Are your five pushing you to achieve, or are they content to stay where they are? It's a relatable challenge—being around people who might unknowingly slow us down like crabs in a pot pulling each other back.   In this episode, I'll cover the following topics with you: The importance of accountability for consistency and motivation How your environment can subtly shape your goals "Crabs in a pot" and why it matters for your growth Benefits of surrounding yourself with like-minded achievers   This episode reminds us that growth and accountability go hand in hand. First off, what is success? Success is doing something you set out to do on purpose and you are happy doing it.   If you look around you, you'll most likely notice that successful people become a certain type of person before becoming successful.   They do a specific thing that propels them to be successful… not 100 things all at once, not being particularly good at any one thing.  It would be ok to be a crafter and do different things, such as rings, earrings, bracelets, but it's all jewel, and maybe even a specific type of jewelry such as metals or beads, for example. They are goal-driven in a certain field or craft… such as a cattle rancher, a crops grower, a vineyard owner, a fashion designer, a home decluttering expert, you get the point.   But they focus on that one thing, in that one field… and then BECOME known for that.  Usually when someone becomes famously successful they've done a lot of work that most of us don't know about.   It's ok to pivot… it's almost always by trial and error that people find the one thing they're successful at.   Never give up trying… keep your eye on the prize of your success.  Relentless pursuit will get you there.   “Work harder on YOURSELF than you do on your job.” “Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” -        Jim Rohn -          “You don't get paid for the hour.  You get paid for the value you bring to the hour.”   “The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get.”  - Jim Rohn   IMPORTANT: If you are in an abusive relationship and you don't feel safe, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline! Do you want to become the best version of yourself? To live the life you want, you have to brave through discomfort and take intentional action. You can change the trajectory of your future just by becoming 1% better than yesterday. In this episode, I will dive into the lessons and takeaways from the book The Last Arrow. I will also discuss choosing to live fully, finding clarity, and what it takes to be an elite. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Live fully and intentionally. Change your past and future. Know how to become an elite. Become 1% better than yesterday. Live the life you want. Episode Highlights: [01:36] The 7 Categories of Setting Goals and Living Intentionally Are you where you want to be spiritually, physically, and according to your personal points of interest? How about in your key relationships, business, job, and finances? [03:40] Choosing to Live Fully You become a source of life for others when you choose to live fully into your God-given purpose and ultimate fulfilled life. Consequently, choosing to stay where you are could leave other people stranded. You can't be somebody's top five if you don't take action. [07:58] Changing the Future I often think about the future as months or years from now. But even the next 8 hours is the future. If you want to change your past, change what you do in the next 8 hours.  [09:22] Becoming an Elite Elites commit to taking action towards being the best version of themselves. Surround yourself with the right people, have the right conversations, and design the right environment. [11:14] Becoming 1% Better than Yesterday Change what you do over the next 8 hours. Do something that allows you to wake up tomorrow, knowing you did something to get 1% better. Then, make a habit of it. From there, you'll become elite and live the life you're seeking to live. Notable quotes from the Episode:  [03:55] “When you choose to live fully, then you become a source of life for others.” [06:24] “If you don't get clear on everything that could be, for your life, or you get clear but you don't take action, then you're leaving the people who you would be part of their five—you're leaving them stranded.” [08:48] "If you want to change your past, change what you do in the next 8 hours because come tomorrow, today will be your past. So if you want to change your past, change your future."  Resources Mentioned: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Arrow-Save-Nothing-Next/dp/1601429533 (The Last Arrow) by Erwin Raphael McManus https://www.businessinsider.com/jim-rohn-youre-the-average-of-the-five-people-you-spend-the-most-time-with-2012-7 (Jim Rohn: You're the Average of the Five People You Spend the Most Time With) Sign up to my https://thementee.com/ (email list)!

