In this special end of year mini-series, I continue to look back at the highlights of 2022, and the conversations that have set the world of discussion alight on the On A Mission Podcast. In Part 2 we revisit the highlights of my conversation with Barry Hearn, one of the most legendary sports promoters and business minds of modern times, having revolutionised and popularised such sporting staples as snooker, football, darts and boxing, managing such greats as Chris Eubank, and founding the Matchroom Sports empire that continues to dominate the landscape of British sports entertainment. This episode was packed with inspirational insights, and showed the astounding business acumen of a man whose intellect and savvy charisma has lit up the world of sports and business for an entire generation. It's not hard to see why this has been one of our most popular episodes to date. KEY TAKEAWAYS Even when you fail, the ability to compartmentalise that failure, take the learnings, and put it behind you, is a skill that helps to drive the greatest to the top of their respective fields in business and life. You don't ever have to be the smartest one in the room in order to make a success of yourself. Sometimes all it takes is the will to succeed, and the ability to move between the worlds of business and life. Adaptability is key. Business and sport are far more similar than we realise. The same rules apply, If you want to be a success, don't talk about it - do something about it. You have to put the work in. Finding your place in the world isn't always about looking to the world of business and focussing upon wealth. Some merely wish to be happy and make a difference in their own small way. What's important is that no one criticises anyone for the choices they make. BEST MOMENTS 'I knew early doors that I was no academic, I was never going to be a genius' 'Barry Hearn is equally at home in the boardroom as he is on the cobbles' 'I can adapt like a chameleon' 'Just be the best you can be' VALUABLE RESOURCES On A Mission - https://omny.fm/shows/on-a-mission Matchroom Sport - https://matchroom.com Matchroom Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/matchroom Matchroom Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/matchroom/ Barry Hearn Book - https://amzn.to/3euBeIc ABOUT THE HOST Not so long ago, life was barely recognisable for Ellie McKay, raising three children under five, battling post-natal depression, facing redundancy and walking into the job centre to claim benefits with a double pram, no confidence, and wracked with insecurities. At just 24 years old, James Tennyson had already travelled a hardened road within the world of professional boxing and had sampled the highs and lows that were par for this most testing of courses. Having turned over at just 18, the young boy had shown his ferocious power with 7 KOs in his first 8 fights, and despite suffering a shock defeat early in his career to a journeyman, it wouldn't affect his ascent as ‘The Assassin' continued to leave opponents lying in his wake Fighting on the undercards of Ryan Burnett's world title shows in Belfast, Tennyson would impress Matchroom's Eddie Hearn with destructive performances over Ryan Doyle and Darren Traynor and would work his way into contention for the Commonwealth and EBU European Super-Featherweight titles as the away fighter against one of Matchroom's hottest young prospects - Martin Jospeh Ward. Featuring insight from Sky Sports Commentator Andy Clarke. Archive courtesy of Matchroom Sports.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with boxers Anthony Joshua and Dominic Breazeale, and Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Showtime Sports, and Eddie Hearn, President of Matchroom Sports, about the June 25 Joshua-Breazeale fight and the future of boxing and the heavyweight division. The fight between the IBF champ Joshua (16-0, 16 KOs) and the challenger Breazeale (17-0, 15 KOs) headlines a card at The O2 in London, which will be shown live on Sky Sports Box Office in the U.K. and on Showtime in the U.S. While both fighters are thus far unbeaten as pros, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist Joshua is a big favorite in this fight. Joshua is viewed by many as the heir apparent to the title of world heavyweight champion, and as the next major international superstar in boxing. We spoke with them on a media conference call Wednesday. With all the hype and prognostications about his future, Anthony Joshua is trying to stay focused on one thing: boxing. "I only see great things if I stay locked away in the gym," he said. For his part, Dominic Breazeale is not intimidated by the hoopla surrounding his opponent. "It's great," he said. "All the distractions are on Anthony. It's something he's got to deal with." And we discussed when Anthony Joshua might fight in America, his new deal with Showtime, and more.
