," he smiled, which befuddled the doctor. "Seven is my lucky number," he explained. Being a Bible-believing Christian, Brown took hope in the multiple affirmative references to "seven" in the Bible. Brown was given two-and-a-half years to live but blew past the dire prognosis. Do what is hard your life will be easy” – Les Brown. Bio Motivational speaker Les Brown was born Leslie Calvin Brown on February 17, 1945, in Miami, Florida. After giving birth to Brown and his twin brother, Wes, on the floor of an abandoned building, Brown’s biological mother gave her sons up for adoption when they were six weeks old to Mrs. Mamie Brown. When he was in fifth grade, Brown was forced back a grade by the school’s principal after being disruptive in class. Brown’s demotion subsequently led him to being placed in special education classes and labeled as mentally retarded. As an adolescent, Brown attended Booker T. Washington High School where he was influenced by a speech and drama instructor who encouraged him to pursue a career in radio broadcasting. After graduating from high school and briefly working for the Department of Sanitation, Brown worked as an errand boy for a Miami Beach radio station. At the station, Brown observed the disc jockeys with hopes of one day becoming an on-air personality. His break came when one of the disc jockeys became inebriated. Brown stood in for him and then was hired as a disc jockey. In the late 1960s, Brown moved to Columbus, Ohio, to work for WVKO Radio, where he became active in the community. Brown’s political activism in Columbus won him a seat with the 29th House District of the Ohio State Legislature. In his first year, Brown passed more legislature than any other freshman representative in Ohio State legislative history. In his third term, Brown served as chair of the Human Resources Committee. In 1981, Brown left the Ohio State House of Representatives to care for his ailing mother back in Florida. While in Miami, he continued to focus on social issues by developing a youth center training program. In 1986, Brown entered the public speaking arena on a full-time basis and formed Les Brown Enterprises, Inc. In 1989, Brown received the National Speakers Association’s highest award, the Council of Peers Award of Excellence (CPAE). In 1990, Brown recorded the Emmy Award-winning series of speeches entitled You Deserve, which became the lead fundraising program of its kind for pledges to PBS stations nationwide. In 1991, Toastmasters International selected Brown as one of the world’s best speakers and awarded him the Golden Gavel Award. Brown ranks amongst the nation’s leading authorities in understanding and stimulating human potential; he is a featured guest on many radio broadcasting stations and is often hired by professional corporations to teach and inspire new levels of achievement. “Do what is easy and your life will be hard; but do what is hard and your life will be easy.” — Les Brown Les Brown’s inspiring story began when he and his brother were born in an abandoned building and adopted by a hardworking domestic worker named Mamie Brown. Dubbed “the dumb twin” by his classmates, Les only began to change his vision of himself when a teacher told him, “Someone’s opinion of you doesn’t have to become your reality.” Since then, Les has been a radio personality, a politician and worked in the music business before becoming a heavily sought-after motivational speaker. In this episode, Brian Buffini interviews Les Brown and delves into his inspiring story. You’ll learn why it’s essential to have a “hungry” mindset, what are “OQPs” and why you should surround yourself with them, why goal achievement is located far beyond your comfort zone and how a system will help you attain lasting success. Les also offers a list of his past talks, located for free on YouTube, to watch and learn from. This episode is packed with information; you’ll want to listen to it several times to hear all of the inspirational nuggets Les Brown has to offer. Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “Judge a man or woman not by what they have accomplished but by what they had to overcome for their accomplishment.” — Booker T. Washington “You’re never too old to learn and you’re never too young to teach.” — Les Brown “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson “I’m here because of two women: one gave me life, the other gave me love.” — Les Brown “There are moments in life that can make you or break you.” — Les Brown “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” — Maya Angelou “Living from a place of integrity is what it takes to become an entrepreneur.” — Les Brown “You gotta be hongry.” — Les Brown “The people who are ‘hungry’ will do the things others won’t do so they can have tomorrow the things that others won’t have.” — Les Brown “Being average is not an option; you have to be extraordinary in order to be considered average.” — Les Brown “I was ‘hongry’ even when I was no longer hungry.” — Brian Buffini “You can’t read the label if you’re locked in the box.” — Les Brown “Part of being motivated is surrounding yourself with OQP—Only Quality People.” — Les Brown “Do what is easy and your life will be hard; but do what is hard and your life will be easy.” — Les Brown “Don’t focus on what you don’t have. You get in life what you are.” — Earl Nightingale “In order to do something you’ve never done, you’ve got to become someone you’ve never been.” — Les Brown “Today you either expand or you’re expendable.” — Les Brown “Ask for help, not because you’re weak but because you want to remain strong.” — Les Brown “Once you stop fighting for what you want, what you don’t want will automatically take over.” — Les Brown “Do what you’re called to do.” — Les Brown “We were not meant to work for a living, but to live our making and our making will make our living.” — Les Brown “Life is about experimenting and finding out ‘what is your sweet spot?’” — Les Brown “If you can control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his action. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do. If you make a man feel that he is inferior, you do not have to compel him to accept an inferior status, for he will seek it himself. Les Brown was declared "educably mentally retarded" while in grade school. Despite the self-esteem issues this created, Les Brown learned how to reach his full potential with the encouragement of Les Brown's mother and assistance by a helpful teacher in high school, a key point in many motivational speeches Les Brown gives now.