Are your habits based on your identity or the results you want to achieve? Our habits must be tied to the identity we want instead of results. What we perceive as discipline is what happens when a person's habits and goals align to their identity. Here at The Mentee Podcast, we all want to be consistent with our goals, but sometimes  life can lead us astray and we stumble as we try to achieve our dreams. In this episode, Wyatt Graves, Host of The Mentee Podcast, talks about his coaching session with Ron Podolski and how he learned to celebrate all kinds of wins, practice gratitude, and build identity-based habits. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: It takes a mindset shift to train high-quality leaders and elevate one's business. Always remember to celebrate not only big wins but also small ones. Place the order of what you want to happen and achieve with the universe.  A coach is helpful in reminding us to get back on track with our goals. Tie your habits to the identity you want to achieve for yourself.  [00:50] Coaching Call with Ron Podolski It's been a month since Wyatt last talked with Coach Ron Podolski. Last year, Wyatt clarified his goal of leading a team of leaders. He has always been on the front lines of his business. However, he later realized he needed to shift his mindset to elevate his leadership, scale, and lead highly talented people. [04:18] Celebrate Wins and Practicing Gratitude After reaching a milestone he's been dreaming of for years with his business, Wyatt went “business as usual”. It's important to celebrate not only big wins but also small ones — a win is a win. You have to place your order with the universe to receive, because placing the order means clarifying your vision and acknowledging your desire.  [09:56] Success Leaves Clues Wyatt remembered a Facebook post from a friend who realized that the people who consistently went to the gym with her were all successful. Discipline happens when people have aligned their actions and goals with their identity. Try to think about your identity and the habits that would propel you toward your future self and the identity you want. This thought is laying heavy on my heart today. I want to come to you as a pastor and friend who has genuine concerns for your future, not just as a leader, but even more than that, as a person, a father, a mother, a son daughter, an employee, a business owner etc…We are at a critical point in our social landscape as a community. We are all re-emerging from 2 years of disrupted and dictated social interactions. So now we have a fresh sense of freedom to re-engage socially with our world BUT we are also presented with an extraordinarily UNIQUE opportunity. We can RESET our social lives….we have a free pass to choose a-fresh not just WHAT we will do with our freedom to socialise, but WHOM we will do it with! This decision…this choice of WHO is what I feel to drill down on today.Dr Henry Cloud - Boundaries for LeadersIt's not enough to avoid toxic and negative connections; it's critical that you invest in building positive ones. Positive emotions have been shown to broaden people's range of thinking and responses, enabling them to become better problem solvers, more open to new inputs, and more efficient and productive. A positive emotional climate expands everyone's intellectual repertoire and abilities. This is not happy talk, but neuroscience.Jim Rohn - “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”We become, who we are with.Proverbs 13:20 MSG“Become wise by walking with the wise; hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces.”Do the people you spend time with, revive your spirit?Proverbs 25:25 TPT“Like a drink of cool water to a weary, thirsty soul, so hearing good news revives the spirit.”Are you hearing good reports from your closest relationships?Proverbs 15:30 TPT“Eyes that focus on what is beautiful bring joy to the heart, and hearing a good report refreshes and strengthens the inner being.”Q: How is your “People Picker?”We all choose individuals to be around us, and most of them are pretty good finds. But it's easy to also get a bit out of balance, and have a lot more “drain” than “gain” relationships…QUIZLet's do an individual HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP quiz….I will list the 7 kinds of relationships that John Townsend discusses in his book People Fuel, that from 1, are top fuelers to 7, are massive drainers….you write down after each kind of relationship, how many of these kinds of people you would say are in your world and/or how much time you spend with those kinds of people.Check out the rest of the notes here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sQ65o0_7Ywe8Q-1odZE4sVa4dI-SicTP/view?usp=sharing

For several years, he was the #1 most-read writer on Medium.com. Notes: The broaden and build theory — Dr. Barbara Fredeickson — shows that positive emotions are the starting point of learning, growth, and high performance “Competing against someone else puts you in the gap. Your happiness as a person is dependent on what you measure yourself against.” More specifically you measure your own gains, rather than worrying about other people. When we measure ourselves against that ideal, we're in "the GAP." However, when we measure ourselves against our previous selves, we're in "the GAIN." "This one simple concept is a masterclass on positive psychology, healthy relationships, mental well-being, and high-performance. Everything that psychologists know about how to create a high-functioning and successful person can be achieved using The GAP and the GAIN." Who Not How -- Life is about surrounding yourself with the right WHO's. Who are the WHO's in your life to help you achieve what you want? “Surround yourself with people who remind you more of your future than your past. —Dan Sullivan” Commitment creates freedom -- Once the decision is made, then you can focus on the work. I like thinking of it that way and in a way it frees your mind when the decision, the commitment has been made. “Your behavior doesn't come from your personality. Rather, your personality is shaped by your behavior. When you act a certain way, you then judge yourself based on your actions. Hence, you can quickly alter your identity simply by altering your behavior.” “The belief that you cannot change leads to a victim mentality. If you are determined by nature to be what you are, then there is nothing you can do about your lot in life. Conversely, the belief that you can change leads you to take responsibility for your life. You may have been born with certain constraints, but you can change those constraints, allowing yourself to improve and grow.” “Don't join an easy crowd; you won't grow. Go where the expectations and the demands to perform are high. —Jim Rohn” “You are never pre-qualified to live your dreams. You qualify yourself by doing the work. By committing—even overcommitting—to what you believe you should do.” “You shape the garden of your mind by planting specific things from your environment, such as the books you read, experiences you have, and people you surround yourself with.” “True learning is a permanent change in cognition and/or behavior. In other words, learning involves a permanent change in how you see and act in the world. The accumulation of information isn't learning. Lots of people have heads full of information they don't know what to do with. If you want to learn something quickly, you need to immerse yourself in that thing and immediately implement what you're learning.” “You need to deepen the quality and intimacy of your relationships with other people. Our culture is being shaped to isolate us more and more from each other. Addiction is becoming an epidemic. When you have deep and meaningful relationships, your chances of unhealthy addiction are far less. The following are four principles for overcoming harmful defaults in your environment.”

