A Super Duper show heading into Super Bowl weekend. The Moj join us from Radio Row in Phoenix to break down the game and set scene from Phoenix prior to Super Bowl 57. Rick Dhaliwal longs for the old 1040 radio days and goes on a rant about the state of sports-talk radio in Canada. Vanni Sartini previews the fast-approaching Whitecaps season. And Matt and Blake bask in the glow of a terrific Canucks-Islanders game that was teeming with storylines: Elias Pettersson taking over on both ends of the ice, a resurgent Brock Boeser, J.T. Miller contributing in the offensive and defensive zones, Bo Horvat scores and hears his name chanted but his counterpart -- Beauvillier -- gets the last laugh. And, of yeah, Andrei Kuzmenko is still in the doghouse.Presented by Audi Downtown Vancouver, Land Rover Vancouver & Jaguar Vancouver.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with Brent Johnson who played in the Canadian Football League for the B.C. Lions from 2001 to 2011. Johnson attended Ohio State University where he played for the Buckeyes and was named to the All Big 10 Team in 2000. Johnson played as a defensive end for the B.C. Lions during his career in the CFL. He was a two-time CFL All-Star and won the Grey Cup championship twice during his career, retiring after winning his second Grey Cup in 2011. ‘It was intentional to leave when I left. It was my decision. It was mine and I wanted it that way. And I was ready to move on. I was never going to get an ending like we had in 2011. I would never get the rollercoaster ride that was that season. And then march that into playoffs. Into a Grey Cup in Vancouver for the only team I've played for, to go win it that year and to go out a champion under the lights where you called home for the last 11 years,' said Johnson. Throughout his career, Johnson was recognized for his outstanding performance, setting numerous records and receiving several accolades, including the Dick Suderman Trophy, awarded to the top Canadian defensive player in the CFL. Marjanovich asked if Johnson had a tough time transitioning from a being an athlete to the business world. ‘I don't think it's smooth for any athlete, just because the way that you measure yourself as an athlete, and I think the feedback loop of the signs that you're doing well, or how you are progressing are in the right place. It's much bigger in the working world or the corporate world outside of the athletics world.' On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with former NHL Referee Lonnie Cameron. Born in Victoria, B.C., Cameron grew up in Colwood. The former goaltender began officiating at the age of 12 and played hockey until the age of 20. His last two seasons as a player were with the Estevan Bruins of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Cameron was hired by the Western Hockey League (WHL) at age of 23, a league where he would end up spending a total of 9 seasons, where he was selected to work 2 Memorial Cup championships. He skated in his first NHL Regular Season Game on October 5th, 1996 close to home in Vancouver, BC at the General Motors Place when the Calgary Flames were in town to play the Canucks. His last game was in Vancouver against San Jose, April 3, 2019. Cameron was instrumental in the implementation of video review technology to assist referees in making difficult calls and was known for his ability to control the game and maintain a high level of discipline among the players. ‘You either can either conform or you don't. If I have to hit my whistle, you aren't going to like the results here. From the standpoint of the coaching staff Pat Quinn, he being GM here, (Vancouver) those first years, he was really tough and intimidating. He just had a way about him'. Marjanovich asked Cameron about the travel required to be an NHL linesman. ‘It's not quite a full two game, two-day average, but you're 150 nights (in hotels) and about 20,000 miles, in the air to pull that off. It's hard on the body'. He was also respected for his communication skills, which he used to explain his calls to players and coaches in a calm and clear manner. His approach to officiating was always focused on the game and the players, rather than on himself or his own ego. Cameron was assigned to work the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway and officiated in the NHL for 23 seasons. On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with Josh Gorges who played for his hometown Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2000 to 2004. The Rockets, with Gorges as team captain won the Memorial Cup in 2004 when Kelowna hosted the event. ‘I kept thinking to myself, what a way to go out, what a way to finish my junior career, to be able to win a Memorial Cup in my home city for my hometown team as the captain, and then go on to hopefully play pro hockey after that,' says Gorges. ‘So, it was a pretty remarkable time. One of the biggest highlights of my career. Something that I'll never forget. It was amazing.' After going undrafted in 