Sometimes it can be hard to know how we can use our time and energy for good in the world, but Heavenly Father has given us the choice in how we can bless others around us. As we consider all our to-do lists and wanting to put our energy into every good thing around us, we must choose where to put our efforts and even consciously choose to neglect things we can let go of. In this episode, we are giving ourselves permission to restructure the to-do lists and find what will guide us to blessings ourselves and others around us.   "We can do it all, we just can't do it all at once."   This conversation was inspired by Dr. Julie Valentine's speech at a BYU Devotional in 2021. Years ago, Peggy Worthen, wife of newly installed BYU president Kevin Worthen, spoke to the gathered student body. In her talk she referenced highway 6, a Utah road that leads from Provo to the eastern side of the state, including the famous Arches National Park in Moab. In 1983 this road was blocked as a massive rockslide covered the road and blocked the river causing massive flooding. A new road had to be constructed. Although the temporary inconvenience was major, the newly build road was much wide, much safer, and ultimately a much better path through the mountains. Maybe it's because over the past years of living in the East we have come to appreciate the non-linear, swerving roads that spread like spiderwebs here and contrast sharply with the linear roads of the west, but I loved Sister Worthen's observation that "life is somewhat like Highway 6. Even though life in general is beautiful and scenic, the road we travel will not always be an uneventful, direct course, even when we know where we are going. We have to learn to be flexible and to deal with the unexpected." In our study this week we look at the unexpected and hope to find a bit flexibility in our relationship with the Lord. New Social Justice Fervor for BYU Devotionals BYU's guest Devotional speaker last week was the Reverend Dr. Willaim Barber II. He spoke of forming political coalitions and a "Moral March" on Washington. While not quite a leftist like Ibram Kendi, Barber is a political activist who preached a political sermon at the BYU Devotional. Ashlee Ayre is a 20 year old woman who loves acting and playing the piano. She comes from a large family and also became addicted to pornography at age 11 starting with looking up pictures and words in a dictionary she found in her home. In the interview, Ashlee discusses her experiences with quitting pornography several times in her teen years but never really experiencing healing until she turned to the Savior. She shares how we can change the discussion about pornography in the church from shame to emphasizing the beauty of repentance through Christ's atonement instead. Ashlee acknowledges that the single greatest thing that has helped has been knowing her divine worth as an “amazing daughter of God.” Journal Questions The Life Help section of the church's Gospel Library app is a great resource when you need guidance and help with challenges. The section for pornography provides ways you can help yourself, your spouse, your child or others. Open up the Gospel Library app on your phone and click on the Life Help button. Explore the topics you feel guided to to help yourself and those around you.   Ashlee shared that a major shift happened in her healing when she started to understand her worth. President Nelson was once asked how to help those struggling with pornography and his response was “Teach them their identity and their purpose.” President Nelson's counsel can apply to any personal challenge. How can you learn more about your identity and purpose? How can you help those you serve such as your children or youth you know understand their worth and purpose?   Satan wants us to feel shame and keep the things we are struggling with to ourselves. But as Ashlee shared, when we are humble and open up, we can get the help we need. Sharing also helps us get out of darkness and shame and step into the light and love of Jesus Christ and the repentance His atonement offers. Is there something you are keeping inside that feels dark and shameful? Who could you share it with to let the Savior's light in to your journey? Pray for guidance to know how to share your struggle. My guests on the podcast this week are Jeff and Tammy Hill. Tammy Hill is a licensed marriage and family therapist, sex therapist and a professor for the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University. She teaches marriage preparation, marriage enhancement and healthy sexuality in marriage courses. Jeff is also a professor at the same university teaching family finance courses. So naturally I asked them about how to talk to our kids about developing a healthy relationship with sexuality and money. We talked about common stumbling blocks parents face when addressing these issues, advice for teaching young children, older children, teens and young adults about sex and money and concepts that are often overlooked. The goal for this episode is to help you feel empowered to be your children's best resource for information about topics that are hard to address. We hope this will be helpful to those of you who are parents at any stage. Even if our