Jim Rohn: “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” Today's episode is all about how to uplevel and elevate your network with three strategies to a million dollar network. In fact, these three strategies are so simple, but easy and effective that if you can leverage them, there is no industry that this does not work for. And they can generate you well over a million dollars through your existing network or your brand new networks that you're going to be creating.   This is a topic we can sometimes overlook. Often this happens when you are stepping over dollars to pick up pennies. There is a famous quote from Jim Rohn “You're the average of the five people spend the most time with” which has meant a lot to me since I first read it. To me it shows the value of mentors and surrounding yourself with like minded individuals, people to look up to, people who are invested in helping you succeed rather than hold you back. In this weeks episode I cover how I think this quote relates to dentistry.   Do you agree with this quote? The Real Estate Way to Wealth and Freedom

Do you remember when you were a kid what you wanted to be when you grew up? For me, first I wanted to be a truck driver. Then it was a bull rider – I wore boots, jeans, and a cowboy hat to pre-school, kindergarten, and throughout elementary school. I held my own real-life rodeos with the help of my dog. Then it was an astronaut. I had a poster of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins from the 1969 Apollo 11 space flight and the moon landing. I also wanted to be a veterinarian, an anesthesiologist, and the President of the United States just to name a few more. Luckily, my parents, like so many others, encouraged me to do and be whatever I wanted. When we are young we are encouraged to explore, learn new things, and be creative. But eventually, that freedom fades as we grow older. Eventually, we're expected to bear the normal responsibilities of working a steady job, traditional retirement planning, raising a family, and so on. We quit encouraging people to explore and learn new things way too early in life. At 18 years old you're expected to know what you want to do for a career when just 2 years ago you couldn't even drive yourself to a job. Before we know it, we're slapped with the responsibilities of life, and all that room for being creative quickly disappears. “Adults are always asking kids what they want to be when they grow up because they are looking for ideas.” – Paula PoundstoneYou can live your life however you want. Anything you can imagine is possible. You must first imagine that. This is your vision. Your vision is the big picture. It's the framework for goals and actions. You vision outlines who you want to be, how you want to live your life, and what values you have. Your vision will be your reasons why you wake up every day and pursue your goals. Your vision is what you strive for. The more specific you can make your vision, the better. A vision to simply “be wealthy” or “be happy” isn't enough. Be specific. Use emotionally charged language about how you will feel. Most importantly, write it down. It's ok if you don't know exactly what your vision is just yet. Writing it down will help you turn your thoughts into words, and then turn those words into actions. Your vision will probably change over time too. Think big with your vision. Remember, people, overestimate what they can do in a year, and underestimate what they can do in a decade. Look at New Year's resolutions for example. People set lofty goals only to give up by the time February rolls around. A lot can change in 5 years, 10 years, and so on. 5 years doesn't seem like that long of a time, right? But think back 5 years ago to a point in your life. Look at how much has changed for you since then. I'm sure you've grown, learned and experienced new things, and are capable of more now. Your interests, hobbies, priorities, and responsibilities have probably changed some too. One thing is certain: whether you changed (for the better or worse) or not, those 5 years have passed. And the next 5 years will pass. “It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind that determines which way we will go.” – https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/jim_rohn_130022?src=t_sails (Jim Rohn)You owe it to not only yourself but to the other people in your life, to be the best version of you. That's all – just be the best person you can be. Anything less is wasting your potential, and well, there isn't anything more you can do. Living IntentionallyYour vision serves as a purpose for you to live intentionally. Living intentionally means you make conscious decisions to living your life how you want. As we all know, it can be easy to get caught up in everyday life, being reactive to the things that come our way. If life is a pinball machine, you can either be the pinball being bounced around, or you can be the paddles. Which do you want to be? If you don't know EXACTLY who you want to be and what you want to be doing in 5 years, you're...