2002, Gorges signed as a free agent with the San Jose Sharks. He is best known for his time with the Montreal Canadiens, where he played from 2007 to 2014. Gorges tells Marjanovich that he refused a trade from the Montreal Canadiens to the Toronto Maple Leafs. ‘When my agent called me and told me that I thought he was joking the first time. I said, they're not going to trade me to Toronto. That's one of our biggest rivals, that they don't make trades with each other. But then when I found out it was real, I just kept thinking, how could I go be the same player that I've been from Montreal, a heart and soul type guy? How could I do that for a team that I've hated for seven plus years? It was Toronto and Boston. You just couldn't imagine yourself playing for those teams after being in Montreal that long.' In addition to the Sharks and Canadiens, Gorges also played for the Buffalo Sabres, where he served as an alternate captain during his time there. He retired from professional hockey in 2019. On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with Ryan Johansen, center for the Nashville Predators of the (NHL). Born in Port Moody, Johansen's hockey career began when he played for the Penticton Vees in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) during the 2008-2009 season. He quickly made a name for himself as a standout player and was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Johansen made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets during the 2011-2012 season and quickly became a key player for the team. During the 2013-2014 season, Johansen had a breakout year, scoring 33 goals and recording 30 assists for a total of 63 points. He was named an NHL All-Star for the first time in his career that same season. Marjanovich asked Johansen what was the toughest thing about being a rookie in the national hockey league? ‘For me, it was the consistency. I'd go out one game and I'd make a couple big time plays and score a goal or make a nice assist, and then I wouldn't do anything for four games,' says Johansen. In January 2016, Johansen was traded to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Seth Jones. He has helped lead the team to multiple playoff appearances, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017 after sweeping the defending Stanley Cup champ Chicago Blackhawks in the first round. ‘We went into that series just like we're coming for their heads, we weren't losing no matter what,' says Johansen. ‘The motivation for me was just through the roof. We just steamrolled. We just kept going and going, but nothing distracted us. We were just a team on a mission, and man, it was so much fun'. Off the ice, Johansen has been involved with numerous organizations over the years, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Our good friend, the Moj, joined Matt and Blake from Los Angelas. Talked about some people he has run into on radio row. Talked about the difference in not having a network behind him. Says it is different but at the end of the day when you get down to business, it’s all the same. Talked about the lead-up to Sunday and how busy it gets. Talked about the big game and who has the edge. Rams have the edge in every category, other than QB. If the Bengals are going to win the game they need a turnover from Stafford. Talked about Joe Burrow. Says he does not get rattled, even after getting sacked 9 times in a game. Talked about the Lions going all Canadian at QB. Moj is glad they fell short in other areas. Talked about the one year since 1040 had the plug pulled. Says the frustrating part is that the station was never stronger. Darren Dreger, NHL insider and host of the Ray and Dregs Podcast joined Matt and Blake in his regular spot. Started off with the breaking news of Marty St. Louis being named the interim head coach for the Habs. Knew something was happening after the game last night. The only reason he can defend it is because it is short term and he has an intellect for the game. He has 2 months to prove he is an NHL coach. Maybe he isn’t quite ready but good enough that he was some consideration. Talked about some of the other names if Marty doesn’t pan out. Dregs noted a hall of famer that said it was a no-brainer. Talked about Alex Burrows. They had internal options and none of them were considered options for short lived opportunity. Dregs not ready to be critical of this without seeing it play out. This is a fantastic story and why not take a flyer on it. Talked about the millions being paid to multiple coaches being paid, not to coach. Talked about the Flames. Talked about Toffoli and if he might be a fit there. Talked about ARI strategy. Shouldn’t be surprised that they are a contract parking spot. Basically everyone is for sale. Talked about ARI moving to a 5k seating arena. Dregs says he has tuned out all this ARI talk. Says that owners are surprised that we don’t keep talking about it. Says everyone is tired of hearing the same old story.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
