In today's episode I'm speaking with Farwiza Farhan, an amazing forest conservationist working to protect and restore the Leuser ecosystem on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia – the last place on Earth where tigers, elephants, rhinos and orangutans still roam together in the wild. Farwiza has been campaigning to protect it for years, and it was so interesting to hear more about how she approaches conservation and how she collaborated with the communities who live in the area to get their voices heard and protect this precious ecosystem. She also shared why it matters to protect entire ecosystems rather than a few charismatic species, as well as her tips to start making change happen in your own community, and what gives her hope – a much needed reminder in today's world.Want to dive deeper?Follow Farwiza on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/wiiiiza/Check out her organisation HAkA — https://haka.or.id/Subscribe to the brand new Why We Care newsletter (thank you so much!)Subscribe to the newsletter — https://whywecare.substack.com/Come say hi!Why We Care on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it. As we put the final touches on our Season 2 premiere with Mike Gabbard, we're bringing you a replay of our conversation with Farhan Thawar, VP of Engineering at Shopify. Shopify has been a power user of AI coding assistants, gaining early access to GitHub Copilot before its general release. This episode is packed with insights on Shopify's culture, leadership, and how they leverage AI to ship better software faster. If you missed it the first time, now's the perfect chance to catch up—especially as it sets the stage for next week's discussion with Mike Gehard on AI-assisted product development. Enjoy, and we'll see you next week for the Season 2 premiere! -- In this episode of the Convergence Podcast, host Ashok Sivanand welcomes Farhan Thawar, the Vice President of Engineering at Shopify. Farhan's journey to Shopify came through the acquisition of Helpful, a company he co-founded. With a rich background in leadership roles at Microsoft, Trilogy, and as Vice President of Engineering at both Extreme Labs and Pivotal Labs—where Ashok had the pleasure of collaborating with him—Farhan brings a wealth of experience in building high-performing, engaging technical teams. This episode explores how Shopify, under Farhan's leadership, operates like a colossal experiment, constantly pushing the boundaries of experimentation and research and development across the company, not just within the product and engineering teams. Listeners will gain insights into Shopify's innovative use of generative AI to enhance customer and team experiences, the integration of tools like Copilot for pair programming, and the effective cultivation of a culture that fosters simplicity in code and robustness in product delivery. Farhan's approach to leadership has not only scaled to accommodate hundreds, if not thousands, of team members but has also maintained a strong focus on recruitment, attracting what he terms "F— yes candidates." The conversation also covers how Shopify's leadership remains deeply connected to their work and maintains technical sharpness, driving a culture where both the product and the people behind it thrive. Inside the episode... The learning mindset at Shopify. Code isn't the artifact. The learning is the artifact. The news of Bukayo Saka needing surgery has increased the doom and gloom around Arsenal, but it was a dominant night at Emirates Stadium as we beat Ipswich 1-0 to move into second place. Kai Havertz got the only goal of the game, and the man of the match award, on a night of slow football with little entertainment on offer. Adam Keys and Jamie Kent discuss the game and what Arsenal need to do in Saka's absence. Arsenal delivered a huge 5-1 with Gabriel Jesus looking like a player reborn as he was involved in all five of our goals, in a game that took us six points clear of City and helped apply pressure to Liverpool at the top. The win will hopefully mark a turning point for the team, who now have seven wins and three draws in the last 10 games and now need to build up a winning run to really go for the title. Football agent in training, and former Online Sports Editor at the Sun, Express and Evening Standard, Jamie Dickinson joins us to discuss the game to discuss a comfortable win for Arsenal against Palace at Selhurst Park. Arsenal progressed to the Carabao Cup semi final with a 3-2 win over Crystal Palace as Grabiel Jesus scored a stunning hat trick. Arsenal climbed to third place in the Champions League with a 3-0 win, but one that could have been a 9-0 win, with Bukayo Saka once again grabbing the headlines. The first half could have finished 6-0, but wasted chances meant that Arsenal we're nervously leading 1-0 at the break, and two late goals were required to seal the victory. Buster Posey, with one stroke of the pen, did more for the Giants in free agency than Farhan ever did when he inked shortstop Willie Adames to a 7-year, $182 million deal.
Arsenal once again dropped points against Fulham, with the result being the seventh winless tie of the season, putting us into third on a weekend that could have seen us put a dent in the gap at the top. The performance was dominant, but the result and the number of chances created was not to be desired, and Arsenal fans are left wondering whether the title race is truly over in December. Adam Keys and Monty discuss the win, Arteta's tactical decisions, the fan reaction and Man City's continued downfall in this action packed episode. Giants offseason goal of a SS is coming to a head this winter meetings, do they trade for a Correa or a Bo Bichette? Or do they pay Willy Adames? And what starter to they add?? Dodgers extend Tommy edman and of course defer money, and are heating up Teoscar talks that should materialize in the couple days. As well as bringing back Farhan to a front office role. Big bobby M brings a new rule to discuss and it's worse than you think, this and so much more on this weeks episode!
FOURmidable Arsenal make it four wins a row in all competitions as well four wins in a row vs Man Utd for the first time in their history. Goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba give Ruben Amiron his first defeat as Manchester United boss, and left the Gunners seven points behind Liverpool who stumbled to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle. Join Adam & Jamie as they discuss a cagey first half, the importance of squad depth, William Saliba being the man and even give a little praise to Ruben Amorim and Arne Slot. The brothers are discussing the coaching staff today including why fans can never truly understand the dark art of MLB coaching, where the 2024 Giants needed the most coaching, and the one area that definitely needs to get significantly better. The "Fire Farhan" brigade got their wish, but his replacement was a bit of a surprise. Buster Posey was named President of Baseball Operations of the San Francisco Giants. It's not often that a franchise icon gets a chance to run their team, but if anyone can succeed, it's Buster Posey. He was introduced Tuesday at Oracle Park and he promised to please the fans and players and get back to what San Francisco Giants' baseball is all about. This man appears to care deeply about this team, and is somewhat putting his reputation on the line. A few call this move desparate, but it seems that most Giants fans are 100% behind this move. I mean, could it be worse than Farhan? One playoff appearance and one winning record in 6 years suggests not. Farhan's time ran out. Maybe he was given too much rope as it is. Chad and Eric talk about this monumental decision in Giants history and the potential good and bad ramifications it could have on the franchise (we think mostly good!). www.torturecast.comfacebook.com/torturecast@torturecast

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Arab affairs correspondent Gianluca Pacchiani and political reporter Sam Sokol join host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Pacchiani discusses the Bedouin background of rescued hostage Farhan al-Qadi, and the little known about his family, who didn't speak to the press over the last eleven months of his captivity, preferring their privacy and given concerns about how Hamas would treat a Bedouin hostage. He also speaks about his recent analysis of the Hamas propaganda machine, and the psychology behind their extensive advertising and public relations, which always aligns with one message. Sokol talks about the latest brouhaha with Transportation Minister Miri Regev who was tapped to handle the government's official October 7 ceremony but is seen as the wrong person for the job because of her political leanings. Sokol also expands on the interview he and founding ToI editor David Horovitz conducted with opposition leader Yair Lapid, and Lapid's thoughts about how and when the Netanyahu government will come to an end.