In this episode, Ziz and Pam talk about the value of mentorship for today's youth. Formal or informal, mentorship is the future. As educations shifts away from the "sage on the stage" model, new pathways for experiential learning are emerging. They provide opportunities for child-directed, interest-based development. Instead of telling kids what to think, we need to teach them how to think and show them what it looks like to be creative, innovative, and collaborative. Modeling is an important part of mentorship. Helping kids understand that uncertainty is a reality prepares them for a future where their worthiness is not based on outcomes. Fulfillment comes from discovering your meaning and answering life's call. How to #mentorup? Volunteer, job shadow, interview people, take a part-time job. RESOURCES: Pam Roy Blog, What Now? The people we surround ourselves with are the biggest influence on our behavior, attitudes and results we get out of life. They affect your attitudes and behaviors. Eventually you start to think like they think and behave like they behave. It's important to be thoughtful about what you expose yourself to in regards to learning and who you spend time with. The good news is that you can change it.     Show Highlights: The people you spend the most time with will shape who you are. They determine what conversations dominate your attention. They affect your attitudes and behaviors. Eventually you start to think like they think and behave like they behave. Quote from motivational speaker Jim Rohn: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” There were three different types of groups at the retreat. One day walking down the hall I heard one man with a lot of tattoos wearing a blue tank top say to another man, “I just got out of jail two days ago.” The other man said, “Good for you for coming to a place like this and getting help.”  I even hear one woman say to another, “Let's get in line before breakfast. You want to be there first so you get enough to eat.” Let's call them group 1.  Another time a dark haired man with a smile on his face and I reach the door to the coffee room at the same time. He politely open the door for me and nods. I thank him and walk in for coffee. Let's call them group 2. From this experience I got really clear on how our energy shows up and influences others. There's nothing wrong with the group you choose to hang out with. It's simply a characteristic of humans on how we learn and how we relate to one another. But it's important to be thoughtful about what you expose yourself to in regards to learning and who you spend time with. The good news is that you can change it. Your Vision Do you remember when you were a kid what you wanted to be when you grew up? Eventually, we’re expected to bear the normal responsibilities of working a steady job, traditional retirement planning, raising a family, and so on.  We quit encouraging people to explore and learn new things way too early in life. At 18 years old you’re expected to know what you want to do for a career when just 2 years ago you couldn’t even drive yourself to a job. Before we know it, we’re slapped with the responsibilities of life, and all that room for being creative quickly disappears. “Adults are always asking kids what they want to be when they grow up because they are looking for ideas.” – Paula Poundstone You can live your life however you want. Anything you can imagine is possible. You must first imagine that. This is your vision. Your vision is the big picture. It’s the framework for goals and actions. You vision outlines who you want to be, how you want to live your life, and what values you have. Your vision will be your reasons why you wake up every day and pursue your goals. Your vision is what you strive for. The more specific you can make your vision, the better. A vision to simply “be wealthy” or “be happy” isn’t enough. Be specific. Use emotionally charged language about how you will feel. Most importantly, write it down. It’s ok if you don’t know exactly what your vision is just yet. Writing it down will help you turn your thoughts into words, and then turn those words into actions. Your vision will probably change over time too. Think big with your vision. Remember, people, overestimate what they can do in a year, and underestimate what they can do in a decade. Look at New Year’s resolutions for example. People set lofty goals only to give up by the time February rolls around. A lot can change in 5 years, 10 years, and so on. 5 years doesn’t seem like that long of a time, right? But think back 5 years ago to a point in your life. Look at how much has changed for you since then. I’m sure you’ve grown, learned and experienced new things, and are capable of more now. Your interests, hobbies, priorities, and responsibilities have probably changed some too. One thing is certain: whether you changed (for the better or worse) or not, those 5 years have passed. And the next 5 years will pass. “It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind that determines which way we will go.” – https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/jim_rohn_130022?src=t_sails (Jim Rohn) You owe it to not only yourself but to the other people in your life, to be the best version of you. That’s all – just be the best person you can be. Anything less is wasting your potential, and well, there isn’t anything more you can do. Living Intentionally Your vision serves as a purpose for you to live intentionally. Living intentionally means you make conscious decisions to living your life how you want. As we all know, it can be easy to get caught up in everyday life, being reactive to the things that come our way. If life is a pinball machine, you can either be the pinball...

012: Weekly Q&A: Toys Worth Flipping? How To Spot Deals Quickly? Flipping with Little Money To Spend? Estimated Hourly Income when Flipping?   The Flipping Ninja's Weekly Listener Q & A offers highly-focused, non-theoretical, no-nonsense Q&A. This week's Questions: What do you estimate your hourly income is both DURING the first month you started a serious effort on CL? What techniques do you use to spot deals quickly? Do you find that most sellers are available to have you pick up things that day? Could you go more in depth on talking down prices or haggling with Craigslist sellers? How can I get started with flipping if I don't have any money to spend? I've been thinking about flipping or buying toys and selling them on Craigslist, but this is something I don't know a lot about. Do you have any idea if toys on Craigslist can be picked up cheap enough to turn a profit, or if it's worth reselling them on Craigslist? What items should I focus on to make the most money when I'm just getting started? On this week's episode you'll also discover:  How to setup Craigslist Alerts so you're notified everytime a MONEY-MAKING DEAL/OPPORTUNITY gets posted (you can jump on it before anyone else). How much money can you make per hour flipping? $25? $170? $500? It depends on this one thing... The one thing that almost nobody does