On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with Lofa Tatupu who played as a middle linebacker in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks. He was born in Samoa, and went on to play college football at the University of Southern California (USC) from 2001 to 2004, where he was a part of two Collegiate Championship teams. ‘We didn't care about anything other than winning each other and winning. And it was, the most fun you could ever picture football to be in 26 games. We went 25 and one. With two national titles, the one loss triple overtime, we turned the ball over five or six times to a guy by the name of Aaron Rodgers. You don't want to give him that many opportunities, I'll tell you that,' says Tatupu. The son of Mosi Tatupu who played 14 seasons in the NFL, Tatupu was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He quickly established himself as a key player on the Seahawks' defense and was named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons. ‘It was a lot of hard work, and I think that's what people don't see is they just get to see game day hoisting the national title. They don't see everything that went into it. The hours of film study, the workouts everything, all the practice. I definitely believe everything happens for a reason. I'd like to think I helped those teams, but I definitely fell into some great situations.' During his six seasons with the Seahawks, Tatupu helped lead the team to two NFC Championships and a Super Bowl appearance in 2006, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also named to the All-Pro team in 2007. Injuries began to take a toll on Tatupu's career, and he was released by the Seahawks in 2011. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2012 but was released before the start of the season. On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with former NHL Referee Lonnie Cameron. Born in Victoria, B.C., Cameron grew up in Colwood. The former goaltender began officiating at the age of 12 and played hockey until the age of 20. His last two seasons as a player were with the Estevan Bruins of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Cameron was hired by the Western Hockey League (WHL) at age of 23, a league where he would end up spending a total of 9 seasons, where he was selected to work 2 Memorial Cup championships. He skated in his first NHL Regular Season Game on October 5th, 1996 close to home in Vancouver, BC at the General Motors Place when the Calgary Flames were in town to play the Canucks. His last game was in Vancouver against San Jose, April 3, 2019. Cameron was instrumental in the implementation of video review technology to assist referees in making difficult calls and was known for his ability to control the game and maintain a high level of discipline among the players. ‘You either can either conform or you don't. If I have to hit my whistle, you aren't going to like the results here. From the standpoint of the coaching staff Pat Quinn, he being GM here, (Vancouver) those first years, he was really tough and intimidating. He just had a way about him'. Marjanovich asked Cameron about the travel required to be an NHL linesman. ‘It's not quite a full two game, two-day average, but you're 150 nights (in hotels) and about 20,000 miles, in the air to pull that off. It's hard on the body'. He was also respected for his communication skills, which he used to explain his calls to players and coaches in a calm and clear manner. His approach to officiating was always focused on the game and the players, rather than on himself or his own ego. Cameron was assigned to work the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway and officiated in the NHL for 23 seasons. One of the biggest highlights of my career. Something that I'll never forget. It was amazing.' After going undrafted in 2002, Gorges signed as a free agent with the San Jose Sharks. Gorges tells Marjanovich that he refused a trade from the Montreal Canadiens to the Toronto Maple Leafs. ‘When my agent called me and told me that I thought he was joking the first time. I said, they're not going to trade me to Toronto. That's one of our biggest rivals, that they don't make trades with each other. But then when I found out it was real, I just kept thinking, how could I go be the same player that I've been from Montreal, a heart and soul type guy? How could I do that for a team that I've hated for seven plus years? It was Toronto and Boston. You just couldn't imagine yourself playing for those teams after being in Montreal that long.' In addition to the Sharks and Canadiens, Gorges also played for the Buffalo Sabres, where he served as an alternate captain during his time there. He retired from professional hockey in 2019. On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with Ryan Johansen, center for the Nashville Predators of the (NHL). Born in Port Moody, Johansen's hockey career began when he played for the Penticton Vees in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) during the 2008-2009 season. He quickly made a name for himself as a standout player and was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Johansen made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets during the 2011-2012 season and quickly became a key player for the team. During the 2013-2014 season, Johansen had a breakout year, scoring 33 goals and recording 30 assists for a total of 63 points. He was named an NHL All-Star for the first time in his career that same season. Marjanovich asked Johansen what was the toughest thing about being a rookie in the national hockey league? ‘For me, it was the consistency. I'd go out one game and I'd make a couple big time plays and score a goal or make a nice assist, and then I wouldn't do anything for four games,' says Johansen. In January 2016, Johansen was traded to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Seth Jones. He has helped lead the team to multiple playoff appearances, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017 after sweeping the defending Stanley Cup champ Chicago Blackhawks in the first round. ‘We went into that series just like we're coming for their heads, we weren't losing no matter what,' says Johansen. ‘The motivation for me was just through the roof. We just steamrolled. We just kept going and going, but nothing distracted us. We were just a team on