Eddie Hearn – Chairman of Matchroom Sport – on Katie Taylor's trailblazing rise to superstardom, and how she lifted the sport of women's boxing up with her.   Despite his early skepticism of the commercial viability of women's boxing, Hearn took a meeting with Taylor out of respect for what she'd already done for the sport at the amateur and Olympic levels. He was blown away by her passion and personality and signed her to headline a fight despite doubt from many critics. Of course, Taylor then went on to become one of the most famous (and highly-paid) fighters in the world.   Listen to the full episode here: https://nvgt.com/podcast?ppplayer=98f56b6dd6dca41729f186d12a4d1251&ppepisode=240464c943fbf730fa11d4a5f752b403   For more insights, visit our LinkedIn page or learn more about Navigate at https://nvgt.com/.

The qualifying rounds took place from 3 to 12 April 2023 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. The 15th and final ranking tournament of the 2022–23 snooker season, it was organised by the World Snooker Tour and sponsored for the first time by car retailer Cazoo. It was broadcast in the United Kingdom by the BBC, in Europe by Eurosport, and elsewhere in the world by Matchroom Sport and other broadcasters. The total prize fund was £2,395,000, of which the winner received £500,000.Ronnie O'Sullivan was the defending champion, having defeated Judd Trump 18–13 in the 2022 final. He made a record 31st Crucible appearance, surpassing the 30 appearances by Steve Davis, and reached a record-extending 21st quarter-final—also becoming the first player to compete in 100 matches at the Crucible—but lost 10–13 to Belgian player Luca Brecel. Crucible debutants at the event were Fan Zhengyi, Jak Jones, Pang Junxu, Si Jiahui, and Wu Yize. Si, aged 20, became the first debutant to reach the semi-finals since Andy Hicks at the 1995 event and the youngest player to do so since O'Sullivan at the 1996 event. Brecel came from 5–14 behind in the semi-finals to defeat Si 17–15, the first time a player had won a match at the Crucible after trailing by nine frames. Brecel went on to defeat Mark Selby 18–15 in the final, winning his first world title, first Triple Crown title, and fourth ranking title. He became the sport's first world champion from mainland Europe. The event's main stage produced 90 century breaks. For the second time, after the 2008 event, two maximum breaks occurred at the main stage of the tournament: Kyren Wilson made a maximum in his first-round match against Ryan Day, and Selby became the first player to make a maximum in a World Championship final. O'Sullivan made both his 1,200th century in professional competition and his 200th Crucible century at the event. The qualifying rounds produced another 135 centuries, including a 115 break by Ng On-yee, the highest by a woman in the tournament's history. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:51 UTC on Thursday, 26 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2023 World Snooker Championship on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Aditi.

This week, we are delighted to welcome Frank Smith. Frank first worked within Matchroom as a 14-year-old on work experience, and started full time in September 2008 after he left school. Having worked across many of the sports that Matchroom promote, Frank joined the Boxing department full-time in 2011 and worked his way through the ranks to assume the post of CEO in April 2018. Frank was appointed to the main board of the group's parent company, Matchroom Sport, in December 2018. In today's episode, we discuss: From internship to CEO: How chasing down Eddie Hearn's car led to a job at Matchroom. As CEO of the boxing department, what are Frank's key roles in the business and how does it complement Eddie's work? The value of working in a family run business with a culture that encourages you to push yourself, try new things, and not worry about failing. How to be taken seriously as a young CEO in an industry that places huge demands on  leaders. Lessons from working with Barry and Eddie Hearn. Putting on the big fights: Why it is so important for boxing to put on the biggest fights and give the fans the match-ups they want. The challenges associated with agreeing deals and pre-fight negotiations: purse splits, media rights, location. How Anthony Joshua doesn't let the details stop him from agreeing to fight and why more boxers need to worry less about the small print and more about the overall value. The rise of Saudi Arabia has presented new opportunities to take boxing to different audiences and drive more revenue for all involved. How governments are using boxing fights to promote their countries on a global stage. What happens when a fighter fails a drug test, and how does that impact the wider business?  The future of boxing: The rise of influencer boxing and the new opportunities it provides the sport. Does Frank view it as a corruption of the professional end or opportunity to build new audience and brands? Influencer vs. influencer is better than professional vs. influencer, but the pay packets are now often too large to turn down. How Matchroom had the opportunity to build an influencer division but chose to focus on professional boxing. The rise of women's boxing: new audience, grassroots development, commercial growth. What next? How does the company keep innovating and ensure they are representing the best talent and putting on the best shows.

