For many years I have thought about the word BOASTING. What does it mean to boast? Marvin J Ashton said “Boasting is to glorify oneself, to talk in a vain or bragging manner, or to talk especially about one's deeds. Boasting is to speak with pride and to take pride in, to brag about, to be proud to possess. Oftentimes, boastful people are starving for attention. Boastful people may not be aware of the consequences caused by their method of presentation.” I've been sick the last few days and as I was reading my scriptures, I saw the word "boast" and that led my mind to a conversation I had with one of my brothers. I decided to read some more talks and look at some other scriptures about being boastful and share with you some of these thoughts. If you're a parent, your advice to your children probably at some point whenever they were at someone's house was either to "treat this house like it is your own" or "leave it better than when you got there". This reminds me of a recent quote I saw from Marvin J. Ashton saying: “Be the one who nurtures and builds. Be the one who has an understanding and a forgiving heart one who looks for the best in people. Leave people better than you found them.”This truly encapsulates a Christian mindset when it comes to our treatment of others not just because the golden rule commands us to "do unto others as you'd have them do unto you" (Matthew 7:12), but because it reveals that more often than not, you have to do for others what you wish others had done for you but didn't. We go beyond what we feel we deserve and treat others graciously in our approach giving them beyond the expectation of what they feel they deserve when it comes to how we treat them.I'm reminded of what Hebrews 10:24 says:“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.”When life is tough, and the outcome looks bleak, we remember how He has never forgotten nor forsaken His creation. We are to look back and recount how we've been blessed, how we've been spared, how we've been shaped and molded. When you make an active effort to leave people or things better than before, you'll find that God will shape you more and more into the image of His Son, Jesus. Be the reason that somebody believes in the goodness of God today.

Even if our goal doesn't fall under the category of spiritual growth, there is most likely a spiritual component connected to it. For example, let's say I set a goal to become more physically fit by exercising 5 days a week. On the surface, this is a temporal goal, but the underlying principle is spiritual--treating our body as a temple and honoring it by caring for it. Another underlying principle has to do with winning the battle of spirit over flesh.Another goal might be to set aside a certain amount of money each payday. Again, on the surface, this is a temporal goal, but there is an underlying principle that is spiritual----that we free ourselves from the bondage of debt so we are free to use those funds in ways that can benefit others. Other underlying principles are the principles of provident living and self-reliance. As I have thought back to the goals I set in January, I can see that most of my temporal goals, do indeed, have a spiritual counterpart. But I also noticed something else that surprised me. Some of my goals weren't really goals. They were just action steps. In the past 3-4 months, I've come to understand some important points related to setting goals. In this episode, I share three of them.KEY POINTS#1: Goals are about growth and becoming. Marvin J. Ashton said this, “The direction in which we are moving is more important than where we are at the moment. Goat setting should cause us to stretch as we make our way.” I hear two important principles in this statement. 1. Goals are meant to help us move beyond where we are at the moment, and 2. Goals require effort. If our goals don't cause us to stretch or grow, can they really be considered goals? Stretching requires opposition. Resistance. If what we set as goals are merely accomplishments we hope to check off, then maybe it would be more appropriate to refer to them as items on our “To Do” list for the year. Nothing wrong with that. It's good to have a bucket list for the year.#2: Begin with the end in mind. In a 1984 BYU Devotional, Elder Russell M. Nelson asked the question, “What would you like said about you at your funeral? Or, if you were to write your own eulogy and you could have only three sentences, what would you want to say?” #3: Once we define, it's time to design & refine. We've all heard about setting SMART goals: Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, timely, ---- or whatever set of words your organization uses for the acronym. If you're anything like me, then you may find yourself trying so hard to make your spiritual goals “SMART,” that you lose sight of their ultimate purpose: Becoming. As you revisit the goals you set for yourself back in January, ask yourself if they point to a desired outcome. Do they have the potential to help you grow and become a better version of yourself?“There is no growth in the comfort zone; there is no comfort in the growth zone.” (Steve Clark)DO ONE THINGWrite down how you hope to be remembered at your funeral in only three sentences. A person is poor when he is friendless, but even poorer when he ceases to be a friend. "We are poor when we think that getting by is doing our best. Virtue, action, and truth properly blended in life make a person rich." - Marvin J. Ashton