on Craigslist – that can make you thousands of dollars starting today (it takes 30 seconds to set up once you're logged in BAM – you're done). How to STOP spending all day long on Craigslist browsing for deals... and instead make deals COME TO YOU (while you're having dinner with your family, watching a movie, or relaxing). How to create "virtual salesmen” who constantly bring you deals automatically, 24/7. You get all of them first, then decide if you want to take it or not. Interested in selling and flipping toys on Craigslist? Before you start crushing it with used toys on eBay, Craigslist, or Amazon, keep this one thing in mind (covered in podcast) Quotes: "Work for wages, and you'll make a living. Work for PROFITS, and you'll make a fortune." - Jim Rohn "You can't hit a target you can't see, right? So you have to SEE your targets so you can improve on them." “You don't need any money to get started flipping. A lot of people use that as an excuse to not do it. You don't need money to make money in the flipping business. All you need is time, energy, and courage. Creativity.” “There are plenty of ways to make money flipping without actually spending money.” "If you're a flipping ninja, you have the Eye for the Deal™. What is the Eye for the Deal™? The Eye for the Deal™ is when you reach that point where you just have that eye; you see profit potentials immediately. When you go to the store, or when you're at a garage sale, or when you're browsing Craigslist – all you see is dollar signs." "You can see right away if you're gonna make money on something, and HOW MUCH you're gonna make on it. Right away, instantly, subconsciously – you don't even think about it. Just like how your heart beats on its own without you consciously doing it. Once you develop the Eye for the Deal™, that's what it becomes like." "Developing The Eye for the Deal™ takes experience, practice, knowledge, etc. But once you got it, it's literally like you've got this beacon – this superpower that works for you 24/7 – recognizing deals, profits, opportunity." “For toys, focus on eBay, but don't disregard Craigslist.” "Part of my philosophy is I wanna help you make as much money as possible while doing as little work. Call it lazy, call it smart, call it efficient, call it resourceful – whatever you want to call it – I don't really care." "The key is to make as much money as possible, in as little time as possible. Because you want TIME to do what you want. You want that freedom. That's what it's all about – freedom, isn't it?" "Part of helping you make as much money in as little time possible is pointing out things that you're doing NOW. Recognizing things that you're doing NOW, that take up time. Seeing if you can automate it somehow. Seeing if you can setup a way for you to keep getting the same result – without you having to DO THE THING." "The traditional method of your regular average flipper who buys things and resells them or someone on the Internet teaching this stuff, aka the "low level", "poor man's way" of doing it would be this: you constantly pull out your phone every hour and go on Craigslist and search "Yamaha Keyboards". See if someone posted one for sale. I mean you'd be checking it ALL THE TIME, you don't wanna miss those deals, right? So it's like every second of your life -- you're like 'I GOTTA SEE IF SOMEONE POSTED IT! I GOTTA SEE IF SOMEONE POSTED IT! I DON'T WANNA MISS OUT ON IT – LET ME SEARCH!' You could be sitting there at a movie with your girlfriend. And you're literally chained – you're anchored and chained to your phone, and you're constantly searching on Craigslist. Now suddenly... think about how that would impact your whole life. And that's just for Yamaha Keyboards! That doesn't sound ideal, and that's not what I teach. Efficiency and freedom is the name of the game when you're flipping things -- The Flipping Ninja way." “There could be a seller selling an item, and there could be 2 flippers contacting them. The seller will tell the first flipper, “No, I can't do today, I'm available next week.” But at the same time, he'll tell the second flipper, “Yeah, I could do today, how about 4pm?” What's the difference?  Why is it that he said “No not today” to the first guy, and “Yeah today works for me, I could swing it” to the second guy? “It's because there's a way of communicating with sellers. There's a way of speaking to them. Whether through text, whether through phone, whether through email. There's a way of taking to them that will get them to meet you today. It's what you say. The words you say. Your approach. So if you know what that is, if you have the information and tactics – literally word for word what to say to sellers to make absolute sure that YOU get that deal the SAME DAY (or as quickly as possible) – there is a way of speaking and communicating to them that will let you win the deal." “One thing to keep in mind is, these people selling these items; they're not people like you and I who are flipping things to make money on the side. These are just regular people who are looking to get rid of their items – for whatever reason. So it's not like they're looking to make specific profits or anything like that.” “Sometimes you'll come across an item that's a really good deal. So if it's a really good deal, it's gonna be gone soon. That's just the way it is. I mean if a deal is really good, it's not gonna last long. So if you're talking to someone on the phone about their item, just assume that if you don't set up a time right now to go and buy it from them and take it off their hands, someone else within a few minutes is gonna go and do it instead. So keep that in mind when you're out there looking for things to buy. Don't be a cheapskate where you're constantly trying to haggle on every little thing – especially if it's already a killer deal." A bias is a tendency, inclination, or prejudice toward or against something or someone. Welcome to the 110th episode of Giving Back Insights! Insights are our solo show to celebrate how our guests and their charities serve others, explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and connect. Today we’re talking about the bias towards abundance! Enjoy today’s episode and keep your comments and feedback coming. Key Takeaways: Bias is disproportionate weight in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. Confirmation bias is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms one's preexisting beliefs or hypotheses. People display this bias when they gather or remember information selectively, or when they interpret it in a biased way. The effect is stronger for emotionally charged issues and for deeply entrenched beliefs. A cognitive bias is a systematic pattern of deviation from norm or rationality in judgment.[1] Individuals create their own "subjective social reality" from their perception of the input. An individual's construction of social reality, not the objective input, may dictate their behaviour in the social world.