Your story is real, but does it get to rewrite what God said? We start with grief and lived experience, then push into a question that gets uncomfortable fast: does my life line up with the Word of God, or have I made myself an exception. When we build beliefs on pain, tradition, or what sounds good, we can end up sincerely convinced and still off course. We also talk about the “buffet” version of modern Christianity: endless denominations, endless opinions, and a growing habit of choosing what we like instead of testing everything against Scripture. We challenge the popular claim that many paths lead to God and bring it back to the Bible's insistence on one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. The goal is clarity, not hype, and a faith anchored in truth rather than personality or culture. Then we walk through what the gospel is and what it means to obey it. Using 1 Corinthians 15, we define the gospel as Jesus Christ crucified, buried, and risen. The big question becomes practical: how do you obey that message? Chris is away, so Jo and Alex soldier on alone for a deep dive into Romans chapter one. After a quick recap of last episode's discussion on authorship, occasion, and audience, they move into the text itself, working through it in three sections: verses one to seven, eight to fifteen, and sixteen through to the end of the chapter.  The first section covers Paul's dense opening sentence, in which he stacks up three self-designations: slave, apostle, and one set apart for the gospel - that foreshadow themes he unpacks across the rest of the letter. Jo and Alex trace the Hebrew and Greco-Roman background behind these titles, before turning to verses sixteen and seventeen, which they treat as the theme statement for the whole book. Much of the middle of the episode is given over to "the righteousness of God," running through the Augustinian, Reformed, and "New Perspective" readings, and landing on N.T. Wright's suggestion that the phrase carries covenantal, forensic, and eschatological layers all at once.  The back half of the chapter, Paul's account of humanity exchanging the Creator for creation, gets careful handling. Jo and Alex read verses eighteen to thirty-two alongside the Wisdom of Solomon and the early chapters of Genesis, arguing Paul is diagnosing a universal human condition rather than pointing to any one group or behaviour. It's a thoughtful reminder that Paul's argument is building toward the conclusion that everyone, Jew and Gentile alike, stands in need of the same solution. What Paul writes to Timothy in our Scripture passage for today takes on extra meaning when you consider that dark place where Paul was incarcerated. Isn't it ironic that the very last thing the faithful, chained saint gave his young colleague was the ultimate Key? Join us as we look at some of the remarkable insights that the Apostle Paul gives Timothy, and us, in this last piece of correspondence before his execution.