a mission, and man, it was so much fun'. Off the ice, Johansen has been involved with numerous organizations over the years, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Playing for six teams in his NHL career Roenick amassed 1200 points in 1300 games. Roenick was known for giving back to the fans, it was an understanding of what it meant to be the fan on the other side. Roenick tells Bob Marjanovich, ‘Gordie Howe dumped a bunch of snow on my head while I was watching the Hartford Whalers practice in when I was seven and then winked at me and ruffled my hair up, it was me and Gordie for 20 seconds, just the two of us. He picked me out, but for me it was a crazy cool experience'. Roenick said he wanted people and the fans to realize that acknowledgement was really important in life. Concussions, unfortunately were a part of the game for Roenick. ‘I took a hundred mile an hour shot and shattered my jaw in 28 places, had major concussion, missed nine weeks, and went right back into the playoffs. Only get another concussion in Toronto in the second round and get another mini concussion in round three in the conference finals against Tampa. On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with one of the outstanding young talents in the National Hockey League, New Jersey Devils defenseman, Damon Severson. He grew up playing minor hockey in the Brandon area before moving on to play for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL). ‘They're (The Rockets) are going to do anything they can to make sure they don't lose hockey games', says Severson. ‘I was fortunate enough to be on some real good teams, especially my last two years there. I think we won 57 out of 72 games, which is incredible'. He was a key member of the Rockets team that won the WHL championship in 2015, and he was named to the WHL First All-Star Team that same year. Severson was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the second round, 60th overall, of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut during the 2014-15 season and quickly established himself as a key player on the Devils' blue line. The defenseman tells the ‘MOJ', ‘I learned that I made the team out of training camp when I saw the roster released. No one said anything. About half hour before warmups, and Lou Lamoriello comes walking around the corner and he finds me and he goes, you're here for a reason. Show us. And that was really all he had to say'. Severson's size, physicality, and defensive skills make him a valuable asset for the team, and he has consistently been one of the Devils' top defensemen. On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with Rick Campbell, head coach of the B.C. Lions, who has been involved with the Canadian Football League (CFL) for over 20 years. Campbell's father, Hugh, was a legendary CFL coach who led the Edmonton Eskimos to five Grey Cup championships, so football runs in his blood. Campbell's coaching career began in 1999 as a defensive backs coach for the Calgary Stampeders. Over the years, he held various coaching positions with the Edmonton Eskimos, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and Calgary Stampeders. In 2014, he was named head coach of the expansion team Ottawa Redblacks, and in just his second season, he led them to their first-ever Grey Cup championship in 2016. This made him the first head coach in CFL history to lead an expansion team to a Grey Cup win in just their second season. In 2019, Campbell took over as head coach of the BC Lions, where he has continued to make a positive impact on the team. The ‘MOJ' asked Campbell, what were the traits that he was looking for in his athletes. ‘Number one is you have to have talent. If guys aren't talented enough, you can't win. But the thing that needs to be mixed in with the talent is character and some good people, throughout the building in the organization, whatever it is,' says Campbell. ‘The thing I did learn from my dad is that every hiring matters, whether it's the assistant equipment guy or whoever it is on the team, they all matter. So, you really want to think things through and I think that's what we're trying to do here is keep stacking positive pieces.' Campbell was asked about building winning organization. ‘It's when you go through a tough time, if you go through a tough loss or you have a losing streak or whatever happens, that's where you really find out if people will hang in. And, keep their head down and keep working and not point fingers and do all those things. If you got that, that's where the magic happens.' On this edition of ‘MOJ on Sports', host Bob Marjanovich talks with Troy Stecher, the Richmond, British Columbia, native. The defenseman played for the Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes. In a recent trade, the Calgary Flames acquired Stecher from Arizona. Stecher played junior hockey for the Penticton Vees in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and was named the league's top defenseman in the 2012-2013 season. He then attended the University of North Dakota, where he played for the school's hockey team for three seasons and helped them win a National Championship in 2016. ‘I was the only non-drafted player in my freshman class, so I knew going into play I was going to have to outperform players that were, in a way ranked higher than I was at a different level during the same times of our career. So, if I knew I could outperform them, then I would be on the right path. I just kept that mentality and it worked out', says Stecher. In April 2016, Stecher signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks and made his NHL debut in October of the same year. He played three seasons with the Canucks, during which he established himself as a reliable defenseman with good puck-moving abilities. Stecher talked about being injured and missing playing time. ‘I've embraced all the challenges that have come with it and there's a saying that we talked about a couple of us guys, every once in a while, we'll be like, there's no good with no bad. You can never really enjoy the good times if you don't have any bad times. I think everything does happen for a reason, as cliche as that sounds'. Off the ice, Stecher is known for his involvement in charity work. He is also an advocate for mental health awareness and has spoken openly about his own struggles with anxiety.