In this special end of year mini-series, I continue to look back at the highlights of 2022, and the conversations that have set the world of discussion alight on the On A Mission Podcast.  In Part 2 we revisit the highlights of my conversation with Barry Hearn, one of the most legendary sports promoters and business minds of modern times, having revolutionised and popularised such sporting staples as snooker, football, darts and boxing, managing such greats as Chris Eubank, and founding the Matchroom Sports empire that continues to dominate the landscape of British sports entertainment. This episode was packed with inspirational insights, and showed the astounding business acumen of a man whose intellect and savvy charisma has lit up the world of sports and business for an entire generation. It's not hard to see why this has been one of our most popular episodes to date.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Even when you fail, the ability to compartmentalise that failure, take the learnings, and put it behind you, is a skill that helps to drive the greatest to the top of their respective fields in business and life. You don't ever have to be the smartest one in the room in order to make a success of yourself. Sometimes all it takes is the will to succeed, and the ability to move between the worlds of business and life. Adaptability is key. Business and sport are far more similar than we realise. The same rules apply, If you want to be a success, don't talk about it - do something about it. You have to put the work in. Finding your place in the world isn't always about looking to the world of business and focussing upon wealth. Some merely wish to be happy and make a difference in their own small way. What's important is that no one criticises anyone for the choices they make. BEST MOMENTS 'I knew early doors that I was no academic, I was never going to be a genius' 'Barry Hearn is equally at home in the boardroom as he is on the cobbles' 'I can adapt like a chameleon' 'Just be the best you can be' VALUABLE RESOURCES On A Mission - https://omny.fm/shows/on-a-mission   Matchroom Sport - https://matchroom.com Matchroom Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/matchroom Matchroom Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/matchroom/  Barry Hearn Book - https://amzn.to/3euBeIc ABOUT THE HOST Not so long ago, life was barely recognisable for Ellie McKay, raising three children under five, battling post-natal depression, facing redundancy and walking into the job centre to claim benefits with a double pram, no confidence, and wracked with insecurities. His charismatic personality made him an absolute dream to interview, this conversation is laced with decades of wisdom on what it really takes to achieve such a phenomenal level of success. Trust me when I say it will have you hooked from start to finish!  KEY TAKEAWAYS Building a successful life is like building a house. You have to make sure the foundations are strong. You gain new rooms and firmer foundations through finding the lessons in every moment. Being the best at something requires a different kind of mindset. It's the force of will that pushes you to give 100%, rather than 90%. The greatest are those who truly do give it everything. Life's too short to spend it looking back. Never dwell on failures or letdowns. Pick yourself up, point yourself in the right direction and move on. There are barriers to entry in every aspect of life, but these are usually remnants of the past. Changing the world takes time, but we're gradually stripping away the systemic barriers that hold us back BEST MOMENTS 'It's that mindset in business where you say "Is this the best your company can be?"' 'Don't spend a second of your life looking back. You write it off. You flush the toilet. You move on' 'If you start with a short-term narrow approach such as "I wanna make a load of money", then you'll never get there' 'We can't change history. Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury Promo PLEASE SUPPORT THE PODCAST using this link: https://anchor.fm/tk0442/support The expectation is that Anthony Joshua will fight Tyson Fury in 2021 as part of a two-fight deal being brokered between Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Sport and Fury's promoter Bob Arum. It seems almost certain that the first leg of Joshua vs Fury will happen in Saudi Arabia, and it seems most likely that this will be Joshua's next engagement. Of course, because this is heavyweight boxing. Joshua may have a mandatory obligation first. He had to fight Pulev as he was the IBF mandatory challenger; Joshua also holds the WBA and WBO titles and the WBO's mandatory challenger would be Oleksandr Usyk. Probably not. Usyk is also managed by Hearn, who will not want to delay a fight against Fury. However, if Fury decides to take a tune-up bout before facing Joshua, that delay could give Joshua the time to face Usyk. Another option for Joshua is that he vacates the WBO title, making way for his stablemate. Usyk is a dangerous customer, a southpaw, and Joshua would not be able to take him lightly. He's small and has come up from cruiserweight so Joshua should be able to bully him, but Usyk is a talented boxer. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tk0442/support