goal doesn't fall under the category of spiritual growth, there is most likely a spiritual component connected to it. For example, let's say I set a goal to become more physically fit by exercising 5 days a week. On the surface, this is a temporal goal, but the underlying principle is spiritual--treating our body as a temple and honoring it by caring for it. Another underlying principle has to do with winning the battle of spirit over flesh.Another goal might be to set aside a certain amount of money each payday. Again, on the surface, this is a temporal goal, but there is an underlying principle that is spiritual----that we free ourselves from the bondage of debt so we are free to use those funds in ways that can benefit others. Other underlying principles are the principles of provident living and self-reliance. As I have thought back to the goals I set in January, I can see that most of my temporal goals, do indeed, have a spiritual counterpart. But I also noticed something else that surprised me. Some of my goals weren't really goals. They were just action steps. In the past 3-4 months, I've come to understand some important points related to setting goals. In this episode, I share three of them.KEY POINTS#1:  Goals are about growth and becoming.  Marvin J. Ashton said this, “The direction in which we are moving is more important than where we are at the moment. Goat setting should cause us to stretch as we make our way.” I hear two important principles in this statement. 1. Goals are meant to help us move beyond where we are at the moment, and 2. Goals require effort. If our goals don't cause us to stretch or grow, can they really be considered goals? Stretching requires opposition. Resistance. If what we set as goals are merely accomplishments we hope to check off, then maybe it would be more appropriate to refer to them as items on our “To Do” list for the year. Nothing wrong with that. It's good to have a bucket list for the year.#2:  Begin with the end in mind.  In a 1984 BYU Devotional, Elder Russell M. Nelson asked the question, “What would you like said about you at your funeral? Or, if you were to write your own eulogy and you could have only three sentences, what would you want to say?”  #3:  Once we define, it's time to design & refine. We've all heard about setting SMART goals:  Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, timely, ---- or whatever set of words your organization uses for the acronym. If you're anything like me, then you may find yourself trying so hard to make your spiritual goals “SMART,” that you lose sight of their ultimate purpose:  Becoming.As you revisit the goals you set for yourself back in January, ask yourself if they point to a desired outcome. Certain scripture passages that mention light always seem to capture my attention---such as those found in D&C 93 and 88, or the familiar ones found in the Book of Mormon. Yet even though I have made this a regular focus of study, I often get the feeling I’m missing something---the feeling that if I only knew how to dive a little deeper I would uncover some hidden truths or spiritual buried treasures. Come to find out, I’m not alone in this. I recently came across a BYU Devotional given by Richard Draper, Professor of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University. Turns out at one time he found some of the passages in sections 88 and 93 of the D&C a little baffling too. So I guess I’m in good company :-) The theme for Season 2 of the Edified Podcast is “Light where you are.” More specifically, looking at ways we have been invited to let our light shine in a manner that points the way to the Savior and lights both the world around us and the world within us. Between now and our April 2021 General Conference, we'll be looking at the principles taught, the invitations extended, and the blessings promised during the October General Conference. Welcome to the Family Culture Movement!  From this point forward my interviews will take on a new format. The main question I will ask of all my guests is, what needs to change in the dominant culture according to their area of expertise. I have interviews lined up through the end of the year with this question front and center in the discussion. I was inspired by a BYU Devotional from Jonathan Sandberg in his talk "Healing = Courage + Action + Grace." One part, in particular, stood out to me. He said, “…We have to develop the courage to live counter to the world’s dominant culture. You know what I am talking about—the cul­ture in which money, sex, material possessions, fame, violent behavior, and carnal exploits are the currency for success. We live in a world in which appearance and approval are the keys to social status and power. In order to find healing, we have to develop the courage to say no to this dominant culture. I love what Morrie Schwartz said to Mitch Albom about living counter to the culture in the book Tuesdays with Morrie: “The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We’re teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say if the cul­ture doesn’t work, don’t buy it. Create your own. “A number of wonderful BYU devotionals have described the unhealthy culture of per­ceived perfectionism and how we have to fight against it. In