On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with Ryan Johansen, center for the Nashville Predators of the (NHL). Born in Port Moody, Johansen's hockey career began when he played for the Penticton Vees in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) during the 2008-2009 season. He quickly made a name for himself as a standout player and was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Johansen made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets during the 2011-2012 season and quickly became a key player for the team. During the 2013-2014 season, Johansen had a breakout year, scoring 33 goals and recording 30 assists for a total of 63 points. He was named an NHL All-Star for the first time in his career that same season. Marjanovich asked Johansen what was the toughest thing about being a rookie in the national hockey league? ‘For me, it was the consistency. I'd go out one game and I'd make a couple big time plays and score a goal or make a nice assist, and then I wouldn't do anything for four games,' says Johansen. In January 2016, Johansen was traded to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Seth Jones. He has helped lead the team to multiple playoff appearances, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017 after sweeping the defending Stanley Cup champ Chicago Blackhawks in the first round. ‘We went into that series just like we're coming for their heads, we weren't losing no matter what,' says Johansen. ‘The motivation for me was just through the roof. We just steamrolled. We just kept going and going, but nothing distracted us. We were just a team on a mission, and man, it was so much fun'. Off the ice, Johansen has been involved with numerous organizations over the years, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation. On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with Troy Stecher, the Richmond, British Columbia, native. The defenseman played for the Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes. In a recent trade, the Calgary Flames acquired Stecher from Arizona. Stecher played junior hockey for the Penticton Vees in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and was named the league's top defenseman in the 2012-2013 season. He then attended the University of North Dakota, where he played for the school's hockey team for three seasons and helped them win a National Championship in 2016. ‘I was the only non-drafted player in my freshman class, so I knew going into play I was going to have to outperform players that were, in a way ranked higher than I was at a different level during the same times of our career. So, if I knew I could outperform them, then I would be on the right path. I just kept that mentality and it worked out', says Stecher. In April 2016, Stecher signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks and made his NHL debut in October of the same year. He played three seasons with the Canucks, during which he established himself as a reliable defenseman with good puck-moving abilities. Stecher talked about being injured and missing playing time. ‘I've embraced all the challenges that have come with it and there's a saying that we talked about a couple of us guys, every once in a while, we'll be like, there's no good with no bad. You can never really enjoy the good times if you don't have any bad times. I think everything does happen for a reason, as cliche as that sounds'. Off the ice, Stecher is known for his involvement in charity work. He is also an advocate for mental health awareness and has spoken openly about his own struggles with anxiety. It was fun to talk about a historic Masters that was held 7 months late in front of almost no patrons. Dustin Johnson set a bunch of records as he lead wire to wire and shot a record -20 268 as he was able to win and put on the green jacket for the first time. It was a really fun breakdown as we dove into so many of the story lines that emerged over the four days. We talked at length about junior hockey and the Okanagan cup that just wrapped up this weekend with the Penticton Vees taking the title over the Vernon Vipers. Brady Leavold is joined by WHL alumni Michael Hengen. Hengen, like Leavold, grew up in British Columbia's Lower Mainland. Hengen and Leavold were arch rivals throughout minor hockey. Brady actually hated no one more than Hengen. Hengen played his minor hockey in Burnaby in one of Canada's most successful and historic mionor hockey programs, Burnaby Winter Club. BWC is a privaate club that draws in the cream of the crop from the lower main land and were always the top team year in and year out. Leavold reveals how he was scared of Hengen during the U-16 tryouts in 2002, leading him to quit after the first ice session. The following year Leavold decided nothing would stop him from making the U-17 team. Both Leavold and Hengen made Team Fraser Valley and BC's top 40 following the BC Cup. After being teammates for the first time they instantly became friends and found themselves playing together in the WHL for the Swift Current Broncos. Hengen was there when Leavold packed up and quit at 18 years old, a mistake that still haunts Leavold till this day. Listen in as they reminisce on there time playing together in Swift Current and what Hengen did after hockey including helping the Penticton Vees to a national championship when they won the RBC Cup in 2012 with Hengen behind the bench as an assistant coach. Travis Hamonic wants a trade to Western Canada, Patrick Marleau wants one to a contender and we can't decide if Willie is a good coach or not. Ryan, Geeta and Dave are here this week to talk about what's going on in the NHL right now. P Mac skype's in, despite crippling illness to chime in on Travis Hamonic and if he could wind up on the Canucks. They also talk about Patrick Kane's bounce back year following his awful summer and how it could mean bad press for the NHL, similar to Tom Brady and the NFL. They look at the revamped NHL All-Star Game, whether Willie D should stay on as the Vancouver Canucks head Coach or if they should replace him if they plan to make the playoffs. Finally, the gang talks about Major Junior hockey in Canada, British Columbia and the influence the Penticton Vees have on the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Really fun podcast this week, Enjoy!