Welcome to another episode of the Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast. In today's episode, Rob interviews Barry Hearn, the Infamous Sporting Events Promoter & Founder of Matchroom Sport. Barry specialises in logistics and monetisation and has been hugely successful. He says that his success is composed of big breaks and luck. Rob and Barry discuss the details of Barry's success in life and business. They talk about how he made it from rags to riches. What is Barry's secret to confidence? What happened and why he was able to succeed in life and became a multi-millionaire. They discuss all these details and a lot more insider secrets to Barry's great life. KEY TAKEAWAYS         Your 100%. Place in mind that you will eventually get there.  You have to put yourself out there 100% in the expense of everybody else, wives, families, children, and friends. If you really want to succeed, you have to be relentless. In an aeroplane, what is the first instruction? Put on yourself first because you are absolutely no use to anybody if you are incapacitated. So, you put on yourself before you do your wives and children, and business, when you're growing a business, exactly the same. Look after yourself first.  Then your family then your community.         Everybody in this world is different. And it follows therefore that everybody is better in everybody else at something. The sad part of that is they very rarely find out what that is.         The secret of luck. When you have your luck is making the most of it. So, we all get a break. Some people don't recognize when that break is. Some people don't see the opportunity, that's just inefficiency. But when you do, that would be a lot, then you really got to go for it and that's the maximization of the luck. And that's' what really what Barry is good at.         Good reputation. You establish a good reputation. You operate with integrity. Sounds old-fashioned. You give people value for money, and you put a smile on people's faces. It is so much common sense. If everyone gets value for money, TV companies get ratings. If the sponsor gets exposure. If the puns got a great night out, is that not what we're trying to do anyway? So, just be better at it and do a better job. Work to make it work.         Stress. It is obviously an individual thing. Certain people react different ways. And no one can say they haven't had stress at some time because whether its family. People die and terrible things happen to you. But all you've got to do is remember that while you're here, everything is fine.         Sports. Sport is about occasions. Sports unite the whole country. It is the only time that it unites the whole country or the world. It transgresses any boundary. It creates memories and moments.         Social Media Marketing defines boundaries nowadays. Targeted market is a value to sponsors.         The most important thing about youngsters playing any sports is that they're happy and they enjoy it.         The ability to tell the truth. As he got older, he only ever tells the truth. And it's refreshing that he doesn't really care how he tells it to or whom he tells it to.         Advice. Make sure you're busy. Make sure you're enjoying yourself. Make sure you're smiling. Make sure, hopefully, you're contributing. And last but mainly, be selfish. Be very selfish. Just make sure when you finish, you've given it a hundred percent. Win, Lose or Draw. BEST MOMENTS “Some people would criticize me for being only an accountant. And I think, they are missing the point that that is how you run a business.” "I started off with Steve first 5 years. I think I taught him everything I could teach. And for the last 35 years, he's taught me more." “The sad thing is a lot of people look in the mirror and ask themselves a question, why didn't it happen to me? Without understanding the reason why it didn't. And why it didn't is because you aren't focused enough or you didn't make enough sacrifices. People talk about sacrifices without really understanding what it is.” “I have always been a dreamer and I have always been a predictor. Sometimes, I even get it