[2] Thus, cognitive biases may sometimes lead to perceptual distortion, inaccurate judgment, illogical interpretation, or what is broadly called irrationality. Needless to say, I look for evidence that proves I’m on the right path about giving back and the cycle of abundance. Marc Freedman is the President and CEO of Encore.org, which pioneers innovative programs and sparked a growing movement in the United States and beyond to tap the talent and experience of people past midlife as a human resource for solving our most vexing social problems.  I’m reading his most recent book, “How to Live Forever” Besides its provocative title, his book got me thinking on a variety of topics. One was some research on the outcomes of Big Brother/Big Sister.  The impact over just a year is startling: a drop of 46% in drug use, absenteeism cut by 52%, and a reduction of 33% in violent behaviors.  That’s negative behaviors. On the plus side, academic measures were all up significantly over those who were not paired with a mentor. Maria Keller with Read Indeed: AZ projects its incarcerated population by 4th grade reading Marc raised an interesting point about these results that also resonated with me: 90% of mentors who came to hang out, to have fun, to listen, were still meeting 9 months later.  Only 30% of mentors who came to “transform lives” were still in the program. The importance of being present, consistently and persistently, are so clear. Josh Coombes, DoSomethingForNothing Orange Sky: the most measure of our impact is the number of conversations we facilitate John Evoy, Men’s Sheds: the most important tool in the shed is the tea kettle Mentoring also carried unexpected upside for the mentors: a sense of worth, lower use of pain meds, greater independence.   Clearly giving is a two-way street. Giving as a “Centerpiece” of their lives (vs “Legacy”) Which led me somehow to a conversation with Pastor Steve Stone on “anonymity”, or giving anonymously, and the concept of “highest love” So, yeah, I seek the evidence of the cycle of abundance.  The concept of receiving more than I give is uplifting, it’s aspirational as well as inspirational.  The people we surround ourselves with are the biggest influence on our behavior, attitudes, and results. I choose to create my world of abundance and fill it with all the evidence I need. In the words of motivational speaker Jim Rohn: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” Remember: Always err on the side of love & kindness. “Do what is easy and your life will be hard; but do what is hard and your life will be easy.” — Les Brown Les Brown’s inspiring story began when he and his brother were born in an abandoned building and adopted by a hardworking domestic worker named Mamie Brown. Dubbed “the dumb twin” by his classmates, Les only began to change his vision of himself when a teacher told him, “Someone’s opinion of you doesn’t have to become your reality.” Since then, Les has been a radio personality, a politician and worked in the music business before becoming a heavily sought-after motivational speaker. In this episode, Brian Buffini interviews Les Brown and delves into his inspiring story. You’ll learn why it’s essential to have a “hungry” mindset, what are “OQPs” and why you should surround yourself with them, why goal achievement is located far beyond your comfort zone and how a system will help you attain lasting success. Les also offers a list of his past talks, located for free on YouTube, to watch and learn from. This episode is packed with information; you’ll want to listen to it several times to hear all of the inspirational nuggets Les Brown has to offer.   Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “Judge a man or woman not by what they have accomplished but by what they had to overcome for their accomplishment.” — Booker T. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do. If you make a man feel that he is inferior, you do not have to compel him to accept an inferior status, for he will seek it himself. If you make a man think that he is justly an outcast, you do not have to order him to the back door. Own It! For Entrepreneurs. Talking Digital Marketing, Small Business, Being Digital Nomads and Success Thinking

Nicola and Judith debate this from Jim Rohn: “You don’t get paid for the hour, you get paid for the value you bring to the hour.” In the Show… Nicola’s enjoyed a busy social week with Greek Easter a week later than in the UK and then a second Christmas! The local turkey is conspicuous by his absence though. Judith’s caught up with the calls she missed during last week’s power cut. She talks about her learning from working with her low-carb clients, and working out what she does want in a home next time she puts down roots. What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Nicola’s 30 Day Challenge is going swimmingly, she’s loving it, the clients are getting great results and giving her wonderful feedback and testimonials which she’s finding very affirming. She’s reminded of the power of a simple system. Judith’s done two Entrepreneur of the Day calls this week including one referral from Nicola, Jimmy the pastor from Seattle, Washington. Both will become clients of one sort of another in due course and meanwhile they’ve left glowing 5-star reviews on her Facebook Page. FOCUS of the Week If you don’t get paid for the hour but what you bring to it, how do you demonstrate the value of your time/talent, and how do you price and package your expertise so that it doesn’t come down to being devalued by an hourly rate? Nicola and Judith debate what they will and won’t pay for by the hour and at what price and then open up the debate to the wider issues, concluding that we are all weirdos when it comes to money. Words of the Week Nicola picks Live and Judith goes for Reviews. Project Updates Judith’s up to 124 books sold, all 52 blogfest posts are now published and she’s working her way through the newsletter spotlight features and the podcast readings and enjoying both a lot more this week. Nicola’s still working on getting her Facebook Ads account reinstated whilst at the same time feeling liberated from over-dependence on just the one social platform. Who or What’s Impressed? Nicola is impressed by both Minesh Bhindi and James Schramko and their respective passionate truthful use of Facebook Lives, giving rise to her choice of word of the week. And Judith rants about the gender pay gap and; like Sarah Montague, she is “incandescent with rage”. She introduces Nicola to the Women’s Equality Party via Sandi Toksvig’s article in The Guardian about the Adam Smith lecture she’d just given which takes the discussion still further into women’s unpaid labour. Brian is the founder of Brian K. Wright International whose mission is to motivate and inspire others to discover their unique talents and follow their dreams in life. With extensive experience teaching and training in academics and corporate environments, he understands that many people live far beneath their potential, primarily because they don’t believe they deserve success. Through his experience and research, Brian has learnt and practiced the principles he teaches in his book Student Leadership Strategies: 21 Easy Ways to Become a Center of Influence in Your Group. Brian is also the host of the Internet Radio Talk Show Success Profile Radio on the Rock Star Radio Network. Brian holds a Degree in Communication Studies and holds a Master’s Degree in Adult Education from the University of Nebraska in London. He discovered a passion for speaking and influencing audiences by speaking competitively in High School and College and by being heavily involved on campus while in school.   