two devotionals given last year, both Tyler J. Jarvis and Kristin L. Matthews encouraged us to be more accepting of our imperfections and to be more pleased with our best approximations, our bodies, our gifts, and our differences. I encourage you to reread their talks. “Listen to what President Thomas S. Monson said about having the courage to live by truth and to avoid the unhealthy dominant culture: “Let us have the courage to defy the consensus, the courage to stand for principle. Courage, not compromise, brings the smile of God’s approval. . . . A moral coward is one who is afraid to do what he thinks is right because others will disapprove or laugh. “In her delightful way, author and devoted mother and grandmother Marjorie Pay Hinckley described the peace that comes when we refuse to compare and despair, as the ominant culture teaches: “Fifty was my favorite age. It takes about that long to learn to quit competing—to be yourself and settle down to living. It is the age I would like to be through all eternity! “In order to find healing, we have to develop the courage to avoid the culture that says there is only one acceptable way (i.e., a specific size, hair color, or ACT score) to be a good person or even a good Christian. There are many, many ways to be a righteous, positive influence in the world. Today I am doing a solo episode talking about how to eliminate distractions and always have the Spirit. This content was originally a devotional I wrote and presented at a recent girls camp. Feel free to use this episode as a resource to help you teach your older children or other youth. Can You Hear the Music of the Spirit? I shared a story told by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf about a violinist dressed in jeans who plays in a busy subway. Elder Uchtdorf uses this story to illustrate how we might miss the spirit in our life. The story shows why it’s important to slow down, eliminate distractions and always have the spirit with us. What the Still Small Voice Sounds Like These three scriptures help paint the picture of what the still small voice sounds like: 1 Kings 19:11-12 – Elijah hears the voice of the Lord as he hiding because Jezebel wants to kill him. 3 Nephi 11:3 – The Nephites have just gone through great destruction. They hear God’s voice introducing the Savior. Helaman 5:30 – Nephi and Lehi are imprisoned and fire encircles them. The earth shakes and the people hear a voice. Ways You Might Feel the Spirit I shared 9 possible ways (and there are many more) you might feel the Spirit. You can read the accompanying scriptures and ponder on whether you feel the Spirit in this way. The Constant Influence of the Holy Ghost In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost. President Russell M. Nelson I talked about a time in my life where I learned the importance of eliminating distractions that were keeping me from the influence of the Holy Ghost. How to hear the Holy Ghost and Eliminate Distractions Here are some questions you can ask yourself. What are the distractions that are keeping me from the still small voice in my life? How can I eliminate those distractions? The sacrament prayers give us clues of how we can eliminate distractions in our life. See the prayers in D&C 20 verses 77 and 79. “Always” Have His Spirit “Always” is a promise we are given. I looked up the definition in the dictionary and it said this: “at all times, forever, at any rate, in any event.”  Then the dictionary listed the synonyms to the word always: consistently, constantly, continually, ever, forever, incessantly, invariably, night and day, perpetually, unfailing. Our main challenge as humans is against ourselves, not against each other. We think people and things and circumstances outside of us are our biggest challenge, but the truth is our challenge is with ourselves. When we live in a state of constant comparison, it leads us to choosing to believe that we are either "dust of the earth," good for nothing, and worthless, OR that we are super important, and better than someone else. The adversary wants us to CHOOSE ONE or the other, because both beliefs create sin and misery. The truth is we are BOTH SIMULTANEOUSLY. Choosing one or the other (dust or super duper important) dismisses God's hand in our life and His hand in our creation. BOTH perspectives cause us to take all the credit for our creation. Both are self-absorbed ways of living. Both feel terrible. If we are to understand who we are and what we're doing here, we also have to accept that we are SIMULTANEOUSLY BOTH dust AND the greatest of God's creations! God only compares us to old us. Me to old me. Our challenge is NOT against each other. It's only against ourselves. Dan Clark is an award winning motivational speaker and best selling author. He has traveled to 59 countries in the world motivating the masses to create a life of significance. He has also served as a Young Single Adult (YSA) bishop (twice). I first came across Dan's speaking ability when I listened to his BYU Devotional. It inspired me to be a better leader in the Church and it inspired me to get him on the podcast as soon as possible. After a few miraculous encounters, I was able to meet Dan and he willingly agreed to sit down with me for an interview.