right but, I mean my history was either a series of God-given big breaks or being just lucky.” “My mom locked me in a room. And it was Monday to Friday and Sunday. But I could go out Saturday. So from 18 to 21, I didn't go out. But I learned every single line of every single book. So, there's no way I way, I was ever going to fail.” “If you want something bad enough, you do it.” “You make it work. You work to make it work... It is not perfect, but we can get better. And we won't stop trying to get better, and eventually, we look at ourselves and say we did a good job.” “All I want is for people to say, ‘When's the next one?" “Don't waste a minute of your day... I don't waste a minute. And I enjoy every minute and if there's something I don't enjoy, I stop it straight away.” “If I work hard enough, I can average over a hundred. If I average over a hundred, I can make a living. If you are not good, six months later you say, it's not working out. Fair enough. You start seeing light at the end of the tunnel. And you just pray it's not a train coming towards you.” "The opportunity is there within the structure of most sports to progress if you have an ability. Unfortunately, in sports, it's a series of snakes and ladders. Early doors, there's an awful lot of ladders. Later on, you come across more and more snakes. And if you can negotiate, you're way past the snakes and just got the ladders, you will be a star my son, and if you don't, you will be normal." “It all comes down to character.” “Sometimes, it is good to know that we're only human.” “Business is exactly the same as sport. It is just another game. Don't get carried away with it. And you want to win. And the winning is what gets you up in the morning and drives you on.” “Telling the truth is important. The most important person to tell the truth to is yourself.” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ https://robmoore.com/podcast/ The Disruptive Entrepreneur Community https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Hearn ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. SB Weekly - the sport business podcast

Barry Hearn, founder of Matchroom Sport, is the feature interview on this week's SB Weekly. As a sports promoter Barry’s been a prominent figure on the UK sporting scene for a number of decades, first with snooker in the 1970s, then with boxing in the 1980s followed by darts in the 1990s. He was also chairman of Leyton Orient football club from 1995 to 2014. Though his son Eddie now manages Matchroom’s interests in boxing, Barry’s still very much involved in snooker - as the owner of World Snooker, the world governing body’s commercial arm - and darts, as chairman of the PDC, the Professional Darts Corporation. You can hear Barry talk about such things as... ...the secrets of his success"I'm tough to beat on work ethic. I like to win and I know most of my opposition won't make the same amount of effort." ...his public perception"Behind the barrow boy is a chartered accountant - I'm a freak with figures and live for balance sheets." ...running Matchroom"At the moment my word still counts for something. But I'm sure it will start to count less and less." ...sitting at the negotiation table"It's like being with your dentist: you grab his testicles and say, 'Neither of us are going to hurt each other, are we?'" ...his foray into football"I like to think I'm this tough guy, but I must have a soft centre...my heart and my wallet merged together" ...the secrets to promoting a sports event"It's so easy; it's pure common sense...but you'd be surprised by how many get it wrong." ...sports industry snobbery"People look at me, thinking, 'Darts? Those fat blokes throwing those things? It's not like that down my rugby club'. It really pisses me off." ...selling Matchroom"Many want to buy it, but I'd never sell it. If I did, what would I do? Could you see me as a PLC chairman? Come on."

The founder of a massive sports promotion company Matchroom Sport, started off without a clear direction. He says just start, take a scattershot approach and eventually you’ll find your direction by the process of elimination. Aim high, then adjust. Hearn wanted to be a heavyweight boxing champion, but his path lead him to be a promoter instead. His own passion could comes across as draconian, but that’s only testament to how strongly he believes in the power of the individual to create a meaningful life. Lessons:     1.    At first take a scattergun approach in life; don’t set limits and then adjust to find your place.     2.    Start an hour earlier and end an hour later.     3.    Champions are impressive, but the people at the back of the field who refuse to give in may be even more impressive.
