Now that the NHL draft and the first wave of free agency are over, the Habsworld podcast crew is back to talk about these recent events. Host Norm Szcyrek was joined by cohosts Paul MacLeod, Sean Cayouette, and Jonathan Rebelo to talk about our beloved Montreal Canadiens, several NHL topics, and share a lot of laughs. This podcast was recorded on the evening of June 19, 2024. We have a full roster of topics, including: - Introductions & Habs trivia - Discussing & celebrating Montreal's first round picks Ivan Demidov and Michael Hage - Veterans Nick Suzuki and Brendan Gallagher helping out at the Habs development camp - How long can we expect Demidov and Hage to take before turning pro? - Saku Koivu's son was drafted by Montreal in the 3rd round. Does he have a legitimate chance to play for the Canadiens, or was this more of a PR move? - Habs sign free agent Alex Barre-Boulet. Did you want to see Montreal make a bigger splash this year, or wait until 1-3 years away? - Juraj Slafkovsky's contract extension signed July 1st to start the 2025-26 season. Do you think the term and price were too high, too low or just right? - The Jonathan Kovacevic trade was discussed. What other players might Montreal trade away next? - Rumours involving a Rutger McGroarty trade - Thoughts about Alex Burrows promotion to the organization's development team, and who could replace him behind the bench as an assistant coach. Possible replacements for the Laval head coaching position - Former Habs coach Claude Julien was hired as an assistant coach in St. Louis. Former Hab Steve Ott was promoted to associate coach for the Blues. Ott did play for Julien during the end of the 2016-17 season. Do you think Ott put in a good word for Claude to help him get that job? - Habs Development camp underway this week. A few prospects there were discussed - Shea Weber will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. MLB has a tradition of a player entering their Hall of Fame to choose a baseball cap that represents the team they identify with. If hockey had that tradition, would Weber choose to wear a Nashville or a Montreal jersey? - Winners and losers of the NHL free agency were discussed - RIP ex Hab Sergei Berezin, who scored the team's 10000th goal. Jonathan talked about watching the goal at a live game.

We recap their big win against Detroit, doing the Griddy, the Super Bowl, and apparently, Phil Kessel could be a Canuck? Phil the Thrill is in town to try out for the Canucks and wouldn't that be something crazy to see? Mikheyev has been the topic on Canucks Twitter and is his eventual departure on the horizon? Lots of questions needed answers on this show. With the rise of Dakota Joshua, Ted discusses moving him up the lineup to see if he can peak on his potential. He tells a story about Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows and how for a time they were THE 3rd line in the NHL until Alain broke them up and well... the rest was history. Top 5 this week is Top 5 goats. The hosts talked about the consistently terrible special teams, and how much focus they should take up for Martin St. Louis, Alex Burrows, and the rest of the coaching staff, the over-reliance of the drop-pass for powerplay entries by Nick Suzuki and company, and what strategies we'd like to see them try on the powerplay (0:00). They also talked about some positives, like how good Alex Newhook has looked through three games (33:30), the appearance of the Brendan Gallagher we remember (39:30), and Michael Pezzetta leaving it all on the ice (44:45), then took questions from the viewers (47:40). Our good friend, the Moj, joined Matt and Blake from Los Angelas. Talked about some people he has run into on radio row. Talked about the difference in not having a network behind him. Says it is different but at the end of the day when you get down to business, it’s all the same. Talked about the lead-up to Sunday and how busy it gets. Talked about the big game and who has the edge. Rams have the edge in every category, other than QB. If the Bengals are going to win the game they need a turnover from Stafford. Talked about Joe Burrow. Says he does not get rattled, even after getting sacked 9 times in a game. Talked about the Lions going all Canadian at QB. Moj is glad they fell short in other areas. Talked about the one year since 1040 had the plug pulled. Says the frustrating part is that the station was never stronger. Darren Dreger, NHL insider and host of the Ray and Dregs Podcast joined Matt and Blake in his regular spot. Started off with the breaking news of Marty St. Louis being named the interim head coach for the Habs. Knew something was happening after the game last night. The only reason he can defend it is because it is short term and he has an intellect for the game. He has 2 months to prove he is an NHL coach. Maybe he isn’t quite ready but good enough that he was some consideration. Talked about some of the other names if Marty doesn’t pan out. Dregs noted a hall of famer that said it was a no-brainer. Talked about Alex Burrows. They had internal options and none of them were considered options for short lived opportunity. Dregs not ready to be critical of this without seeing it play out. This is a fantastic story and why not take a flyer on it. Talked about the millions being paid to multiple coaches being paid, not to coach. Talked about the Flames. Talked about Toffoli and if he might be a fit there. Talked about ARI strategy. Shouldn’t be surprised that they are a contract parking spot. Basically everyone is for sale. Talked about ARI moving to a 5k seating arena. Dregs says he has tuned out all this ARI talk. Says that owners are surprised that we don’t keep talking about it. Says everyone is tired of hearing the same old story.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
