In Campus Carry: Confronting a Loaded Issue in Higher Education (Harvard Education Press, 2020), editors Patricia Somers and Matt Valentine lead an examination of the unintended consequences of campus gun policy and showcase voices from the college community who are grappling with the questions, issues, and consequences that have emerged at their respective institutions. While making the case that campus carry legislation is harmful, the book gathers some of the very best thinking around enacting such policies and offers valuable recommendations for mitigating its effects and preserving university values. The implementation of campus carry is complex and has provoked many questions: How does concealed carry on campus affect the free expression of ideas in the classroom or the safety of faculty holding unpopular or even controversial views? Should students who misplace or leave their weapons unattended be disciplined? How are communities of color impacted by campus carry? Along with the book's contributors, Somers and Valentine provide higher education leaders, administrators, and faculty with a valuable resource that will guide them toward considerations that might otherwise be overlooked, help them avoid pitfalls that have been encountered elsewhere, and protect institutional priorities. The book features reflection pieces from students, alumni, and faculty to illustrate the complexity and controversy of the campus carry policy. Given that the legal possession of guns in the classroom is now a reality for American educators and students in much of the country, Campus Carry concludes with a passionate call for more university-based original research on gun violence. Pat Somers is an Associate Professor in the Program of Higher Education Leadership in the Educational Leadership and Policy Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Matt Valentine teaches writing at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is a fellow of the Trice Professorship in the Plan II Honors Program. Tom Discenna is Professor of Communication at Oakland University whose work examines issues of academic labor and communicative labor more broadly. Learn more about your ad choices. Greetings Dead Freaks! We've got a bunch of little things and then a big mix of good old Grateful Dead ahead of us. We're taking a look back at the Berkeley Community Theater run centered on Halloween 1984. In addition to being the debut of the Official Taper's Section, it's also a fairly strong run of six shows with some really great music. We dip in and sample a bit of everything. Also in this episode, I tell you about an interesting new book from Julie Dreyer Brigden, aka Girl. Brigden was married to David Freiberg in the 60s and was around the Quicksilver and Grateful Dead scenes and so much more throughout the 60s & 70s. Her new book, Girl: An Untethered Life is available now from local booksellers (ask up front!) as well as via Amazon. Hers is a unique perspective on the time and I recommend the book.I'm also excited to share with you a track from a new Matt Valentine album the record is called "Preserves" and the tune is "Be Kind". Have a listen and then head on over to Bandcamp to cop the whole thing. At the top of the show is the trailer for an exciting new podcast from Osiris Media called "After Midnight: Phish's Big Cypress Music Festival." This week we have some great stories for you as Sarah and Simon are joined by three great guests: Mel Palmer, CMO Exo Investing Matt Valentine, Barclays UK Ventures Ali Paterson, Editor in Chief, Fintech Finance We kick off the episode by taking a look at some of the problems Revolut have been suffering from lately and the culture issues that are on-going. The general consensus is that response from Revolut has been tone-deaf at best and a great product is being lost to reputational issues, although Sarah disagrees that a product is still good if it's proven to be unlawful. The story is just the gift that keeps on giving (01:38). Next up, we talk about the Women in Fin Powerlist 2019 featuring two of our very oen 11:FS staff. It came out just in time for International Women's Day. Launched in 2015, the Women in FinTech Powerlist has increasingly attracted a global audience and an unprecedented number of nominations and applications. We take a look at if these lists shine a light on the issues or if it's just political and there are some interesting discussions around who's actually appearing on these lists (08:04). Other stories include: Bank of Ireland’s multi billion euro tech bill AI is a non-starter for 40% of startups Facebook’s cryptocoin Grab gobbles $1.4 billion investment to build super app Chime rounds out epic new fundraising round Nationwide wants in on core banking And finally, Goldman Sachs is loosening its dress code All this and much much more on this week's news show.