Questions Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey Can you give an overview of some of the topics in your book? How do you feel about customer service as a customer yourself? What are two (2) everyday solutions that you believe that can help improve customer experience on a global level? How do you stay motivated everyday? What is the one online resource, website, tool or app you absolutely cannot live without in your business? In helping to write books, do you help clients from conceptuality throughout the writing process? What are some of the books that have had the biggest impact on you? What is one thing in your life right now that you are really excited about – something that you are working on to develop yourself or your people? Where can our listeners find you? What is one quote or saying that you live by or that inspires you in times of adversity?   Highlights Brian stated that he got his Degree in Adult Education at the University of Nebraska and taught at a Business College for almost 5 years where he taught Public Speaking, English Composition, and Business Mathematics (a really fun combination of classes). He expressed when someone is taking a class that is required – you have to make it fun. He further expressed that he taught at this college and even though it was a private college they ran it as a business. He also shared that most of the students that attended the school were non-traditional aged students. He stated that he wrote resumes to help people find jobs which was fun. Fast forward a few years later, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona and is now hosting a personal development radio show entitled “Success Profiles Radio” where he interviews world class achievers and learns how they succeeded and what they overcame and what lessons we can learned from that. A few of the persons he has interviewed includes Darren Hardy, Jack Canfield, Dr. John Demartini from “The Secret”, Laura Longmire, Sharon Lechter and James Malinchak – ABC Secret Millionaire. Brian stated that “Student Leadership Strategies: 21 Easy Ways to Become a Center of Influence in Your Group” is his first book and has been out for a little while. He stated that when writing the book, he wanted it to appeal to young people. Brian says that he thinks leadership is absent in a lot of arenas and the types of people that are in leadership positions maybe can do a better job or they are very self serving and that is not leadership and he wanted to write a book about that. At the beginning, he started to ask himself what makes a great leader?  And his goal was to come up with 21 answers to the question. He ended up with 30 and as he started writing, he realized that some of the topics were similar and those 30 topics turned into 21, so he was thankful that he still made his goal. The number one thing that he wrote about was that excellent leaders have a vision for the future. Brian stated when you think of Gene Roddenberry, creator of the Star Trek series, he just created this whole entire vision for what he thought the future should be like, an opportunity for people to explore space, somewhat Utopian! Brian even gave mention to the Wright Brothers who created the first airplane and Elon Musk as a modern day example who created PayPal and changed the platform and functions of eCommerce completely and even created Tesla and SpaceX. When you can have people buy into your vision, you’re going to be much more successful because no great leader can accomplish anything by themselves. Just like politicians, they have to sell their vision of what they want to do in order to get elected and get enough people to believe in that vision and that’s an amazing accomplishment, which leads to another thing that is important to being a successful leader and that is the idea of networking. And going back to the political example, you have to have a huge rolodex of people you can count on in order to accomplish anything. The key is not just getting them to do what you want to do but getting them to believe that what you want them to do is something that they also want to do. He also stated that excellent leaders make people feel welcome in their presence. If you’re a leader and you don’t feel comfortable following someone or you don’t feel comfortable with way that the leader is acting, you are not going to stick around for long so helping people feel comfortable in your presence means creating a culture and that is something you help people buy into. Brian shared most people like certain companies better based on the Culture they have created. In his examples he shared if you have a company that has theme days, a vending machine or foosball table in the break room – these small components help to set your company culture apart. Creating an environment of fun and that is welcoming where people want to continue coming and that’s what excellence leaders do. Brian shared as a customer he has had some good and bad experiences. He stated that what really gets to him is when people don’t listen which is one of his biggest pet peeves. A question is being asked and they are not answering the question being asked or they are answering the question they feel like answering. This mostly is because they have a script, they don’t really know, so they just fall back to a script that they are comfortable with. A customer may request to speak with a supervisor and sometimes people are happy to pass the call over and other people may get a little upset because they want to help but they are not being helpful, people want to speak with someone that can answer a specific question. He shares that what irritates him the most is when he would have to be calling over and over for an on-going issue and no one bothered to take notes about the first call. He mentioned a situation that happened and he had spent 45 minutes on the call with a representative, when he called back a few months later for a follow up on the issue that he spoke about before, he asked about the company fee’s for what they were doing for him and the answer he got from the first representative was great but then when he called back the second time and asked the same question, that representative stated that there are no notes about that, he was not happy that he had spoken about that issue for 30 minutes out of the 45 minutes conversation that he had with the representative. He felt annoyed the representative didn’t think to make notes. Brian also mentioned that if you say that you will follow up with a phone call or an email about a resolution, do what