“The American Dream has always been classified as an aspiration to own your own piece of real estate.” – Brian Buffini Homeownership is the cornerstone of the American Dream. In this episode, Brian explains why real estate has been the making of him in his career, as a provider for his family and as a primary source of investment. Topics discussed include why people’s homes were their refuge during the COVID-19 pandemic, why owning is better than renting and why, for many people, the mortgage interest write-off could be the difference between being a renter and being an owner. Ashton “As an immigrant, I didn't feel like I belonged in America until I owned a home.” – Brian Buffini “A house is made with walls and beams. A home is made with love and dreams.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson “Real estate cannot be lost or stolen, nor can it be carried away. Purchased with common sense, paid for in full and managed with reasonable care, it is about the safest investment in the world.” – Franklin D. No, it can't. But can it contribute to your happiness? Absolutely.” – Brian Buffini “Owning a home is a keystone of wealth – both financial affluence and emotional security.” – Suze Orman “The strength of a nation derives from the integrity of the home.” – Confucius “Buy real estate, hold it and then buy some more.” – Brian Buffini “If you don’t own a home, buy one. Let's focus on our own unique skills, gifts and talents. Everyone has something...something pretty amazing, it's time we see it as that. Show notes: "One of the great tragedies of life, it seems to me, is when a person classifies himself as someone who has no talents or gifts. When, in disgust or discouragement, we allow ourselves to reach depressive levels of despair because of our demeaning self-appraisal, it is a sad day for us and a sad day in the eyes of God. For us to conclude that we have no gifts when we judge ourselves by stature, intelligence, grade-point average, wealth, power, position, or external appearance is not only unfair but unreasonable." Marvin J. Ashton, Gifts of the Spirit Superpower List (not all inclusive): The ability to make friends, to smile, to be empathetic, to be spontaneous, the ability to comfort, to listen, to cry, to recognize truth, to ponder, to articulate thoughts, to be cheerful, optimistic, confident, to be courageous, curious, creative, dedicated, determined, generous, helpful, hardworking, honest, humble, the ability to be organized, peaceful, punctual, calm, tolerant, skeptical, loyal, adaptable, being a finisher, having "mom" power, taking naps. All of these are unique gifts that lie within us, we encourage you to be open and to discover and seek your superpowers. Trio and Alicia

You are in for a treat today as you listen to our dear Momma Verla share her wisdom and her wit. Momma Verla shares a touching story about a young man who, after years of struggling with addictions and spending time in jail, is finally able to turn his life around. He attributes his success to the influence of his sweet mother who never gave up on him. As I listened to this podcast, I am reminded of this beautiful quote by Marvin J. Ashton: “What is meant by the statement, ‘No success can compensate for failure in the home?’” Knowing a little of the burdens this friend of mine carries in her mind and heart because of a rebellious, wayward daughter, I shared this meaning with her: I believe we start to fail in the home when we give up on each other. We have not failed until we have quit trying. As long as we are working diligently with love, patience, and long-suffering, despite the odds or the apparent lack of progress, we are not classified as failures in the home. We only start to fail when we give up on a son, daughter, mother, or father.” Momma Verla reminds us that the influence of a mother is a precious gift and even though we may not realize it at the moment, our efforts will have a lasting impact in the lives of our children. This episode correlates with the week of January 14-20 in the Come Follow Me manual. "We Have Come to Worship Him." In this podcast, I ramble on about all the great things that have happened this last week and talk more in-depth about the Christmas story and nativity from Luke 2 and Matthew 2. I talk about all the different people who took part in that miraculous event and share a little tidbit I learned about swaddling clothes. I reference a talk by Marvin J. Ashton. I discuss different ways that people feel the spirit and then talk about how to help protect our families. I also make fun of my brother for not being able to exaggerate and throw my aunts under the bus for leaving me at the airport when I was 5.
Daily Devotion: When you find yourself in a downward spiral heading toward depression, the one way to turn your situation around is to fully surrender yourself to God. Surrendering leads to restoration in your relationship with God. All God wants is for all of you to come back to Him, completely. Surrender your life, marriage and family to God, today. Romans 12:1, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship." "Be the one who nurtures and builds. Be the one who has an understanding and a forgiving heart one who looks for the best in people. Leave people better than you found them."― Marvin J. Ashton