you can to make that happen and follow up. Making proper notes and listening are absolutely critical in customer service. Brian recommend that business owners should spend a day in the trenches with their team so that they can see and hear exactly what is going happening on a daily basis. You get to meet the people on your team; you get to learn what they are going through every single day. Let them train you as to what they are doing and why they are doing it and if you sit with enough people in one day where you take some calls, you will get a much better sense of what’s going on with your team and then you can make training recommendations. That will be outstanding because you be able to feel and experience what your team is feeling and experience or even better you could be a mystery shopper, call your company, call your customer service departments and see how they treat you, see how they handle things. Mystery shop your company to see the kind of experience you are receiving to see if it is aligned with your mission and use it as a training opportunity for your company to do better. Brian shared if your company is interested in doing better and performing at a world-class level – you will engage and do some mystery shopping on your business and then move into some well-needed training. Brian stated that staying motivated has to do with hanging around persons who have similar goals and missions. He mentioned a quote by Jim Rohn “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” If you are not experiencing financial success, look at the 5 people you are hanging around, chances are they aren’t either. If you’re 30 pounds overweight and you wish you have a better body, look at the 5 people you are hanging around, they are probably eating oreos on the couch after work too. If you want to lose weight…..find 5 people who look great, feel great, have a handle on they’re eating pattern and ask them what they are doing, ask them for advise even get a personal trainer if you need to. People who want to help you become a better sales person, people who want to help you with online marketing, so if you want to learn those things, know who you can tap into and get some help with. Brian also mentioned that he enjoys walking and running out in nature but in Arizona it is too hot so he is a member at a gym. He says he is able to enjoy his own thoughts when he walks and runs. He further believes that if you take care of yourself and who you are; you will have much to give to others very much like when you travel and the Flight Attendant states in her safety briefing place the mask on yourself first and then help the passenger next to you – you must be able to help yourself first before you can help others. Brian shared that the one app that he frequently uses and cannot live without in his business is Facebook. He stated that the guests that he gets for his Podcast show is mostly through Facebook and people that he admires and he also receives guest referrals. He stated that he also helps people write their books, so there is a lot of dialogue through Facebook as well. Brian said that he hasn’t done any ads via Facebook as yet; he has been talking with persons and will be starting that soon. Brian says he believes everyone has a book inside him or her; he helps them find their story within and helps them connect and find a way to connect with the world. Brian stated that he does help with the conceptuality of writing books, as he believes that everyone has a book inside them somewhere, somehow. He talks with them about their topic and what makes their topic unique. So if they want to write a book on customer service as an example, there are many books about that, it’s a very common topic. So he would ask, what spin would they place on that topic that would make their book interesting to read and would not be like the other books out there? And that would be an exploration of their background and what they’ve gone through. He coaches them on what topics that can be talked about in the book, create on outline together and the life stories that they would share because people relate to stories kind of how Jesus taught through his parables. He also stated that he helps with the self-publishing aspects as well, he has resources for format and layout of the book, designing the book cover and also printing of the book. Brian shares the books that he has read that has had the greatest impact on him are first - “The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be” by Jack Canfield, Brian said he read it several times within a year (2005), it has so many exercises and suggestions for things you can do. He also mentioned that Jack Canfield was interviewed on his show in 2015. Brian also mentioned that he is now reading “The 10X Rule: The Only Difference Between Success and Failure” by Grant Cardone.” The idea of setting massive goals for yourself and taking action on it has really helped him focus on thinking really big. Brian shared the first personal development book that he read was “The Magic of Thinking Big” by David Schwartz which really had an impact on him as well. He shared that the book was written in the 50’s. When we asked Brian what’s the one thing that he is excited about and working on in his life to develop himself or his people right now, he happily shared that he is currently working on a book called “Conversations with High Achievers.” He has some of the interviews transcribed and he is doing some editing as well as he has some extra writing to do and hoping to release the eBook version before December 2016. Just the idea that the book could be a huge springboard for more speaking opportunities and for an opportunity to do a live event someday and having some of these great speakers come to speak at his event is exciting and also providing opportunity for people to learn and develop themselves. He says as he re-visits all of these great interviews that he has been reviewing – he has learned so much and it has been a huge blessing for him. Brian shares listening to interviews with successful people is one major thing people can do to develop themselves. Brian says listeners can find him on Facebook - www.facebook.com/Success-Profiles-Radio-166132613536941/ Twitter - www.twitter.com/MrBriankwright Radio Show Page - toginet.com/shows/successprofilesradio Personal Website - www.briankwright.com Email - brian@briankwright.com   We asked Brian for one quote or saying that during times of adversity or challenge helps him to re-focus and re-engage - Brian said he had a moment earlier this week where he was feeling overwhelmed by things and he recalls a verse from the Bible Isaiah 43:19, as he frequently reads the Bible – “Behold, I will do anything for you.” He stated that it is a promise that is given and means that you are not going to stay where you are forever, something new is on the horizon for you, something wonderful, something great, something fantastic that will change your life.   Links “Student Leadership Strategies: 21 Easy Ways to Become a Center of Influence in Your Group” by Brian K.
